"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

From time to time articles and shlokas (verses) included in this newsletter may require the Balaram font in order to view them nicely. If you don't have the Balaram font installed on your system you can download it for free from our fonts page.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                                TEXT 25

                        labhante brahma-nirvanam
                          rsayah ksina-kalmasah
                        chinna-dvaidha yatatmanah
                         sarva-bhuta-hite ratah

   WORD FOR WORD

   labhante--achieve; brahma-nirvanam--liberation in the Supreme;
rsayah--those who are active within; ksina-kalmasah--who are devoid
   of all sins; chinna--having torn off; dvaidhah--duality;
   yata-atmanah--engaged in self-realization; sarva-bhuta--for all
living entities; hite--in welfare work; ratah--engaged.

                               TRANSLATION

Those who are beyond the dualities that arise from doubts, whose
minds are engaged within, who are always busy working for the
welfare of all living beings, and who are free from all sins
   achieve liberation in the Supreme.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

Only a person who is fully in Krsna consciousness can be said to be
engaged in welfare work for all living entities. When a person is
actually in the knowledge that Krsna is the fountainhead of
everything, then when he acts in that spirit he acts for everyone.
The sufferings of humanity are due to forgetfulness of Krsna as the
supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor, and the supreme friend.
Therefore, to act to revive this consciousness within the entire
human society is the highest welfare work. One cannot be engaged in
such first-class welfare work without being liberated in the
Supreme. A Krsna conscious person has no doubt about the supremacy
of Krsna. He has no doubt because he is completely freed from all
sins. This is the state of divine love.

A person engaged only in ministering to the physical welfare of
human society cannot factually help anyone. Temporary relief of the
external body and the mind is not satisfactory. The real cause of
one's difficulties in the hard struggle for life may be found in
one's forgetfulness of his relationship with the Supreme Lord. When
a man is fully conscious of his relationship with Krsna, he is
actually a liberated soul, although he may be in the material
   tabernacle.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

But by nature the woman's body is different from man's

This conversation eventually led into another controversial subject in which Caitya-guru said, "One Life Member's wife was very upset. She came to see you with that rascal yogi. He said that the Vedas mention that we can drink, and that women and men have equal rights." Prabhupada acknowledged the meeting with a nod of his head.

Caitya-guru went on, "Then as she was also saying the same thing, you answered her: 'Okay, if woman and men have equal rights, why don't you beget children in the womb of your husband?' " Prabhupada smiled as he recalled the incident.

"She was very upset," Caitya-guru said. "She said, 'Prabhupada sometimes says things like that which are unreasonable.' "

Everyone laughed loudly.

"No," Prabhupada said. "I said that if you have equal rights, then make some arrangement. Sometimes you become pregnant, sometimes he becomes pregnant. Why there is not right? Equal right?"

Caitya-guru explained, "She told me, 'Prabhupada sometimes says these things that we feel all ashamed.' "

"But in speaking spiritual understanding," Prabhupada boldly pronounced, "we cannot make any compromise. What to speak of in Mauritius, in Chicago I told."

Then Prabhupada related an exchange he had with a stewardess on a plane journey in America. She had taken exception to a TV show in which Prabhupada had declared that men and women were not equal.

"I think that was the same stewardess," Harikesa offered, "who came in the back and asked us why the Swamiji doesn't like women."

Prabhupada was apologetic for the misunderstanding, but he wasn't about to alter the truth. "No, no. I don't say that I don't like women. But I cannot say that equal rights. How can I say? First of all show equal rights -- your husband becomes sometimes pregnant, and then you become pregnant, alternately." Prabhupada explained that even in Russia, where they had tried to make people equal, still there are managers and workers. So that sort of equality isn't ever possible.

When Harikesa mentioned that nowadays there are women senators and ambassadors, Prabhupada still did not concede that this means equality. "That simply requires education," he said. "But by nature the woman's body is different from man's."

However, when Caitya-guru took his comments to imply that this difference means that women are subordinate, Prabhupada corrected him. "Not subordinate, actually. Their occupations are different... That is another mistake. Just like the leg is walking and the head is directing; so although the occupation is different, both of them are important. We require the head and leg also. If simply head is there, if there is no leg, then who'll walk? This is the understanding. Not equal. Everyone must have his separate duties to serve the whole. That is the arrangement; this is real understanding. The most important part of the body is head, but that does not mean the leg is not important. Leg is important in its work, and head is important in its work. So we require both, head and tail both. Not that simply leg or simply head. But when we make comparative study, we can understand that head is more important than the leg. If you cut your leg, you can live, but if you cut your head, you'll die. Therefore the conclusion is: head is more important than the leg. Comparative study. Otherwise, head is also required and leg is also required.

"You collect some flowers, nice flowers, and add with it some green foliage, it becomes more beautiful. Simply flower is not so beautiful. When it is arrayed with some green foliage, then it becomes more beautiful. So we have to take in that sense. But comparatively, the flower is more important than the foliage. But the both of them are required."

Harikesa added, "The foliage also becomes beautiful because of the flower."

"Yes, that is God's creation," Prabhupada agreed. "Just like these trees: they are condemned. But still with trees we can make a beautiful garden, and that is very enjoyable. That is God's arrangement."

Prabhupada: one has to pass examination, severe test of examination. All the big, big devotees we see. Narada Muni, before becoming Narada Muni, he had to pass through severe examination, test. That chance is there in the human form of life, to pass the examination, test. But they are passing this human life with ordinary animal propensities. They are not trained up to pass the examination and be recognized by God. That civilization is lost, Vedic civilization, to prepare the human beings for passing the test, examination for being recognized by God.

tapasa brahmacaryena

samena ca damena ca

tyagena satya-saucabhyam

yamena niyamena va

 [SB 6.1.13]

These things are required, tapasa brahmacaryena.

Atreya Rsi: To pass the examination, one must follow a strict, austere life.

Prabhupada: Yes. Tapasa brahmacaryena, beginning tapasya, austerity. Brahmacarya, celibacy. Tapasa brahmacaryena samena damena [SB 6.1.13], controlling the senses, controlling the mind. Tyagena, by renunciation. Satya-saucabhyam, by following truthfulness and cleanliness. Yamena niyamena va, by practicing yoga,  yama-niyama. These are the different items of being qualified. But all these things can be done by one stroke, kevalaya bhaktya, by engaging oneself in devotion, vasudeva-parayanah.

kecit kevalaya bhaktya

vasudeva-parayanah

agham dhunvanti kartsnyena

niharam iva bhaskarah

 [SB 6.1.15]

One becomes qualified by one stroke of bhakti to Vasudeva. Just like the sunrise immediately dissipates the fog. Agham dhunvanti kartsnyena niharam iva bhaskarah. In the Kali-yuga, this one item of bhakti can make one perfectly fit candidate to pass the examination. Agham dhunvanti kartsnyena niharam iva bhaskarah. What is this nonsense life? There is no tapasya, no spiritual culture, simply like cats and dogs. Last night I was reading. Vamanadeva created a planet, Sutala, in which Visvakarma was ordered to construct big, big houses, palaces, better than in the heavenly planet. And these rascals are going and seeing simply rocks and sand. And what about these palaces and...?

Atreya Rsi: In Koran it is described that there is a very dangerous bridge that one has to pass.

Prabhupada: This is described in the Vedas, Vaitarani, cross from the material to the spiritual world.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

In Calcutta in 1971, Yamuna dasi was bringing Prabhupada his lunch.

Prabhupada asked her if she was teaching the girls how to cook. At that point, Kausalya dasi, who was outside the room,
spoke up and said that Yamuna was actually not teaching them to cook.

Prabhupada then looked at Yamuna dasi and in a very serious tone told her that if she did not distribute her knowledge, she would become envious.

Yamuna then understood that whatever she learned from Prabhupada she should share with others, including knowledge of cooking.

äkñiptätmendriyaù stréëäm
asaténäà ca mäyayä
raho racitayäläpaiù
çiçünäà kala-bhäñiëäm

SYNONYMS
äkñipta—charmed; ätma—heart; indriyaù—his senses; stréëäm—of women; asaténäm—false; ca—and; mäyayä—by mäyä; rahaù—in a solitary place; racitayä—displayed; äläpaiù—by the talking; çiçünäm—of the children; kala-bhäñiëäm—with sweet words.

TRANSLATION
He gives heart and senses to a woman, who falsely charms him with mäyä. He enjoys solitary embraces and talking with her, and he is enchanted by the sweet words of the small children.

PURPORT
Family life within the kingdom of illusory energy, mäyä, is just like a prison for the eternal living entity. In prison a prisoner is shackled by iron chains and iron bars. Similarly, a conditioned soul is shackled by the charming beauty of a woman, by her solitary embraces and talks of so-called love, and by the sweet words of his small children. Thus he forgets his real identity.
In this verse the words stréëäm asaténäm indicate that womanly love is just to agitate the mind of man. Actually, in the material world there is no love. Both the woman and the man are interested in their sense gratification. For sense gratification a woman creates an illusory love, and the man becomes enchanted by such false love and forgets his real duty. When there are children as the result of such a combination, the next attraction is to the sweet words of the children. The love of the woman at home and the talk of the children make one a secure prisoner, and thus he cannot leave his home. Such a person is termed, in Vedic language, a gåhamedhé, which means "one whose center of attraction is home." Gåhastha refers to one who lives with family, wife and children, but whose real purpose of living is to develop Kåñëa consciousness. One is therefore advised to become a gåhastha and not a gåhamedhé. The gåhastha's concern is to get out of the family life created by illusion and enter into real family life with Kåñëa, whereas the gåhamedhi s business is to repeatedly chain himself to so-called family life, in one life after another, and perpetually remain in the darkness of mäyä. (Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad: Srimad Bhagavatam 3:30:8 text and purport.)

The real beauty is Krishna and Radha.
One who is attracted by the beauty of Radha and Krishna cannot be attracted by the false beauty of this material world.

-Srimad Bhagavatam3.20.31
(Srila Prabhupada purports on conversation between Maitreya and Vidura)

Vain controversy may also include gossip and rumor (prajalpa). Naradapreviously stated that a bhakta shouldn't hear from people who speak of women, wealth, and atheists (Sutra 63). Even members of a religious movementhave to be careful in their talks, or they too may become another association of harsh and idle talkers like the nondevotees. One has to distinguish between responsible dialogue on important issues and talk that leads nowhere. If we enter into controversial topics, we should do so with restraint, sincerely seeking the Vaisnava siddhanta according to guru, sastra, and sadhu. The sastras are not to be researched merely as so much ammunition for our own opinions. When we enter debate with an egoistic zest to defeat the opposition, we miss the point and end up fighting with the Vaisnavas.  (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad. Narad Bhakti Sutra 75 purport)

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Dear Vaisnavas,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In 1999 the devotees in Kazkhstan purchased a beautiful farm outside of the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Since that time substantial strides have been made in creating an agricultural community, a home for many vaisnavas, and the venue for a wonderful summer yearly festival attended by devotees from Central Asia and Russia.

Since October 2004 there have been many attempts from the government of Kazakhstan to push us from this property. This has been done by smear campaigns in the media and ongoing litigation in the courts.

On March 29, 2006 a case was conducted in the Almaty Oblast Court. Prior to issuing the ruling the judge declared that the legal arguments of the government land agency had no substance and that the arguments presented by the advocates representing our society were correct and in accordance to the Kazakhstan legal code.

But after private discussion in their chambers the judges emerged and issued a ruling against our society in which it is stated that the land be confiscated and returned to the government. This ruling was illegal and not based on legislation of the government of Kazakhstan.

We purchased the land at the market value in 1999. In 2004 we privatised the land according to the laws of Kazakhstan in. Since this time the value of this land has increased dramatically. The situation we have is that the powerful government land barons want to eliminate us by any illegal process that they may possess the land, again sell, and make astronomical profit.

We have neither time nor options left. Our last option is the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, but need-less-to-say, the legal system does not work in this country. It is either a matter of paying for the decision or having a powerful person order the decision.

Thus we are requesting devotees throughout the world to assist us in different ways:

First, we are requesting you to send this letter to all the contacts you have.

Second, we are requesting you to print the following letter and send to the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan requesting him to intervene in this case.

Third, we are requesting you to contact the heads of religious organisations, the foreign ministries in your countries, international human rights agencies, and register an appeal that they will voice concern to the government of Kazakhstan.

And at last, we are humbly requesting that you will all pray that this situation may be reversed and our farm, Sri Vrindavan Dham, will not be stolen by the government of Kazakhstan.

The President of Kazakhstan has gained international respect for having hosted an international religious forum in 2003. Yet, despite the talks of religious equality and openness, he is allowing a religious society to be illegally evicted from their legally acquired property. It is an injustice performed in the name of religious equality.

With affectionate regards,

BB Govinda Swami

To the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Mr. Nazarbayev N.A.

Akorda, Astana, 010000, Republic of Kazakhstan.

President's e-mail: sitePRK@global.kz

Dear President Nazarbayev,

It is with deep regret that we have been informed of your government's attempted confiscation of the land which is owned by the Kazakhstan Society for Krishna Consciousness.

The land has been legally purchased and privatised according to the land codes of Kazakhstan.

But since 2004 there has been ongoing litigation in an attempt by government officials to steal the land where the Kazakhstan Society for Krishna Consciousness has been officially registered, and situated, for the past seven years.

On March 29, 2006 a hearing was conducted in the Almaty Provincial Court.

The judge in charge of the case explained that he had carefully studied the case and that there was no substance in the arguments of the Government Land Committee and District Hakimat.

Yet, when the decision was read it was ruled that the land at issue be returned to the land reserve of Kazakhstan. The decision of the court was enacted due to executive pressure as it violates legislative and procedural rules of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Mr. President, you want that your fine country come into the rank of the leading nations of the world.

You have shown your open mindedness by conducting your International Religious Forum in 2003. Yet in this case we have a glaring example of a religious society being destroyed by the greed of self motivated officers.

Sir, we are respectfully appealing to you to intervene in this case.

Please stop the abuse and destruction of the one element of Indian religion which is active in your nation.

Please allow these people to live peacefully on their property in accordance to the vision of religious equality that you have presented for the nation of Kazakhstan.

Sincerely,

A brief update on the Kazakhstan campaign:
http://www.prabhupada.org/rama/?p=1972

Dear prabhus

Please accept my humble obeisances, all glories to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada.

As you may be aware the persecution of devotees is continuing in Kazakhstan. The international campaign is now in full swing. The Bhaktivedanta Manor Communications Team has produced a pack for UK temples, and indeed all organisations to use to imitate their own campaign at a local level. Please find PDF file attached. It includes up to date information, a petition and a letter writing campaign.

A hard copy and CD Rom can be sent on request. (see document for details)

Please act now.

Defend Kazakh Hindus Campaign
http://www.prabhupada.org/rama/?p=1877

National Hindu organisations from UK, USA, Australia, Canada and other countries have come together to call upon the Kazakhstan Government to stop harassment and human rights abuse against Hindus living in the country. Hindus living at Karasai in Kazakhstan are currently awaiting a riot squad from the local government which has promised to invade, demolish and confiscate their homes simply because they are Hindus.

A previous attempt to demolish homes on 25th April failed because local Hindus gathered together to lock their hands in prayer, sat in the pathway and blocked the way leading to the building. At that time the local executives told the members of the Society for Krishna Consciousness that they had not been prepared but would come with riot police on a surprise visit next time to ensure that the houses were demolished.

When the members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness attempted to register their properties they were asked to sign a document stating that they were not followers of the Krishna branch of Hinduism. On the other hand, 265 other homes owned by non-Hindus in the same area had no problems in registering their properties. Eviction and demolition notices have been issued only against hand-picked houses of Hindus.

In spite of such targeted human rights abuse that violates the United Nations Charter on Human Rights, the chairman of the Department of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Justice, Mr. Yeraly Tugzhanov tried to mislead the public by saying that the events were purely economic and not religious. Local Hindus from Karsai have pointed out that the land owned by Hindus had appreciated from fifty thousand dollars to nearly two million. They have pointed out that the targeting of homes belonging just to the Hindu community could be linked to demand by real estate developers who wish to occupy the land and develop urban properties.

Kazakhstan is seeking to become a member of the OCSE in the near future, and its human rights violation against minority religious communities does not bode well for such membership. We are deeply concerned by the human rights violations against Hindus in Kazakhstan, and request the President of Kazakhstan to intervene in this matter and take the following actions:

1.Immediately stop any action or order to demolish the houses belonging to the followers of the Hare Krishna section of Hinduism
2.Facilitate registration of properties legally occupied and owned by local Hindus in Karasai
3.Stop harassment and misinformation campaigns directed against Hindus in Kazakhstan

Petition to save the hills of Braj

Dear friends and members,

Hare Krishna.

We invite you all to read the following letter from Ambarisa Das, who was instrumental in setting up the Braj Foundation to protect and preserve the sacred places of Lord Krishna's pastimes.

The letter explains the current situation, and invites you to look further online.  Members of our congregation have already signed a petition which we have sent to the Indian High Commission in Wellington to be forwarded to the Prime Minister of India.  We attached 156 signatures from our last Sunday Feast (from Auckland), but now we ask you all to sign the petition online, and to inform your friends also.  All temples world wide are joining in this protest which will surely, by the Lord's grace, achieve its purpose.

Thank you all for your assistance.

Dear Maharajs and prabhus,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I believe that many of you are already aware of the critical threat to the environment of Braj Dham by illegal mining close to Barsana. In a nutshell, here is the problem:

In the last 10 years, illegal mining of the hilly terrain in the Braj region has grown nearly 25 times.  The focus of this activity is in the sacred groves of Kamavan where Sri Krishna had many pastimes with his cowherd boyfriends.  In addition to the brutal destruction of these sacred hills, the extensive use of dynamite has damaged some prominent sites of Krishna's pastimes, like Phisalini Shila a natural rock formation over which Krishna used to slide with his friends.

Inspired by the dedicated resistance that has grown up amongst the local Brijbasi community, I joined with other devotees to fund a Public Interest Litigation suit in the Supreme Court of India. The suit was successful and the Supreme Court ordered a complete ban last January. I also joined in forming the Braj Foundation to stimulate regeneration of the environment of Braj.

However, despite the ruling of the Supreme Court,  backed up by several other Central government rulings and a ruling from the Rajasthan High Court, the Rajasthan government has been dragging its feet on stopping this illegal activity under the apparent sway of the mining "mafia."

This collusion of unscrupulous businessmen has gone so far as to threaten the lives of senior activists and has succeeded in orchestrating the murder of one of the dedicated volunteers.

To try to bring more pressure on the government, the local Brijbasis have mounted a demonstration, conducting continuous Harinam at the Jantar Mandir in Delhi since April 22nd  and will submit their petition to the Prime Minister on May 11. (it is an on going thing though....)

I'm writing to ask you to support this effort with your own petition, signed by members of your congregations, and faxed to the Prime Minister care of the Indian Embassy of your country.

I also ask you to join the online version of this petition at (http://www.petitiononline.com/braj/petition.html). Please announce this to your congregation as well so they can join online and forward it to their friends and associates, helping create a wider awareness about this important issue.

The success of this effort will strengthen the foundations for increased action to stem the rapid environmental degradation of the entire Braj region. Your support today could mean the difference for our children tomorrow - a renewed Braj filled with sacred groves, forested hills and beautiful kunds, instead of a devastated and barren land.

I thank you for your support.

Your servant,
Ambarisa das

Swiss Lady Donates $400,000 to Jagganath Puri, Anti-hindu media Frot

This 1st article is fine. its the one below from hindustan times that is outright yellow journalism.

BHUBANESWAR: Starved of resources, the Jagannath temple at Puri could not have got a better gift a month ahead of the annual rath yatra: a Swiss woman has donated a whopping Rs 1.78 crore to the 12th century shrine.

And while she may have donated the biggest ever sum to the 800-year-old shrine, ironically, she cannot enter it as she is not a Hindu.

Elizabeth Ziggler, said to be around 45 years old, has donated over US $4 lakh (Rs 1.78 crore approximately) to the temple, the temple's chief administrator Suresh Mohapatra said, "The woman, a practising lawyer based at Geneva in Switzerland, has deposited the money in one of our bank accounts, opened under the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act.

"She wants us to spend the money on different temple activities including festivals," he told TOI on Tuesday. A few months ago we received Rs 10 lakh from an unknown person, but by far Ziggler's is the highest donation ever received by the Jagannath temple.

It is even in excess of the total donations of about Rs 1.3 crore that we collect every year," an elated Mohapatra said. Temple officials believe Ziggler donated the money by mobilising funds from friends and other philanthropists.

Interestingly, it's not for the first time that Ziggler turned good samaritan to the temple, considered one of the most important Hindu shrines in India.

"Between 2001 and 2003 she had donated around US $45,000 (Rs 20 lakh) and asked us to use it to feed 101 Brahmins on ekadashis, tie bana (flag) atop the temple on December 11 (a date she specified), and distribute clothes among the poor people, along with other things," Suresh Mohapatra said.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1534067.cms

Compare above article with this one below from a media outlet with low journalistic standards.

Christian funds for Puri shrine
Christians are barred from entering the Jagannath temple at Puri but a Geneva-based Christian lawyer has donated nearly $400,000 (Rs 1.78 crore) to the shrine; the amount is more than the total donation received last year.
Elizabeth Ziggler's spiritual tryst with the Jagannath temple began a decade ago. She stood outside the temple wall and left. But her donations kept coming in.
Suresh Mohapatra, an IAS official who is the chief administrative officer of the temple, told HT: We had received around $45,000 from Ziggler in 2000-03. But the recent donation of around $400,000 is the highest amount ever to have donated by any individual or group to the shrine."
Earlier, Ziggler would ask some rituals to be performed on her behalf. It could be feeding the Brahmins or hoisting a flag atop the temple from her donations. This time, however, she has not mentioned any particular purpose.

US$5.6 Million Temple Soon To Take Shape in UK

http://www.thisisbradford.co.uk/display.var.760410.0.3m_hindu_temple_soon_to_take_shape.php

BRADFORD, UNITED KINGDOM, May 15, 2006: Hindus have laid the foundations of a new US$5.6 million temple which will be the biggest Hindu temple in the north of England. Hundreds of people met yesterday at the site of the new development in Leeds Road, Bradford, to unveil the foundation stone of their new temple. The ceremony marked phase one of the project which includes plans to build a new community and sports center by the Hindu Cultural Society of Bradford. Chairman of the society Achar Paul Dharni said "This is a very proud day for all the Hindus in Bradford. Many years of hard work have already gone into this project and today sees a dream beginning to come true." The existing temple is the north of England's oldest Hindu shrine and was built in 1966. Chairman of the society's executive committee Baldev Bhardwaj said: "We decided to build our new temple here on Leeds Road because this is the area many of us originally settled in. We have prospered in Bradford as have our children. We hope people will see this building as part of our thanks to Bradford for giving us our opportunities. The temple will be a magnificent building and will complement the other great religious buildings in Bradford. We hope it will make a significant contribution to the regeneration of Bradford and the Leeds Road corridor regeneration scheme."

Tony Blair Wears Hindu Sacred Wrist Thread In House of Commons

News Report:

LONDON, ENGLAND, May 3, 2006: British Prime Minister Tony Blair sported a sacred Hindu red thread on his wrist during heated political exchanges in the House of Commons on Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the government said the wristband was a gift presented to Blair when he visited a Hindu temple in Neasden, north London, last week. Journalists spotted the thread on Blair's wrist as he was facing tough questioning from the opposition parties over a string of recent government scandals.

Sr Nirmala Mary Joshi, India; Venerable Bhiksuni Chuehmen Shih, Taiwan; Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, Japan; Dr. Alice Shalvi, Israel; Rev. Dr. Hans Ucko; Imam Dr A. Rashied Omar, USA; Rev. Yoshiharu Tomatsu, Japan; Professor Wande Abimbola, Nigeria; and Rt. Rev. Kumara Illangasinghe, Sri lanka. Excerpts follow, full text is at URL above:

We, the participants in the inter-faith reflection on "Conversion: Assessing the Reality," met at Lariano (Italy) on May 12-16, 2006. We, 27 of us, belong to Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Yoruba religion.

Our deliberations were intense, and took place in an atmosphere of cordiality, mutual respect and commitment to learn from one another's spiritual heritage, which together constitute the common inheritance of the entire humankind.

We hold that inter-religious dialogue, to be meaningful, should not exclude any topic, however controversial or sensitive, if that topic is a matter of concern for humankind as a whole or for any section's thereof.

Freedom of religion is a fundamental, inviolable and non-negotiable right of every human being in every country in the world. Freedom of religion connotes the freedom, without any obstruction, to practice one's own faith, freedom to propagate the teachings of one's faith to people of one's own and other faiths, and also the freedom to embrace another faith out of one's own free choice.

We affirm that while everyone has a right to invite others to an understanding of their faith, it should not be exercised by violating other's rights and religious sensibilities. At the same time, all should heal themselves from the obsession of converting others.

Freedom of religion enjoins upon all of us the equally non-negotiable responsibility to respect faiths other than our own, and never to denigrate, vilify or misrepresent them for the purpose of affirming superiority of our faith.

A particular reform that we would commend to practitioners and establishments of all faiths is to ensure that conversion by "unethical" means are discouraged and rejected by one and all. There should be transparency in the practice of inviting others to one's faith.

While deeply appreciating humanitarian work by faith communities, we feel that it should be conducted without any ulterior motives. In the area of humanitarian service in times of need, what we can do together, we should not do separately.

No faith organization should take advantage of vulnerable sections of society, such as children and the disabled.

The teenagers of today
by:   ixedoc on May 14 2006 2:00AM in Personal
http://kmc.sulekha.com/blogs/blogdisplay.aspx?cid=51553

Antecedents

A teenager is one who cries like a baby if he is not treated like an adult. Quite precise, this definition. Its always a gimme this, wanna that. Old foggies  are squares and nerds ( an mind you all above thirty are old) I read somewhere that a father and his teenage son were posing for a camera shot. The jean clad hep teen son, stood for the snap beside his dad, with his hands stuffed jauntily into his pockets. The papa, who noticed this, told him, that "the snap would look more ‘natural’ if you stood with your hands in my pockets”

Except dough, there’s is nothing they need from you. They’ve been there, done that. For everything the retort,  ‘F…… this, or F….. that’. No, the F here does not stand for the F word    if the F word is directed towards you, mum or dad, it means, Fund this, Finance that. Either it is this F  or the F for Forget.

How can anyone wearing that canvas thick Levis, a leather jacket and those shoe box like Nikes in Mangalore’s midsummer heat and humidity and be ‘Cool’, I really wonder. But these ‘with it’ boys and gals are, real cool. Watch how they gulp that coke, bottoms up while you and I, the staid folks ask for a straw. They say biros when they mean ball-pen. When they refer to the ‘ol man’, don’t look around, it means you. French Fries is Finger Chips. Their breakfast is never idly - dosa but burgers. And have you heard of hoppers, yes hoppers? What’s that new dish junior is asking for? Oh, that’s just old granny’s aapas (aapams, a circular disc made from overnight batter that has a puffed out core, like a flying saucer or RBC). Its never water for thirst, it has to be Limca. And did you note that his / her table has more cosmetics than his/ her mother’s? And that your teenage daughter exchanges cosmetics with your teenage son? While the mum is busy at the bathroom mirror applying black dye to her grey streaks, your teenage daughter is busy at another mirror applying streaking her black mane.

Worry when your teen son ferrets out a cigarette lighter for mum while she is struggling to ignite a flame to the stove with soggy moist matchsticks. Worry when your daughter bolts her room door when on the internet. Worry when she runs faster than you to pick up the phone: fume as he wipes off the good luck holy ash mum has applied on his forehead as he leaves for his final examinations, even before he reaches the gate.

Coo, exults the daughter, can ya believe this? My ear is OK now, come see. She leans towards me to show how the lobe aperture, which was chronically infected, is actually healing by itself. My best efforts to medicate it to health had failed. Now all on its own, it looks pink and pristine. A Miracle? I delve deep, everything miraculous must have an answer and what is science for if you don’t apply it to search for answers or solutions?

Eureka, I yell it is your mobile kid. It must be. The non - stop application of your cell phone to your left ear has healed it. Nonstop use of the set warms it considerably this constant and sustained heat, applied to the ear which incidentally is supplied by an end artery increases venous return and inflow considerably. By raising local temperature, one hundred times a day (the least number of times she is on the mobile) one is allowing stimulation of the end arterial flow- and presto, the ear is heals. This is the age of science The new teen age.

Addendum

Gosh, where did I put my mobile? she screams after rummaging everything in sight. Maawm, can I use your cell? She grabs it and ping ping her thumb pounces on the buttons tring tring, I hear a distant tone aha, she says switching off ma’s set Got it, mine is in the bathroom!

How dya know that?

I called me Coo and my cell rang from there.

Teenage science, I guess.

Oops, I dropped my ear-ring, she wails, and so we all go, ma an me, on our knees, scouring the floor, looking for the miniscule single pearl ring. A good ten minutes later, we give up: sorry kid, we can’t locate it. Oh, mum, it was the one I wanted for today’s party, now see what you’ve done. What I’ve done??? You lost it miss, remember, now you find it. The mum is livid.

Okay, okaii, cool, cool she sings and focuses flashing her camera cell phone under the cot, ping, ping, aha, there you are she chirps, and reaches for it. Applied teen technology.

Pling, pling, plong what’s that? I though it should sing tring tring.

That’s the tone for an incoming sms, coo

What does the message say?Ya wont understand Coo, it's in cellingo.

Cellingo? I only know of three ways news travels fast, tell-a-gram, tell-a-phone and tell-a-woman: but cell-a-lingo?

Yup, see ‘U ‘N I R 1 4 ALL 2 C’, that means----

Hold it I know that stuff, it means, hmmm, ‘you and I are one for all to see’

Coo, you’re the real thing. Coooool, kewl. Amazing! how could you? I mean, how could you decipher.

Easy kid, easy! I am on sulekha, babe and sulekha folks know how to break codes and make sense of anything in print cranky, cryptic or convoluted

Wow!

Appendix

Me, I just thank a 'grieving man' for schooling me on how to comprehend coded crap. I smile to myself as I walk to the sink to wash my hands, once again. Not for nothing am I known as Pontius Pilate: clean hands, cleaner conscience: On pixiedoctored prose and poetry, I am decoder numero uno.

Liquid Beauty story
http://www.salagram.net/LiquidBeauty.html

Once upon a time a prince met very beautiful young girl. He visited her house to see her but she was very chaste. The prince wanted to marry this beautiful girl but she didn't want to marry him. So she said to him, You want to marry me, you are attracted by my beauty, so I will distill my beauty in the next ten days, I will distill my beauty for youand keep it.

So the prince agreed. Then the beautiful girl said, "If you still want to take me as your wife then you can take me." The prince replied, "All right, that's fine, I'll come back in ten days and certainly I'll take you as my wife my beautiful young maiden."

As soon he left the beautiful young girl started to take very strong purgatives [medicine which would cause her to vomit and pass stool]. She kept all the vomit and stool in a big pot. She didn't eat anything, she was simply passing stool and vomiting, so within ten days her whole beautiful body was destroyed. She was a gray color, she was very skinny, very weak, you couldn't recognize her as the same person.

After ten days the prince came back to visit the beautiful young girl. She opened the door for him. When the prince saw her he said, "I have come to see one very beautiful lady who I am about to marry." So the girl said, "I am that beautiful young lady." He replied, "No it isn't true. How could it be possible?" She said, "Yes I am that beautiful young lady, I have distilled my beauty, come and see it." She took the prince to the place where she was keeping the big pot containing all of her stool, vomit and urine and she said, "Here is my beauty."

This is the story of liquid beauty. In reality the material body is simply a bag of pus, stool, urine, blood, mucus, so many horrible things. And we are simply attracted to the beautiful skin and as soon as the skin is no longer beautiful we are not attracted any more.

Our society is simply going on the basis of this "skin disease." So we see so many divorces and so many marriages. A man is being attracted to a woman on the basis of the skin. He thinks, "Oh, here is a very nice woman. She has very nice hair, a very beautiful complexion, a very nice bodily structure. She is a very beautiful woman." The woman is thinking in the same way, "This is a very handsome man, he is very strong, very beautiful, a very attractive man." Then they come together and for a short time enjoy sex life and soon there is some problem with the sex life, some difficulty, so they say, "I'm sorry it's just not working any more, the magic has gone from our relationship. I have to find somebody else." Then there is a divorce.

Everything is based on the skin, and the skin is temporary. We can never be satisfied, we can never be happy with a relationship based on the skin because our skin is a very temporary thing.

A beautiful girl is beautiful for a few years only, it is a fleeting moment only. Every body gets old, every body gets sick, every body dies. But we are not the body we are the spirit, the soul. The soul is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss (sat cit ananda). But currently the soul is covered by the material body and we are misidentifying the body with the self. We think if we satisfy the body we will become satisfied. But, no matter how hard we try to satisfy the body, the soul, the spirit is never satisfied by any amount of material so-called "pleasure."

If we are attracted by the skin only, the beauty of the skin, we're bound to be dissatisfied because the person, I, the self, is different from the body. Krishna describes in the Bhagavad-gita (2.13):

dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati

Here Krishna says the soul, even in this life, is changing bodies. In the beginning we have a child's body, then we get a boy's body, then a man's body then we get an old man's body, so the time of death is simply another change of body. A self-realized soul can understand this, he can see this.

Our bodies are always changing. You can see. No one can argue with this. It's a statement of a very plain fact. I have this man's body now, previously I had a boy's body, prior to that I had a child's body and before that a babies body. They are all different bodies.

I can see, my parents have the pictures and they can show you I had these different bodies. Now those bodies have gone. Now I have this man's body and in due course it will also be finished and I'll have an old man's body and ultimately that old mans body will be gone and I will be taken away to another body at the time of death.

This is the process of life and death in the material world. The bodies are changing but the soul is not changing. I the person am the same person I was in the babies body, I'm the same person I was in the child's body, I'm the same person I was in the boys body. I can remember things, I can remember my childhood body, I can remember my boys body. I can remember the activities I performed in these bodies. These activities are performed by me, but the body I had then is gone. So we can understand that I, the self, the person, I am permanent, I am eternal, but the body is always changing. I am not this body, I am the occupier of this body, I am the driver of this body, I am the controller of this body, but I am not the body. The body is a machine.

UK Young Indian Vegetarians Promote Website

http://www.youngindianvegetarians.co.uk.

ENGLAND, May 11, 2006: Nitin Mehta of Young Indian Vegetarians writes HPI that they have a web site, URL above, and are a "campaigning vegetarian group."

Their home page states their mission: "We hereby pledge to bring about a 21st century in which the human race will finally make peace with the animal kingdom. Human beings will no longer kill, maim, torture or exploit fellow beings for food or other purposes. Animals will have fundamental rights which will be internationally recognized. It is clear beyond any doubt that the survival of the human race depends upon the survival of the forests and other natural resources and of the animals with whom we share this planet. We pledge to protect all of them. We oppose the introduction of animal genes into human beings and the genetic manipulation of animals and plants. The human race will reach the pinnacle of civilization when it extends the hand of friendship and compassion to the animal kingdom and returns to the healthy plant-based diet best suited to the moral and physical needs of our species, thus avoiding the related evils of animal exploitation, human starvation and environmental destruction. At the close of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, let us make a tryst with destiny to create a world free of violence towards all living beings who are dependent on our love and compassion. Together let us embark on that long journey which will bring about a world in which all animals are treated with compassion and mercy and accorded rights that human beings take for granted."

On the Term Vedic Empire
http://www.vedicempire.com/empireofthought.htm

"I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-Gita. It was the first of books; it was as if an Empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"The Bhagavad-Gita is an Empire of thought and in its philosophical teachings Krishna has all the attributes of the full-fledged monotheistic deity and at the same time the attributes of the Upanisadic absolute." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Vedic Empire Productions uses the term Empire in the same sense as Ralph Waldo Emerson. When I founded the Vedic Empire Productions in 1996, I contacted Vedic Historian P.N.Oak. I sent him our TV shows, Articles etc. He appreciated our efforts but suggested we drop the term Empire. He offered us the name, “The Fraternal Association of Vedic Culture.” Besides being for all creation, not just human males, the name just does not have the right ring to it. As a Former member of Netaji’s Indian National Army and a Freedom Fighter against the British Empire, it seemed that P.N. Oak attached the colonial abuse of the British to the term Empire. For Americans, the term Empire usually brings to mind George Lucas’ Star Wars epics. Yet the our use of the term Vedic Empire is in no way referring to Imperial colonial efforts but rather it is that very same Empire of Thought that Emerson praised.

World Smoke Free Day
31st May Every Year

http://www.be-free.org/b-media/market-bfree03/cinema.php

yeah kick the butt
...and remember from 10th December 2004 no more smoking in public places in New Zealand by law

This World:

Prahlad Maharaj said,
"Those who have taken the vow to enjoy temporary material things in this world are always full of anxieties. They try in so many ways to enjoy, and they make a vow: "eat, drink, and be merry; for tomorrow we may die. So now we should enjoy to the maximum." Still, they only experience anxiety. "Such enjoyment is likened to one who falls into a blind well."

Once there was a man walking in the forest, and he saw a tiger, and this very ferocious tiger started to chase him. As the man was running he saw a well, a ditch covered over by grass. He saw two branches growing out from the walls of the well and, holding on to the branches, he lowered himself down to get away from the tiger, who by this time was just looming over him. However, he saw that below him there were some very venomous cobras that were raising their hoods and extending their tongues. His legs were dangling just over the snakes. At the same time there were two rats-one on each branch. One rat was black, another white, and they were nibbling away at the branches. His situation was now very, very precarious.

So our situation also is like that. At any  moment we may die. Death is imminent.

What do the tigers represent? They are roaring like death at the top of the well. The many snakes are our many problems-daily problems, problems, and problems.  Death who looming over his head and at the same time there were problems coming from all directions. In the meantime the rats were nibbling away. The two rats, one black and one white, signify nighttime and daytime. In due course the karma of that life will run out. The rats are nibbling away at his duration of life. At any time the branch will break.

Above him there was a branch with a beehive, and there were some very beautiful, golden translucent drops of honey beginning to fall. As they began to fall, the man stuck his tongue out to catch them. He than began to enjoy, and he forgot the reality of his situation.

"O, most tasteful." He forgot all the dangers.

We know that our fathers and forefathers have died. And we know that all who were put to death were never happy. Still, we want that old age should not come to us, and that we will not die. We are always making efforts to make ourselves more  beautiful, more powerful, and more intelligent. We want to be expert in sense gratification. But moment by moment the two rats are nibbling. One second, two seconds, three seconds; then one hour, then twenty-four hours, then a day, then seven days, then one month; and after twelve months, then one year, and then one yuga. In this way our life is diminishing, and still never think that we will die. We are satisfied like mad persons. And what is the honey? It is the very beautiful, very sweet love and affection of wives, husbands and children. If not of husbands and wives, then of new, new, new girlfriends and boyfriends.

The beautiful face of Jagannatha is a bright, sweet pendant. Jagannatha's jewelry, eyes and smile are delicately outlined in gold. His face is surrounded by a lotus flower decorated with symbols commonly associated with Him: a golden club, lotus, conch, and chakra.

This enameled pendant is well-made with a nice weight that lets you know it's a quality piece of jewelry. It's about 1" tall and hangs from a thin golden loop that is wide enough to string on a favorite necklace, Tulasi neck beads, or a silk cord so you can hang it in your car even. Choose your favorite color: red, blue, yellow, or white. Its laminated so the colors will last forever. If you're interested please feel free to send me an e-mail so we can "Talk Shop"?. I Hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

In case of emergency (ICE) contact number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Green Potatoes - or Stuffed Potatoes

Serves 2 - 4 persons if not hungry, double or triple the recipe if they are hungry hahaha
Ingredients:
4 large russet or baking potatoes
2 cups (8oz) chopped broccoli
2/3 cup (5fl oz) skim milk, or buttermilk if you prefer
1 cup (8oz) green taco sauce
1 cup (8oz) Cheddar cheese, grated
salt and pepper
cayenne pepper (optional)

Method:
1. Wash the potatoes and then bake at 200°C/400°F/Gas 6 for 15 minutes. Pierce the skin a couple times with a fork. Reduce the temperature to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4 and continue baking for another 45 minutes until done.

2. While the potatoes are baking, steam the broccoli until tender. Place the broccoli along with 1/3 cup (2½fl oz) of milk in a blender and puree.

3. When the potatoes are done, remove them from the oven and slice them in half. Scoop out the pulp into a mixing bowl, leaving a fairly thin intact jacket. Arrange the potato jackets on a baking sheet.

4. Add the broccoli and all remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix by hand or with a mixer. Adjust the texture to your liking by adding milk as needed, but not to the point of becoming thin and runny.

5. Spoon a generous amount of the filling into the jackets.
Bake at 180°C/350°F/Gas 4 for 15 to 20 minutes.
Offer and serve immediately.

Bubble and Squeak Rosti

When I was a kid growing up in the UK this was the classic traditional "leftover recipe" for greens, but here we are making it rosti-style and adding some mature Cheddar adds a new dimension. Brilliant served with a selection of pickles.

Serves 4 (makes 8 rosti)
Ingredients:
450g (1lb) Desiree or Romano potatoes
75g (3oz) spring greens or green cabbage (trimmed weight)
50g (2oz) mature Cheddar cheese, coarsely grated
1 level tbsp plain flour
25g (1oz) butter
3 tsp Olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method:
1. First scrub the potatoes, then place them in a medium saucepan with a little salt. Pour boiling water over to just cover them, then simmer gently with a lid on for 8 minutes. Drain the potatoes, then, while they are cooling, remove any stalks from the spring greens or cabbage and finely shred the leaves into ¼ inch (5mm) slices. This is easy if you form them into a roll and then slice them. Drop the spring greens or cabbage into boiling water for 2 minutes only, then drain and dry well.

2. When the potatoes have cooled, peel them, then, using the coarse side of a grater, grate them into a bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then add the grated cheese and greens or cabbage and lightly toss together.

3. To assemble the rosti, shape the mixture into rounds 3 inches (7.5cm) wide and ½ inch (1cm) thick. Press them firmly together to form little cakes or cutlets (tikis) and dust lightly with the flour. If you want to make them ahead, place them on a plate and cover with clingfilm - they will happily sit in the fridge for up a couple of  hours.

4. To cook the rosti, pre-heat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7 and place a baking tray on the top shelf of the oven. Melt the butter and add the oil, then brush the rosti on both sides with the mixture. When the oven is up to heat, place the rosti on the baking tray and return it to the top shelf of the oven for 15 minutes, then turn the rosti over and cook them for a further 10 minutes. Once cooked, and offered, they tell me it's all right to keep them warm for up to 30 minutes. Funny I haven't found any that lasted that long.

Brussel Sprouts with Chestnuts

Try this fabulous recipe for buttery brussels with chestnuts to team with tofurkey (tofu - turkey) - and banish soggy sprouts forever!

Some say it serves 4
Ingredients:
350g/12oz Brussel sprouts
225g/8oz whole chestnuts, cooked
60g/2½oz butter
1 pinch salt and fresh ground black pepper

Method:
1. Trim off the outside leaves of the brussels sprouts and cut a cross in the stalk.

2. Plunge into boiling salted water and cook on a fairly fast boil for about four to five minutes until they are just done but not soggy.

3. Refresh the sprouts in cold water and drain.

4. Cut the chestnuts and sprouts in half.

5. Melt the butter in a frying pan and add the sprouts and fry gently for five minutes.

6. Add the chestnuts and heat through for a couple of minutes.

7. Season and serve hot

South Indian Sweet Puranpoli

Ingredients:
1 cup - Greengram (Mung dal)
1 cup - Soft Brown Sugar/Jaggery/Gur
1/2 cup - Plain flour
1/2 tsp - Cardamom powder
1 tbsp - Ghee/butter/margarine
To knead the dough - Warm water
To serve - Ghee/butter

Boil the dal in plenty of water till soft but not broken.

Drain in a colander for 10-15 minutes.

Mash the dal with the masher or pass through an almond grater little
by little till all dal is grated.

Mix sugar or jaggery well into the dal.

Put the mixture in a heavy bottomed saucepan and cook till a soft
lump is formed.  Take care to stir continuously, so as not to charr.

Add cardamom powder and mix well and keep aside.

Mix butter, flour and enough water to make a soft pliable dough. Cover the
dough with wet cloth for atleast 30 minutes.

Take a morsel sized ball of dough, roll into a 4" round.(grease your palms
with oil and do the rolling so that the dough doesn't stick to your hands.)

Place same sized ball of filling in center cover with the dough and seal.

reroll carefully to a 6" diameter round.

Roast on warm griddle till golden brown. Apply small oil on the
sides. Repeat other side.

Take on serving plate. Apply small ghee/butter all over top. Serve hot.

Sour Cream Pancakes with Honey & Blueberries

Tart berries, sweet honey and warm pancakes work well together in this scrumptious East European dish - like Stepney, Bermondsey, New Cross, East Ham - yer know East European init eh.

Serves 4-6 (makes 12 pancakes)
Ingredients:
For the pancake batter:
160g (5½oz) plain flour
160ml (5½fl oz) warm milk
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
Egg replacement powder for 2 eggs, separated
10g (½oz) fresh yeast, crumbled
1 tbsp sour cream
2 tsp clarified butter
For the topping:
4 tbsp Acacia honey
100g (3½oz) blueberries
icing (confectioners) sugar, for dusting

Method:
1. Place the flour in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the warm milk, sugar and salt, and mix well. Stir in the egg replacement powder and add the yeast. Mix well until everything has dissolved and you have a smooth batter.

2. Cover, and leave in a warm place, for about an hour, until the batter has doubled in size.

3. Whisk the egg whites until they resemble soft peaks. Fold them into the pancake batter. Stir in the sour cream.

4. Place a heavy, non-stick frying pan, about 18cm (7in) in diameter, on a medium-high heat. With a pastry brush, brush its surface with a little clarified butter.

5. Ladle spoonfuls of the pancake mixture into the pan and cook until golden brown on each side. Give each pancake about 40 seconds on each side, flipping each one over half-way through cooking.

6. Dust with icing (confectioners) sugar and serve hot with honey and blueberries.

Vanilla Fudge - poor man's burfi

Few people can resist vanilla-scented home-made fudge - an irresistible treat and easy to prepare!

Makes about 36 pieces - yeah that's right serves three......
Ingredients:
ghee or vegetable oil, for greasing
300ml (½ pint) milk
350g (12oz) caster (refined granulated) sugar
100g (3½oz) unsalted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract

Method:
1. Grease an 18cm (7in) square cake tin.

2. Put the milk, sugar and butter in a heavy-based saucepan. Heat slowly, stirring all the time, until the sugar has dissolved and the butter melted.

3. Bring to the boil and boil for 15-20 minutes, stirring all the time.

4. When the mixture reaches the soft-ball stage (115°C on a sugar thermometer), remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Leave to cool for 5 minutes.

5. Beat the mixture with a spoon for a few minutes until it starts to thicken and the gloss disappears.

6. Pour into the prepared tin and leave to set at room temperature (do not put it in the fridge).

7. Once set, cut the fudge into small squares and offer it, or you can offer a small amount and store the rest in a sealed container to offer later.

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat.
That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it.
Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Laughter Therapy - its no joke:
http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/yod/march98/news.htm

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

What Do We Know about God

A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, "Boys and girls, what do we know about God?

A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the kindergarten boy.

"Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked.

"You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven... Harry be Thy name......"

Recently one brahmacharin was contemplating the notion of being launched headlong into the "real world" by getting married, and was totally shocked by the expenses that came with it, sitting with his family his brother was complaining about the high cost of auto insurance.

"If you got married," teased his father, "the premium would be lower."

Another devotee sitting with them smiled and said, "That would be like buying an airline just to get free peanuts."

keep yer eye on that snake !!!!

Johnny, where's your homework?" Miss Martin said sternly to the little boy while holding out her hand.

"My dog ate it," was his solemn response.

"Johnny, I've been a teacher for eighteen years. Do you really expect me to believe that?"

"It's true, Miss Martin, I swear," insisted Johnny.  "I had to force him, but he ate it!"

Swimming in the buff'

Recently, I was diagnosed with AAADD: Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests itself:

I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I spotted the mail on the hall table. I should go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay the car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is full.

So, I put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. Since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I might as well pay the bills first. I see my checkbook on the table, but there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk, where I find the bottle of juice that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push th! e juice aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. But the juice is getting warm, and should be put in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

Heading toward the kitchen with the juice, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye. They need to be watered. I set the juice down on the counter, and find my reading glasses, for which I've been searching all morning. I had better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water, and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. Tonight when we sit down to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it's on the kitchen table. I should put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So, I put the remote back down on the table, and get some towels to wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

The car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm bottle of juice sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

I'm trying to figure out why nothing got done today; it's quite baffling because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.  I know this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.

The ways of this material world - strange but true

For those with No children - this is totally hysterical!
For those who already have children past this age - this is hilarious.
For those who have children this age - this is not funny.
For those who have children nearing this age -this is a warning.
For those who have not yet had children - this is birth control.

The following came from an anonymous Mother in Austin, Texas:
Things I've learned from my Children (honest & no kidding):

1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.

2. If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.

3. A 3-year old's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.

4. If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42-pound boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.

5. You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.

6. The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.

7. When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh," it's already too late. (No matter how old the child!)

8. Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it.

9. A six-year old can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old man says they can only do it in the movies.

10. Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old.

11. Play dough and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.

12. Super glue is forever.

13. No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.

14. Pool filters do not like Jell-O.

15. VCR's do not eject PB&J sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do.

16. Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.

17. Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.

18. You probably do not want to know what that odor is.

19. Always look in the oven before you turn it on.. Plastic toys do not like ovens.

20. The fire department in Austin, TX has a 5-minute response time.

21. The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.

22. It will, however, make cats dizzy.

23. Cats throw up twice their body weight! when dizzy.

24. The mind of a 6-year old is wonderful. First grade...true story: One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home. She read, "..And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, "Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?'" The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that man said?" One little boy raised his hand and said, "I think he said...'Holy crap! A talking pig!'" The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.

25. 60% of men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid.

..and his mother said "How many times have I told you not to eat with your knife"

7 reasons not to mess with children.

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.

The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human;it was physically impossible.

The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah".

The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?"

The little girl replied, "Then you’ll have to ask him".

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work.

As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."

The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like."

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her fiveand six year olds.

After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked,
"Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"

Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink.
She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?"

Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white."

The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said,
"Then why are ALL of grandma's hairs white?"

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.

"Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown-up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.'

A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, she's dead."

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said,
"Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face."

"Yes," the class said.

"Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"

A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:

"Take only ONE. God is watching."

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of thetable wasa large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples.

from Amrita Pani devi dasi Auckland

OPTIMISM, n. The doctrine, or belief, that everything is beautiful, including what is ugly, everything good, especially the bad, and everything right that is wrong. It is held with greatest tenacity by those most accustomed to the mischance of falling into adversity, and is most acceptably expounded with the grin that apes a smile. Being a blind faith, it is inaccessible to the light of disproof -- an intellectual disorder, yielding to no treatment but death. It is hereditary, but fortunately not contagious.

OPTIMIST, n. A proponent of the doctrine that black is white.

A pessimist applied to God for relief.
"Ah, you wish me to restore your hope and cheerfulness," said God.
"No," replied the petitioner, "I wish you to create something that would justify them."

"The world is all created," said God, "but you have overlooked something -- the mortality of the optimist."

.......and remember to lock the car !!!!!!!

I am sure you have read this at some time or another but it is a good one...

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?
Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm ?
Student: (Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?
Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From.....God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this
world?
Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it?
Student : Yes .

Prof : And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?
Student: (Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness?
All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?
Student: (Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No , sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.) Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?
Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.

Student : Now tell me, Professor , do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, Sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher ?
(The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it?.....No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir ?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it sir.. The link between man & God is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving & alive

West-side

A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body.  It fit under his shirt and was not noticeable at all.

On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in school.  Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work.

When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.  Discipline was not a problem from that day forward!
