Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials
have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor
to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of
perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished
would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go
on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Fettuccine With Asparagus and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
4 servings
Fettucine teams well with the delicate asparagus of spring. Using a combination green-and-white fettucine give this dish visual appeal as well.
Ingredients:
12 ounces fettuccine (try spinach or a whole
grain variety)
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tspns hing
One 28-ounce can diced tomatoes, with liquid
1/2 cup thinly sliced oil-cured sun-dried tomatoes
3 or 4 fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced, or
1/2 to 1 teaspoon dried
1/4 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes, or a few
grains cayenne pepper
10 to 12 ounces slender fresh asparagus, trimmed
and cut into 1-inch pieces
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Cook the pasta in plenty of rapidly simmering water until al dente, then drain.
Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the hing and sauté over low heat. Add the diced and dried tomatoes, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer, then add the asparagus and simmer over medium-low heat, covered, until the asparagus is tender-crisp, about 8 minutes.
Combine the pasta, asparagus, and sauce in a large serving bowl and toss well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Offer to Krishna and serve at once, passing around the Parmesan to anyone who wishes to top their pasta with it.
To complete the meal: Make a simple salad with a base of mesclun (mixed baby greens). Add tomatoes, carrots, and/or peppers and dress with a natural low-fat vinaigrette.
The original author of the recipe says "Serve with a good store-bought
foccacia bread."
BOONDI
Ingredients:
2 cups gram flour
1/4 cup rice flour
1-1/3 to 1/1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon cumin poweder
1 teaspoon salt
Pinch baking soda
Ghee or Oil for frying
Sift the flours with soda. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix with water. Heat oil on medium heat. Hold the strainer or spoon with holes above the oil in the skillet. Take a large spoonful of the mixture, pour in the small holed spoon and spread gently. Small portions of the dough drops into the oil, to make round droplets of boondi. Remove the spoon from above the oil as soon as the skillet is three-fouths full of boondi. Stir and fry until golden brown. Drain in slotted spoon and remove. Prepare all the dough in the same manner. Be sure to stir gently or instead of small droplets one can end up with one big blob of boondi. A Chakli press with medium size holes may be used in place of boondi spatula. Care should be taken to move it around while dropping flour in oil/ghee..as splashing hot ghee can be dangerous and painful.
Boondi can be used in making sweets, or can be used in raitas, or even just on their own.
Pineapple Rice Pudding
A fruity twist on a very traditional dish. If you're not a big fan
of pineapple, use fresh peaches as a substitute.
Serves 4 fasting brahmacharins or two hungry ones:
Ingredients:
284ml (10fl oz) double (heavy) cream
400ml (14fl oz) whole milk
400g (14oz) long grain/pudding rice
1 pineapple, peeled and chopped
6 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
4 tbsp soft brown sugar
To serve
30g (1oz) butter
8 slices pineapple
Method:
1. Heat the cream and milk in a saucepan over a medium heat and once
boiling add the rice. Simmer for five minutes over a low heat.
2. Add the pineapple and cardamom to the saucepan and simmer gently
for ten minutes, adding extra milk to keep the rice covered in liquid if
necessary.
3. Add the brown sugar and continue cooking, stirring continuously,
for a further five minutes or until the rice is cooked through.
4. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a large frying pan over a medium-high
heat. Add the pineapple and gently fry the slices for three minutes on
each side, or until golden brown.
5. To serve, spoon the rice pudding into four bowls and place two fried
pineapple slices on the top of each.
Pecan Slice
Crisp shortbread on the bottom and delicious chewy nut caramel on the top makes these pecan slices seriously addictive, test your self restraint, see if you can just have once slice. Ha what with all this false renunciation, limit yourself to five slices per day and share the rest with like minded lovers of prasadam.
Makes 12-16 slices
Ingredients:
For the base:
100g (3.5 oz) butter
50g (2oz) caster (refined granulated) sugar
225g (8oz) plain flour
For the topping:
150g (5oz) butter
100g (3.5 oz) clear honey
200g (7oz) light muscovado (brown) sugar
2 tbsp double (heavy) cream
175g (6oz) shelled pecan nuts, lightly toasted
and roughly chopped
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 180 C/350 F/Gas 4. Line a 33 x 18cm (13 x 7in)
baking tin with baking parchment. Whiz the butter, sugar and flour together
in a food processor to a smooth dough.
2. Press the mixture into the tin and bake for 15 minutes, until the base is firm and golden.
3. Meanwhile, make the topping. Place the butter, honey and sugar in a heavy-based pan. Cook over a low heat until the butter is melted, stirring with a wooden spoon.
4. Increase the heat and boil the mixture for 3 minutes, then remove from the heat and stir in the cream and pecan nuts.
5. Pour over the set shortbread and bake for a further 20-25 minutes until the topping is bubbling and a rich caramel colour. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.
6. Chill until set, cut into bars, offer and serve.
Peach and Blueberry Soured Cream Cobbler
Serves 4
Ingredients:
For the cobbler crust:
150g (5½oz) plain flour
a pinch of salt
2 tsp baking powder
1 heaped tbsp caster (refined granulated) sugar,
plus
extra for dusting
80g (3oz) butter
small pot of soured cream (142ml/5fl oz)
For the cobbler:
3 ripe peaches, sliced
350g (12oz) blueberries
1 lemon, juice only
1 tbsp caster (refined granulated) sugar, plus
more
for dusting
1 tbsp plain flour
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.
2. For the cobbler crust, put the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar and butter in a food processor and blitz for a few seconds, until the mixture resembles soft, fresh breadcrumbs. Tip into a bowl. Mix the soured cream into the crumb mixture. You will have a soft dough.
3. Arrange the peach slices in an ovenproof dish. Toss with the blueberries, lemon juice, sugar and flour. At this point, it will look less than inviting, but don't worry.
4. Break off walnut-sized pieces of the dough and flatten them lightly. Lay them on top of the fruit. Dust the rounds of dough with sugar, then bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, until the cobbler is golden and the fruit is bubbling.
Making Food Sacred - Offering
our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do
some pro-veg works like the following:
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.
Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops,
too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.
