Hare Krishna. =>B-) JTCd

"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

The Nectar in this Issue

From time to time articles and shlokas (verses) included in this newsletter may require the Balaram font in order to view them nicely. If you don't have the Balaram font installed on your system you can download it for free from our fonts page.

Srimad Bhagavatam Day

SB. 12.13.13:

prausthapadyam paurnamasyam
hema-simha-samanvitam
dadati yo bhagavatam
sa yati paramam gatim
Translation:

"If on the full moon day of the month of Bhadra one places Srimad Bhagavatam on a golden throne and gives it as a gift, he will attain the supreme transcendental destination".

 Purport:

One should place Srimad-Bhagavatam on a golden throne because it is the king of all literature. On the full-moon day of the month of Bhadra, the sun, which is compared to this king of literatures, is present in the constellation Leo and looks as if raised up on a royal throne. (According to astrology, the sun is said to be exalted in the sign of Leo.) Thus one may unreservedly worship Srimad-Bhagavatam, the supreme divine scripture.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

   TEXT 29

   bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
   sarva-loka-mahesvaram
   suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
   jnatva mam santim rcchati

   WORD FOR WORD
bhoktaram--the beneficiary; yajna--of sacrifices; tapasam--and penances and austerities; sarva-loka--of all planets and the demigods thereof; maha-isvaram--the Supreme Lord; su-hrdam--the benefactor; sarva--of all; bhutanam--the living entities; jnatva--thus knowing; mam--Me (Lord Krsna); santim--relief from material pangs; rcchati--one achieves.

                               TRANSLATION
A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.

PURPORT by His Divine Grace Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

The conditioned souls within the clutches of illusory energy are all anxious to attain peace in the material world. But they do not know the formula for peace, which is explained in this part of the Bhagavad-gita. The greatest peace formula is simply this: Lord Krsna is the beneficiary in all human activities. Men should offer everything to the transcendental service of the Lord because He is the proprietor of all planets and the demigods thereon. No one is greater than He. He is greater than the greatest of the demigods, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma. In the Vedas (Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.7) the Supreme Lord is described as tam isvaranam paramam mahesvaram. Under the spell of illusion, living entities are trying to be lords of all they survey, but actually they are dominated by the material energy of the Lord. The Lord is the master of material nature, and the conditioned souls are under the stringent rules of material nature. Unless one understands these bare facts, it is not possible to achieve peace in the world either individually or collectively. This is the sense of Krsna consciousness: Lord Krsna is the supreme predominator, and all living entities, including the great demigods, are His subordinates. One can attain perfect peace only in complete Krsna consciousness.

This Fifth Chapter is a practical explanation of Krsna consciousness, generally known as karma-yoga. The question of mental speculation as to how karma-yoga can give liberation is answered herewith. To work in Krsna consciousness is to work with the complete knowledge of the Lord as the predominator. Such work is not different from transcendental knowledge. Direct Krsna consciousness is bhakti-yoga, and jnana-yoga is a path leading to bhakti-yoga. Krsna consciousness means to work in full knowledge of one's relationship with the Supreme Absolute, and the perfection of this consciousness is full knowledge of Krsna, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A pure soul is the eternal servant of God as His fragmental part and parcel. He comes into contact with maya (illusion) due to the desire to lord it over maya, and that is the cause of his many sufferings. As long as he is in contact with matter, he has to execute work in terms of material necessities. Krsna consciousness, however, brings one into spiritual life even while one is within the jurisdiction of matter, for it is an arousing of spiritual existence by practice in the material world.
The more one is advanced, the more he is freed from the clutches of matter. The Lord is not partial toward anyone. Everything depends on one's practical performance of duties in Krsna consciousness, which helps one control the senses in every respect and conquer the influence of desire and anger. And one who stands fast in Krsna consciousness, controlling the abovementioned passions, remains factually in the transcendental stage, or brahma-nirvana. The eightfold yoga mysticism is automatically practiced in Krsna consciousness because the ultimate purpose is served. There is a gradual process of elevation in the practice of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. But these only preface perfection by devotional service, which alone can award peace to the human being. It is the highest perfection of life.

Thus end the Bhaktivedanta Purports to the Fifth Chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad-gita in the matter of Karma-yoga, or Action in Krsna Consciousness.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

January 3rd, 1976, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh

In the early morning Srila Prabhupada, Tamal Krishna Maharaja, Harikesa, and I boarded a train heading north to Nellore, a small city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The local Madras devotees saw us off at the station with a rousing kirtana. The clamor alerted some of the other passengers to Prabhupada's presence, and several men hovered around the carriage, peering in with great interest. We shut the door and relaxed in the quiet privacy of the first-class compartment.

"First class" is a misnomer, as the compartment was a bit uncomfortable and dirty, with soot from the steam engine speckled throughout. The only advantage was the privacy of the cabin. Still, Prabhupada said he preferred to travel by train rather than plane; there is more room and a satisfyingly sedate pace.

We carried with us some fruit and other prasadam for breakfast. After Prabhupada ate, we enjoyed the remnants while he took a little rest, stretching out along the seat, which devotees had covered with clean white sheets.

Tamal Krishna Maharaja went out to wash and swiftly shut the door behind him. When he came back he sidled through the half-open entry and again quickly shut it. "There are three men hanging around in the corridor hoping to see Prabhupada," he said, answering our quizzical looks. "They'll just come in and ask some nonsense and disturb him, so don't let them in." People in India are often eager to ask for blessings from holy men, but unfortunately they rarely have any serious spiritual intent. There are also many sadhus accustomed to offering such meaningless asirvada, or blessings.

Srila Prabhupada refers to this kind of sadhu as an asirvada-maharaja. Usually they give a wave of the hand, a nod, and exchange a few polite words. There is no spiritual discussion, no transmission of knowledge, and no transformation. Yet both parties are satisfied with this giving and receiving of they know not what -- 'asirvadas.' From our understanding of Prabhupada's teachings, such intangible exchanges are of no practical value. Naturally, as Prabhupada's servants, we don't like to see his time wasted with such blessing-seekers.

When Harikesa and I went out of the compartment, the curious men were still there. On our return, despite our obvious reluctance to let them in, they strained to see past us, knowing that if they caught Prabhupada's eye, etiquette would oblige him to let them in. Prabhupada was awake, eye-contact was made, and he instructed us to let them in. The three filed in and sat opposite, smiling and pleased at having evaded the secretaries of someone they knew was a great spiritual leader and holy man.

Thus we all sat: we three somewhat irritated by this polite infringement on Prabhupada's precious time, they three ignoring us, eager to have his darsana, and Srila Prabhupada, as always, a warm and cordial host. Not at all inconvenienced, Prabhupada received them courteously, asking them a few polite questions: what their names were, where they came from, what they did, and the like. Then he looked directly into their faces and asked, "So, what is it that I can do for you?"

"Swamiji, we just wanted to get your blessings."

"What is that blessing?"

This answer took them by surprise. No one had ever asked them what kind of blessings.

Caught off guard, one of them replied, "Well Swamiji, I have this pain in my knee..."

We almost groaned out loud and the man, becoming embarrassed, hastily added, "And for our families also..."

"Ah, and of course we want to do good to others..."

As he trailed off into confused silence, Prabhupada indicated his three disciples with shaved heads, sikhas, kurtas, dhotis, and tulasi beads. He told them, "This is my blessing. These boys have given up everything for Krsna's service and to chant Hare Krsna. Are you prepared to accept such a blessing?"

At first there was no reply. They were stunned; all kinds of wild thoughts seemed to run through their heads and across their faces. Then, before they could become the beneficiaries of this blessing, they hurriedly stood. One stammered, "Well, actually Swamiji, at the moment we have so many duties with the family and all, this kind of life of a sannyasi, for us it is not possible..." With profuse apologies and many thanks they beat a hasty retreat. We laughed as Prabhupada sat smiling and shook his head.

"This is the problem. They simply take a sadhu as some means for avoiding paying the doctor's bill, that's all. Asirvada-maharaja. They are not serious for spiritual life."

People have no appreciation of a real mahatma.

Pradyumna (leads chanting, etc.):

pancajanyam hrsikeso
devadattam dhananjayah
paundram dadhmau maha-sankham
bhima-karma vrkodarah
 [Bg. 1.15]

Translation: "Then Lord Krsna blew His conchshell named Pancajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhima, the voracious eater and performer of Herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell named Paundram."

Prabhupada: So Vrkodara, Bhimasena, is advertised as voracious eater. But he can perform Herculean task also. Just like the elephant, it eats voraciously, but it gives service also. Similarly if we simply eat voraciously and we cannot give any service that is not good. We must eat sumptuously and give service also. In Bengali it is said that pete keli pithe soya (?). If one is given sufficient food in the belly, he can carry more burden on the back. So Bhima-karma, his activities were very Herculean, very, very, difficult tasks he performed.

So everyone is named here with his task. The first name is, Krsna, Hrsikesa. Hrsikesa. He is the master of the senses. Govinda. Go means senses. "Who gives pleasure to the senses." So Krsna has got many names, thousands, out of which, the Krsna name is chief, mukhya. That is described in Vedic literature. People say God has no name. That is right. He has no particular fixed name. But His names are there according to His different activities. Just like His name is Devaki-nandana. Because He accepted Devaki as His mother, therefore He is called Devaki-nandana. Similarly, He is called Nanda-nandana, Yasoda-nandana, Vrajendra-nandana -- -in relationship with Nanda Maharaja, Yasoda, His foster father and mother. Similarly, He is sometimes named Partha-sarathi because He acted as the chariot driver of Arjuna. Arjuna's name is Partha. His mother's name is Prtha, Kunti's. From Prtha, his name is Partha. From his father's name, Pandu, his name is Pandava. So in this way big personalities or anyone, they should tally, the name should tally with the activities. This is nomenclature.
In the... According to Vedic civilization, after the birth of the child, there was name-giving ceremony, what kind of name. So that was calculated astrologically, that what kind of name he should be given, because the name should carry some meaning of the activities of his life. So Krsna is named here Hrsikesa. Hrsikesa, Krsna, in the fifteenth chapter is described that He gives direction to everyone. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistah: "I am sitting in everyone's heart as Paramatma." Realization of the Absolute Truth are three features, Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan.

vadanti tat tattva-vidas
tattvam yaj jnanam advayam
brahmeti paramatmeti
bhagavan iti sabdyate
 [SB 1.2.11]

Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan. The same object. So the Brahman realization is impersonal realization. Just like the sun, the sun globe, and the sunshine. They are one, but the sunshine, realization of the sunshine, is not realization of the sun globe. Or realization of the sun globe is not realization of the sun god who is within the sun globe. Vivasvan. His name is Vivasvan. The present predominating Deity in the sun planet, his name is Vivasvan. And his son Manu is called Vaivasvata Manu. This is the age of Vaivasvata Manu. So at the... This is very nice example, that the sunshine, the sun globe and the sun god. They are all one, but still, the sun globe is not the person, sun god; neither the sunshine is not the person sun, although they are one. This is called acintya-bhedabheda-tattva, inconceivably one and different simultaneously.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

Regarding prasadam, Krishna does not accept any foodstuff offered by a person who is not a devotee. In the Bhagavad-gita it is stated: patram puspam phalam toyam, yo me bhakta prayacchati (9.26). So the importance is stressed on the bhakti, the devotion. Krishna does not accept anything unless one is a pure devotee of Krishna. How to become a pure devotee of Krishna, you have to chant Hare Krishna and follow the four regulative principles of no meat eating, intoxication, illicit sex, or gambling, and you have to follow a guru who is expert in the science of devotional service. If you are serious about understanding Krishna consciousness, you can live with us for some time in one of our centres with your father's permission and learn the science and do the needful."

BHAGAVAD-GITA

SELECTED VERSES

"But a person free from all attachment and aversion and able to control his senses through regulative principles of freedom can obtain the complete mercy of the Lord.

"For one thus satisfied (in Krishna consciousness), the threefold miseries of material existence exist no longer; in such satisfied consciousness, one's intelligence is soon well established.

"One who is not connected with the Supreme (in Krishna consciousness) can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?

"As a boat on the water is swept away by a strong wind, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man’s intelligence.

"Therefore, 0 mighty-armed, one whose senses are restrained from their objects is certainly of steady intelligence.

"What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.

"A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires - that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still - can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires.

"A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego - he alone can attain real peace."

Impersonalism is Condemned in the Upaniñads

12.26

andhaà tamaù praviçanti ye 'vidyäm upäsate
tato bhuya iva te tamo ya u vidyäyäà ratäù

Those who engage in the culture of ignorance [and so perform karma-kaëda worship to attain their desired object] shall enter into dark regions of ignorance. Worse still are those engaged in the culture of so-called knowledge. They enter into a realm of even greater darkness. (Içopaniñad 9)

12.27

kleço 'dhikataras teñäm avyaktäsakta-cetasäm
avyaktä hi gatir duùkhaà dehavadbhir aväpyate

For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifest, impersonal feature of the Absolute, advancement is very troublesome. Progress in that discipline is always difficult for those who are embodied. (Bhagavad-gétä 12.5)

The Scriptures Condemn the Ascending Path of Knowledge

12.28

jïäne prayäsam udapäsya namanta eva
jévanti san-mukharitäà bhavadéya-värtäm
sthäne sthitäù çruti-gatäà tanu-väo-manobhir
ye präyaço 'jita jito 'py asi tais tri-lokyäm

[Lord Brahmä said] My dear Lord, those devotees who have thrown away the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth and have therefore abandoned discussing empirical philosophical truths should hear from self-realized devotees about Your holy name, form, pastimes, and qualities. They should completely follow the principles of devotional service. Surrendering themselves fully with body, mind, and words they can live in any position. Indeed, O Lord, although You are unconquerable, You are conquered by such persons. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 10.14.3)

12.29

teñäm asau kleçala eva çiñyate
nänyad yathä sthüla-tuñävaghätinäm

My dear Lord, devotional service unto You is the only auspicious path. Those who reject the path of bhakti and try to reach the infinite with their finite brains will never succeed. O Lord, those who want to have a clear conception of You through their intellect find their attempts useless. Their endeavors end only in trouble and frustration, like the frustration of those who try to beat rice from empty husks. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 10.14.4)

The Followers of the Ascending and

Someone may say that aside from Vaiñëavas, who always seek shelter at the Lord's lotus feet, there are those who are not Vaiñëavas but have accepted a different process for attaining salvation. What happens to them? In answer to this question, Lord Brahmä says: O lotus-eyed Lord, although nondevotees who accept severe austerities and penance's to achieve the highest position may think themselves liberated, their intelligence is impure. Although they may rise to the level of impersonal Brahman realization, they fall down from their position of imagined superiority because they neglect to worship Your lotus feet. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 10.2.32)

12.31

O Madhava, Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord of the goddess of fortune, if devotees completely in love with You sometimes fall from the path of devotion, they do not fall down like nondevotees, for You still protect them. Thus they fearlessly traverse the heads of their opponents and continue to progress in devotional service. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 10.2.33)

12.32

jévan-muktä api punar-bandhanaà yänti karmabhiù

Those souls who have attained liberation while living can again become bound if they commit an offense to the inconceivably powerful Supreme Personality of Godhead. (Väsanä-bhäñyodhåta Çré Bhagavata-pariçiñöa-vacana)

12.33

jévan-muktäù prapadyante kvacit saàsära-väsanäm
yogino na vilipyante karmabhir-bhagavat-paräù

Those who have attained liberation while living sometimes develop material attachment, but those who are fixed in bhakti-yoga, who have dedicated themselves to Kåñëa, will never again have to suffer repeated birth and death. (Väsanä-bhäñyodhåta Çré Bhagavata-pariçiñöa-vacana)

12.34

Out of foolishness if one does not follow the Lord of the universe when he goes out on a chariot then such a person will become Brahma-rakñasa even if he is a liberated person. (Ratha-yäträ-prasaìge Çré Viñëu-bhakti-candrodayoddhåta Puräëaväkya)

We are very powerful because of austerities, meditation and education. Nonetheless, even after searching for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who sees everything, we cannot see Him or understand Him. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 4.29.44)

The Supreme Self can never be known by argument, reasoning, intelligence, or scholarship. By His own sweet will, however, the Lord may choose to reveal Himself to someone in His personal divine form. Only such a person can see the Lord. (Muëòaka Upaniñad 3.2.3)

12.37

12.38

Let me offer my respectful obeisance's unto my spiritual master, the son of Vyäsadeva, Çukadeva Gosvämé. It is he who defeats all inauspicious things within this universe. Although in the beginning he was absorbed in the happiness of Brahman realization and was living in a secluded place, giving up all other types of consciousness, he became attracted by the most melodious pastimes of Lord Kåñëa. He therefore mercifully spoke the supreme Puräëa, Çrémad Bhägavatam, which is the bright light of the Absolute Truth and which describes the activities of Lord Kåñëa. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 12.12.69)

The wise have concluded that yoga and its mystic perfection's are impediments on the path of the Absolute Truth. They are a waste of time for those who wish to practice the best yoga, devotional service, and thus attain the highest perfection [love of Godhead]. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 11.15.33)

Who is a Real Yogé and Sannyäsé?

12.44

anäçritaù karma-phalaà käryaà karma karoti yaù
sa sannyäsé ca yogé ca na niragnir na cäkriyaù

One who is unattached to the fruits of his work yet does his duty is a true sannyäsé and a yogé, not he who lights no fire of sacrifice or performs no work. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.1)

12.45

niskäma haiyäkare ye kåñëa-bhajana
tähäre se bali "yogé" sannyäsa-lakñaëa
viñëu-kriyä nä karile paränna khäile
kicchu nahe, säkñätei ei vede bale

One who worships Kåñëa without material desires is a real yogé and has symptoms of sannyäsé. Those who do not work for Viñëu but eat from others are parasites. That is the version of the Vedas. (Chaitanya bhagavat. Antya 3.41-42)

12.46

tapasvibhyo 'dhiko yogé jïänibhyo 'pi mato 'dhikaù
karmibhyaç cädhiko yogé tasmäd yogé bhavärjuna

A yogé is greater than a ascetic, a jïäni, or a karmi. Therefore, O Arjuna, always be a yogé. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.46)

12.47

yoginäm api sarveñäà mad-gatenäntar-ätmanä

Of all yogés, who always abides in Me with great faith, always thinking of Me and worshiping Me in transcendental loving service, is most intimately united with Me in yoga. He is the highest of all. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.47)

Without Bhakti There is no Means to Attain the Supreme

12.48

na sädhayati mäà yogo na säokhyaà dharma uddhava
na svädhyäyas tapas tyägo yathä bhaktir mamorjitä

I am not controlled by those who practice mystic yoga, Säokhya philosophy, mundane piety and religion, study of the Vedas, penances and renunciation. O Uddhava, I am controlled by bhakti. Those who have developed unalloyed devotion for Me control Me by their love. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 11.14.20)

Although being assured of his father's treasure, the poor man could not acquire this treasure by such knowledge alone. The astrologer had to tell him, therefore, the means whereby he could actually find the treasure. The astrologer said, "The treasure is in this place, but if you dig on the southern side, the wasps and drones will rise, and you will not get your treasure. If you dig on the western side, a ghost will create such a disturbance that your hands will not even touch the treasure. If you dig on the northern side, a big black snake will devour you. If, however, you dig up a small quantity of dirt on the eastern side, you will immediately touch the pot of treasure. Revealed scriptures conclude that one should give up fruitive activity, speculative knowledge, and the mystic yoga system. Instead one should take to devotional service, by which Kåñëa can be fully satisfied. The conclusion is that devotional service is the only means to approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This system is therefore called abhidheya. This is the verdict of all revealed scriptures. When one is actually rich he naturally enjoys all kinds of happiness. When one is actually in a happy mood, all distressful conditions go away by themselves. No extraneous endeavor is needed. Similarly, as a result of bhakti, one's dormant love for Kåñëa awakens. Then one can taste the association of Lord Kåñëa. And material existence, the repetition of birth and death, comes to an end. The goal of love of Godhead is not to become materially rich or free from material bondage. The real goal is to be situated in devotional service to the Lord and to enjoy transcendental bliss. (Sri Chaitanya charitamritam. Madhya 20.131-136, 139-142)

The Goal of Bhakti and the Goal of Karma

12.51

Those who practice mystic yoga, who perform great austerities and accept sannyäsa, may attain the sinless realms of Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapaloka, and Satyaloka, but those who practice bhakti-yoga, devotional service unto Me, attain My abode. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 11.24.14)

12.52

yänti deva-vratä devän pitèn yänti pitå-vratäù

Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits take birth among such beings, and those who worship Me will live with Me. (Bhagavad-gétä 9.25)

12.53

'mukti, bhukti väïche yei, kähän duohära gati?'
'sthävara-deha, deva-deha yaiche avasthiti'

"And what is the destination of those who desire liberation and those who desire sense gratification?" Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu asked. Rämänanda Räya replied, "Those who attempt to merge into the existence of the Supreme Lord will have to accept a body like that of a tree. And those who are overly inclined toward sense gratification will attain the bodies of demigods.'' (Sri Chaitanya charitamritam. Madhya 8.257)

The Character of Bhakti

12.54

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing, about Me. (Bhagavad-gétä l0.9)

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Dear Vaisnavas,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In 1999 the devotees in Kazkhstan purchased a beautiful farm outside of the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Since that time substantial strides have been made in creating an agricultural community, a home for many vaisnavas, and the venue for a wonderful summer yearly festival attended by devotees from Central Asia and Russia.

Since October 2004 there have been many attempts from the government of Kazakhstan to push us from this property. This has been done by smear campaigns in the media and ongoing litigation in the courts.

On March 29, 2006 a case was conducted in the Almaty Oblast Court. Prior to issuing the ruling the judge declared that the legal arguments of the government land agency had no substance and that the arguments presented by the advocates representing our society were correct and in accordance to the Kazakhstan legal code.

But after private discussion in their chambers the judges emerged and issued a ruling against our society in which it is stated that the land be confiscated and returned to the government. This ruling was illegal and not based on legislation of the government of Kazakhstan.

We purchased the land at the market value in 1999. In 2004 we privatised the land according to the laws of Kazakhstan in. Since this time the value of this land has increased dramatically. The situation we have is that the powerful government land barons want to eliminate us by any illegal process that they may possess the land, again sell, and make astronomical profit.

We have neither time nor options left. Our last option is the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, but need-less-to-say, the legal system does not work in this country. It is either a matter of paying for the decision or having a powerful person order the decision.

Thus we are requesting devotees throughout the world to assist us in different ways:

First, we are requesting you to send this letter to all the contacts you have.

Second, we are requesting you to print the following letter and send to the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan requesting him to intervene in this case.

Third, we are requesting you to contact the heads of religious organisations, the foreign ministries in your countries, international human rights agencies, and register an appeal that they will voice concern to the government of Kazakhstan.

And at last, we are humbly requesting that you will all pray that this situation may be reversed and our farm, Sri Vrindavan Dham, will not be stolen by the government of Kazakhstan.

The President of Kazakhstan has gained international respect for having hosted an international religious forum in 2003. Yet, despite the talks of religious equality and openness, he is allowing a religious society to be illegally evicted from their legally acquired property. It is an injustice performed in the name of religious equality.

With affectionate regards,

BB Govinda Swami

To the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Mr. Nazarbayev N.A.

Akorda, Astana, 010000, Republic of Kazakhstan.

President's e-mail: sitePRK@global.kz

Dear President Nazarbayev,

It is with deep regret that we have been informed of your government's attempted confiscation of the land which is owned by the Kazakhstan Society for Krishna Consciousness.

The land has been legally purchased and privatised according to the land codes of Kazakhstan.

But since 2004 there has been ongoing litigation in an attempt by government officials to steal the land where the Kazakhstan Society for Krishna Consciousness has been officially registered, and situated, for the past seven years.

On March 29, 2006 a hearing was conducted in the Almaty Provincial Court.

The judge in charge of the case explained that he had carefully studied the case and that there was no substance in the arguments of the Government Land Committee and District Hakimat.

Yet, when the decision was read it was ruled that the land at issue be returned to the land reserve of Kazakhstan. The decision of the court was enacted due to executive pressure as it violates legislative and procedural rules of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Mr. President, you want that your fine country come into the rank of the leading nations of the world.

You have shown your open mindedness by conducting your International Religious Forum in 2003. Yet in this case we have a glaring example of a religious society being destroyed by the greed of self motivated officers.

Sir, we are respectfully appealing to you to intervene in this case.

Please stop the abuse and destruction of the one element of Indian religion which is active in your nation.

Please allow these people to live peacefully on their property in accordance to the vision of religious equality that you have presented for the nation of Kazakhstan.

Sincerely,

Birth Of A Devotee
http://www.gopala.org/index.php/2006/05/24/birth_of_a_devotee

by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada

Question: When a devotee is born in a fam ily, does that family benefit from his or her birth?

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta: When a great saint, a pure devotee, appears in a family, then his ancestors and descendants for a hundred generations each are elevated. When a devotee of the middle stature (madhyama bhagavata) appears in a family, then his ancestors and descendants for fourteen generations each are elevated. When a neophyte devotee appears in a family, then his ancestors and descendants for three generations each are elevated.

Question: Why are devotees sometimes born in lowclass families? If devotees are not subject to the results of their actions (karma), then why are they sometimes illiterate or diseaseridden?

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta: Devotees are never subject to the result of their karma. It is by the will of the Lord that they take birth and perform other pastimes. But when it is seen that they are born in lowclass families, are illiterate, or are disease ridden, we should know that there is a great or noble purpose behind it. If people saw that devotees were always born in high class families or were always strong or educated, then they would become discouraged. So the merciful Lord, in order to benefit people of all classes, sends his devotees to different classes of society to give his mercy to other living entities. This is something like catching a wild male elephant by sending a trained female elephant. Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur has said in the Caitanya Bhagavata that a vaisnava delivers everyone just by taking birth. In a land and in a family where a vaisnava descends, many hundreds of miles around that place become purified by his influence. Even if you see some external misery in a vaisnava’s life, you should know that he is in great ecstasy. Those who are blinded by pride in their material possessions do not know any of these things. Intoxicated with pride in their education, money, and family, they do not recognize a vaisnava.

If a devotee appears in a low-class family, then we should not think that it is a result of his sin that he was subject to the result of his action. Rather, we should know that he has purified a low-class family. If a good person becomes successful only in the devotional process, then we should consider him a great soul.

Mumbai Gets Ranked as Rudest City in the World

http://in.rediff.com/news/2006/jun/20mum.htm

USA, June 20, 2006: Mumbai, the bustling economic capital of India, is the rudest city on earth, whereas Sao Paulo in Brazil and New York in the US are among the most cordial, a survey has found. The survey on common courtesy conducted by popular monthly Readers Digest has found the culture of extending help, expressing gratitude when helped and talking politely are not part of everyday life in Mumbai. The magazine sent its over 2,000 reporters to gauge the politeness level of leading cities in 35 countries where it publishes from. The survey used three tests to take stock of the politeness factor -- dropping papers in a busy street to see if anyone would help, checking how often shop assistants said "thank you," and counting how often someone held a door open. Mumbai's count in the test was lower than even Bucharest, the rudest of European cities. Asia, in general, scored low on the chart, with every city on the continent, excepting Hong Kong, finding a pl ace among the bottom 10.

New York topped the chart with a score of 80 per cent whereas in Sao Paulo, even miscreants were found saying "thank you," the survey said. The other polite cities are Zagreb in Croatia, where people on the streets are ever willing to help, and Stockholm, where shop assistants thank customers for making purchases. Among the rude cities are popular metros like London and Paris, which came a joint 15th, recording just 57 per cent. Moscow too qualified as a rude city, with just 42 per cent. Cities like Berlin, Warsaw, Madrid and Prague were found to be more polite than Paris and London. The average politeness level of the world was found to be 55 per cent, the study said.

Kali Yuga woes
by Aisvarya dasa
http://icemonger.livejournal.com/26579.html

It's hard to hang out in Kali Yuga without being somewhat dragged down by it. It is a good time to simplify ones life and feel some relief from family encumbrances since there are few solid families remaining in these times, but still, alongside the degradation of external influences also runs the degradation of self-motivations and aspirations. Instead of utilizing a loophole in the system and escaping through a small and unobtrusive gap in that pulling, binding power of society, friendship and love that this quarrelsome age has kindly watered down for us, we instead become sidetracked by the steady hypnotic whir of the machine or the mirage of cheap shiny garments or the softness of that comfy chair after a hard days grind. We lose the plot before we even know there is one. We’ve sold out to the plastic imitations. Mesmerizing images conquer our TV screens before even a word is uttered in defense of some semblance of knowledge. Virtually naked bodies strut about as a statement of something requiring a large injection of culture. The impulse to purchase something way beyond our reach is made conveniently achievable by a great invention the iron-shackles of credit.

Let's face it, when it comes to looking around and seeing things as they are, we're out to lunch. We missed the boat by buying into the notion that the masses can't be wrong and that might is right. Poison has entered the bloodstream of society so much so that even those on a counteracting espionage mission from the outer reaches of suburban mayhem are simply, without knowing it, playing into the same addiction game as the rest of us. The headless Kali Yuga society prevails at the cost of even the twinkling of an eye in defiance. And thus we rot.

“Is that it?” I hear you ask. Such a tabernacle of doom have I painfully etched onto your glowing screens. Is there no light that guides my troubled mind to the end of that tunnel of despair? Do I not see halos or shining white dots or fluffiness pop out of my art deco furniture, bringing me to a level of happiness that helps me forget and bounce along oblivious to the troubled times we're in? Has my Pandora’s box of cheap tricks finally been war-ravaged beyond repair?

There is no cheap trick or external hyper-coaxing that will help the soul even tentatively tip-toe out of the problems of this place where there is danger at every step. The time to think that a couple of minutes of pot washing a week at our local temple will suffice is the understatement of the century. The filtering of foreign elements into our being have left their marks on our body, mind and intelligence and we thus find ourselves with so many problems to solve, desires to fulfill, and philosophies to discover before we can reach out and tug on those Bhagavatam pages.

[CC Madhya 8.67] Ramananda Raya continued, “Lord Brahma said, ‘My dear Lord, those devotees who have thrown away the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth and have therefore abandoned discussing empiric philosophical truths should hear from self-realized devotees about Your holy name, form, pastimes and qualities. They should completely follow the principles of devotional service and remain free from illicit sex, gambling, intoxication and animal slaughter. Surrendering themselves fully with body, words and mind, they can live in any asrama or social status. Indeed, You are conquered by such persons, although You are always unconquerable.’”

[8.68] At this point, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied, “This is all right, but still you can speak more on the subject.”
Ramananda Raya then replied, “Ecstatic love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the essence of all perfection.”

The Business of Thieves

http://www.umapati.net/node/7

The scriptures say that in Kali-yuga, governing is the business of thieves, rogues who collect taxes and divide the money among themselves, without protecting the people.

I have read in the news today that members of the United States Congress have given themselves another pay raise, the eighth in ten years. At the same time, they have refused to raise the minimum wage, keeping millions of workers living below the poverty line.

Congress is presently dominated by Republicans, who get most of their votes from the bosses and businessmen. The minority democrats are mostly supported by the workers, but they do not have the majority needed to put through the minimum-wage increase.

But do not think that the Republicans are thieves and the Democrats are not. They are both simply interested in pleasing their constituents to get the most votes. And the Democrats, like their Republican fellows, have no qualms about enjoying the luxurious pay raises. The problem is that the different factions of society are pulling in different directions. The people do not have a unified goal, and thus there is competition between the various groups.

In the Vedic society, however, there was no labor-management conflict. True, the laborers, or sudras, were paid little in the way of money, but they were amply provided with the necessities of life, and more. They wore silk clothes and real jewels. They were sumptuously fed, and there was no unemployment.

I know what sudras want because I come from a sudra background. My father repaired machinery for a living. The most important thing in life for him was taking care of his family, and he would have been happy to work hard for a boss who would have guaranteed him lifetime security. But he never found such a boss.

I remember when my parents had not paid the water bill on time, and the man with the key came to shut off the water in the house. Fortunately, my mother convinced him to leave it on, but can you imagine a government taking away people's water because they do not have enough money?

In the Vedic society, working people did not have to worry about making ends meet, and what's more, the bosses were happy to take care of them. Nor did the bosses worry about cutting into their profits because they knew that the system kept everybody satisfied, and many of them were fabulously rich.

What was the system? How did it work?

The system was a society based on Vedic knowledge taught by brahmanas who willingly lived in poverty and had no need for profit, and the system worked by putting Krishna, the Supreme Lord, in the center of everyone's activities.

All the people, from the king to the workers, worshiped Krishna by their work, under the guidance of brahmanas well versed in the Vedic scriptures. And the brahmanas lived by begging from door to door, so they did not have to worry about losing their fat salaries if the king did not like their advice.

I'll write more about this in future postings. In the meantime, you can read about it in the books of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

—"They believe that to gratify tthe senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable." [Bhagavad-gita As It Is, 16.11]

Buddhist Monks In Thailand Missing Religious Duties Due to World Cup

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/monks-give-alms-a-miss-for-football/13499-13.html

BANGKOK, THAILAND, June 21, 2006: (HPI note: Thailand doesn't have a team in the World Cup, only Japan and South Korea participated from Asia, and both were eliminated in the first round. India's hired a new coach, Englishman Bob Houghton, with the hopes of making it to the World Cup in 2010. The Thailand government estimates the country has lost US$60 million in tourist revenue because of tourists going to Europe for the Cup instead of Thailand. ) Buddhist monks in Thailand are too tired to receive early morning alms because they are staying up late to watch the World Cup, a Thai newspaper reported on Wednesday. The Nation quoted a woman in the northern city of Chiang Mai who said her birthday celebrations were ruined because monks at a city temple were not awake to receive her morning offering - a mandatory religious ritual in the predominately Buddhist country. The woman, who declined to be identified, said she was told by a senior monk that most of his young colleagues were still asleep because they had stayed up to watch the games which can go on well past midnight. The Sangha Council, which oversees the tens of thousands of Buddhist temples in Thailand, has not banned monks from watching the World Cup but said it should not interfere with religious activities. Chiang Mai chief monk Phra Thep Wisuthikhun said he had received complaints about "inappropriate behavior" at seven temples in the province. "It is the duty of the abbot of each temple to supervise the behavior of young monks, making sure that their religious activities will not be affected by the games," he told Reuters. In neighboring Cambodia, some 40,000 monks have been warned they could be defrocked if they became too excited while watching the games. "If they make noise or cheer as they watch, they will lose their monkhood," Phnom Penh patriarch Non Nget told Reuters this month.

Need A Cooker?  Use Your Cell Phone
http://www.hknet.org.nz/cell-phone-cookery.htm

By Sue Mueller
6-28-6

Many organizations including the cell phone industry often downplay the risk of cell phone radiation to the brain. Results from short-term studies were used to convince consumers that use of a cell phone is not associated with brain tumors or cancer, which only develop decades after exposure.

To be fair, no one knows exactly how much harm a cell phone can do to a person. Howe

Recently, new media has reported a study showing the radiation from cell phones is so full of energy they can be used to cook eggs.

In the experiment, researchers placed one egg in a porcelain cup (because it is easy to conduct heat), and put one cell phone on one side and another cell phone on the other. The researchers then called from one cell phone to another and kept the cell phones on after connecting.

During the first 15 minutes, nothing changed. After 25 minutes, however, the egg shell started to become hot and at 40 minutes, the surface of the egg became hard and bristled. Researchers found the protein in the egg had become solid although the egg yolk was still in liquid form. After 65 minutes, the whole egg was well cooked.

The study shows how scary cell phone radiation is. People should try to avoid use of cell phones. Although so far no one has proved the radiation from cell phones can cause something clinically significant. By the same token, there has been no one who can disprove the existence of such a risk.

Children should be forbidden from cell phone use because they still grow their brains and are particularly vulnerable to radiation.

How Two Russian Journalists Cooked An Egg - With Their Mobile Phones

http://www.RawFamily.com

Vladimir Lagovski and Andrei Moiseynko from Komsomolskaya Pravda Newspaper in Moscow decided to learn first-hand how harmful cell phones are. There is no magic in cooking with your cell phone. The secret is in the radio waves that the cell phone radiates.

The journalists created a simple microwave structure as shown in the picture. They called from one cell phone to the other and left both phones on talking mode. They placed a tape recorder next to phones to imitate sounds of speaking so the phones would stay on.

After 15 minutes: The egg became slightly warm.

25 minutes: The egg became very warm.

40 minutes: The egg became very hot.

65 minutes: The egg was cooked. (As you can see.)

Meat eaters face immunity scare
http://www.urbanmissionary.info/2006/06/23/meat-eaters-face-immunity-scare/

Posted Friday, June 23rd, 2006 at 11:32 AM under Commentary

From a recent news story:

PEOPLE who eat chicken, minced beef, pork chops and lettuce may develop an immunity to the drugs used to treat potentially fatal conditions such as meningitis and pneumonia.

Seven years after a landmark report by the Joint Expert Technical Advisory Committee on Antibiotic Resistance warned of drug immunity being passed through the food chain from animals to humans, an investigation is to be launched to measure the risk to consumers.

Scientists have long warned that the overuse of antibiotics, such as growth promoters in chicken, cattle and pigs, can breed drug-resistant bugs that may impede antibiotic treatments of diseases in humans.

The inquiry, due to be completed next May, will estimate the amount of antibiotic-resistant bacteria existing in food. Chicken, minced beef, pork-shoulder chops and iceberg lettuce heads will be the initial focus of the study, after overseas research identified them as containing common antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Canberra Hospital Infectious Diseases Unit director Peter Collignon welcomed the research, saying people had the right to know what they were eating.

“This is an issue and we need this data,” Professor Collignon said. “It is beyond doubt that whenever you use antibiotics, you get resistance. But the animal industry seems to be denying this is happening.

“In Australia we use 250,000kg of antibiotics in people every year. In animals we use 500,000kg…

(source: news.com.au)

Guys - this is why we don’t use iceberg lettuce at Atma Yoga.

With profit-driven farming, farmers are forced to maximize their profit in order to stay competitive. If they don’t use growth hormones to boost the production of meat they will be driven out of business. Using growth hormones accelerates the metabolism of the animal. The stress of accelerated metabolism combined with the conditions of factory farms make animals more susceptible to disease. In order to counteract this animals are routinely given massive amounts of antibiotics.

People then eat the bodies of these animals and in this way ingest large amounts of antibiotics and potentially antibiotic resistant bacteria.

This is what happens when you have meat eating and a profit driven economy.

The solution to this is a simple principle at a fundamental level - stop eating meat.

Swallowing a spider to catch the fly, and a bird to catch the spider, and then a cat to catch the bird, is not the right way to address these complex issues. Don’t swallow the fly in the first place!

Chennai schools crack down on junk food

Thursday, June 22, 2006 (Chennai):

A survey group will investigate food products available at canteens in private schools across Chennai.

The move comes in the wake of a government circular, which says colas, fries, chips and chocolates should be taken off the school canteens.

Though food is clean, Consumer Action Group says junk food can have a direct impact on the health of children as a result the schools have started taking measures.

"We realised that if we don't do it in school, its never going to take place. We have almost 2,300 children so we could do something with them," said Sister Preeti, the Principal of Good Shephard Convent.

Very few private schools have taken steps to remove junk food from canteens. Some schools even refused to say what was available in the canteen.

"Though schools know and preach that junk food is bad they still have junk food sold in the schools," said Kavitha Krishnakumar, Programme Officer, Consumer Action Group.

"It is primarily because schools make a lot of profit from the junk food," she added.

Recently a lizard's tail was found in rice provided to children at a government school in Chennai. Ninety-two children were rushed to hospital.

Americans Start Taking a New Look at the Ethics of Meat Eating

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/25/weekinreview/25bruni.html

UNITED STATES, June 25, 2006: This month Whole Foods announced that it would no longer sell live lobsters, saying that keeping them in crammed tanks for long periods doesn't demonstrate a proper concern for animal welfare. The Chicago City Council recently outlawed the sale of foie gras to protest the force-feeding of the ducks and geese that yield it. California passed a similar law, which doesn't take effect until 2012, and other states and cities are considering such measures. All of these developments dovetail with a heightened awareness in these food-obsessed times of what we eat: where it came from, what it was fed, how it was penned, and how it perished, says this insightful and informative article. If the success of best sellers like "Fast Food Nation" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and stores like Whole Foods is any indication, more Americans are spending more time mulling the nutritional, environmental and ethical implications of their diets. They prefer that their beef carry the tag "grass fed," which evokes a verdant pasture rather than a squalid feed lot, and that their poultry knew the glories of a "free range."

But the concerns are riddled with intellectual inconsistencies and prompt infinite questions. Are the calls for fundamental changes in the mass production of food simply elitist, the privilege of people wealthy enough to pay more at the checkout counter? Does fretting about ducks give people a pass on chicken? "Foie gras and lobster are not at the heart of the real tough issues of animal welfare, which are feed lots and pigs and cattle and chickens and how billions of animals are treated," said Michael Pollan author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma," which traces the messy back story of our meals. "On the other hand, the fact that we're having this conversation at all--that we're talking about ethics in relation to what we're eating every day--strikes me as a very healthy thing," he said last week.

Vedic Culture is the Parent of Humanity

By Stephen Knapp (Srinandananda dasa ACBSP)

The title of this page may seem like a bold statement, but there is some very interesting evidence to consider. As we established in the chapter on the creation of the material world, when the Supreme Being created the universe He also provided the Vedic knowledge and terminology by which humanity could live peacefully as well as advance spiritually. Even the Bible (Genesis 11:1) describes how originally during pre-Christian times, "the whole earth was of one language and one speech." And, as we can see from the evidence in the previous chapters, that language was Sanskrit.

Theologians in general agree that despite diverse scriptures and tales of various people experiencing or hearing the voice of God, the immanent Divinity is One. Even physicists agree that the ultimate source of all elements has to be one. History too began from a single point. This means that the origination of the universe as well as the beginning of mankind was a purposeful and arranged event. It was not a chance encounter, a random, freakish, or spontaneous beginning, but an expansion from the Absolute Truth.

Since there is but one ultimate source of everything, all human activity started from that divine beginning. And activity means thought and speech. As the Vedic texts explains, the original language was Sanskrit, as taught by the Supreme Himself. We find that even the 1951 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica (P. 70, Vol 13) describes that some scholars gave up attempts to explain the origin of language and have fallen back to the religious explanation that the first language was given by God to man.

Some people, however, feel that ancient man was able to only slowly develop a language of his own. This is thought to have started from grunts and noises like animals until it somehow shaped into the different languages we find today. So does that mean that babies will also develop some kind of language of their own if they are given enough time and not taught one? As described in P. N. Oak's book, World Vedic Heritage (p. 130), the 16th century Moghul emperor, Akbar, had also questioned this. Being in such a position of authority, he was able to indulge in a heartless experiment. He ordered several infant children to be taken away from their mothers and be confined to a house. No one was permitted to speak anything to the children, even when clothed and fed. The result was that they all grew to be dumb adults. They could speak no language at all. Neither did they develop any form of communication between themselves. Therefore, the idea that man will eventually educate himself or even develop a language on his own is mistaken. All knowledge must be given by a superior, which is exactly what the Vedic literature says happened at the beginning of time. The Vedic references explain that human civilization began by the arrangement of the Supreme. Man was given an original consciousness by which he had knowledge of the Sanskrit language and was guided by Vedic information, as taught by Lord Brahma and the numerous sages that followed. Thus, the ancient Vedic culture is the primordial culture of the whole world and not exclusive to India, Arabia, or Sumeria. It is universal.

The philosopher and researcher Edward Pococke also wrote about this conclusion in his book India in Greece (page 251). He states: "Sir William Jones concluded that the Hindus had an immemorial antiquity with the old Persians, Ethiopians and Egyptians, the Phoenicians, Greeks and Tuscans, the Scythians or Goths, and the Celts, the Chinese, Japanese and Peruvians." The observance of this global connection between India and the rest of the world is actually an indication that the whole world was once under the influence of the Vedic culture. Thus, it was India who nurtured the rest of the world with her wisdom and Vedic knowledge.

Pococke continues in this vein in his observation: "Now the whole of the society of Greece, civil and military, must strike one as being eminently Asiatic, much of it specially Indian. . . I shall demonstrate that these evidences were but the attendant tokens of Indian colonization with its corresponding religion and language. I shall exhibit dynasties disappearing from India, western India, to appear again in Greece, clans who fought upon the plains of Troy." Therefore, since Greece is supposed to be the origins of European culture, and since Greece displays much of the same culture as India, we can say that the pre-Christian culture of Europe was Vedic.

In fact, it may be the case that without the connection with India, Greece may not have been a major contributor to the advancement of Europe. Godfrey Higgins writes in his book The Celtic Druids (p. 112), "In science the Greeks were pygmies. What would they have known of science if their Platos and Pythagorases had not traveled into the East! In science and real learning they were inferior to the Orientals [Indians], and were the greatest liars upon earth. They wilfully mis-stated everything or they foolishly confounded everything."

William Durant, author of the 10-volume Story of Civilization, wrote, "India was the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of European languages. She was the mother of our philosophy. . . of our mathematics. . . of the ideals embodied in Christianity. . . of self-government and democracy. . . Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all."

Interestingly, Sir Isaac Tailor, the author of The Origins of the Aryans, wrote in a similar way (page 1), "Adelung, the father of comparative philosophy. . . placed the cradle of mankind in the valley of Kashmir, which he identified with paradise. To Adelung we owe the opinion, which has prevailed so widely, that since the human race originated in the East, most westerly nations, the Iberians and Celts, must have been the first to leave the parent."

As explained in World Vedic Heritage (p. 115), this is also the conclusion of Mr. B. C. Chhabra, who is the ex-Assistant Director General of Archeology under the British administration in India. He writes, "I do not want to go deep into the larger question of the theory of evolution which is today at the base of archeological interpretations, but I must need say that the history of Indian civilization begins with knowledge and not barbarism. The kind of knowledge that has been preserved therein has stood the test of time and is still unsurpassed in certain respects. It believes in an evolution of limited extent only and that for a definite period of time in the history of man's life as also in that of a nation. To base the entire history of mankind, down to the present-day, on the ape-man and the archeological ages of Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron is a travesty of facts. Even in the present age of great scientific achievements the ape-man cannot produce the homosapiens, obviously because they are two different species. Recent archeologists have proved abundantly that these ages have no meaning because different cultural ages are found in different regions, and that sometimes they co-existed in the same region which cannot be explained on the basis of the theory of evolution." Thus, regardless of the classifications made by archeologists about the ancient history of mankind, as confirmed by the prehistoric records of the Vedic literature, India was the center from where spread the intellectually superior Vedic culture, and is, therefore, the source of humanity's spiritual heritage.

The Preface of Vol. VI of Indian Antiquities (pp 11-13) also points one in this same direction: "The Hindu religion probably spread over the whole earth; there are signs of it in every system of worship. . . the arithmetic, astronomy, astrology, the holidays, games, names of the stars, and figures of constellations, the language of the different nations bear the strongest marks of the same origin."

The discerning and honest Christian author Godfrey Higgins wrote in his book, The Celtic Druids (p. 61), about the basis of all human civilization originating from India and the Vedic culture. "The peninsula of India would be one of the first peopled countries, and its inhabitants would have all the habits of progenitors of man before the flood in as much perfection or more than any other nation. . . In short, whatever learning man possessed before his dispersion. . . may be expected to be found here; and of this Hindustan affords innumerable traces. . . notwithstanding all. . . the fruitless efforts of our priests to disguise it."

The above quotes would indicate that the Vedic culture was a global faith, a world influence. This may be given further credence in the remarks of Ctesias, the Greek writer (as found in Historical Researches, Vol. II, p.220), "The Hindus were as numerous as all the other nations put together."

This is further corroborated in P. N. Oak's World Vedic Heritage (p. 506) in which he presents evidence that, "In pre-Christian times the temples of Vedic Deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, the Mother goddess, Rama, Hanuman, and Krishna used to abound in all regions of the world. Evidence of this is found in the works of ancient authors such as Megasthenes, Strabo, and Herodotus. All those names are of Vedic origin, too. The term Megasthenes is Megh-Sthan-eesh, i.e. the Lord of the Region of the clouds. The name Herodotus is Hari-dootus, i.e. Messenger of [Hari] God."

In Some Missing Chapters of World History (p. 134), P. N. Oak also explains that Shiva was worshiped all over the world, even in the Vatican. The word vatican comes from the Sanskrit word vatica, which means a bower or sylvan hermitage. He explains that even the premises of the Vatican have many Shiva emblems buried in their walls and cellars. Many such emblems have been dug up in other parts of Italy as well. And some of those found in the Vatican are still preserved in the Vatican's Etruscan museum.

Another point is that the original worship of the Mother Goddess can be traced back to India. Whether this Goddess is called Ma, Uma, Mata, Amba, Shakti, Durga, Bhagavati, Parameshvari, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Astarte, Venus, Ceres, Mother Mary, Mariamma, Madonna, Notre Dame, etc., it can be traced to the Vedic culture where such worship originated.

Albert J. Edmonds, in his book Buddhist and Christian Gospels, also explains that, "Strabo considered all Asia as far as India to be consecrated to Bacchus where Hercules and Bacchus are called Kings of the East. The last religions of Babylon and Egypt were born there. Even the Greeks and the Romans were debtors thereto for the cult of Bacchus and Mithras."

Bacchus refers to Bakesh or Tryambakesh, Shiva. Hercules refers to Hari-culeesh, Lord Krishna. They were known as Kings or supreme deities of the East. Since the religions of Babylon and Egypt were born in Asia, and Greeks and Romans observed a similar version of the Bacchus cult and one of Mithras, the sun, it is obvious the whole world followed, or was influenced by, Vedic culture. The reason is that all of these deities can be traced back to India, or are directly Vedic deities. From this information we can begin to understand that Vedic culture was a cause of worldwide unity, or the parent culture of all humanity.

 THE TIGER AND THE BRAHMIN

One time a tiger who was very hungry found a brahmana who was taking a bath, and was in the process of chanting the holy name.  So the tiger ate that brahmana, and the tiger was able to go back to Godhead by hearing that transcendental vibration.

MORAL:  The holy name is so powerful that it can even liberate the animals.

Hare Krishna,
Greetings! I am Jaya Gopala Dasa a disciple of His Holiness Giridhari Swami from the Philippines. I am humbly presenting your good yatra our Philippine made Jagannatha pendant and lapel pin. You can view the product by going to http://registration.myway.com

The beautiful face of Jagannatha is a bright, sweet pendant. Jagannatha's jewelry, eyes and smile are delicately outlined in gold. His face is surrounded by a lotus flower decorated with symbols commonly associated with Him: a golden club, lotus, conch, and chakra.

This enameled pendant is well-made with a nice weight that lets you know it's a quality piece of jewelry. It's about 1" tall and hangs from a thin golden loop that is wide enough to string on a favorite necklace, Tulasi neck beads, or a silk cord so you can hang it in your car even. In case of emergency (ICE) contact number
East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

Goes well with hot plain rice with a topping of ghee.

Mexican Vegetarian Fondoo and tortillas :

Ingredients for the Fondoo:
6 vegetarian sasauges
1 cup TVP
2 Red Capsicums
2 Green Capsicums
500 grams Chawawa cheese (or Mozzarella  cheese)

Ingredients for the Tortilla:
3 Cups Chapati flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp.  salt
4-6 Tbsp. vegetable shortening or ghee
about 1 1/4 cups warm water

Method for the Tortilla:
These need to be made first.

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Add vegetable shortening or ghee. Or use a combination of half ghee, half shortening.
Use a fork or a pastry cutter to cut in the shortening or just do it the old fashioned
way and use your hands.

Next add warm water a little at a time until your dough is soft and not sticky. You do
not need very hot water.

Knead the dough for a few minutes.

Now you will pull off pieces of dough to form about 12 small dough balls. Let them
rest for at least 10 minutes, longer if you like.

This is a good time to heat up the comal - or chapati iron. You will want to set it at medium to high
heat. If it is too hot the tortillas will cook too fast.

Now you can roll out the dough with your tortilla rolling pin or palote. It is a good
idea to dust each ball with a little flour just before you roll them out. Lay the palote
in the center of the dough ball and roll up, center and roll down. It is good to lift the
dough and turn it.  Again, rolling pin in the center and roll. Roll them out fairly thin.

Lay your tortilla on the hot comal. It takes just a few seconds to cook. Flip to the other
side, or use tongs. When they are done it should have lots of nice brown speckles. Place them in a
towel. If you would like you can use a tortilla warmer to keep them warm longer, if you have.

It is well worth the effort to make homemade tortillas! For Indians reading this, hey the chapatis you've been making for years will easily do the jobs.

Method for the fondoo:
Roast capsicums over flame burner until they go black. Put into a paper napkin and rub the black skin off, open the capsicums, take out the seeds, lay flat and cut into strips 3 inches long 1/4 inch wide, and put to one side.

Take the vegetarian sasauges out of their packing and skins so you just have the filling, and put into a very hot pot.

Add the soaked TVP, and the capsicums and toss together. Toss in the cheese and stir all together.

Take a spoonful of this fondoo and place it in the tortilla and roll it up.

They are ready to be offered and served!

Banana Soda Farls (low-fat)

Serve some banana flavoured soda bread for breakfast, drizzled in honey.

Serves 6 (hahaha should be in the joke section)
Ingredients:
200g (7oz) strong wholemeal flour
200g (7oz) plain flour, plus extra for kneading and dusting
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp caster (refined granulated) sugar
1 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
2 ripe bananas
250ml (9fl oz) buttermilk, or low-fat natural yoghurt
100ml (3½fl oz) semi-skimmed milk

Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Mix the flours, salt, sugar and bicarbonate of soda in a large bowl.

2. Peel the bananas and mash them to a pulp. Add to the flour with the buttermilk or yoghurt and enough semi-skimmed milk to make a firm (but not dry) dough. Knead lightly until smooth, then shape into a 23cm (9inch) round.

3. Cut the round into six wedges. Transfer to a non-stick baking sheet and sprinkle with a little flour. Bake for 20-30 minutes until browned and crusty. Cool on a wire rack.

Spiced Apple and Pecan Crumble with Mascarpone Vanilla Cream

Regarded as a 'classic' British dessert, you can serve this with ice cream or pouring cream, but I think the mascarpone vanilla cream is extra special.

Serves 6-8 (hahaha yeah right)
Ingredients:
1lb 8oz (700g) Bramley (cooking) apples, peeled, cored and quartered
8oz (225g) Cox’s (eating) apples, peeled, cored and quartered
1oz (25g) light muscovado or brown sugar
1 rounded tsp ground cinnamon
½ level tsp ground cloves
1/3 whole nutmeg, grated
4oz (110g) raisins
For the crumble:
4oz (110g) pecans
3oz (75g) chilled butter, cut into small dice
6oz (175g) self-raising flour, sifted
2 level tsp ground cinnamon
4oz (110g) demerara or brown sugar
For the mascarpone vanilla cream:
9oz (250g) mascarpone, at room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
7fl oz (200ml) fromage frais
3 tsp caster (refined granulated) sugar

You will also need a baking dish about 8 x 11in (20 x 28cm) and 2in (5cm) deep.

Method:
1. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6. Place the apple quarters into a bowl with the sugar, cinnamon, ground cloves, nutmeg and raisins, toss them all together then place them in the baking dish.

2. To make the crumble. Place the butter, sifted flour, cinnamon and sugar in a food processor and give it a whiz until it resembles crumbs. Next add the pecans and process again, not too fast, until they are fairly finely chopped but there are still a few chunky bits. If you don’t have a processor, in a large bowl, rub the butter into the sifted flour until it resembles crumbs, then stir in the cinnamon, sugar and pecans, which should be fairly finely chopped, by hand.

3. Sprinkle the crumble mixture all over the apples, spreading it right up to the edges of the dish and, using the flat of your hands, press it down quite firmly all over: the more tightly it is packed together, the crisper it will be.

4. Bake the crumble on the centre shelf of the oven for 35-40 minutes, by which time the apples will be soft and the topping golden brown and crisp. Meanwhile, mix together all the ingredients for the mascarpone vanilla cream until smooth, and chill until needed.

5. Leave the crumble to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving, then serve it warm with the mascarpone cream.

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat.
That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Laughter Therapy - its no joke:
http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/yod/march98/news.htm

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

 - hasya-grami  &  hasya-kara  ==> is expert at joking

One day a young Theravadin Buddhist on his journey home, came to the banks of a wide river. Staring hopelessly at the great obstacle in front of him, he pondered for hours on just how to cross such a wide barrier. Just as he was about to give up his pursuit to continue his journey he saw a great teacher on the other side of the river. The young Buddhist yells over to the teacher "Oh wise one , can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river"?

The teacher ponders for a moment  looks up and down the river and yells back "My son, you are on the other side" .

A church congregation decided to have four separate worship services each Sunday.

There was one section for those people who were new to the faith, another for regular members who preferred the
more traditional worship service, one for those who'd lost their faith and wanted to get it back, and a separate service for those who had had some unsuccessful experiences with other churches and had some complaints.

The four divisions are named Finders, Keepers, Losers, Weepers.

Flapping flag

Four Buddhist  monks were meditating in a monastery in the Himalayas near Katmandu. All of a sudden the prayer flag on the roof started flapping.

The younger monk came out of his meditation and said:  "Flag is flapping"

A more experienced monk said: "Wind is flapping"

A third monk who had been there for more than 20 years said: "Mind is flapping."

The fourth monk who was the eldest said, visibly annoyed: "Mouths are flapping!"

A well-developed young advertising secretary wore tight knit dresses that showed off her figure, especially when she walked.
Her young, aggressive boss motioned her into his office one afternoon and closed the door.
Pointing to her tightly covered derriere, he asked, "Is that for sale?"

"Of course not!" she snapped angrily, blushing furiously.

Unchanged, he replied quietly, "Then, I suggest you quit advertising it."

(With apologies to all the intelligent blondes!!)

A blonde goes into work one morning crying her eyes out. Her boss, concerned about all his employees' well being, asked sympathetically, "What's the matter?"

To which the blonde replies, "Early this morning I got a phone call saying that my mother had passed away."

The boss, feeling very sorry at this point, explains to the young girl. "Why don't you go home for the day. We aren't terribly busy. Just take the day off to relax and rest."

The blonde very calmly states......"No, I'd be better off here. I need to keep my mind off it and I have the best chance of doing that here."

The boss agrees and allows the blonde to work as usual... "if you need anything, just let me know."

Well, a few hours pass and the boss decides to check on the blonde. He looks out over his office and sees the blonde hysterically crying!!
He rushes out to her, asking, "What's so bad now........are you gonna be ok??"

"No......" exclaims the blonde. "I just got a call from my sister. She told me that HER mom died too!!"

A young executive was leaving the office at 6p.m. when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

"this is a very sensitive and important document, and my secretary has left.
Can you make this thing work?"

"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

"Excellent, excellent!" said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine.

"I just need one copy."

PAINTING, n. The art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather and exposing them to the critic.

Formerly, painting and sculpture were combined in the same work: the ancients painted their statues. The only present alliance between the two arts is that the modern painter chisels his patrons.
