Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials
have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor
to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of
perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished
would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go
on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Vegan Barbecue Recipe (Best Ever)
This week the Ohio University Vegan Cooking Workshop churns out another
fabulous meal, with vegan barbecue as the main center piece for the meal.
The meal was West African, with Fufu's and palm nut soup, along with rice, a salad, and our special Barbecue recipe, served shis ka bob style on skewers with roasted peppers. Along with pineapple pound cake and strawberry lemonade for desert. When we went to the African store we asked them what they eat for desert, she told us either corned beef or pound cake, so we went with the pound cake, although I'm not so sure how traditional it is.
I use the term recipe, which is kind of a misnomer because we usually just speculate are way through each week. This is more inspirational than detail oriented. Hopefully you'll by inspired to create something wonderful your self. Have fun, be creative.
The first step is to mix the wheat gluten with the dry spices. Usually we use curry powder, paprika, chili powder, black pepper, and asafotida(hing).
Then you add small amounts of water and knead it (but not too much), just until it looks "brainish."
Then you add the olive oil, peanut butter, and nutritional yeast, and employ the special patented "pulling technique," make sure it is mixed thoroughly, otherwise according to Balaramacandra you end up with "cancers," hard unedible tumors.
In the end if mixed properly the gluten should have a stringy texture as demonstrated by Balaramacandra below.
Once it is mixed thoroughly shape it into "ribs" and place them on an oiled baking tray.
Bake until golden brown (approx. 13.7895 minutes)
Then dip in Barbecue sauce and bake again until crispy
(sorry no picture, I had to step out of the kitchen and Balaram was
remiss in his photography duties.)
Then we tore the gluten into smaller pieces, and put the chunks on skewers along with sauteed green peppers. (One could serve this in any number of ways, great in Chinese or Japanese stir fry, Balarama's favorite is in a Terayaki sauce with veges, also great on sandwiches)
And the finally and most important step, offer it to Krishna with love and devotion, and then serve and enjoy.
"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, or vegan shish ka bob I will accept it."

Savoury Urad Dal Doughnuts (Vadai)
http://www.kurma.net/glossary/g4.html
Dal soaking time: 2 hours
Preparation and cooking time: 45 minutes
Makes 15 20 vadais
Ingredients:
1 cup split urad dal
1 teaspoon yellow asafetida powder
4 medium-sized green chilies
1 teaspoon salt
a scant ¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup finely chopped cabbage
Finely-chopped leaves from one small bunch coriander
Oil for deep-frying
Wash the dal well in repeated changes of water until the water is clear. Soak the dal in 3 cups cold water for 3 hours.
Drain the dal completely, and place it in a food processor with a metal blade. Add the asafetida, chilies and salt, and process into a thick batter. Transfer the batter to a bowl, add the cabbage and coriander leaves, and mix well.
Whisk the mixture for 1 or 2 minutes to put air into the batter.
Heat 2 or 3 inches of oil to 170 degrees C/340 degrees F in a deep pan or wok. When you are ready to fry, mix the baking soda into the batter. Divide the thick batter into 15 or 20 lumps on a large plate. Take a lump of batter and place it on the palm of your hand. Moisten your other hand with water, and press to flatten the batter into a round patty. Make a hole in the centre of the patty. It should resemble a small doughnut.
Slip the vadai into the hot oil. Repeat quickly, and fry the vadai in 2 or 3 batches, without crowding the pan. When they float to the surface, fry them, turning them to ensure even cooking, for about 4 or 5 minutes, or until they are reddish-brown and crisp. Remove and drain them on paper towels, and serve hot with chutney of your choice, like the one that follows.

Making Food Sacred - Offering
our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do
some pro-veg works like the following:
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.
Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops,
too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.
