"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other’s welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."(Srimad Bhagavatam 5:18:9.)

Festivals Coming Soon

Snan yatra & Rathayatra in Auckland

Sunday 27th from 10.30am will be our CHILDREN'S RATHAYATRA.  We will
have a beautiful miniature Chariot for the younger members to pull around
the temple, carrying Lord Jagannatha in style.  And then the Sunday
programme will be our annual SNANA YATRA FESTIVAL - the bathing festival of
Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva and Lady Subhadra.  This is always one of the
most popular programmes of the year - when devotees have the opportunity to
touch and bathe the large altar deities of Lord Jagannatha.  Traditionally
this is always done before the Rathayatra festival. It is said that the Lord
catches a chill from the bathing and likes to rest, retiring from the altar
until the day of the Chariot Parade.  On that Sunday you will see Him appear
with His ELEPHANT MASK and devotees will offer many sweets, cakes and sugary
buns for His pleasure.  (Initiated devotees are all requested to bake some
sweet preparations for the Lord).

December 3rd.  Saturday.  RATHA YATRA.
Every year the huge Chariot is taken from the temple into Queen
Street at this time and hundreds of devotees and friends pull it all the way
from Downtown to Aotea Square.  All traffic stops while the Lords
Jagannatha, Baladeva and Lady Subhadra ride majestically through Their City,
accompanied by kirtan, dancing and prasadam distribution along the way.  We
will notify you nearer the date of the meeting place and time.

Keep this day free.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                                 TEXT 13

                          sarva-karmani manasa
                        sannyasyaste sukham vasi
                          nava-dvare pure dehi
                         naiva kurvan na karayan

   WORD FOR WORD

   sarva--all; karmani--activities; manasa--by the mind;
   sannyasya--giving up; aste--remains; sukham--in happiness;
vasi--one who is controlled; nava-dvare--in the place where there
   are nine gates; pure--in the city; dehi--the embodied soul;
   na--never; eva--certainly; kurvan--doing anything; na--not;
   karayan--causing to be done.

  TRANSLATION

When the embodied living being controls his nature and mentally
renounces all actions, he resides happily in the city of nine gates
[the material body], neither working nor causing work to be done.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

The embodied soul lives in the city of nine gates. The activities
of the body, or the figurative city of body, are conducted
automatically by its particular modes of nature. The soul, although
subjecting himself to the conditions of the body, can be beyond
those conditions, if he so desires. Owing only to forgetfulness of
his superior nature, he identifies with the material body, and
therefore suffers. By Krsna consciousness, he can revive his real
position and thus come out of his embodiment. Therefore, when one
takes to Krsna consciousness, one at once becomes completely aloof
from bodily activities. In such a controlled life, in which his
deliberations are changed, he lives happily within the city of nine
gates. The nine gates are mentioned as follows:

                          nava-dvare pure dehi
                          hamso lelayate bahih
                          vasi sarvasya lokasya
                         sthavarasya carasya ca

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is living within the body
of a living entity, is the controller of all living entities all
over the universe. The body consists of nine gates [two eyes, two
nostrils, two ears, one mouth, the anus and the genitals]. The
living entity in his conditioned stage identifies himself with the
body, but when he identifies himself with the Lord within himself,
he becomes just as free as the Lord, even while in the body."
   (Svetasvatara Upanisad 3.18)

Therefore, a Krsna conscious person is free from both the outer and
inner activities of the material body.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

Prabhupada's Humility and The Force of His Preaching

Just before the start of the Ratha-yatra parade, Srila Prabhupada was driven right up to where the carts were poised to roll. Right in the middle of the filthy, filthy street, Chicago's big State Street, he got down and paid his obeisances to Lord Jagannatha. What humility! Since then I have never hesitated to pay obeisances if the occasion called no matter how dirty the street. Again, example is better than precept.

-- Suresvara dasa

In 1976 in Delhi, Prabhupada was doing a pandal, and he stayed in the home of a rich Indian gentleman. They called a big press conference, and many Westernized, so-called hip young Indian reporters were there, both men and women. They had come to see the sadhu. They asked many questions.

Prabhupada spoke so forcefully, he shook their hearts. He shattered their hearts by his speaking. Although they came in trying to be sophisticated young Indians, Prabhupada shattered their hearts by his preaching. They became frightened. They gave up all their sophistication and simply began to treat him with great reverence, like the sadhu or spiritual master. Even in their fallen condition, when Prabhupada began speaking so forcefully, they became very frightened of continuing with their sophisticated attitude. They became very humble and submissive and simply began to treat him as a spiritual master. Prabhupada was so powerful that any cultured person, anyone who was a little pious immediately became fearful of acting impiously or in an arrogant way in his presence.

-- Hrdayananda Goswami

My story is from Chicago in 1975. I had been with the library party for about a year and we had been traveling nonstop doing book distribution in colleges and libraries. In July of 1975, Prabhupada was in Chicago and we had the opportunity to have his darsana. My friend, Apurva, was cooking for Prabhupada. He asked if I could cook a preparation for Prabhupada. I was very eager to volunteer. I made sandesa for Prabhupada. Then they put that on Prabhupada's plate, and I got to take in the plate. I'm sure he didn't recognize me. I was just a brahmacari coming in, offering him prasadam. Prabhupada ate some of the sandesa. Like every cook, the next day I asked Apurva if Prabhupada made any comments. Apurva said, "Yes, Prabhupada said, 'Why are so many men staying back from book distribution to cook for me?'" From this I realized that my relationship with Prabhupada was not based on serving his vapuh form, but on distributing his books.

-- Kalakantha dasa

I had the realization that Krsna is spreading Krsna consciousness all over the world just to glorify Srila Prabhupada. We are doing so little actually, but by Krsna's grace, that little effort is producing such big results. Why? My realization is that it is only because Krsna wants to glorify Srila Prabhupada, His pure devotee. He is making everything so wonderful and so successful. Krsna is even making us wonderful, us mlecchas and yavanas, just to glorify Srila Prabhupada.

And why is Krsna acting only to glorify Srila Prabhupada? Because Srila Prabhupada had no desire other than to glorify Krsna. Reciprocally, at least in terms of the Krsna consciousness movement in this material world (earth), Krsna has no desire other than to glorify Srila Prabhupada -- and why? -- because Srila Prabhupada had no desire other than to glorify Sri Krsna."

-- Giriraja Swami, letter to Satsvarupa dasa Goswami, August 20, 1985

Suresvara dasa, interview; Hrdayananda Goswami, interview; Kalakantha dasa, interview; Giriraja Swami, letter to Satsvarupa dasa Goswami. The "Realizations" entries in Prabhupada Nectar have met with good response from our readers. We like to hear about Prabhupada from the different angles of vision of his many disciples. Another way to appreciate "Realizations" is to understand that no one devotee can see the total extent of Prabhupada in all his moods and with all his instructions. It takes the combined realizations of all the devotees to approach the "complete Prabhupada" -- and even then we can know only a little bit. When an individual devotee tells his realization, we can understand that he is telling as much about himself as he is about Prabhupada. That is not a reason to reject such realizations. The seed of devotional service planted within the heart of an individual disciple is also an expanded form of Prabhupada, and all Prabhupadanugas like to hear expressions of genuine love and realization from those who carry Prabhupada in their hearts. A similar example is given in Caitanya-caritamrta. Lord Caitanya became ecstatic on seeing a brahmana who showed symptoms of love of God. He surmised that this brahmana must have contacted Madhavendra Puri in order to show such symptoms of love of God. Therefore, Lord Caitanya loved the associate of the great Madhavendra Puri. Similarly, we want to hear from and honor every genuine devotee of Prabhupada, and we want to experience Prabhupada coming through such living representatives.

Prabhupada: No, no, spirit you see or don't see, that is dif...

Umapati: He studies matter.

Prabhupada: No, that's all right.

Svarupa Damodara: No, once they see the spirit soul, they can detect somehow, then they are definitely convinced.

Prabhupada: So how you can see? It is... The measurement is given, 1/10,000th part of the tip of the hair. So where is your seeing power?

Svarupa Damodara: Still they want to sense it by some...

Prabhupada: Sense, that is... Any rascal can sense that here is living energy. That is spirit soul. Just like if you inject one grain of poison and immediately he dies, does it require how he dies? That one, not one grain. Even one hundredth part of one grain, venomous poison, how it acts? So even nobody can see it, when the snake bites, nobody can see where is that... How he dies?

Svarupa Damodara: They will explain that by..., it blocks some of the metabolic paths...

Prabhupada: That's all right, but it is acting. That is my point. You can explain in your nonsense way, this, so many things. But I see that because that very little portion of poison is there, immediately he dies. Why don't you see the action?

Karandhara: But they say the soul is subject to material conditions. They are seeing the body as the soul; so they say because it is subject to material conditions, therefore it's not eternal.

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

So because these activities, devotional activities, are on the spiritual platform, all of them are Absolute. It is not that if you are hearing but you are not chanting, then your result will be little less than the other who is hearing and chanting. No. It is Absolute Truth.

Bhakti is Superior to Karma and Jïäna

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.39

sva-sukha-nibhåta-cetäs tad-vyudastänya-bhävo
'py ajita-rucira-léläkåñöa-säras tadéyam
vyatanuta kåpayä yas tattva-dépaà puräëaà
tam akhila-våjina-ghnaà vyäsa-sünuà nato 'smi

Let me offer my respectful obeisance's unto my spiritual master, the son of Vyäsadeva, Çukadeva Gosvämé. It is he who defeats all inauspicious things within this universe. Although in the beginning he was absorbed in the happiness of Brahman realization and was living in a secluded place, giving up all other types of consciousness, he became attracted by the most melodious pastimes of Lord Kåñëa. He therefore mercifully spoke the supreme Puräëa, Çrémad Bhägavatam, which is the bright light of the Absolute Truth and which describes the activities of Lord Kåñëa. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 12.12.69)

The Eightfold Yoga System Does not Lead to the Highest Goal

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.40

yamädibhir yoga-pathaiù käma-lobha-hato muhuù
mukunda-sevayä yadvat tathätmäddhä na çämyati

By yoga practice one may be able to control the senses and become relatively free from lust and greed, but this will never satisfy the soul. Only devotional service to Kåñëa gives complete satisfaction to the soul. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 1.6.35)

Mind Control Through Präëäyäma is Impossible

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.41

yuïjänänäm abhaktänäà präëäyämädibhir manaù
akñéëa-väsanaà räjan dåçyate punar utthitam

Nondevotees who attempt to control the mind through präëäyäma may succeed for a time, but ultimately their minds are filled with subtle desires, therefore, they soon become attached once again to the sense objects. (Srimad Bhägavatam.. 10.51.60)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.42

präyaçaù puëòarékäkña yuïjanto yogino manaù
viñédanty asamädhänän mano-nigraha-karçitäù

O lotus-eyed Lord, those yogés who try to control their minds are frustrated in their attempts to attain samädhé, and soon tire of their efforts at mind control. (Srimad Bhägavatam.. 11.29.2)

Yoga and Präëäyäma are a Waste of Time

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.43

antaräyän vadanty etä yuïjato yogam uttamam
mayä sampadyamänasya käla-kñapaëa-hetavaù

The wise have concluded that yoga and its mystic perfection's are impediments on the path of the Absolute Truth. They are a waste of time for those who wish to practice the best yoga, devotional service, and thus attain the highest perfection [love of Godhead]. (Srimad Bhägavatam.. 11.15.33)

Who is a Real Yogé and Sannyäsé?

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.44

anäçritaù karma-phalaà käryaà karma karoti yaù
sa sannyäsé ca yogé ca na niragnir na cäkriyaù

One who is unattached to the fruits of his work yet does his duty is a true sannyäsé and a yogé, not he who lights no fire of sacrifice or performs no work. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.1)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.45

niskäma haiyäkare ye kåñëa-bhajana
tähäre se bali "yogé" sannyäsa-lakñaëa
viñëu-kriyä nä karile paränna khäile
kicchu nahe, säkñätei ei vede bale

One who worships Kåñëa without material desires is a real yogé and has symptoms of sannyäsé. Those who do not work for Viñëu but eat from others are parasites. That is the version of the Vedas. (Chaitanya bhagavat. Antya 3.41-42)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.46

tapasvibhyo 'dhiko yogé jïänibhyo 'pi mato 'dhikaù
karmibhyaç cädhiko yogé tasmäd yogé bhavärjuna

A yogé is greater than a ascetic, a jïäni, or a karmi. Therefore, O Arjuna, always be a yogé. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.46)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.47

yoginäm api sarveñäà mad-gatenäntar-ätmanä
çraddhävän bhajate yo mäà sa me yuktatamo mataù

Of all yogés, who always abides in Me with great faith, always thinking of Me and worshiping Me in transcendental loving service, is most intimately united with Me in yoga. He is the highest of all. (Bhagavad-gétä 6.47)

Without Bhakti There is no Means to Attain the Supreme

From Gaudiya Kantahara  12.48

na sädhayati mäà yogo na säokhyaà dharma uddhava
na svädhyäyas tapas tyägo yathä bhaktir mamorjitä

I am not controlled by those who practice mystic yoga, Säokhya philosophy, mundane piety and religion, study of the Vedas, penances and renunciation. O Uddhava, I am controlled by bhakti. Those who have developed unalloyed devotion for Me control Me by their love. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 11.14.20)

Although being assured of his father's treasure, the poor man could not acquire this treasure by such knowledge alone. The astrologer had to tell him, therefore, the means whereby he could actually find the treasure. The astrologer said, "The treasure is in this place, but if you dig on the southern side, the wasps and drones will rise, and you will not get your treasure. If you dig on the western side, a ghost will create such a disturbance that your hands will not even touch the treasure. If you dig on the northern side, a big black snake will devour you. If, however, you dig up a small quantity of dirt on the eastern side, you will immediately touch the pot of treasure. Revealed scriptures conclude that one should give up fruitive activity, speculative knowledge, and the mystic yoga system. Instead one should take to devotional service, by which Kåñëa can be fully satisfied. The conclusion is that devotional service is the only means to approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This system is therefore called abhidheya. This is the verdict of all revealed scriptures. When one is actually rich he naturally enjoys all kinds of happiness. When one is actually in a happy mood, all distressful conditions go away by themselves. No extraneous endeavor is needed. Similarly, as a result of bhakti, one's dormant love for Kåñëa awakens. Then one can taste the association of Lord Kåñëa. And material existence, the repetition of birth and death, comes to an end. The goal of love of Godhead is not to become materially rich or free from material bondage. The real goal is to be situated in devotional service to the Lord and to enjoy transcendental bliss. (Chaitanya charitamritam. Madhya 20.131-136, 139-142)

The Goal of Bhakti and the Goal of Karma
and Jïäna are not the Same

From Gaudiya Kantahara12.50

teñäà satata-yuktänäà bhajatäà préti-pürvakam
dadämi buddhi-yogaà taà yena mäm upayänti te

To those who are constantly devoted, serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. (Bhagavad-gétä 10.10)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.51

yogasya tapasaç caiva nyäsasya gatayo 'maläù
mahar janas tapaù satyaà bhakti-yogasya mad-gatiù

Those who practice mystic yoga, who perform great austerities and accept sannyäsa, may attain the sinless realms of Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapaloka, and Satyaloka, but those who practice bhakti-yoga, devotional service unto Me, attain My abode. (Srimad Bhägavatam. 11.24.14)

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.52

yänti deva-vratä devän pitèn yänti pitå-vratäù
bhütäni yänti bhütejyä yänti mad-yäjino 'pi mäm

Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits take birth among such beings, and those who worship Me will live with Me. (Bhagavad-gétä 9.25)

From Gaudiya Kantahara  12.53

'mukti, bhukti väïche yei, kähän duohära gati?'
'sthävara-deha, deva-deha yaiche avasthiti'

"And what is the destination of those who desire liberation and those who desire sense gratification?" Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu asked. Rämänanda Räya replied, "Those who attempt to merge into the existence of the Supreme Lord will have to accept a body like that of a tree. And those who are overly inclined toward sense gratification will attain the bodies of demigods.'' (Chaitanya charitamritam. Madhya 8.257)

The Character of Bhakti

From Gaudiya Kantahara 12.54

mac-cittä mad-gata-präëä bodhayantaù parasparam
kathayantaç ca mäà nityaà tuñyanti ca ramanti ca
The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing, about Me. (Bhagavad-gétä l0.9)

Thus ends the Twelfth Jewel of the Gauòéya Kaëöhahära, entitled Abhidheya-tattva.

"Until men are educated to see the soul within the body, the dual frenzy of love and hate would continue, and a humane world would not be possible."

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Dear Friends,

Hare Krsna!

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Meditation changes brain thickness
http://www.livescience.com/humanbiology/051111_medidate.html
LiveScience.com Fri Nov 11,12:00 PM ET

Meditation alters brain patterns in ways that are likely permanent, scientists have known. But a new study shows key parts of the brain actually get thicker through the practice.

Brain imaging of regular working folks who meditate regularly revealed increased thickness in cortical regions related to sensory, auditory and visual perception, as well as internal perception -- the automatic monitoring of heart rate or breathing, for example.

The study also indicates that regular meditation may slow age-related thinning of the frontal cortex.

"What is most fascinating to me is the suggestion that meditation practice can change anyone's gray matter," said study team member Jeremy Gray, an assistant professor of psychology at Yale. "The study participants were people with jobs and families. They just meditated on average 40 minutes each day, you don't have to be a monk."

The research was led by Sara Lazar, assistant in psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital. It is detailed in the November issue of the journal NeuroReport.

The study involved a small number of people, just 20. All had extensive training in Buddhist Insight meditation. But the researchers say the results are significant.

Most of the brain regions identified to be changed through meditation were found in the right hemisphere, which is essential for sustaining attention. And attention is the focus of the meditation.

Other forms of yoga and meditation likely have a similar impact on brain structure, the researchers speculate, but each tradition probably has a slightly different pattern of cortical thickening based on the specific mental exercises involved.

Dear Devotees
Pamho agtSP

I am a soldier in the US Army and thought you all might get a laugh at what happened the other day.

We had to do a 6 mile run for fitness. Its customary to sing during these runs to build soldier cohesion. So they asked me to sing. I agreed so we were running down the street, when the idea popped in my head to get them to chant. Now this wasn't 6 or 7 people, its was a total of 600 soldiers. And they were into it, for 3 miles they chanted the Maha Mantra as loud as they could and were really into it.

Amazing what the power of the Holy Name can do.

Russian Krishna Followers on Hunger Strike

Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 18:22:25 -0000
   From: "vrnparker" <vrnparker@yahoo.com>
Subject: Russian Krishna Followers on Hunger Strike

Krishna Followers Go on Hunger Strike against Expulsion The conflict related to construction of Krishna Followers Temple gained momentum Saturday. Moscow authorities voiced intention to take out the allotment allocated for building the Vedic Culture Temple, Krishna followers responded by a hunger strike.

More than 500 people went on a long-term hunger strike Saturday, November 12, 2005, said Sergey Andreev, leader of the Moscow community of Krishna followers, in a move to preserve the allotment allocated in Moscow for the temple construction.

As a religious organization, Hare Krishna was officially acknowledged in Russia in 1988. Now the country has 106 registered communities of Krishna followers and over 300 parishes.

Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov sealed the ruling on constructing cultural premises for Krishna followers in Moscow in January 2004. The document sanctioned construction of the Vedic Center on the area of 1.05 hectares at 39 Leningrad Ave. to replace the two-store building demolished in Khoroshevkoe Avenue. To oppose construction, the orthodox followers staged a protest rally and vowed "to lie under bulldozers at the constriction site, "as this premise will desecrate Moscow," they said.

As a result, Luzhkov called off his ruling on October 7. "We think the authorities may proceed with decisive actions to expel Indian and Moscow Vaishnavs from habitable land, in which they have invested a lot," Andreev said. "We are truly concerned. We may be on the street deprived of even a temporarily temple." by  www.kommersant.com

Harrods apology over Hindu bikinis
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3790315.stm

By Rajesh Priyadarshi
BBC Hindi online

London's Harrods department store has apologised to its customers for selling controversial underwear bearing images of Hindu goddesses.

Harrods removed the underwear and swimwear range from sale after a protest by a Hindu pressure group.

Hindu Human Rights said the garments, created by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, insulted the religion.

The store said: "We apologise to those customers who have been offended or distressed by the situation."

Signatures

Hindu Human Rights, a group which says it "safeguards the religion and its followers", lodged a complaint with the store on Monday seeking the removal of the range.

When we see any image of goddesses we bow our heads with respect and here they were displayed in such an insulting way

Amitabh Soni,
human resources executive

"When we heard that Harrods was selling such garments, we registered our protest. We cannot bear the insult to our religion," said spokesperson Sheila Church.

"Our goddesses are revered by millions of Hindus. How can somebody use them for such purposes? We sent Harrods a large number of signatures protesting against it."

The summer range has been on sale for some time but the controversy started on Sunday when an Indian human resources executive, Amitabh Soni, saw mannequins bearing the brightly coloured bikinis.

"I was shocked to see them," he told BBC Hindi Online.

"When we see any image of goddesses we bow our heads with respect and here they were displayed in such an insulting way", Mr Soni said.

He is now happy at the outcome, but said the store had not listened when he asked it to remove the garments.

"So I got in touch with Hindu Human Rights," he said.

Controversies relating to Hindu icons are not new.

Hindu Human Rights is also protesting against the new film by Ismail Merchant, Shakti, in which rock singer Tina Turner plays the role of goddess Kali.

Last year another department store had to apologise for selling toilet seats with images of a Hindu deity.

Selling slippers with Hindu symbols created trouble for a third London-based retailer.

A number of designers have been attracted by the richness of Hindu iconography and the fad for exotic ethnic patterns.

Israel agrees not to convert 'lost tribe' in India
Jonathan Saul
http://in.news.yahoo.com/051109/137/60ynz.html

November 9, 2005 - JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has bowed to complaints from the Indian government and stopped trying to convert to Judaism thousands of people in India who believe they are a Biblical lost tribe, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Around 7,000 people in northeast India claim they are members of Bnei Menashe, or the children of Menashe, one of the 10 "lost tribes" of Israel.

Efforts to convert them by a specially despatched team of rabbis were called off after India, a major buyer of Israeli defence exports, voiced its displeasure.

Israel's Chief Rabbinate had given the green light to convert Bnei Menashe in India.

"The Indian authorities, through official channels, told us they do not view positively initiated efforts at conversions to other religions," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said.

"When the Indian government issues a complaint we take it seriously. At the moment there is a freeze on all such conversions taking place," Regev said.

Some 800 members of Bnei Menashe have immigrated to Israel since the late 1980s and many live in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Some members of the community were among the settlers evacuated from Gaza in an Israeli pullout completed in September.

An Israeli official, who asked not to be identified, said any Bnei Menashe members who choose to immigrate to Israel would be converted to Judaism after their arrival.

Exiled by the Assyrians around 720 BC, the tribe wandered through Afghanistan and China before ending up in a part of India nestled between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Decades after being converted to Christianity by missionaries, descendants in various areas began to reconnect with Judaism in the 1970s.

While much of their Jewish traditions had been lost on the way, Bnei Menashe still practised customs which were Jewish in origin. These included sanctifying a baby on the eighth day after birth, the time when Jewish males are circumcised.

UK Postal Service Backs Off Over Stamp Insulting To Hindus

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4420896.stm

LONDON, ENGLAND, November 9, 2005: A Christmas stamp which many Hindus said was "disrespectful" to their religion has been partially withdrawn (see illustration at "source.") The Royal Mail has agreed not to replace the 68 pence stamp, which depicts a Hindu couple worshipping the baby Jesus, when current stocks run out. And the stamp, one of six depicting images of Madonna and child, will be given only to those who ask for it. The Hindu Forum said it was pleased "to a certain degree," but the stamp's sale should have been stopped completely. The group's secretary general Ramesh Kallidai said: "At least they have made some changes in the way the stamp is being sold, but of course we would have been more pleased if they had stopped the sale in its entirety." The forum had said the stamp was the equivalent of having a vicar in a dog collar kneeling down to the Hindu deity Lord Ram on a festival stamp. A Royal Mail spokesman apologised for any offence caused. "We apply a rigorous research process to all our stamp development and in this instance we sought and acted on the advice we were given. "With hindsight we now recognise that we should have consulted further and we are currently reviewing processes to improve and reinforce them." The move represents something of a climbdown as the Royal Mail refused to withdraw the stamp amid protests last week. The image on the stamp, taken from a 17th Century painting, features a man with a "tilak" marking on his forehead, identifying him as a Vaishnava Hindu. The woman in the picture has the traditional "kumkum" mark on her forehead identifying her as a married Hindu woman. The original painting hangs in a gallery in Mumbai (Bombay) in India.

Gujarat's gau raksha gets apex court nod

Pioneer News Service / New Delhi

In a landmark judgement overruling three previous verdicts, the Supreme Court on Wednesday put a stamp of approval on the decade-old order of the Gujarat Government banning the slaughter of bulls and bullocks in the State.

A seven-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice RC Lahoti set aside the judgement of the 1998 Gujarat High Court. While terming the order as unconstitutional, the High Court had held that the Government order imposed unreasonable restrictions on the fundamental rights of some petitioners who were involved in the trade.

The apex court on Wednesday upheld the constitutional validity of the Gujarat Government order in a six-to-one ratio. Earlier, the matter, which was heard by a five-judge bench, was referred to a seven-judge bench for the interpretation of provisions of the Constitution, especially with regard to status of directive principles viz-a-viz fundamental rights.

Terming the Supreme Court as significant, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said it would have an impact on national life. He said the Constitution provides for cow protection. Mahatma Gandhi also used to advocate it. "But unfortunately it (ban on cow slaughter) was not done due to vote bank politics.

The Gujarat Goverment had banned it and we are victorious today," the Chief Minister said.

He said the verdict was "very significant" for those who love the cow and believe in non-violence and "it would have a major impact on our national life."

The VHP also termed the apex court verdict as "heartening" for Hindus throughout the world. "Cow and its progeny are the backbone of our economic, social and religious development," Parishad senior vice-president Acharya Giriraj Kishore said. He demanded that the Centre and State Governments immediately ban cow slaughter as provided in the Constitution.

The BJP also welcomed the Supreme Court order and said with the apex Court's verdict it would be legal wherever such prohibition was in force.

"Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave had made efforts in this direction. Article 58 of the Constitution had this intention (ban) in mind. We welcome the verdict," party general secretary and spokesman Arun Jaitley told reporters here. He also said since a constitution bench had taken this decision, such laws in existence in other states or to be enacted by others would be legal.

SC upholds ban on cow slaughter - Victory to Dharma

Supreme Court upholds ban on cow slaughter
***********************
October 26, 2005

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the 1994 Gujarat government order banning slaughter of bulls and bullocks over the age of 16 years.

A seven-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice R C Lahoti set aside the judgement of the 1998 Gujarat High Court which termed it as unconstitutional.

SC upholds one-year sentence for cow slaughter

The High Court had held that the government order imposed unreasonable restrictions on the Fundamental Rights of some petitioners who were involved in the trade.

The apex court upheld the constitutional validity of the Gujarat government order in a six to one verdict.

The matter, which was heard by a five-judge bench earlier, had been referred to a seven-judge bench for the interpretation of provisions of the constitution, specially with regard to status of directive principles viz a viz Fundamental Rights as well as the effect of introduction of article 31(C) and 51(A).

Meanwhile Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi termed the SC verdict as significant and said it would have an "impact on national life".

"Our Constitution provides for cow protection. Mahatma Gandhi also used to advocate it. But unfortunately it (ban on cow slaughter) was not done due to vote bank politics. The Gujarat Goverment had banned it and we are victorious today," Modi said.

He said the verdict was very significant for those who love the cow and believe in non-violence and it would have a major impact on our national life.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad also termed the apex court verdict as heartening for Hindus throughout the world.

"Cow and its progeny are the backbone of our economic, social and religious development," Parishad senior Vice-President Acharya Giriraj Kishore said.

He demanded that the centre and state governments immediately ban cow slaughter "as provided in the Constitution and as desired by the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi."

Vegetarians Have a Right to Know Whether Food is Vegetarian or Not

Hindustan Times

MUMBAI, INDIA, October 5, 2005: Vegetarians only want to be informed about the ingredients in foods so that they can make a choice about what they eat. Sounds simple but as the news release explains it can be rather daunting at times, "Unless you carefully read the fine print, you could be eating eggs, animal fat and insect dye with your foreign chocolates, jelly, instant noodles, bread, ice cream and even vitamins. Most foreign chocolates like Toblerone and Mars contain egg white. Britannia cakes and some Casatta cakes have eggs, so do Oreo cookies.

Kraft and other international cheeses contain rennet -- made from the inner lining of the stomach of a young cow. And most jelly powders have gelatin -- which in many cases is made from the boiled skin, bone and tendons of pig, cow and fish. Even sweets, especially those lined with silver foil, contain ox gut obtained from slaughterhouses."

Nutritionist Naini Setalvad adds, "My vegetarian clients are increasingly wary of what they eat because it could contain something non-vegetarian. Even vitamin supplements, Vitamin D3 for example, has cholecalciferol,
which is generated in the skin of animals. Several pharmaceutical products contain Vitamin D3."

In India, food companies are required by law to label their items as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, that includes even chocolates and chewing gum. As demand increases for vegetarian products, the article point out that some companies like Amul in India and Baskin Robbins internationally are advocating their 100% vegetarian products. Pankaj Chaturvedi, CEO of Baskin Robbins, says, "When we entered the Indian market 13 years ago, some of our imported ice creams contained bone marrow. But five years ago, we turned completely vegetarian and are now positioning this as our USP."

"Our English schools are flourishing wonderfully; we find it difficult to provide instruction to all. The effect of this education on Hindus is prodigious. No Hindu who has received an English education ever remains sincerely attached to his religion. It is my firm belief that if our plans of education are followed up, there will not be a single idolater among the respected classes 30 years hence. And this will be effected without our efforts to proselytize; I heartily rejoice in the prospect"

Lord Macaulay

- from a letter to his father dated Oct. 12th, 1836

Ancient World was a Vedic World

Ancient World was a Vedic World  "Hindu Dharma" is a book which contains English translation of certain invaluable and engrossing speeches of Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi MahaSwamiji (at various times during the years 1884 to 1994).

"The fact according to me, is that in the beginning the Vedic religion was prevalent all over the world. Later, over the centuries, it must have gone through a process of change and taken different forms. These forms came to be called the original religions of these various lands which in the subsequent period- during historical times- came under Buddhism, Christianity or Islam as the case may be."

In the dim past what we call Hinduism today was prevalent all over the world. Archaeological studies reveal the existence of relics of our Vedic religion in many countries. For instance, excavations have brought up the text of a treaty between Rameses II and the Hittites dating back to the 14th century B. C. In this, the Vedic gods Mitra and Varuna are mentioned as witnesses to the pact. There is a connection between the name of Ramesses and that of our Rama.

About 75 per cent of the names of places in Madagascar have a Sanskritic origin.

In the Western Hemisphere too there is evidence of Hinduism having once flourished there. In Mexico a festival is celebrated at the same time as our Navaratri; it is called "Rama-Sita". Wherever the earth is dug up images of Ganapati are discovered here. The Aztecs had inhabited Mexico before the Spaniards conquered that land. "Aztecs " must be a distorted form of "Astikas". In Peru, during the time of the holy equinox [vernal? ] worship was conducted in the sun temple. The people of this land were called Incas: "Ina" is one of the Sanskrit names of the sun god. Don't we call Rama Inakula-tilaka?

There is book containing photographs of the aborigines of Australia dancing in the nude (The Native Tribes of Central Australia, by Spencer Killan, pages 128 & 129). A close look at the pictures, captioned "Siva Dance", shows that the dancers have a third eye drawn on the forehead.

In a virgin forest in Borneo which, it is said, had not been penetrated by any human being until recently, explorers have found a sacrificial post with an inscription in a script akin to our Granthas characters. Historians know it as the inscription of Mulavarman of Kotei. Mention is made in it of a sacrifice, the king who performed it, the place where the yupas was installed. That the king gave away kalpavrksass as a gift to Brahmins is also stated in this inscription. All such details were discovered by Europeans, the very people who ridicule our religion.

Now something occurs to me in this context, something that you may find amusing. You know that the Sagaras went on digging the earth down to the nether world in search of their sacrificial horse. An ocean came into being in this way and it was called sagara after the king Sagara.

The Sagaras, at last found the horse near the hermitage of Kapila Maharsi. Thinking that he must be the man who had stolen the animal and hidden it in the nether world they laid violent hands on him. Whereupon the sage reduced them to ashes with a mere glance of his eye. Such is the story according to the Ramayana. America, which is at the antipodes, may be taken to Patala or the nether world. Kapilaranya(the forest in which Kapila had his hermitage), we may further take it, was situated there. It is likely that Kapilaranya changed to California in the same manner as Madurai is something altered to "Marudai". Also noteworthy is the fact that there is a Horse Island near California as well as an Ash Island.

Another idea occurs to me about Sagara and sagara. Geologists believe that ages ago the Sahara desert was an ocean. It seems to me that Sahara is derived from sagara.

Some historians try to explain the evidence pointing to the worldwide prevalence of our religion in the past to the exchange of cultural and religious ideas between India and other countries established through travels. I myself believe that there was one common religion or dharma throughout and that the signs and symbols that we find of this today are the creation of the original inhabitants of the lands concerned.

The view put forward by some students of history about the discovery of the remnants of our religion in other countries- these relating to what is considered the historical period of the past two or three thousand years- is that Indians went to these lands, destroyed the old native civilizations there and imposed Hindu culture in their place. Alternatively, they claim, Indians thrust their culture into the native ways of life in such a way that it became totally absorbed in them.

The fact, however, is that evidence is to be found in many countries of their Vedic connection dating back to 4, 000 years or more. That is, with the dawn of civilization itself, aspects of the Vedic dharama existed in these lands. It was only subsequently that the inhabitants of these regions came to have a religion of their own.

Greece had an ancient religion and had big temples where various deities were worshipped. The Hellenic religion had Vedic elements in it. The same was the case with the Semitic religions of the pre- Christian era in the region associated with Jesus. The aborigines of Mexico had a religion of their own. They shared the Vedic view of the divine in the forces of nature and worshipped them as deities. There was a good deal of ritual in all such religions.

Now none of these religions, including that of Greece, survives. The Greek civilization had once attained to the heights of glory. Now Christianity flourishes in Greece. Buddhism has spread in Central Asia and in East Asia up to Japan. According to anthropologists, religions in their original form exist only in areas like the forests of Africa. But even these ancient faiths contain Vedic elements.

Religious and philosophical truths are often explained through parables, stories, so that ignorant people can understand them easily. Since metaphysical concepts are difficult to grasp, either they have to be told in the form of a story or they have to be given the form of a ritual, that is they must find expression as religious acts. For the common people the performance of a rite is a means of finding the truth present in it in the form of a symbol. I do not, however, agree with the view that all rituals are nothing but symbolic in their significance and that there is no need to perform them so long as their inner meaning is understood.

Ritual as ritual has its own place and efficacy. Similarly, I would not say that stories from the Puranas are nothing but illustrations or explanations of certain truths or doctrines. As stories they are of a high order and I believe that they really happened. But, at the same time, they demonstrate the meaning of certain truths. As for rites, their performance brings up benefits. But in due course, as we learn to appreciate their inner meaning we shall become purified in mind. This is the stage when we shall no more yearn for any benefits from their performance and will be rewarded with supreme well-being (that is, liberation).

It is likely, though, that, with the passage of time, some stories or rites will become far removed from their inner meaning. Or, it may be, the inner meaning will be altogether forgotten. So it must be that, when new religions took shape abroad, after the lapse of thousands of years-religions not connected with the Vedic faith that is the root-the original Vedic concepts become transformed or distorted.

You must be familiar with the story of Adam and Eve which belongs to the Hebrew tradition. It occurs in the Genesis of the Old Testament and speaks of the tree of knowledge and God's commandment that its fruit shall not be eaten. Adam at first did not eat it but Eve did. After that Adam too ate the forbidden fruit.

Here an Upanisadic concept has taken the form of a biblical story. But because of the change in the time and place the original idea has become distorted-or even obliterated.

The Upanisadic story speaks of two birds perched on the branch of a pippala tree. One eats the fruit of tree while the order merely watches its companion without eating. The pippala tree stands for the body. The first bird represents a being that regards himself as the jivatman or individual self and the fruit it eats signifies sensual pleasure. In the same body (symbolized by the tree) the second bird is to be understood as the Paramatman. He is the support of all beings but he does not know sensual pleasure. Since he does not eat the fruit he naturally does not have the same experience as the jivatman (the first). The Upanisad speaks with poetic beauty of the two birds. He who eats the fruit is the individual self, jiva, and he who does not eat is the Supreme Reality, the one who knows himself to be the Atman.

It is this jiva that has come to be called Eve in the Hebrew religious tradition. "Ji" changes to "i" according to a rule of grammar and "ja" to "ya". We have the example of "Yamuna" becoming "Jamuna" or of "Yogindra" being changed to "Joginder ". In the biblical story "jiva" is "Eve" and "Atma" (or "Atman") is "Adam". "Pippala" has in the same way changed to "apple". The Tree of Knowledge is our "bodhi-vrksa". "Bodha" means "knowledge". It is well known that the Budhha attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree. But the pipal (pippala) was known as the bodhi tree even before his time.

The Upanisadic ideas transplanted into a distant land underwent a change after the lapse of centuries. Thus we see in the biblical story that the Atman (Adam) that can never be subject to sensual pleasure also eats the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. While our bodhi tree stands for enlightenment, the enlightenment that banishes all sensual pleasure, the biblical tree affords worldly pleasure. These differences notwithstanding there is sufficient evidence here that, once upon a time, Vedic religion was prevalent in the land of the Hebrews.

Let me give the another example to strengthen the view that however much a custom or a concept changes with the passage of time and with its acceptance by people of another land, it will still retain elements pointing to its original source. Our TiruppavaiT and TiruvembavaiT are not as ancient as the Vedas. Scholars ascribe them to an age not later than 1, 500 years ago. However it be, the authors of these Tamil hymns, AndalT and ManikkavacakarT, belong to an age much later than that of the Vedas and epics. After their time Hindu empires arose across the seas. Even the Cola kings extended their sway beyond the shores of the country. More worthy of note than our naval expeditions was the great expansion in our sea trade and the increase with it of our foreign contacts. As a result, people abroad were drawn to the Hindu religion and culture. Among the regions that developed such contacts, South-East Asia was the most important. Islands like Bali in the Indonesian archipelago became wholly Hindu. People in Siam (Thailand), Indochina and the Philippines came under the influence of Hindu culture. Srivijaya was one of the great empires of South-East Asia.

[Here the Paramaguru briefly touches upon the stages representing the emergence of various religions]. In primeval times the Vedic religion was prevalent everywhere: this was the first stage. In the second stage new religions emerged in various parts of the world. In the third stage these decayed and their place was taken by Buddhism, Christianity or Islam. In the subsequent stage the Hindu civilization became a living force outside the shores of India also, particularly in South-East Asia. This was the period during which great temples reminding us of those of Tamil Nadu arose with the spread of our religion and culture: Angkor-vat in Cambodia; Borobudur in Java, Indonesia; Prambanan, also in Java. Now it was that our Tiruppavai and Tiruvembavai made their passage to Thailand.

Even today a big festival is held in Thailand in December- January, corresponding to the Tamil Margazhi, the same month during which we read the Tiruppavai and Tiruvembavai with devotion. As part of the celebrations a dolotsava (swing festival) is held. A remarkable feature of this is that, in the ceremony meant for Visnu, a man with the make-up of Siva is seated on the swing. This seems to be in keeping with the fact that the Tiruppavai and Tiruvembavai contribute to the unification of Vaisnavism and Saivism.

If you ask the people of Thailand about the Pavai poems, they will not be able to speak about them. It might seem then that there is no basis for connecting the that festival with the Pavai works merely because it is held in the month corresponding to the Tamil Murgazhi. But the point to note is that the people of that country themselves call it "Triyampavai- Trippavai".

Those who read the Bible today are likely to be ignorant about the Upanisads, but they are sure to know the story that can be traced back to them, that of Adam and Eve. The Thais now must be likewise ignorant about the Pavis but, all the same, they hold in the month of Dhanus every year a celebration called "Triyampavai - Trippavai. " As part of it they also have a swing festival in which figures a man dressed as Siva. Here the distortion in the observance of a rite have occurred during historical times- one of the distortions is that of Siva being substituted for Visnu. Also during this period the Thais have forgotten the Pavis but, significantly enough, they still conduct a festival named after them. Keeping these before you, take mind back to three thousand years ago and imagine how a religion or a culture would have changed after its passage to foreign lands.

It is in this context that you must consider the Vedic tradition. For all the changes and distortions that it has undergone in other countries during the past millennia its presence there is still proclaimed through elements to be found in the religions that supplanted it.

How are we to understand the presence of Hindu ideas or concepts in the religious beliefs of people said to belong to prehistoric times?
It does not seem right to claim that in the distant past our religion or culture was propagated in other countries through an armed invasion or through trade, that is at a time when civilization itself has not taken shape there. That is why I feel that there is no question of anything having been taken from this land and introduced into another country. The fact according to me, is that in the beginning the Vedic religion was prevalent all over the world. Later, over the centuries, it must have gone through a process of change and taken different forms. These forms came to be called the original religions of these various lands which in the subsequent period- during historical times- came under Buddhism, Christianity or Islam as the case may be.

THE FROGS AND THE STONE

Some frogs were worshipping a stone. I was their tradition that this stone next to their frog pond was their deity, their god. So they would go to this stone and they would bow down and pray. One young frog thought, "Why have these frogs been bowing down to this stone for generations? What's so special about this stone anyway?"
So one day in the middle of the worship when all the frogs were bowing down before the stone, this young frog jumped over the stone. Everyone was shocked. "You've jumped over the stone!"
"Yes!" the young frog exclaimed. "So how can that be God? Why have you been worshipping this stone for so long? If that was God, how could I have jumped over it?"
And then the frogs said, "Yes, it's true what he's saying. We've been so foolish! So, our dear young frog, then you please tell us what should we worship?"
"You should worship an entity who is so tall that you cannot jump over him."
"Oh? Who is that?"
"I have seen one big, white bird with a long beak. The stork. He's very tall. A frog cannot jump over a stork."
"Oh very good! Let's go to the stork."
So they all went to the stork and they were paying obeisances. But the stork thought, "Aah! For so long I've had to hunt for frogs to eat, but now they're all coming to me. Very nice." So he ate them all.

MORAL: This story is to illustrate that when one is bewildered, in an inferior state of consciousness, then his conception of the absolute will always be inferior. He can play these mental games, finding faults in previous conclusions and inventing new conclusions, but they're all taking place on a very inferior platform, like the frogs.

East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....

CAULIFLOWER IN CREAM CHEESE - Govardhan Lila devi dasi's

Servings: 4 Serving size: 1 serving Preparation time: 1 hour
Ingredients:
1 large cauliflower, head
1 medium zucchini
2 cups panir ( or ricotta )
4 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon asafetida
2 tablespoons coriander, fresh
1 teaspoon salt to taste
¼ teaspoon pepper

Wash the vegetables. Mince the fresh coriander leaves, set aside. Cut the cauliflower in slices, about ½ cm thick, make sure you have a good slice, try not brake it in small pieces. In a non-stick frying pan heat the oil, add asafetida, when is golden brown lower the heat to very low,, add the cauliflower slices flat, don’t stack them, you may have to cook them some at time.. Cover. Check it often and carefully turn it around when one side is slightly brown. Keep turning until they are tender and ready. Cook the rest of the cauliflower, add more oil if you need , to prevent sticking to the pan. At the end cook any small pieces you have left.

While the cauliflower is cooking, grate the skin off the zucchini (save the zucchini for some soup or dal). In a blender mix the panir (the panir should be freshly made because you need it hot and wet), the zucchini peel, salt to taste, a pinch of black pepper, add some whey from the panir to make a smooth, liquid like yogurt cream cheese. ( The zucchini peel will add some cool greenish hue). Blend for few minutes until smooth. Pour still warm over cooked cauliflower. Sprinkle some coriander leaves. Offer, serve, enjoy it!

This recipe come from Arthia, one of my cooking mentors.

DOUGHNUTS - Govardhan Lila devi dasi's

Servings : 18 Serving size : 1 piece
Ingredients:
1 Packet Yeast , active dry
¼ cup water, warm
2 table spoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup butter
4 cups all purpose flour
1 cup milk, scalded
oil for deep friying

Soften yeast in warm water . In mixing bowl, combine sugar, salt, butter and milk. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast. Gradually add flour to form a stiff dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and satiny, 3 to 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning dough to grease all sides. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubles, about 1 hour.

Roll out dough on floured surface to ½ inch thickness. Cut with 3 1/3 inch floured doughnut cutter (or anything that will serve the purpose). Place on ungrreased cookie sheets. Let rice again until doubled, about 30 minutes. Fry deep hot fat (375 F), 2 or 3 minutes in each side, until golden brown. Drain on absorbent paper. While warm, roll in powder sugar, or coat with any glaze of your choice.

CARAMEL HALAVA - Govardhan Lila devi dasi's

 Serving: 4 Serving size: 1cup
Ingredients:
 2 cups farina - Suji - semolina
3 cups Sugar
1 cup Butter
1 cup walnuts
3 cups Hot Water

In a saucepan melt a tablespoon of butter, add the sugar. At low heat let the sugar melt and caramel, turning constantly to prevent burning. When the sugar is all caramelled add the hot water. At first the sugar will crystal, but slowly will melt and you will have caramel flavored water.

In a saucepan melt the rest of the butter, add the farina. Toast the farina until golden brown, add the walnuts (quartered), add the hot caramel water. Let cook until all the water is absorbed.. Quickly stir the halava to make it smooth.

Transfer the halava on a slightly greased tray. Let it set then cut in cubes.

You could serve it in spoonful too.

When I was in Greece we (all of us at the temple) used to go in harinama at least once a week. Every time we went we distributed some halava. Since halava is a very popular sweet in Greece. I wanted to make a special halava, different from one the Greek people of Athens were used to taste. So, I concocted this "Caramel Halava". It was a success! Many people came to the temple just to ask how it was made.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

You'll also notice that we have a book sale of our Living a Good Life book, and it is ideal for vegetarian families - it covers pregnancy, childcare and the teen years, not to mention adults and the elderly.  We've just reprinted more copies as a result of recent demand, and these are selling well, with the proceeds going to vegetarian products including a farm animal sanctuary down our way.

The book "Living a Good Life" normally selling at $21.95 is now going at the $14.95 price, .http://vegsoc.wellington.net.nz/livingGd.htm

Laughter Therapy - its no joke:
http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/yod/march98/news.htm

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

Thanx to my friends - working together

It has been found that it's true that grey hair makes you look distinguished.
Only in that it distinguishes you from the younger-looking people.

Thankfully such austerities are not the yuga dharma

A man was being tailgated by a stressed-out woman on a busy boulevard.

Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman hit the roof and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection with him.

While she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping the guy off in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car."

Thanks for this lil' gem Shyam'

Taking advantage of a balmy day in New York, a priest and three other men of the cloth swapped their clerical garb for polos and khakis and time out on the golf course. After several really horrible shots, their caddy asked, "You guys wouldn't be priests by any chance?"

"Actually, yes, we are," one cleric replied. "How did you know?"

"Easy," said the caddy, "I've never seen such bad golf and such clean language!"

The phone rang as we were sitting down to dinner.  I answered it and was greeted with, "Is this William Wagenhoss?"

This didn't sound anything like my name, so I asked, "Who is calling?"

The telemarketer said he was with The Rubberband-Powered Freezer Company or something like that.  I asked him if he knew William personally and why was he was calling this number.  I then said, off to the side, "Get really good pictures of the body and all the blood."

I turned back to the phone and advised the caller that he had called a murder scene and must stay on the line because we had already traced this call and he would be receiving a summons to appear at the local courthouse to testify in this murder case.

I questioned the caller at great length as to his name, address, phone number at home, at work, who he worked for, how he knew the dead guy and could he prove where he had been about one hour before he made this call.  The telemarketer was getting very concerned and his answers were given in a shaky voice.

I proceeded to tell him we had located his position at his work place and the police were entering the building to take him into custody. At this point, I heard the phone fall and the scurrying of his running away.

My wife asked me as I returned to our table, why I had tears streaming down my face and so help me, I couldn't tell her for about fifteen minutes.
My prasadam (food) was cold, but oh-so-very enjoyable.

"What am I supposed to do with this?" grumbled the motorist as the police clerk handed him a receipt for his speeding traffic fine.

"Keep it," the clerk advised. "When you get three of them, you get to ride a a bicycle."

Indian Express Train

Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife.

Tearfully she explained, "It's the druggist. He insulted me terribly this morning on the phone. I had to call multiple times before he would even answer the phone."  Immediately, the husband drove downtown to confront the druggist and demand an apology.

Before he could say more than a word or two, the druggist told him, "Now, just a minute, listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm failed to go off, so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car,G just to realize that locked the house with both house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get my keys.  "Then, driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket.

"Later, when I was about three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire.
When I finally got to the store a bunch of people were waiting for me to open up I got the store opened and started waiting on these people, and all the time the darn phone was ringing off the hook."

He continued, "Then I had to break a roll of nickels against the cash register drawer to make change, and they spilled allover the floor. I had to get down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels and the phone was still ringing.

"When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on it. Half of them hit the floor and broke.

"Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let up, and I finally got back to answer it. It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer.

"And believe me mister, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her."

Did you ever wonder?

JTCd's NOTE, and this is 100% True:.....just a funny footnote to this joke, I was at an initiation in Melbourne, Australia in the 1980s where one devotee was asked "What are the four regulative principles that we follow?" His reply brought the house down "No Meat Eating, No Gambling, No Intoxication and No illiterate sex." to which the rather quick witted Guru replied "so if you can't spell it don't do it !!!"

I knew a guy who was a flower child. Now he's a blooming idiot.

My brother dropped off his wife at the hairstylist and she was supposed to call him when she was ready to be picked-up.
She must have dialed a wrong number, she reported later.

She called, and a man said, "Hello," to which she cheerfully said, "Come and get me!"

The man replied, "Are you sure? This is Mitchell's funeral home."

Two confirmed bachelors sat talking, their conversation drifted from politics to cooking.

"I got a Hare Krishna cookbook one the street once," said one, "but I could never do anything with it."

"Too much fancy work in it, eh?" asked the other.

"You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way -- 'Take a clean dish...'"

The ways of this material world - strange but true

I saw this stand-up comedienne in a bar years ago & was impressed with her then.

Remember that 560-pound criminal who was released from jail because he had asthma?

He claimed jail was bad for him. Who made up this rule? I thought jail was supposed to be a little bit bad for you. Apparently not anymore. Apparently now it's like, "Sorry, claustrophobia. Can't go. Wish I could. Sorry." The electric chair? "No way.

Even a heating pad gives me a rash." -- Paula Poundstone

From Shara:

I was aware that Balinder Singh, one of my middle-school students, was expected to attend a presentation on adolescence in another fifth-grade class, but I hadn't been informed of the time.

In the middle of his written language lesson, he suddenly looked at the clock, jumped up from his desk and ran from the room without a word of explanation.

"What are you doing?" I shouted after him.

"I have to go," Balinder Singh yelled down the hall.

"I'm late for puberty!"

Totally Believable and Totally True.

As a Delta Air Lines jet was flying over Arizona on a clear day, the co-pilot was providing his passengers with a running commentary about landmarks over the PA system.

"Coming up on the right, you can see the Meteor Crater, which is a major tourist attraction in northern Arizona. It was formed when a lump of nickel and iron, roughly 150 feet in diameter and weighing 300,000 tons, struck the earth at about 40,000 miles an hour, scattering white-hot debris for miles in every direction. The hole measures nearly a mile across and is 570 feet deep."

From the cabin, a passenger was heard to exclaim, "Wow! It just missed the highway!"

The applicant for life insurance was finding it difficult to fill out the application.
The salesman asked what the trouble was, and the man said that he couldn't answer the question about the cause of death of his father.

The salesman wanted to know why. After some embarrassment the client explained that his father had been hanged.

The salesman pondered for a moment. "Just write: 'Father was taking part in a public function when the platform gave way.'"

.......more optical illusions and paradigm twists here:

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing.
"Mr. President, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed yesterday"
"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible, terrible news!"

There's silence in the room. Bush's staff sits stunned at his display of
emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.
Finally, the President looks up and asks his Secretary of Defense

"Exactly how many is a brazillion?"
