Welcome to the latest re-vamped edition of the on-line HKSRNewsletter, and our humble attempt to render some service to the devotee community. As you can see we've changed the format, and everything is here hyper-linked on-line, we hope it's now easier for you all. This newsletter now goes out to way over 2108 receivers. I trust that all is well with everyone by the Mercy of the Lord. However, if anyone would like to be removed please just send me a message requesting me to do so, and I will do it promptly. If you are receiving this from a friend, and would like to be added directly to the mailout please also let me know and I will do the needful there too. Removal and Subscription details at the very end of this newsletter.
NOTE:
Just a quick message to let you all know that I have to put the newsletters
on hold for a short time as I will be overseas as from Friday 11th June.
Sorry for the inconvenience. I've just put together a quick newsletter
to show all up-coming events. Please put all questions and correspondence
on hold I'll notify you all when I get back to NZ so that by the mercy
of the Lord we can continue.
Actually my birth mother is in the process of passing
away, she's had two strokes over the past two weeks is hospitalized and
the hospital gave me the word to come and be at her side. She's done a
lot of service over the years; visiting 7 Bury place temple, Bhaktivedanta
Manor, Soho street, Melbourne and Auckland temples, she's taken heaps of
prasadam, given heaps of donations, she's sat in at yajnas, and weddings,
swept temple room floors and prasadam halls, looked after devotee children
and even lead kirtans among them and encouraged them to chant and dance
in front of the Lord. She wears Tulasi neck beads on her body also.
At the time of my father's passing away she was
chanting the holy names Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare
Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare into his ear, each time she
did so he grasped her wrist consciously hearing as he slipped away. She
then gave a nice donation to arrange for a set of clothes for Krishna Balaram
in Vrindavan in his name, sponsored a feast for the devotees in Vrindavan
in his name, fed the cows at the goshalla in his name, and sponsored Iskcon
Food Relief (the fore runner of Food For Life) in his name. There's no
doubt she's a devotee. So we are asking on her behalf that you kindly wish
her well on her journey to a new body where she take better take up Krishna
consciousness free from her previous material conditioning that held her
back somewhat, and with all the service that she did, pray that the Lord
bestow His kind blessings upon her.

jnanam--knowledge; karma--work; ca--also; karta--worker; ca--also; tridha--of three kinds; eva--certainly; guna-bhedatah--in terms of different modes of material nature; procyate--are said; guna-sankhyane--in terms of different modes; yatha-vat--as they are; srnu--hear; tani--all of them; api--also.TRANSLATION
According to the three different modes of material nature, there are three kinds of knowledge, action and performer of action. Now hear of them from Me.PURPORT by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
In the Fourteenth Chapter the three divisions of the modes of material nature were elaborately described. In that chapter it was said that the mode of goodness is illuminating, the mode of passion materialistic, and the mode of ignorance conducive to laziness and indolence. All the modes of material nature are binding; they are not sources of liberation. Even in the mode of goodness one is conditioned. In the Seventeenth Chapter, the different types of worship by different types of men in different modes of material nature were described. In this verse, the Lord says that He wishes to speak about the different types of knowledge, workers and work itself according to the three material modes.Copyright 1983 The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust International. Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
Drops of nectar
While Prabhupada was living in Los Angeles in 1969, he got a letter from one of his relatives stating that one of his brothers had died. Prabhupada received this information in the presence of some of the devotees and he informed them, "I have just received this letter saying that my brother died. Previously my other brother died. These two brothers were very nice. They wanted, to live long, healthy lives, but they didn't care so much for Krsna consciousness." "But my sister and I," Prabhupada laughed softly, "we didn't want to live long, healthy lives. We only wanted to do some service, and when Krsna wanted to, He would take us. But now I see that my two brothers are both dead, and my sister and I are living long, happy lives."
Srila Prabhupada was very fond of Mr Panilal Pithi, a friend from Hyderabad. One time Mr Pithi came to Bombay and dropped in unexpectedly to visit Prabhupada. Prabhupada had just begun his lunch. He was glad to see his friend, however, and asked him to sit down and have lunch with him. Prabhupada told his cook, Palika to make up a plate for Mr Pithi. She stared back silently at Prabhupada because she had hardly an extra food for serving another person. But Prabhupada looked back steadily at her and again asked her to make the extra plate. Palika came in with a plate, as best as she could arrange, for Mr Pithi. Mr Pithi then got up to go to another room to wash his hands. But as soon as Mr Pithi left the room, Srila Prabhupada, with the demeanour of a surreptitious child, took his bowl of yoghurt from his plate and quickly put it onto Mr Pithi's plate before he could come back and see.
Prabhupada's disciple Subhaga tells of his first
meeting with Prabhupada. Prabhupada noticed him in the temple room and
asked him his name. Subhaga answered with a few words in Bengali.
"Oh, you are a Bengali?" said Prabhupada. "Come
to my room."
Subhaga followed as Srila Prabhupada entered
his room. There Prabhupada began changing his clothes. Keeping his body
always covered with cloth, he removed the dhoti while putting on his gamcha
in preparation for his massage. Prabhupada continued talking affectionately,
asking Subhaga about his life. Subhaga began to feel that he was talking
with a near and dear family relative, an affectionate, respected grandfather.
It was as if he had known Srila Prabhupada a long time, although he had
been in Prabhupada's association for only a moment. While Prabhupada's
servant knelt beside Prabhupada and began massaging his head, Prabhupada
began to explain Krsna consciousness to the newcomer.

"Demonic Habits Are Being Killed"
Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.9.47
Mayapur, April 2, 1976
Listen to the entire lecture on-line:
http://prabhupadavani.org/Bhagavatam/RAMfiles2/SB611.ram
Pusta Krsna: "...authorized Vedic knowledge one can see the cause and effect of the cosmic manifestation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because the cosmic manifestation is also His energy. Both of them are different energies of the Lord and nothing else. The wise man can see how the fire is spread within the wood by consideration of cause and effect. Similarly, persons engaged in devotional service understand, O my Lord, how You are both the cause and effect."
Prabhupada:
rupe ime sad-asati tava veda-srste
bijankurav iva na canyad arupakasya
yuktah samaksam ubhayatra vicinate tvam...
In this book it is vicinate. I think that other book, viciksate?
Pusta Krsna: Vicaksate? And in the other book it says.
Prabhupada: Yes. It doesn't make any difference.
yuktah samaksam ubhayatra vicinate tvam
yogena vahnim iva darusu nanyatah syat
[SB 7.9.47]
So yogena, this word, is very important in this verse. There are... Yogena means "by the means of," upayena, "by the means of." So as it is stated in the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna says that bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah: [Bg. 18.55] "Only by devotional service one can understand Me." So here the word yogena should not be understood otherwise. If one says that jnana-yogena, karma-yogena, hatha-yogena, dhyana-yogena... There are many yoga system. One can understand. That is the usual proverb nowadays, that "Any means, you can understand the Absolute Truth." Yata mat tata patha. "You can have your own process or yoga and you can realize God." But that is not possible. Krsna personally says, bhaktya mam abhijanati [Bg. 18.55]. In another place, bhaktya ekaya: "Only through devotional service." And practically we see there are many jnanis and dhyana-yogis, karmis. They have no clear conception of the Absolute Truth. Vague idea. Even in many other religious system they have got some conception of God, not clear idea. But in bhakti-yoga you can understand directly the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna..............continued

"Every intelligent human being is meant for becoming interested in this
transcendental science and according to the opinion of the sages, human
life is meant for learning this science only."
.
(Sufferings of Humanity, Back to Godhead, May 5, 1956)
"The real remedy lies in the act of accepting the service of the lotus
feet of the Lord. That makes one free from all cares and anxieties of life.
That makes one able to see Godhead always and everywhere."
.
(Where is Godhead?, Back to Godhead, June 20, 1956)
"The devotee does not see anything except his Godhead. Anything animate
or inanimate exhibits Godhead in the eyes of a devotee. The devotee's eyes
are annointed with the pulp of Love for Godhead and as such he sees nothing
except in relation with Godhead."
.
(Where is Godhead?, Back to Godhead, June 20, 1956)
"This is, in the real sense, a theistic cultural movement and the facility
or opportunity shall be open to every one whatsoever he may be. All the
past Acharyas accepted everyone who desires to offer his respect to God
inspired by transcendental love and devotion."
.
(Srila Prabhupada letter, February 28, 1949)
"The theistic temples all over India are actually the different centres
as are the Churches and Mosques all over the world. These sacred centres
were meant for diffusing spiritual education and by this process of spiritual
culture the disturbed mind could be trained up in concentration for higher
duties which every human must do."
.
(Srila Prabhupada letter, July 5, 1949)
"The time which one devotes in a Krsna consciousness temple cannot be
taken away. It is an asset -- a plus, not a minus. The duration of life,
so far the body is concerned, may be taken; however one tries to keep it
intact, no one can do it. But the spiritual education which we receive
in Krsna consciousness cannot be taken away by the sun. It becomes a solid
asset."
.
(Easy Journey to Other Planets, Chapter 2)
"The Srimad-Bhagavatam says that after many, many births we have attained
the human form of body. Now we should not misuse it. Please utilize this
human life to develop Krsna consciousness and be happy."
.
(Easy Journey to Other Planets, Chapter 2)
"The seed of Krsna consciousness is sown within the heart of the conditioned
soul, and when one hears instruction from the spiritual master,
the seed fructifies, and one's life is blessed."
.
(Srimad-Bhagavatam, 3.31.16, Purport)
"Krsna consciousness is already there in the core of everyone's heart.
But because of our materially conditioned life, we have forgotten it. The
process of chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra -- Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna,
Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare --
revives the Krsna consciousness we already have. For example, a few months
ago these American and European boys and girls did not know about Krsna,
but just yesterday we saw how they were chanting Hare Krsna and dancing
in ecstacy throughout the whole Ratha-yatra procession. Do you think that
was artificial? No. Artificially, nobody can chant and dance for hours.
They have actually awakened their Krsna consciousness by following a bona
fide process."

and from all illusory dualities, one becomes engaged

"There is nothing new to be said. Whatever I had to say, I have already said in my books. Now you must all try to understand it and continue with your endeavors. Whether I am present or not present doesn't matter. Just as Krsna is living eternally, the living being also lives eternally. But especially... kirtir yasya sa jivati: 'One who has done service to the Lord lives forever.' You have been taught to serve Krsna, and with Krsna we'll live eternally. Our life is eternal. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire: the disappearance of the temporary body doesn't matter. The body is meant for disappearance. So, live forever by serving Krsna. Thank you very much."
(Srila Prabhupada, Vrindavan, India, 1977)
"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras
as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

How Hindus Are Targeted With "Friendship Evangelism"
http://www.hvk.org/hvk/articles/0302/160.html
USA, June 6, 2004: This is an old article, available in full at "source," originally published in Evangelical Missions Quarterly, April, 1994. It's on the subject of "friendship evangelism," that is, the method of making friends with a prospective convert as a method of gaining access and trust sufficient to begin the actual conversion attempt. The original article has a long list of do's and do not's in dealing with Hindus. Hindus are difficult to convert, missionaries often complain and the complex psychology of this approach is one attempt to gain more success. Some excerpts:
Friendship evangelism is usually easy to initiate with Hindus. Most Hindus esteem religion in general and are free and open to speak about it. A sincere, nonjudgemental interest in all aspects of Indian Life will provide a good basis for friendship.
DO NOT:
Criticize or condemn Hinduism. There is much that is good and much that is bad in the practice of both Christianity and Hinduism. Pointing out the worst aspects of Hinduism is hardly the way to win friends or show love. It is to the credit of Hindus that they rarely retaliate against Christians by pointing out all our shameful practices and failures. Criticizing Hinduism can make us feel we have won an argument; it will not win Hindus to Jesus Christ.
Do not argue or debate on points where we must disagree with our Hindu friends. Most Hindus sit lightly to their theology or philosophy. God is above our definitions and debates, and the man of God should stand above human disagreements. Often points are raised to deflect a conversation from Christ and his compelling demands; keep a focus on him and avoid debate.
Never allow a suggestion that separation from family and/or culture is necessary in becoming a disciple of Christ. To insist or even subtly encourage a Hindu to leave his home and way of life to join the "Christian" way of life in terms of diet and culture, etc., is a denial of biblical teaching. (See 1 Cor. 7:17-24.)
Avoid all that even hints at triumphalism ("the doctrine, attitude, or belief that one religious creed is superior to all others") and pride. We are not the greatest people with the greatest religion, but some Hindus are taught that we think of ourselves in this way. We do not have all knowledge of all truth; in fact we know very little (1 Cor 8:1,2). We do not desire all India to become "Christian." (Think of what that means to a Hindu--India like America or Europe!) But we do desire all India to find peace and joy and true spirituality. Be careful in using testimonies of Hindus who have found Christ, since triumphalism is often communicated and offends Hindus. Testimonies must be given with evident humility, and with love and esteem for Hinduism.
Do not speak quickly on hell, or on the fact that Jesus is the only way for salvation. Hindus hear these things as triumphalism and are offended unnecessarily. Speak of hell only with tears of compassion. Point to Jesus so that it is obvious he is the only way, but leave the Hindu to see and conclude this for himself, rather than trying to force it on him.
Never hurry. Any pushing for a decision or conversion will do great harm. God must work, and the Holy Spirit should be given freedom to move at his own pace. Even after a profession of Christ is made, do not force quick changes regarding pictures of gods, charms, etc. Be patient and let a person come to full conviction in is own mind before taking action.
Do not force Christian ideas into passages of Hindu scripture. We must be scrupulously honest in interpreting the scriptures of all religions, and must diligently study the larger context of all quotations. There are abundant points of contact between Christian and Hindu scriptures on broad thematic issues; claiming references to Christ where none exist only hurts our credibility.
DO:
Work into your life the traditional Hindu (and biblical) values of simplicity, renunciation, spirituality, and humility, against which there is no law. A life reflecting the reality of "a still and quiet soul" (Psalm 131) will never be despised by Hindus.
Empathize with Hindus. Appreciate all that is good, and be truly sad about error and sin (as sad as you are about error and sin in Christianity). Learn to think as the Hindu thinks, and feel as he feels.
Know Hinduism, and each individual Hindu. It will take some study to get a broad grasp of Hinduism, and patient listening will be required to understand where in the spectrum each Hindu stands. Both philosophical and devotional Hinduism should be studied with the aim of understanding what appeals to the Hindu heart. Those who move seriously into Christian work among Hindus need to become more knowledgeable in Hinduism than Hindus themselves are. Some study of the Sanskrit language will prove invaluable.
Remember the biblical pattern from Acts 17 of introducing truth to the Hindu from his own tradition, and only secondarily from the Bible. For example, the biblical teaching on sin is repulsive to many modern Hindus, but their own scriptures give an abundance of similar testimony. Bridge from Hindu scripture to the Bible and Christ.
Lead in prayer and worship together with your Hindu friend. Hinduism has a grand tradition of deep spirituality, and so it is only by deeply spiritual means that we can expect to bring Hindus to the feet of Jesus Christ. Worship in spirit and truth and communion with God in prayer will open our Hindu friends to the riches of the spirituality available to the followers of Christ. This is the atmosphere most conducive to the Holy Spirit's work of bringing Hindus into discipleship to Jesus.
A Hindu who professes faith in Christ must be helped as far as possible to work out the meaning of that commitment in his own cultural context. Often a new follower of Christ is ready to adopt any and every practice of Western Christians, and needs to be taught what is essential and what is secondary in Christian life and worship. For example, it can be shown that the Eastern practice of removing shoes in a place of worship has strong biblical precedence despite the fact that shoes are worn in Western churches. A new believer should be warned against making an abrupt announcement to his or her family, since that inflicts great pain and inevitable produces deep misunderstanding. Ideally, a Hindu will share each step of the pilgrimage to Christ with his or her family, so that there is no surprise at the end. An early stage of the communication, to be reaffirmed continually, would be the honest esteem for Indian/Hindu traditions in general that the disciple of Christ can and does maintain. Approaching Hindus on these lines does not result in quick conversions and impressive statistics. But a hearing will be gained from some who have refused to listen to traditional Christian approaches. And new disciples of Christ can be taught to deal more sensitively with their contexts, allowing them to maintain an ongoing witness to their family and society. As the leaven of the gospel is allowed to work in Hindu minds and society, a harvest is sure to follow in God's own time.

Meat workers have a higher risk of developing cancer, possibly because of exposure to cancer-causing viruses carried by sheep and cattle, new research shows.
In a comparison with the general population, a group of 6647 meat workers was found to have a higher risk of developing all cancers and almost double the risk of getting lung cancer. The risk was increased when workers were exposed to biological material in animal urine, faeces or blood.
The new Massey University research, which supports previous international studies that showed an increased risk of leukaemia, lymphoma and cancers of the lung and larynx among butchers and slaughterhouse workers, has alarmed the meat union and Green MP Sue Kedgley, who say more research needs to be done to identify the cause of the cancers.
The study, by Dave McLean from the university's Centre for Public Health Research, tracked the health status of people who worked in the meat processing industry for an average of seven years between 1981 and 1998 from three plants in the North and South islands. He compared their health to that of the general population.
It found cancer mortality rates were higher than normal - 69 deaths compared to 61 expected - while lung cancer rates were almost double - 23 deaths compared to 13 expected.
Comparisons within the group showed an almost trebling effect for developing lung cancer when workers were exposed to biological material. McLean found one possible cause was workers were being exposed to tumour-causing viruses or bacteria carried by the animals.
"There has been quite a lot of previous evidence - none of it conclusive - and this study certainly adds quite a bit to it," McLean said.
McLean said one obvious limitation with the study was smoking as a form of bias. But even if meat workers smoked enough to have higher lung cancer rates than the rest of the population, it would not be "of the magnitude" shown in the research findings.
McLean said the findings were significant for public health policy making because of the high number of people employed in the meat processing industry (about 23,000 now, down from 34,000 eight years ago), but further research was needed to find the causes so they could be eliminated.
"Any occupational causes for diseases are preventable so it's an unnecessary risk if it's being caused by people's work. It would be very interesting to do further research to find out what the cause is so that it can be eliminated."
Meat Workers Union health and safety officer Maevis Watson had spoken to meat workers about the findings and indicated more research needed to be done.
"I'm not saying to them categorically that they will get lung cancer but the research indicates there are some problems and potential risks. The reasons for the increases are largely unknown and we need to find these out."
Kedgley said the government needed to take action to protect their workers by funding more research into the area. "We need to focus on how to reduce the exposure. Very little money or research is being put into reducing (cancer) risks."
The Meat Industry Association will invite McLean to present his findings at the next forum meeting on July 8.
"The health and safety of our workforce is extremely important to us. The meat industry, in partnership with ACC and other agencies, has devoted significant resources to protecting the health and wellbeing of our people, and any research that provides further insight on additional areas to focus on is welcomed."

As Oil Prices Go Up, Natural Diesel Alternatives Look
Better
http://www.goodnewsindia.com/Pages/content/discovery/svo.html
BANGALORE, INDIA, June 1, 2004: Prof. U Shrinivasa's SuTRA is demonstrating the power and simplicity of straight vegetable fuel oils, according to this report at GoodNewsIndia.
In 2001 when GoodNewsIndia reported on the work of Prof. Udipi Shrinivasa and his organization SuTRA, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, he had already proven the idea of using straight vegetable oils [SVO] as diesel engine fuels. He had demonstrated over a 40 square kilometer area that SVO can deliver power to homes and farms. How was this promise going to be taken to an India out there, we had wondered. The professor however, had no doubts: "It will happen, sir," he had said softly. He is a man who knows his India. Two years on, he is proving right.
The report describes how he sought to bring electricity to a remote village. Two off-the-shelf gensets of 7.5 kva each were installed in a hut in Chalbardi village. The hamlet was wired. Karanji oil engines powered a decorticator and an oil mill (that is, the village produced its own biodiesel). And in June, 2001, right in the middle of a forest, with no pylons, no pollution, no down-time and no bills to pay, darkness made way to light. People whooped in joy. Children raced round and round. And were delightedly, sternly told that it was time for them to sit down and spend some time learning. This self sustaining miracle cost just $10,000.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, May 24, 2004: A small study suggests yoga can help ease the sleep disruptions that often accompany cancer treatment. Researchers from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, studied 39 people who were either being treated for lymphoma or had finished their treatment in the past year. Half were assigned to take 7 weeks of Tibetan yoga classes, while the others were given no special intervention. At the end of the study, the patients who did yoga reported falling asleep faster, sleeping better and longer, and using fewer sleep medications than people in the other group. The results were reported in the journal Cancer (Vol. 100, No. 10: 2253-2260).
"Although there's not a lot out there on sleep in cancer, the few studies there are suggest that sleep is quite disrupted in cancer patients, so to improve a patient's sleep is quite a remarkable thing to have accomplished," said lead researcher Lorenzo Cohen, PhD, director of M.D. Anderson's Integrative Medicine Program. But Cohen wasn't entirely surprised by the results. The yoga may have helped patients sleep by helping them cope with the stress caused by their illness, he said. "Patients undergo a tremendous amount of stress, both from the psychological aspects of dealing with a life-threatening illness and the side effects of treatment," said Cohen. "These types of modalities that incorporate not just physical aspects, but also spiritual and mental aspects, can be useful to help manage a lot of these issues."
The stretching and poses in yoga, for instance, can help patients regain some of their physical conditioning and manage fatigue, Cohen said. The breathing and relaxation techniques can help patients deal with intrusive thoughts or fear of recurrence or death. The Tibetan type of yoga used for the study may have been especially helpful, Cohen said, because it combines all of those features: gentle exercise, focused breathing, and meditation. "All of the postures can be done sitting on a chair or on the floor," explained Cohen. "They're all very low-impact, simple movements done when a person is being mindful and working on breath control." The movements can be adapted for people with limited arm or leg mobility, he added. And unlike Hatha yoga, which is more commonly practiced in the United States, the Tibetan program used in the study included no stretching, balancing, or inverted poses that can be problematic for people with cancer.
Still, Cohen said, any yoga program that incorporates this mind-body-breathing combination is likely to benefit a cancer patient. But before starting any yoga program, patients should consult their doctor first, he said. People who are having problems with balance, for instance, may want to skip some of the yoga poses that require balancing; patients with bone metastases need to be careful of weight-bearing poses, which could pose a risk of fracture.

Joshi Rejects Criticism of Education Changes
http://www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=31787#compstory
ALLAHABAD, INDIA, May 25, 2004: Lashing out at his critics who accused him of saffronising India's education system, senior BJP leader and former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi has said he undertook revamp and modernization of education to suit national interests. "The education system had been revamped and modernized by incorporating human values, the duties of the citizens towards the nation, awareness about ecology and inclusion of the ethos of sarv dharma sambhav," he told reporters at his residence here on Monday night. Rubbishing allegations on saffronisation, Joshi said the accusations were misplaced as modernization of the national curriculum, introduction of astrology as a subject in the universities and steps taken for minority education had from time to time passed the scrutiny of the judiciary. The former minister also took a swipe at his critics for charging him with tinkering with the NCERT books, particularly history, and said "correct inputs" were incorporated in the history books so that the students got to know "the correct history of the country since the ancient times."

Dear Devotees,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Sri Panca-tattva.
We are starting a new conference called Panca-tattva Nectar on PAMHO, so devotees can share their realizations and memories of the recent festival in Mayapur.
During the course of conversations, it was realized that there are so many stories out there, so many different understandings and realizations, so many small and big incidents to share, that we should endeavor to record them all and share them amongst everyone who wants to hear.
Last night, in the Deity Sewing Room upstairs from Sri Panca-tattva's altar, HG Jananivas prabhu was talking with Ramadevi mataji, the Deities' seamstress, along with Lilasamayi devi (from Italy) and Jalangi devi (from China), and myself, and there were endless stories, just between the four of us. We realized that these stories should be shared. Ramadevi suggested a conference, and Jananivas prabhu said it was a wonderful idea, so this is what we are now doing.
Please share the news with others in your zone who have returned from Mayapur, and those who did not come to Mayapur but who want to share the nectar. So many things have happened in the lives of so many devotees since the arrival of Sri Panca-tattva. It is obvious that we are entering a new phase in ISKCON, and these stories are an encouragement and an inspiration to everyone. Please write in to the conference and share the mercy...

CORNY FRENCH TOAST by Nancy Berkoff
(Makes 3 slices)
Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons silken tofu (30 ml)
1/4 cup vanilla soy or rice milk (60 ml)
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (1 ml)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (2 ml)
1 cup cornflakes (239 ml)
3 slices whole wheat or raisin bread
vegetable oil spray
In a bowl, combine tofu, milk, nutmeg, and cinnamon until smooth.
Crumble cornflakes (you're not looking for cornflake flour; crumble
until each flake is broken in two or three pieces.) Spread flakes on a
dinner plate.
Dip bread in the tofu mixture until both sides are coated. Place each slice of bread (both sides) into the cornflakes. Press down slightly so they stick. Spray frying pan with vegetable oil and fry bread until each side is golden brown. Serve with sliced bananas, fruit preserves, or syrup.
Note: If you don't have vanilla flavored soy or rice milk, use plain, and add a half teaspoon of vanilla extract and a quarter teaspoon sweetener. Also, if you're not a fan of frying (or you want to have breakfast cooking while you do other things), you can bake this recipe. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, while you prepare the bread. Spray a baking sheet with vegetable oil and place the prepared bread on it. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden and puffy.

1 teaspoon lemon zest (5ml)
1 cup silken tofu (239 ml)
In a large pot, simmer carrots, carrot juice, vegan margarine, concentrate, and curry powder until almost all the liquid has evaporated, approximately 45 minutes.
In a blender or food processor, puree cooked carrots, carrot juice, lemon zest, and tofu and process until very smooth. Refrigerate soup for at least 2 hours or freeze until ready to eat.

1 - 15oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2T. soy mayonnaise or pureed silken tofu

Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always
with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

SB 5.12.2 : Maharaja Rahugana to Jada Bharata
O best of teachers, my body is filled with dirty things, and
my vision has been bitten by the serpent of pride. Due to my material conceptions,
I am diseased. Your nectarean instructions are the proper medicine for
one suffering from such a fever, and they are cooling waters for one scorched
by the heat.
PURPORT by His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
The conditioned soul has a body full of dirty things - bones, blood,
urine, stool and so forth. Nonetheless, the most intelligent men in this
material world think they are these combinations of blood, bone, urine
and stool. If this is so, why can't other intelligent men be made with
these ingredients, which are so readily available? The entire world is
going on under the bodily conception and creating a hellish condition unfit
for any gentleman's living. The instructions given to King Rahugana by
Jada Bharata are very valuable. They are like the medicine that can save
one from a snakebite. The Vedic instructions are like nectar and cool water
for one suffering from scorching heat.
Your most puffed up snakebitten servant,
Ekendra das

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, "Genesis 310."
Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter.
Revelation 320 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 310 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked."
A Catholic priest, a Protestant reverend and a rabbi were sitting together on a jet.
They were discussing how they separate their own money from what they give to God.
The Priest said, "I give G-d whatever He wants. I stand in a circle, put all my money in a hat, throw it up and what God wants lands in the circle.”
The Reverend said, " I give God whatever He wants. I put all my
money in a hat, throw it up and what lands back in the hat God wants."
The Rabbi said, " I give God whatever He wants. I put all my
money in a hat, throw it up and whatever God wants he takes.”

GOVINDA BHOG!
This story is called Phuraphai govindaya namah. Phuraphai means
"puffed rice." Once there was a man who was carrying grains, puffed
rice, on his head. He encountered a big gust of wind that carried
away all of his grains, and then the man exclaimed, "Govinda Bhog!" (An
offering unto Govinda). Because the grains had been taken away by
God, he considered it as his share of devotional service that he had given
something to him.

The following instructions appeared on the hot-air hand dryer in a

(3) Rub hands briskly under nozzle
(4) Dryer stops automatically
Underneath this someone had scratched in
(5) Wipe hands on pants
In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes.
When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed
firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "Goodnight, sleep tight".

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that, for a
month
after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with
all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their
calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month we
know
today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England,
when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them mind their
own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into

used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase
inspired by this practice.

Customer: "Hi, I'd like to order... "
Operator: "May I have your NIDN first, sir?"
Customer: "My National ID Number, yeah, hold on, eh, it's 6102049998-45-54610."
Operator: "Thank you, Mr. Sheehan. I see you live at 1742 Meadowland Drive, and the phone number's 494-2366. Your office number over at Lincoln Insurance is 745-2302 and your cell number's 266-2566. Which number are you calling from, sir?"
Customer: "Huh? I'm at home. Where d'ya get all this information?"
Operator: "We're wired into the system, sir."
Customer: (Sighs) "Oh, well, I'd like to order a couple of your All-Meat Special pizzas..."
Operator: "I don't think that's a good idea, sir."
Customer: "Whaddya mean?"
Operator: "Sir, your medical records indicate that you've got very high blood pressure and extremely high cholesterol. Your National Health Care provider won't allow such an unhealthy choice."
Customer: "Damn. What do you recommend, then?"
Operator: "You might try our low-fat Soybean Yogurt Pizza. I'm sure you'll like it"
Customer: "What makes you think I'd like something like that?"
Operator: "Well, you checked out 'Gourmet Soybean Recipes' from your local library last week, sir. That's why I made the suggestion."
Customer: "All right, all right. Give me two family-sized ones, then. What's the damage?"
Operator: "That should be plenty for you, your wife and your four kids, sir. The 'damage,' as you put it, heh, heh, comes $49.99."
Customer: "Lemme give you my credit card number."
Operator: "I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid you'll have to pay in cash. Your credit card balance is over its limit."
Customer: "I'll run over to the ATM and get some cash before your driver gets here."
Operator: "That won't work either, sir. Your checking account's overdrawn."
Customer: "Never mind. Just send the pizzas. I'll have the cash ready. How long will it take?"
Operator: "We're running a little behind, sir. It'll be about 45 minutes, sir. If you're in a hurry you might want to pick 'em up while you're out getting the cash, but carrying pizzas on a motorcycle can be a little awkward."
Customer: "How the hell do you know I'm riding a bike?"
Operator: "It says here you're in arrears on your car payments, so your car got repo'ed. But your Harley's paid up, so I just assumed that you'd be using it."
Customer: "@#%/$@&?#!"
Operator: "I'd advise watching your language, sir. You've already got a July 2006 conviction for cussing out a cop."
Customer: (Speechless)
Operator: "Will there be anything else, sir?"
Customer: "No, nothing. oh, yeah, don't forget the two free liters of Coke your ad says I get with the pizzas."
Operator: "I'm sorry sir, but our ad's exclusionary clause prevents us from offering free soda to diabetics.
