The 108th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
of the appearance of
His Divine Grace
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA
http://www.prabhupada108.net/

1896 – 2004

Founder Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Celebrated By

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness

The year beginning on Prabhupada's Vyasa Puja September 6th, 2004, and ending with his Vyasa Puja on August 28, 2005 marks the 108th anniversary of his birth. While everyone honors 100th anniversaries, Vaisnavas place great significance on the 108th anniversary, because 108 is a special number. Krsna enjoys with 108 principal gopis (cowherd girls), there are 108 Upanishads, and a round of japa on beads is 108 Hare Krsna mantras. ISKCON has created a special opportunity to glorify Srila Prabhupada on his 108th birthday and throughout the year afterwards. ISKCON's governing body commissioners in their annual meeting this year passed the following resolution.

Whereas: The 108th anniversary of Srila Prabhupada's appearance can bring special inspiration to the devotee community by glorifying Srila Prabhupada.
Whereas: H.H. Lokanath Swami was successful in performing the service of Srila Prabhupada's Centennial Global Minister.

Resolved: ISKCON will make the celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th appearance anniversary year a highlight of its activities until Vyasa Puja 2005. H.H. Lokanath Swami will take up the service of global coordinator for this project.

In 1996 ISKCON celebrated Srila Prabhupada's Centennial.  Participation in events far exceeded expectations.  Throughout the Centennial year, followers of Srila Prabhupada made extraordinary efforts to spread his glories world wide by inundating their countries, states, and cities with the holy name of Krsna, Krsna prasadam, and Prabhupada's books.  Temples world wide joined in celebrating many spectacular special events.  Streets were named in Prabhupada's honor, and several biographies about him were published.  There were also many wonderful special achievements and offerings by individuals and groups.  but why was the Centennial so successful?  We could only conclude that it was because Krsna wanted to glorify Srila Prabhupada.  Krsna wanted to show the world that He is know as bhaktanama mana vardhanah, "He who enhances the reputation of His devotees."
Srila Prabhupada's teachings, which continue to be felt throughout all parts of ISKCON, are the universal inspiration for the 108 celebration.  All initiated devotees and all followers of Srila Prabhupada have a high level of awareness, appreciation, and remembrance of him.  They feel connected with him as their siksa guru, accepting as essential the teaching he gave in his books.  Inspired by his powerful presence, they follow his instructions in their own lives and are able to bring others to follow them too.
The celebration of Srila Prabhupada's 108th anniversary will focus on a series of public events.  most of the international events that were so successful in 1996 will be held again.  The events will bring about a heightened appreciation for Srila Prabhupada and his movement in the public and increase ISKCON's member's awareness of being part of a united worldwide movement.
The 108th Celebration is not limited to events.  The spirit of the Celebration is to encourage each ISKCON devotee, member and follower to make at least one personal offering to Srila Prabhupada during the year in one or more of the following areas:
1. Help spread Srila Prabhupada's mission by expanding the congregation, distributing books and chanting the holy name, especially at 108 events.
2. Dedicate oneself to glorifying Srila Prabhupada by personally meaningful special achievement during the 108th year.
3. Build personal internal strength by commitment to improving both personal spiritual standards and practices and those of your community.
The 108th Celebration is a great time to introduce the whole world to Srila Prabhupada and his mission.  Let us all take seriously this very special opportunity, and wholeheartedly glorify Srila Prabhupada.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 2 - Contents of the Gita Summarized

TEXT 71
                         vihaya kaman yah sarvan
                         pumams carati nihsprhah
                          nirmamo nirahankarah
                         sa santim adhigacchati

                             WORD FOR WORD

   vihaya--giving up; kaman--material desires for sense gratification; yah--who; sarvan--all; puman--a person; carati--lives; nihsprhah--desireless; nirmamah--without a sense of proprietorship; nirahankarah--without false ego; sah--he; santim--perfect peace; adhigacchati--attains.

                               TRANSLATION

A person who has given up all desires for sense gratification, who lives free from desires, who has given up all sense of proprietorship and is devoid of false ego--he alone can attain real peace.

PURPORT by HDG Sril a A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:

To become desireless means not to desire anything for sense gratification. In other words, desire for becoming Krsna conscious is actually desirelessness. To understand one's actual position as the eternal servitor of Krsna, without falsely claiming this material body to be oneself and without falsely claiming proprietorship over anything in the world, is the perfect stage of Krsna consciousness. One who is situated in this perfect stage knows that because Krsna is the proprietor of everything, everything must be used for the satisfaction of Krsna. Arjuna did not want to fight for his own sense satisfaction, but when he became fully Krsna conscious he fought because Krsna wanted him to fight. For himself there was no desire to fight, but for Krsna the same Arjuna fought to his best ability. Real desirelessness is desire for the satisfaction of Krsna, not an artificial attempt to abolish desires. The living entity cannot be desireless or senseless, but he does have to change the quality of the desires. A materially desireless person certainly knows that everything belongs to Krsna (isavasyam idam sarvam), and therefore he does not falsely claim proprietorship over anything. This transcendental knowledge is based on self-realization--namely, knowing perfectly well that every living entity is an eternal part and parcel of Krsna in spiritual identity, and that the eternal position of the living entity is therefore never on the level of Krsna or greater than Him. This understanding of Krsna consciousness is the basic principle of real peace.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

December 7th, 1975

Prabhupada derives great inspiration from the life of Prahlada Maharaja and often refers to his exemplary behavior when preaching. A recent letter from Yogescandra dasa requested Prabhupada's blessings for a party of eight men who are to collect funds for the Mayapur temple. "You always have my blessings," Prabhupada replied. "The father always wishes that the son may be more successful than himself. This is the spiritual conception. If one is doing well, then the materialistic persons become envious and try to check his progress. This was actually so with Prahlada Maharaja. He was only five years old, he was preaching Krsna consciousness to his school friends, and the father Hiranyakasipu became so envious that he attempted to kill his five-year-old son in so many ways. Krsna consciousness is just the opposite. If someone is doing well then the attitude of the devotee is to give him all facility to go on and improve more and more."

December 8th, 1975

Prabhupada is always concerned about our welfare -- not just philosophically, but in many practical ways as well. For example, this morning was very cold; winter is really setting in. He remarked about it on his walk and then asked if the devotees are getting ghee on their capatis. Aksayananda Swami replied that only the guests are given some because it's expensive and not necessary for the devotees.

But Prabhupada disagreed. He said that it is necessary in this season. In the cold weather the devotees must have a little extra ghee and grains. He recommended a mix of channa and urad dals as being both palatable and beneficial -- not too little and not too much. "Unnecessary vairagya," he said, "there is no need. We don't approve that. Yuktahara-viharasya. What you require for keeping health -- but not to eat too much. But what is absolutely required must be done."

Srila Prabhupada is quite pleased with Harikesa's article, "Experimental Knowledge." Last night he had him read it aloud. Then this morning as we walked, he asked him to reiterate some points for the other devotees to hear.

He injected some very amusing observations himself. Recalling his trip to South Africa he said there were many factories for chicken killing. "So I suggested that the egg, you can analyze. Find out the chemicals and create one egg. That was my proposal. "Motioning to Harikesa, he said, "So he is going to create!" We all laughed as Srila Prabhupada continued, "He'll explain how to create egg from... "

"From chemicals," Aksayananda Swami suggested.

And Jnana dasa added, "And make chicken."

Then Harikesa described, "Calcium phosphate and a little sulphur for the yellow. Make some color and cover it in plastic and put it in an incubator, and let a chicken grow."

"And you eat!" Prabhupada concluded.

Aksayananda Maharaja thought that would be a great article.

Prabhupada stopped and said seriously, "My only regret is that these rascals are going as scientists and big men. Simply talk. They cannot create. It is very simple thing. Put some chemicals together, and if you know the chemicals, then why don't you put it? And incubator put, then you don't require to kill so many chicken."

"Actually it's a wonderful challenge," Harikesa agreed. "This big, big scientist, big, big brain... "

But Prabhupada interrupted, "'Big, big monkey, big, big belly. Ceylon jumping -- melancholy!' You do not know this? Baro baro bandolel, baro baro pet, la"ka dingate, matakare het!"

We were all laughing as Prabhupada went on, "This translation was done by one big professor of President's College, Professor Rowe. So these professors required to learn Bengali, so he translated, 'Big, big monkey, big, big belly. Ceylon jumping -- melancholy!'"

Prabhupada was extremely humorous, and his descriptive analogies perfectly fit. Scientists are always full of big talk, saying that life comes from matter and that it is just a combination of chemicals. Yet life is occurring everywhere at every moment, and still they can neither say what the combination is, nor can they reproduce it. Similarly, the big monkey companions of Hanuman were full of bravado and boasts, but when it came to jumping across the ocean from India to Lanka they were "melancholy." Only Hanuman by the grace of Lord Rama could do it.

Nevertheless, despite his often humorous critiques and sometimes general condemnations of the modern materialistic scientists, Prabhupada cautioned us that any attempt to preach on a scientific basis must be done expertly. When Alanatha, a European devotee, told him of plans to publish a magazine in Sweden with articles challenging the material scientists, Prabhupada warned him. "Don't write anything nonsense. It must be very solid. Otherwise you'll be laughing stock. One must be confident before challenging others. In all stages he must be able to defend himself from the opposing elements. Then such challenge is all right. We are confident that this soul cannot be manufactured by any material combination. Therefore we can challenge. And we can defend ourselves in any stage."

Santosa: "In a temple of jewels in Vrndavana, underneath a desire tree, Sri Sri Radha-Govinda, served by Their most confidential associates, sit upon an effulgent throne. I offer my humble obeisances unto Them."

Prabhupada:

divyad-vrndaranya-kalpa-drumadhah-
srimad-ratnagara-simhasana-sthau
srimad-radha-srila-govinda-devau
prestalibhih sevyamanau smarami
 [Cc. Adi 1.16]

So, description of Vrndavana, Vrndavana and Radha and Krsna situated there. The Vrndavana... Vana means forest, and vrnda means tulasi. Mostly there are tulasi plants and other trees also, but all the trees are living desire trees, spiritual. They can serve Krsna in any way, desire. They have become trees by their voluntary desire. They're all spiritual beings -- there is no force -- but everyone has got a particular tendency to serve Krsna in a different way. So these trees and plants, they are also living beings. They are not ordinary living beings, but they have decided to serve Krsna by supplying fruits and flowers. They want that service. Everyone has got his particular propensity. So someone is serving as the land there, someone is serving as the throne, someone is serving as the supplying agent of fruits and flowers, someone is engaged in His service as the gopis, confidential servitors. The cows, calves, everything -- they are all different living entities. They are not made of these material things, material body. Ananda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhavitabhis tabhir ya eva nija-rupataya kalabhih [Bs. 5.37]. They are all also expansion of Krsna's pleasure potency. In one sense they are also Krsna; they are not different from Krsna. Sakti-saktimatayor abheda: "The power and the powerful, they are not different, identical." Just like the sun and the sunshine. So in the sun globe there is heat and light, and the sunshine, there is heat and light. So, so far heat and light is concerned, they are one. Similarly, Krsna and Krsna's pleasure potency, ananda-cinmaya, ahladini... It is already described, radha krsna-pranaya-vikrtir hladini-saktir asmat.

So whatever description is there of Vrndavana, that is expansion of Krsna's pleasure potency. They are not different. Therefore in the beginning it is said, divyad, "shining," or "divine," "transcendental." So we should not consider Vrndavana as ordinary forest. Here we have got Vrndavana on this planet. That is also not ordinary forest. The exactly the same Vrndavana as it is Goloka Vrndavana... There is no difference. Therefore Narottama dasa Thakura says that

visaya chadiya kabe suddha ha 'be mana
kabe hama herabo, sri-vrndavana

Visaya chadiya. Our present position is that we are materially diseased, so we have to become free from the material disease. Material disease means sense gratification, and the most formidable disease is sex. This is called material disease. So visaya chadiya. We have to be, become free from the contamination of visaya, material enjoyment. This is the statement of Narottama dasa Thakura.

visaya chadiya kabe suddha ha 'be mana
kabe hama herabo sri-vrndavana

"When my mind will be cleansed of all material desires, then I shall be able to see what is Vrndavana." It is very difficult to see Vrndavana with material desires. Bhakti means the first qualification is to become free from all material desires. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam.

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate
 [Cc. Madhya 19.170]

anyabhilasita-sunyam
jnana-karmady-anavrtam
anukulyena krsnanu-
silanam bhaktir uttama
 [Brs. 1.1.11]

You know all these definition of bhakti given in our Nectar of Devotion. So spiritual life means free from material desires. And material desires mean just to hanker after sense gratification. This is material desire. When we have no more desire for sense gratification, then we should think that we are on the spiritual platform.

So this description of Vrndavana is spiritually described; therefore in the beginning the word is used, divyad. Divyad means divine. Krsna says, janma karma ca me divyam [Bg. 4.9]. This is not ordinary material thing. So desire tree also described in the Brahma-samhita: Cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa [Bs. 5.29] -- the same kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam, laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam. This laksmi-sahasra-sata-sevyamanam is described here as presthalibhih sevyamanau. Prestha-alibhih. Prestha means very dear, and ali means gopis, associates of Radharani, friends. So they are all Laksmis, goddess of fortune. Laksmi... You have heard the name Laksmi, Laksmi-Narayana, associates of Narayana. Krsna is Narayana. So all these gopis, they are expansion of Srimati Radharani, the original Laksmi. This is spiritual world. It is not impersonal, neither nirakara, formless. Everything form, but that form is different from this form. That form is sat-cid-ananda form -- eternal, full of bliss, full of knowledge. This is not this material form. When we speak of formless, that means without any material form. Formless does not mean Krsna and His expansion, they are formless. They are not of material form. Aprakrta, not material. Here everything is prakrta. It is not, neither, eternal nor blissful nor full of knowledge. It is temporary, full of ignorance and always miserable, this form. We can understand it.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

Love affairs in the material world are only shadows

or reflections of the real love with Krishna. If you

love Krishna in any capacity, you shall never be

frustrated because everything in Krishan is perfect,

eternal,blissful,and full of Knowledge.

Quotes from Shastra - scriptures

urdha puëòram måjuà saumyaà sacihnaà dhärayed yati
sa caëòälo'pi çuddhätmä püjya eva sadä dvijaiù

A caëòäla who is a pure Vaiñëava at heart and who decorates the eleven parts of his body with viñëu-tiläka and sandalwood paste is always worshipable, even by the best of brähmaëas. (Padma Puräëa, Uttatra Khaëòa 66.84)

sakåt praëämé kåñëasya mätuù stanyaà pibenna hi
haripäde mano yeñäà tebhyo nityaà namo namaù
pukkasaù çvapaco väpi ye cänye mleccha-jätayaù
te'pi vandyä mahäbhägä haripädaika-sevakäù

One who even once completely gives up false ego and offers obeisances to the lotus feet of Kåñëa will never have to take birth again. One who keeps the holy feet of Hari within his mind is always worthy of worship. Whether one is a pukkasaü, a dog-eater, or a mleccha, if he takes shelter of the lotus feet of Çré Hari with pure devotion, and serves Him with attachment, is to be considered most fortunate and highly worshipable. (Padma Puräëa, Svarga Khaëòa, 50.10)

aho bata çva-paco 'to garéyän yaj-jihvägre vartate näma tubhyam
tepus tapas te juhuvuù sasnur äryä brahmänücur näma gåëanti ye te

O Lord, how glorious are they whose tongues always chant Your holy name! Even if born in a family of dog-eaters, such persons are worshipable. Those who chant Your holy name must have performed all kinds of austerities and sacrifices. They must have achieved all the good qualities of the Äryans. They must have bathed at all the holy places, studied the Vedas, and fulfilled all to chant the Vedas and perform yajïa. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 3.33.7)

brähmaëänäà sahasrebhyaù satrayäjé viçiñyate

sarva-vedänta-vit-koöyä viñëu-bhakto viçiñyate
vaiñëavänäà sahasrebhya ekänty eko viçiñyate

Among many thousands of brähmaëas, a yajïika brähmaëa is best. Amount thousands of yajïika brähmaëas, one who fully knows Vedänta is best. Among millions of knowers of Vedänta, one who is a devotee of Viñëu is best. And among thousands of devotees of Viñëu, one who is an unalloyed Vaiñëava is best. (Bhakti-sandarbha 177)

dharma-mülaà hi bhagavän sarva-vedamayo hariù
småtaà ca tad-vidäà räjan yena cätmä prasédati

The Supreme Person is the root of all dharma, the essence of all the Vedas, and the meditation of all those great authorities who know the truth about the Supreme Lord, and whose opinions becomes scripture. This is evidence, O King, and by accepting this religious principle, everyone will attain the highest satisfaction of the soul, mind, and body. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 7.11.7)

tapastu täpaiù prapatastu parvatä-daöantu térthani paöhastu cägamän
yajastu yägairvivadantu vädair harià vinä naiva måtià taranti

You may perform mountains of austerities, visit many holy places, study all the Vedas, and perform all kinds of Vedic sacrifices, but without devotion to Kåñëa, none of these things can save you from death. (Bhävärtha Dépikä 10.87.27)

etävän eva loke 'smin puàsäà dharmaù paraù småtaù
bhakti-yogo bhagavati tan-näma-grahaëädibhiù

It is recognized that the highest religious principle in human society is devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, beginning with the chanting of the holy name of the Lord, näma-saäkértana. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 6.3.22)

courtesy of www.Vedabase.com

näma cintämaëiù kåñëaç caitanya-rasa-vigrahaù
pürëah-çuddho nitya-mukto'bhinnatvän näma nämiëoù

The holy name of Kåñëa is a transcendental wish fulfilling gem it bestows all spiritual benedictions, for it is Kåñëa Himself. It is the personification of divine mellow, the fountainhead of all pleasure. The holy name of Kåñëa is eternally liberated and spiritual. This is because the name of Kåñëa and Kåñëa Himself are nondifferent. (Çré Bhakti-rasämåta-sindhu, Pürva-Vibhägaga 2.233)

ekam eva sac-cid-änanda-rasädi-rüpaà tattvaà dvidhä-virbhütam

The Supreme Absolute Truth is one reality whose form is eternal, fully cognizant, and ecstatic. That Absolute reality who is the origin of all rasa appears in two forms, as Kåñëa Himself and as the holy name of Kåñëa. These two forms are nondifferent manifestations of the same eternal reality Kåñëa. (Bhakti-rasämåta-sindhu, Pürva-Vibhäga 2.233, Jéva Gosvämé's Durgama-saågamané commentary)

The Vedas Sing the Glories of the Holy Name

oà äsya jänanto näma cid-viviktan mahante viñëo sumatià bhajämahe
oà tat sat

This mantra means, "O Lord Visnu, Your name is conscious (cit) and therefore self-effulgent (mahas) and so even one with partial knowledge of the eternal nature of Your name, and incomplete understanding of the glory of proper chanting, can attain knowledge of You merely by repeating the syllables, because You, who are known by Om, are self-existent (sat)." Thus it is seen that the name liberates a person from fear and envy even if alluded to. (Bhagavata-Sandarbha 47)

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. From the Great Favor, a Harmonist article, by Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada:

"A chanter of the Kirtan of Hari is necessarily the uncompromising enemy of wordliness and hypocrisy. As chanter of the Kirtan of Hari, it is the constant function to dispell all misconceptions by the preaching of the truth in the most unambiguous form without any respect of person, place or time. That form is to be adopted which is least likely to be misunderstood. It is his bounden duty to oppose clearly and frankly any person who tries to deceive and harm himself and other people by misrepresenting the Truth due to malice or bonafide misunderstanding.

This will be possible if the chanter of Kirtan is always prepared to submit to be trodden by thoughtless people if any discomfort to himself will enable him to do good to his persecutors by chanting the Truth in the most unambiguous manner. If he is unwilling or afraid of considerations of self-respect or personal discomfort to chant the Kirtan under all circumstances he is unfit to be a preacher of the Absolute Truth. Humility implies perfect submission to the Truth and no sympathy for untruth. A person who entertains any partiality for untruth is unfit to chant the kirtan of Hari. Any clinging to untruth is opposed to the principle of humility born of absolute submission to the truth.

Those who serve the Truth at all time, by means of all their faculties, and have no hankering for the trivialities of this world, are always necessarily free from malice born of competing worldliness and are, therefore, fit to admonish those who are actively engaged in harming themselves and others by the method of opposing or misrepresenting the Truth in order to attain rewards of such policy in the shape of a perpetuation of the state of misery and ignorance. The method which is employed by the servant of the good preceptor for preventing such misrepresentation of the truth is a part and parcel of the truth itself.

It may not always be pleasing to the diseased susceptibilities of deluded minds and may even be denounced by them as a malicious act with which they are only too familiar, but the words of truth from the lips of a loyal and humble servant of Hari possess such beneficent power that all effort to suppress or obstruct them only serves to vindicate to impartial minds the necessity of complete submission to the Absolute Truth as the only cure of the disease of wordliness. Humility that is employed in the unambiguous service of the Truth is necessarily and qualitatively different from its perverted prototype which is practised by the cunning people of this world for gaining their worldly ends. The professors of pseudo-humility have reason to be afraid of the preachings of the servants of Hari -- one of whose duties is to expose the enormous possibility of mischief that is possessed by the forms of so-called spiritual conduct -- when they are taken to task for serving the untruth.

Shrila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura quotes:

Patrikara Uddesya, Sajjana Tosani:

"In the name of bhakti in many places people are engaged in illicit or anti-bhakti activities in the name of practicing bhakti. If one does not expose those issues (cases) very clearly, then pure-bhakti will never be victorious or be established."

Bheka-dharana, Sajjana Tosani.

"One should compulsorily engage in endeavouring to trying to uplift the Vaisnava-dharma from the mud of contamination and trying to free it from all kinds of dauratmya (wrong ideas and practices)."

"Conversions Are a Part of Hinduism, Too"
http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=47071&headline=Conversions~are~part~of~Hinduism,~too

UK, May 20, 2005: Sooraj Ratnakumar of the UK writes in Express India:  "Many Hindus pride themselves on account of their secular ideal of non-proselytism. They believe that Hinduism has never indulged in converting people of other religions to its own, and some go further to demonstrate the unwillingness of many of today's saints to accept followers of other religions into their fold. Amongst adherents of the non-proselytising history of Hinduism, there exist, on the one hand, those who wish it to remain so owing to the secularist principle of the ideal. On the other hand, there are also those who sincerely believe that Hinduism should transform into at least a passively proselytizing religion to survive the onslaught of the, not only actively, but aggressively, proselytizing Abrahamic religions. On reading many accounts in Indian history of conversions from Hinduism to other religions and re-conversions as well as original conversions from other religions to Hinduism, I find it hard to believe that Hinduism has been a non-proselytizing religion. While I agree with the self-evident fact that Hinduism is not militant in its evangelistic zeal as contrasted with the forced and threatened conversions by Islam or the deceitful and bribed conversions by Christianity, Hinduism, on many instances in the past, has indulged in active proselytizing mainly by means of dialectics."

Indian Names Make the USA's Top 1,000 Baby Name List
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1362312,00050001.htm?headline=Guess!~Most~used~Indian~baby~name~in~US

SILICON VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, May 15, 2005: Arjun, the warrior-prince of the Mahabharata, and Maya were the most popular names given to baby boys and girls respectively by Indians in the United States. The name Arjun was given to 247 boys last year, ranking it 741 in the list of 1,000 most popular baby names in the US, compiled by the Department of Social Security Administration. The popularity of the name has been increasing steadily since 2001 when it was ranked 977. Aditya, the most popular name for the year 2003, ranked 743 as the second most popular Indian choice. The name was chosen for 246 babies. Other male names that found a place in the list of 1000 are Pranav, Samir, Nikhil, Arnav, Rishi and Rahul. Among female Indian names, Maya ranked first (85 overall rank), followed by Tara (323) and Shreya (853). Overall, Emily and Jacob remained the top names for girls and boys respectively in the United States. Emily has been the most popular female name since 1996, while Jacob has been topping the chart since 1999 for boys.

India as a girl's name ranked 478th position, a tribute to the lasting legacy of the 1939 movie "Gone With the Wind" in which a principle female character was named "India Wilkes"--and, incidentally, the planation featured in the film was named "Tara."

Brutal Destruction of heritage hills in Braj
Text PAMHO:9434738 by Parvati (dd) ACBSP (Vrindavan - IN)
------------------------------------------------------------
I signed the petition a couple of days back and there were only 420 signatures. So few! This mining is a real threat to Vaisnava history and culture.

I lived in Mangalore for some time, and the area around Mangalore was full of palm studded hills, very beautiful. But then a company moved in and completely flattened half a dozen hills to build an oil refinery, and devastated a huge huge area.

Also I can never forget going on one of the early ISKCON Vraja parikramas, and on one of the last days of the parikrama discovering the flaming exhaust tower of the Mathura oil refinery blasting out just near our dharmasalla. I never knew there was an oil refinery in Vraja. Now there is McDonalds. I also heard that the enchanting soft dusty parikrama path of Vrindavan town has just been paved over with concrete and stones, where will this all end?

Do we want the time to come when Vraja is so badly damaged that there is nothing at all to relate to? As it is even though Vrindavan town is getting more and more built up, at least one can visit the relatively untouched beauty of Krsnas extensive Vraja pastimes, but now even this is endangered!

While we understand that the real Vraja can never be destroyed still the land of Vraja that is manifest to our material senses is an invaluable source of inspiration and hope. If we can help to preserve it by going through the effort of signing an online petition, lets at least do that.

So please all devotees, register your complaint and sign on to this petition to save Vraja from destruction.

You can sign the petition at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/Barsana/petition.html

Worst Fast Food Choices
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/homerealestate/feature.jsp?story=worstfastfoods

By Sabrina Rogers

AskMen.com's Nutrition Correspondent

By now, it's probably not news to you that most fast food choices are bad for your health. Packed with artery-clogging, heart-attack-causing amounts of calories, fat and sodium, many fast food items are essentially death traps in little cardboard boxes.

While most fast food chains have added "healthy" or "light" items to their menus over the past couple of years, an opposite trend can also be observed: many of them are also producing new menu choices with a record high amount of calories, fat and sodium. These companies defend the availability of these unhealthy items by saying they "meet an important demand."

Don't get sucked in. You'll be putting yourself at risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and many more unsightly diseases, many of which can kill you. In an effort to help you make decent fast food choices, I have picked some of the worst fast foods on the market and provided all the essential nutritional information.

"In this case it would seem to find an episode of the life of Krishna avatara (that is one earthly manifestation) of the Indian God Vishnu."..... "That constitutes an ulterior test of the existence of intense relationships with India even if today little documented traces remain."

http://www.vedicempire.com/centasia2.htm
Indeed, between the decorations of sogdiane several the external panels of its sarcophagus they can be noticed divinity between which the God Weshparkar seated on three protomi of Taurus and with a trident in hand (fig. 16). In the below part of the same panel two zoroastriani clergymen fortified of one appear also particular mask still used in Iran and India during some rituals and one procession of animals from load on a bridge. Draft of the Chinvat bridge, the passage that the defunct one is held to cross during its trapasso in the zoroastriane sideboards. According to the zoroastriani religious witnesses the spirit of the defunct one must exceed several stations before catching up the paradise. To every station one is premail divinity between which, exactly, Weshparkar. The trident and the Taurus are its characteristic attributes clearly taken to loan from the iconography of the divinity hindu, in this case from Shiva. The Sogdiani, in fact, a process absorbed many elements of the religious iconography Indian second still little clearly but that it goes dated to 6th century B.C. approximately. That constitutes an ulterior test of the existence of intense relationships with India even if today little documented traces remain.

Also the funerary bed exposed recently to several Paris extension panels decorates second the iconography to you Hindu. Three are the more interesting panels from this point of view both dominate to you from figures of probable divine nature. The first panel ritrae an endowed personage of four arms placed side by side from two archers on a throne to lotiforme base (fig. 17). Such attributes send back immancabilmente to a particular aspect of the God of the Indian sun Surya. Moreover, the discs concentrate us to the shoulders of the personages recall a solar symbolism exactly. The other interpretable scene in key Hindu regards a panel with an aquatic scene in which a male personage notices itself attempt scoccare an arrow towards the high while it is seated astride of a large bovine dipped in the flutti together other monstrous beings (fig. 18). In this case it would seem to find of forehead to an episode of the life of Krishna that others was not if not avatar (that is one earthly manifestation) of the Indian God Vishnu. The last panel, a lot ruined, ritrae a personage from the ventre prominent seated on one skin elephant and encircled from tralci of grape (fig. 19). Perhaps also this personage is interpretable as a divine being in how much the Sogdiani seems to have adopted the iconography of Indra in order to adapt it to that one of Ahura Mazda, the supreme gentleman of just pantheon. However he is not excluded that raffigurazione of Kubera for via of the belly of the God and the grape bunches can be a matter also of one.

Cracking Nuts with a Salagrama

A landlord once appointed a professional priest for regular offerings to his family Salagrama. The landlord used to arrange for the daily offering of some chestnuts for the satisfaction of Sri Narayana.

The priest accordingly used to take the chestnuts inside the Deity room and close the door as if he were going to offer them to the Deity. In fact the priest would use the Salagram as an ordinary stone, convenient for cracking the chestnuts. After cracking them with the Salagrama and keeping them on the sandalwood stone, he ate many of them even before offering.

In course of time, his mischief came to light and the landlord then threw him out by the neck.

PURPORT

Those who desire for some sense gratification with self-interest or for liberation without devotional service, or for women, wealth and prestige, usually take recourse to such habits as cracking the nuts with a Salagrama.

One who plans to earn money and fame by performance of Gita and Bhagavatam lectures relating to religion, through publication and compilation of religious treatises, organising congregational sankirtana or offering esoteric mantras simply for his own sense gratification, may very well be indicated as one who makes an attempt to crack nuts with a Salagrama.

In fact, all professional narrators of scriptural and mythological anecdotes, and businessman-like glorifiers of the Lord are trying to crack nuts with a Salagrama, which means that they are using everything offered to the Lord simply for their own sense gratification.

There are persons who pretend to be living in association with devotees in a math, but are simply looking for facilities for their own self-interest and actually make personal use of the society of devotees instead of offering services to such society, and enjoy Lord Sri Krsna?s property without the slightest interest in offering services for the satisfaction of the Lord.

These so-called devotees are similar to the professional priests who try to crack nuts with a Salagrama, and they practise devotional services that are not considered sincere or honest. It is thus said that any prayer to the Lord for religion, wealth peace or liberation is tantamount to cracking a nut with a Salagrama.

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

2 teaspoons grated ginger
1 tsp hing
1 cup tomatoes, chopped
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)
1 small firm head of cabbage chopped finely
1 teaspoon chilli powder
2 teaspoons coriander (dhania) powder
¼ cup curds
1 tablespoon chopped coriander

2. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.
3. Roll out each portion into a 200 mm. (8") diameter circle.
4. Cook each chapati lightly on both sides on a hot tava (griddle) and keep aside.

For the rajma filling
1. Drain the kidney beans, add 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles till the rajma is overcooked.
2. Drain any excess liquid and keep aside.
3. Heat the oil in a pan, add the hing, ginger and saute till the finely chopped cabbage until it is light brown in colour.
4. Add the tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and salt and cook till the oil separates.
5. Add the cooked beans and mix well.
6. Add the curds and continue cooking till the mixture is dry.

2. Sprinkle some spring onions and 1 tablespoon of cheese.
3. Bring in all sides of the chapati towards the centre to enclose the filling and make a square paratha.  4. Seal the edges with a little water.
5. Repeat to make 3 more parathas.

Kathal Curry - Curried green jackfruit.

Serves : Six
Time required : 25 minutes

Ingredients
1 kg green jackfruit (kathal) (or three cans jackfruit)
4 tbsp (60 ml) oil
4 medium-sized (250 g) potatoes, peeled and cut into 3 cm cubes
1/2 tsp (2.5 g) sugar
salt to taste
1 tsp (5 g) garam masala powder

Grind together with a little water:
3 dry red chillies
1 tbsp (15 g) cummin seeds
1 tbsp (6 g) coriander seeds
1/2 tsp (2 g) turmeric powder

For the tempering:
1 tbsp (15 g) ghee
2-3 bay leaves (tej patta)
1/4 tsp (1 g) cummin seeds

Method
Peel the outer skin of jackfruit. Remove seeds, if any. Discard the fibrous portion, retaining only the ‘meaty’ portion. There is a layer of skin between the seed and the fruit. Ensure that this is also removed and discarded. Cut jackfruit into bite-sized pieces. Place in a pan with water and boil for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Drain well.

Heat oil in a kadai (wok) or deep frying pan. Fry potatoes until lightly browned. Remove from pan, drain and set aside.

Add jackfruit and saute for a few minutes. Remove from pan, drain and set aside. Add ground paste, sugar and salt to pan. Stir well and fry for several minutes, sprinkling water when necessary. Stir in 1 1/2 cups water and add jackfruit and potatoes. Simmer gently until both are cooked and there is gravy in the pan.

Heat ghee for tempering in a separate pan or kadai. Add bay leaves and cummin. Stir-fry until they stop spluttering. Pour on to the vegetables and sprinkle in the garam masala powder. Stir well and cook for a minute longer. Serve hot with rice or chapati.

Put into an oven preheated to 200oC (400oF) and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Serve with a salad.

“If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat.
That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it.
Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Four Wives parable:

Why did the priest giggle in church?
Mass hysteria

The owner and manager at Patels Corner shop Dairy was given the task of hiring an individual to fill a job opening. After sorting through a stack of resumes he found four people who were equally qualified. He decided to call the four in and ask them only one question. Their answer would determine which of them would get the job. The day came and as the four sat around the conference room table the interviewer asked, "What is the fastest thing you know of?"

Acknowledging the first man on his right, the man replied, "A THOUGHT". It just pops into your head. There's no warning that it's on the way; it's just there. A thought is the fastest thing I know of."

"That's very good!" replied the interviewer. "And now you sir?" he asked the second man.

"Hmm.... let me see. A blink! It comes and goes and you don't know that it ever happened. A BLINK is the fastest thing I know of."

"Excellent!" said the interviewer. "The blink of an eye, that's a very popular cliché for speed." He then turned to the third man who was contemplating his reply.

"Well, out at my dad's farm, you step out of the house and on the wall there's a light switch. When you flip that switch, way out across the pasture the light in the barn comes on in less than an instant. Yep, TURNING ON A LIGHT is the fastest thing I can think of."

The interviewer was very impressed with the third answer and thought he had found his man. "It's hard to beat the speed of light" he said. Turning to Brajendra, the fourth and final man, the interviewer posed the same question.

Old Brajendra replied, "After hearing the three previous answers, It's obvious to me that the fastest thing known is DIARRHEA."

"WHAT!?" said the interviewer, stunned by the response.

"Oh I can explain." said Old Brajendra. "You see the last week I was in India, and I wasn't feeling so good and I ran for the bathroom. But, before I could THINK, BLINK, or TURN ON THE LIGHT, I had already filled up my pants.

Old Brajendra iz the new shelf filler at the Patels Corner shop Dairy.

Maharaj to fallen conditioned soul:

.......just as a third class person never learns from a painful experience,
and a second class person learns simply by the experience, while a first class person learns from the mistakes of others.

It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Reminds me of the story of the Gurukuli going to their mother and telling her of the dead cat body laying in the courtyard of the temple. The mother consoled the child "It's okay Lalita the cats gone to Krishna now" to which the little girl retored "What does Krishna want with a dead cat?????"

.A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday.

"I'd love to be eight again." she replied.

On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her off to the local theme park.

What a day! He put her on every ride in the park:
     * the Death Slide,
     * the Wall of Fear,
     * the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster,
     * every thing there was.

Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down.

Right away, they journeyed to a McDonald's where her loving husband ordered her :
     * a Happy Meal
     * with extra fries
     * and a refreshing chocolate shake.

Then it was off to the movies:
     * the latest Star Wars epic,
     * a hot dog,
     * popcorn,
     * all the Coke she could drink,
     * and her favourite lolly, M&M's.

What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.

He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, "Well, Dear, what was it like being eight again?"

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed.... "I meant my dress size, you flaming moron"

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, and all the good intention in the world, he's gonna get it wrong.

A priest and a pastor from the local churches are standing by the side of  the road, pounding a sign into the ground, that reads:

   The End is Near!
   Turn Yourself Around Now!
   Before it's Too Late!

As a car sped past them, the driver yelled,
"Leave us alone, you religious nuts!"
From the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash.

The pastor turns to the priest and asks, "Do you think the sign should just say 'Bridge Out'? "

This blonde decides one day that she is sick and tired of all these blonde jokes and how all blondes are perceived as stupid, so she decides to show her husband that blondes really are smart.

While her husband is off at work, she decides that she is going to paint a couple of rooms in the house. The next day, right after her husband leaves for work, she gets down to the task at hand.

Her husband arrives home at 5:30 and smells the distinctive smell of paint. He walks into the living room and finds his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat. He notices that she is wearing a parka and a leather jacket at the same time.

He goes over and asks her if she is ok. She replies yes. He asks what she is doing. She replies that she wanted to prove to him that not all blonde women are dumb, and she wanted to do it by painting the house.

Then he asks her why she has a parka over her leather jacket.

She replies that she was reading the directions on the paint can and it said..........

The new father was left with the baby all day while mom went hopping for some unmaternity clothes. When she returned she went to check on the baby. The smell was overpowering. She found the disposable diaper full and leaking. She was furious!

She confronted her husband, "Didn't you bother to check the baby's diaper all day?"

The new dad responded, "Well, the box says it's good for up to eight pounds!"

The other day I was standing in the park wondering why Frisbees get bigger and bigger the closer they get.

A man realized he needed to purchase a hearing aid, but he felt unwilling to spend much money. "How much do they run?" he asked the clerk.

"It depends on quality," said the salesman. "They run from $2.00 to $2,000."

"Let's see the $2.00 model," he said.

The clerk put the device around the man's neck. "You just stick this button in your ear and run this little string down to your pocket," he instructed.

"How does it work?" the customer asked.

"For $2.00 it doesn't work," the salesman said. "But when people see it on you, they'll talk louder!"

Sarah was reading a newspaper, while her husband was engrossed in a magazine.

Suddenly, she burst out laughing. "Listen to this," she said.
"There's a classified ad here where a guy is offering to swap his wife for a season ticket to the stadium."

"Hmmm," her husband said, not looking up from his magazine.

Teasing him, Sarah said, "Would you swap me for a season ticket?"

"Absolutely not," he said.

"How sweet," Sarah said. "Tell me why not."

"Season's more than half over," he said.

Thanx 2 Jai Simmam prabhu in Singapore for that gem found in Hinduism today

A 90 year man was having a checkup and the doc asked how he was feeling.

"Better" he replied, "I've got an 18yr old wife who's pregnant. What's your opinion Doc?"

The doc said,  "Well let me tell a story. I know a hunter. One day in a hurry he accidentally grabs umbrella instead of a gun.
He's walking in the woods and suddenly he spots a lion. He raises his umbrella and squeezes the handle. BAM! The lion drops dead"

"That's impossible! Someone else must have shot that lion"

"Exactly!" said the Doc.
