Background: Workers and police arrived on 15th June at the village near Almaty, Kazakhstan, where the embattled Hare Krishna commune is based to demolish twelve more Hare Krishna-owned homes. “The houses were literally crushed into dust. By ten o’clock it was all over,” said ISKCON spokesperson Maksim Varfolomeyev.

The temple, which the devotees have been ordered to destroy, has not been touched but the devotees fear it could be the next target. Human rights activist Yevgeny Zhovtis is outraged at the continuing destruction. “The authorities are showing that they will do what they want, despite the international outrage at the earlier demolitions of Hare Krishna-owned homes.” He believes the local administration chief “doesn’t care about the political damage to Kazakhstan’s reputation – or to its desire to chair the OSCE.”

The future of Hare Krishna devotees in Kazakhstan is still in doubt months after the government demolished two dozen homes of believers. Widespread human rights abuses by the government have mobilized human rights organizations in the US to oppose the Kazahk bid to chair an important international organization, the OSCE.

Freedom House, together with six of the U.S.’s most prominent human rights organizations, issued a letter today to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, urging her to strongly oppose a bid by Kazakhstan to chair the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2009.

Despite a well-documented record of undemocratic governance, Kazakhstan has continued to push to lead the OSCE, an organization with a respected track record in human rights promotion and election monitoring. After years of lobbying by the Kazakhstani government, most European countries now support Kazakhstan’s bid. Only the U.S. and the U.K. are still in opposition, and a change of position by the U.S. may be imminent.

“A chairmanship by Kazakhstan would irreparably damage the OSCE’s legitimacy and ability to defend those working on the front lines for democratic change,” wrote the groups in the letter. “It would render the organization powerless in promoting vibrant civil societies and human rights, and will assure a solidly undemocratic government that democratic credentials do not matter. We strongly urge that the United States government reconsider a tacit endorsement of Kazakhstan’s bid.”

The letter was signed by representatives of Amnesty International USA, Global Rights, Human Rights First, Human Rights Watch, Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, and Physicians for Human Rights, as well as Freedom House.

Dear Secretary Rice:

We understand that a U.S. decision to concur in the selection of Kazakhstan to preside over the Organization for Security and Cooperation during the 2009 term is imminent. Due to the Kazakhstani government’s poor record on democracy, we believe that its chairmanship will be a disaster for the OSCE’s ability to be a guarantor of human rights among its member states and that the U.S. should therefore continue to oppose it.

Kazakhstan’s anti-democratic record is well-documented. Kazakhstan has yet to hold a national election that meets OSCE standards. President Nazarbayev’s sweeping victory in the December 2005 presidential election came against a backdrop of government pressure on the country’s civil society and political opposition, charges of electoral fraud, and a highly critical report by poll monitors from the OSCE. The brutal February 2006 murder of opposition leader Altynbek Sarsenbayev highlighted the country’s disturbing tendency toward political violence. President Nazarbayev’s welcoming of the single-party parliament that resulted from the August elections as “a wonderful opportunity toi speed up our country’s economic and political modernization" speaks volumes to his respect for institutions promoting pluralism.

Over the years, the OSCE has established a respected track record of credibility in election monitoring and human rights defense. In fact, it is one of the few remaining serious intergovernmental bodies that advocates for democracy and human rights. A Kazakhstan chairmanship would irreparably damage the OSCE’s legitimacy and ability to defend those working on the front lines for democratic change.

In 2005, President Bush said that “one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world.” Kazakhstan is one such dark corner that remains. Rewarding Kazakhstan with the OSCE chairmanship will only serve to assure a solidly undemocratic government that democratic credentials do not matter, while sending a stark message to human rights defenders around the world. At this crucial time, the countries of Europe cannot afford to ignore the defense of liberty and human rights, nor can the U.S. We strongly urge that the United States government reconsider this tacit endorsement of Kazakhstan’s bid.

ISKCON Leader Addresses OSCE Conference In Warsaw

Warsaw--ISKCON Leader, BB Govinda Swami, addressed an international conference of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), commonly known as the Helsinki Commission, on September 26th. The Swami is the spiritual head of the Hare Krishna community in Kazakhstan, where repeated abuses of believers by the government authorities have drawn international protests [see article here].

The issue is drawing increased attention at this time, because Kazakhstan is up for election to the Chair of the OSCE, and many governments are opposing due to the poor history of humanitarian rights in Kazakhstan.

The speech is printed below in its entirety.

Thank you Mr. Moderator,

Yesterday there was fine discussion on combating intolerance and discrimination.

I would like to present examples of how governments quite unfortunately use intolerance and discrimination to impede the freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and belief.

Since the 2006 HDIM (Human Dimension Implementation Meeting) the Kazakh Government has destroyed the Krishna commune in Kazakhstan.

Demolition of 14 homes of Krishna Hindu practitioners, and eviction of families, took place in November 2006.

Homes were destroyed one by one. Mothers with infants were thrown from their homes into the snow. Family belongings were loaded on trucks and driven away.

Kazakhstan has been requested by numerous organizations to address the issue of those who suffered due to demolitions. But nothing has been done to improve the situation.

The situation has become worse. New cases, and, another demolition conducted in June 2007, at 5 AM while people were still in bed. Twelve more homes destroyed, bringing the grand total of 26 homes.

Now, that's quite an alarm to wake up to, and, I feel it is a strong alarm that we should all be hearing today.

Only Krishna homes were targeted. Other homeowners with identical legal status, but different religious affiliation, have not had their ownership disturbed.

The government calls the issue a "property dispute," citing infractions committed by the community. But there are more than 40 examples of violation of due process and rule of law, committed by the government. This is never acknowledged.

Mr. Moderator, when a religious community is targeted by a campaign to prevent them from privatizing their land, drive them from their residences, seize their rightfully purchased homes, community land, and place of worship, it is more than a "property issue".

It is an example of an OSCE state using the nation's laws and judicial system for implementing discrimination and violence against a minority religion.

After procuring the list of names of the Krishna Hindus, authorities began selective discrimination stopping privatization of their residences and land plots.

Petition to save Ram Sethu (Adam's bridge)

We are extremely concerned about the continuing reports in the media related to the determination of Indian government especially Ministers of Shipping Mr. Balu and Ambika Soni of Cultural Ministry to the destruction of Ram Sethu (Adam's Bridge) by continuing the sethusamudram project.  The project is fine, but the present route is not, as it involves destruction of the Adam's bridge (Ram Sethu).

The existence of Ram Sethu (Adam's Bridge) has been proved by the satellite pictures of NASA. Details may be seen and read at: http://history.nasa.gov/SP-168/section3b.htm

Foreigners and Indians alike have described it as Rama's bridge since ancient times in their maps and travelogues. The first time someone called it Adam's Bridge was in 1804 by James Rennell, the first surveyor general of the East India Company. Even if the Government of India prefers to use the name Adam's Bridge, it simply proves that not only Hindus but Muslims and Christians too have a reverence for the bridge it is going to destroy.

The Encyclopedia Britannica describes the bridge thus, 'Adam's Bridge also called Rama's Bridge, chain of shoals, between the islands of Mannar, near northwestern Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram, off the southeastern coast of India.' Read at:

The Ram Setu or Adam's Bridge connects India's Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka's Talaimannar. A movement has begun to safeguard it at the shores of Rameshwaram on April 18. Two former judges of the Supreme Court, Justice K T Thomas and Justice V R Krishna Iyer, none of them close to any political party, have warned the government against destroying the Ram Setu.

Ramasethu acted as 'barrier' during tsunami: ADB expert

A former Asian Development Bank expert has urged for preserving the legendary 'Rama Sethu' bridge of 'Ramayana' times now immersed under sea waters, saying it had protected the entire South and South-West of Nagapattinam when the Tsunami struck the coastlines of several countries in the Indian Ocean.

After the Tsunami struck the Indian coasts in December 2004, shoal accumulations of the Rama Sethu acted as a barrier in protecting the coastline on the South and South-West of Nagapattinam.

The devastating high tides caused by the displacement of tectonic events near Banda Aceh in Indonesia circled the entire Sri Lankan Island and partially moved to Kerala and towards the Rama bridge.

''If the bridge is breached for Sethusamudram, the waters would directly gush into the entire peninsular region beyond Dhanushkodi and the coastline in Kerala to Konkan regions in Karnataka-Goa and Maharashtra and the devastation would be incalculable,'' he said.

Even Geological Survey of India in its logo, which describes India in this line etched at the bottom of its insignia -- Aasetu Himachal, meaning India is spread between the Bridge and the Himalayas.

Millions of families of fishermen, Hindus, Muslims and Christians who eke out a living by the sea have formed a protest group under the banner Tamil Nadu Fishermen Sangh headed by Shri Kuppu Ram.

This is comparable to a recent news story from the USA which we highlighted here in HHR

Why has the council rejected the alternative plans put forward by the various organisations?

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the Sethusamudram project on July 2, 2005. The present route of the project essentially requires the destruction of the Ram Setu (Adam's bridge) is intentionally being adopted, while other options, closer to Dhanushkodi, which did not touch the Ram Setu were ignored?

And why is the Indian government hesitating in consulting the issue related to the safety of Ram Sethu (Adam's bridge) with the organizations want to save Ram Sethu (Adam's bridge), scientists and NASA?

Nasty rebels and nice revolutionaries

When young minds get crammed with religious bigotry or extreme ideology interpreted to induce hatred in others, whom they see as hell-bound heathens, pagans and infidels, but is cordially disguised with social niceties; does this not have the potential to desensitize? To whip up frenzied protests and cause such fiery intolerance!

Later on, these same mindsets feel totally besieged, because the democratic process allows everyone to disagree with each other without going to war about it. Their prejudice causes them to move more to the fringes of society to form non-conformist allegiances which are zealously blood red or chillingly blue on the political threatening scale.

They are coldly capable of utilizing heathen, pagan and infidel tools of society such as capital, communications, technology and timing, through power, rank and file, to unleash spectacularly dreadful 911’s, Arkansas, Bali, Cheznya, and Mombasa outrages, which cause the governments of the world to close ranks and trade freedom for security.

They claim to be genuine freedom fighters, religious reformers, martyrs, liberation icons or revolutionaries. Do they have indisputable grievances?

To begin with, they are ­ as all of us ­ born into ­ sammoham ­ delusion, bewildered by dualities like ­ iccha-dvesa ­ desire and hate (BG 7.27) Such radicals are prone to what Srimad Bhagavatam says: “O learned one, in this age of kali, men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided and above all, always disturbed.” (SB 1.1.10)

Clearly they have legitimate concerns as does everybody else who are weighed down mightily by these negatives which produce ­ bhayam ­ fear. People are surrounded by fear stalking as disturbed intolerance.

Whereas normal highly disturbed persons are confined to institutions of the mental kind, those adept at making their disturbances acceptable to sympathizers become despots through vox-populi, and make life intolerable for others. “Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in horrible unbeneficial works meant to destroy the world.”(BG 16.9)

An objection may be raised here. “This is an unfair analysis. Why should I lump in asuras with those who fight, or who have fought against oppressive systems such as apartheid, communism, ruthless military regimes, mogul and British occupation in India and so forth? Surely, these were legitimate struggles?”

Lord Krishna says, abhayam sattva-samsuddhar jnana-yoga-vyavasthitih…., fearlessness, purification of ones existence, cultivation of spiritual knowledge….(BG 16.1-3) in other words, regardless of external circumstances, oppressive or otherwise, Krsna consciousness is practiced independently.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur worked for the detested British system in court, but did not let this hinder his spiritual life. Srila Prabhupada as Abhay Charan was allied to the Gandhi cause when he first met his spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. He conjectured that perhaps the British should first leave India so that her spiritual glories can bask in independence. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta however reasoned that Krsna consciousness was so urgent as not to wait for any material precedence. He certainly did not advocate political agitation.

Another question may be raised. What about Lord Chaitanya’s civil disobedience march to the house of Chand Kazi? Was that not political?

The rally itself was a fully-fledge Hari Nama sankirtana party. The objective was a non-violent protest aimed at nullifying restrictions through reason and argument. Devotees also do this when uncalled for hardship befalls other devotees. The worldwide coordinated protests against Soviet persecution, amendments to the American constitution, Kazakhstan and others, stand out as examples.

Srila Prabhupada states, “It is not necessary to commit violence to stop the opposition from hindering a movement, for one can kill their demoniac behavior with reason and argument.” (CC Adi. 17.130)

To repulse an oppressor by violent methods requires ­ krodah parusyam ­ anger, harshness (BG 16.4) which is not to be confused with the necessary force essential for maintenance of law and order. But still, aren’t ksatriyas like Arjuna possessed of demoniac behavior if such qualities belong to those of asuric-demoniac nature? Furthermore, this extremely passionate activity is ­ rajas tu phalam dukham ­ results in misery (BG 14.16).

The simple answer is found in (SB 10.29.15) “Persons who constantly direct their lust, anger, fear, protective affection, feeling of impersonal oneness or friendship toward Lord Hari are sure to become absorbed on thought of Him.”

We can surely expect atrocities to occur in the future, for it is a perennial clash of interest between proverbial good and evil. History tells how Kamsa committed mass infanticide. Salva indiscriminately bombed Dvaraka with his mystical flying object. Dvivida was a dam buster, arsonist, kidnapper and general nuisance terrorist! Hiranyakasipu sent his supercharged maddened and disturbed cronies to planet earth to destroy the environment and all things connected with Vishnu. Are thing really any different today?

Interestingly, the same Hiranyakasipu, whose mere movement of his eyebrow sent shockwaves of fear into the hearts of the demigods, would break into a trembling, fearful rage at the slightest mention of the holy name ­ Krishna. What does this mean? It means that Krishna and His loving devotees are the absolute nemesis for a demon. Little wonder that such envious minds ­ pravisanto bhyasuyakah ­ blaspheme the real religion. (BG 16.18)

The exponents of the real religion, the sadhus, vaisnavas and acaryas are in fact the real revolutionaries and liberators. Revolutionary because as person Bhagavats ­ representatives of the Srimad Bhagavatam they - namany anantasya yaso = preach the glories of the name, fame, forms and pastimes etc. of the Supreme Lord with a view ­ janatagha-viplavo ­ towards bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of the world’s misdirected civilization. (SB 1.5.11) They are liberators, because they ­ tranaya karunya ­ mercifully deliver the people from ­ samsara-davanala-lida-loka ­ from the blazing fire of material existence.

Though despised by the envious, the merciful devotees are ­ nirmatsarau ­ not envious of anyone. In fact they are the nicest revolutionaries one could ever meet. “The symptoms of a sadhu are that he is tolerant, merciful and friendly to all living entities. He has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime.”(SB 3.25.21)

Our revolutionary quest is not fought in trenches of death and filth, or with weapons of mass destruction, but with ‘Iskcon bullets’ like gulabs. Our samosas are grenades bursting with flavor. The cluster bombs are our puffed rice, chevda and other savories. Our puris and chapattis are the cylindrical stealth bombers. Such prasadam can reach even where the brahmastra weapon cannot do so ­ the soul proper, and help disintegrate all falsehoods.

The ticking time bombs of Srila Prabhupada’s books sit patiently on bookshelves, in hiding places and attics, free from universal time ­ Vaikuntha time ­ to await timely detonation, and reveal sound truths into the hearts of fortunate victims, and expose the whole sham of nasty rebellious workings of the world.

Just as Arjuna saw all his opponents get crushed in the mouths of the multifarious features within the Universal form prior to the Kuruksetra war, someone with an acute sense of deja vu will recognize that the revolutionary efforts of the devotees in manifesting the golden age, is separated only by time, for whatever the Lord predicts has already come to pass.

Yet another question could be raised; the trading of freedom for security by world governments seem to be indicative of a unified attempt to usher in a new world order which many fear ­ will become intolerably regimented and godless, even to the point of prohibiting religious freedom altogether. Would such an extreme condition warrant the use of violence?

I would rather think that we become embroiled in our own little self revolutions - attaining Krishna-prema ­ while revolutionizing the world through the book-Bhagavat way. A tremendous force is required to enable this ­ the force of purity.

Burning Chilli Sparks Terrorist Fear

A pot of burning chilli sparked fears of a biological terror attack in central London.

Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus were called to D’Arblay Street, Soho, after reports of noxious smoke filling the air.

Police closed off three roads and evacuated homes following the alert.

Specialist crews broke down the door to the Thai Cottage restaurant at 1900 BST on Monday where they discovered the source - a 9lb pot of chillies.

The restaurant had been preparing Nam Prik Pao, a red-hot Thai dip which uses extra-hot chillies which are deliberately burnt. But the smell prompted several members of the public to call the emergency services.

Alpaslan Duven, a Turkish journalist based in the restaurant’s building, said: “I was sitting in the office when me and my chief start coughing and I said this was something really dodgy.

“I looked out of the window and saw people rushing and then we heard the sirens.”

Supranee Yodmuang, the restaurant supervisor, was above the restaurant when she received a phone call from her boss.

“It was about 4pm when I saw the police who were closing off the roads but I didn’t know why. My boss rang me and said I had to get out of the building because of a chemical attack.”

She added: “Because we’re Thai, we’re used to the smell of chillies.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The street was closed off for three hours while we were trying to discover the source of the odour.”

First Hindu Temple to be Built in China

It is one of the grandest Hindu temples in the capital and has been built with a lot of thought and precision. An architectural marvel, the Akshardham temple is the cynosure of all eyes.

Soon a replica of it will be constructed, thousands of miles away in China. The first Hindu temple in communist China.

The Chinese government has invited the Swaminarayan Trust that runs the Akshardham temples in Noida and in Gandhinagar, to build a similar temple.

A huge piece of land has been earmarked in Fohsan state, which will not only house the temple but also an Indian cultural centre.

"Initial thoughts are to have a cultural centre also along with the temple, a traditional Indian music learning centre and also various Indian language teaching centres including Hindi, on this temple premises," said Jagat Shah, Joint Secretary-General, Indo-China Trade Council.

The Swaminarayan Trust has welcomed the decision, saying there's much more to it than the religious angle.

"This decision taken by Chinese government, letting the Hindus build a temple in China is to be appreciated highly. Its not only question of spirituality but also in many other ways both the countries will benefit. There will also be cultural exchange between people living in these two countries and that outcome will help in spiritual and physical growth of citizens of India and China," said Jasraj Maharaj, religious guru in the Swaminarayan Sect.

A core team of the trust is busy preparing the final design plan. Members of the team and the Indo-China Trade Council are expected to visit the proposed temple site soon.

A team of officials from one of China's prestigious construction companies that will execute the project is now in India to study the architecture of Swaminarayan temple.

"China is also very good at construction and especially our company actually focuses on various types of construction designs. I think this being a joint venture with Indian partner, design from India and construction from China, this temple will be the masterpiece," said Xiaojun Lee, Secretary of Board, Panzhihua Guanghua Group, PR China.

The first Hindu temple in the land of dragons will not just be a temple but the hub of cultural exchange between India and China.

[Nectar] The Holy Name as the form of Krishna

Slaughterhouses do have glass windows nowadays

It has been said that if slaughterhouses had glass windows,many people would stop meat eating.It is now possible through video clips,sometimes secretly filmed at these horrible places,and available to all people around the world,who sometimes have ever seen a live cow or a chicken in their life.

The meat comes beautifully packaged in a plastic tray,with beautifully designed photographs for pre-cooked preps.The taste and look of the meat,after many manipulations,appeal to meat-eaters,who,due to false propaganda,believe it is absolutely necessary for proteins and vitamins,otherwise they’ll die of bad nutrition.

In order to see what these video clips are having as effect on the minds of people, I visited youtube and searched: massacre - animal-cows…and in a few secs, the horror place was there,ready to be watched. Anyone who has some feelings should be immediately conscious of the terrible injustice being carried out in such places,where the huge animals are forcibly driven to their end,by means of electric shocks,turned upside down,and have their throats slit by an employee,who repeats this act over and over again.The cow is then thrown,still conscious and moving to an area,where she tries to escape,but keeps slipping on the blood all over the concrete floor. Finally,death is here,and it’s the end of the sufferings.

The muslim way of taking life seems to be more efficient,as the bull is tied up by their feet and the throat is slit with a sharp knife,and after the oozing of blood,seconds after,it’s the end.

What impressed me were the comments given by viewers:about 50% say that they didn’t know about such sufferings…and are thinking about going vegetarian! Many curse the cruelty of the slaughterhouse’s employees,who don’t have any respect for the animals.

The killing of dogs and cats in the Far Eastern countries,for food,make them even wilder,as the torturers believe that the meat taste better when the animals experience fear.

Horse slaughter for export is met with incredibility:how humans have turned into such savages,that even in other countries,do not exist.In order to make maximum profits,the mechanisation of the meat industry has turned men into beasts of the worst kind,for the pleasure of growing population of meat eaters.

I don’t know what devotees think of such type of shock preaching,but personally I think it’s a good way to awaken people from their illusory world of refined eating,as the meat industry took great care to hide their dark secrets from the public till now,with fenced walls and windowless buildings.The crime now is readily available now,within seconds,thanks to this marvellous invention,that can be put into Lord Krishna’s service. India Today Interviews Astronaut Sunita Williams

INDIA, October 15, 2007: On her first visit to India after her record breaking space odyssey, Sunita Williams, whose father, Deepak Pandya originally hailed from Gujarat, wowed audiences across the country with details of her experiences at the International Space Station (ISS). As a female astronaut, she holds the record for the longest space flight (195 days), the highest number of spacewalks (four) and the maximum time spent on spacewalks (29 hours and 17 minutes).

Williams's experience in space has radically altered her perspective of life. From 350 km in orbit, the earth appears a magnificently beautiful whole. She says: "It is hard to imagine people arguing down there, not to mention fighting. It looks so peaceful... so calm down on earth. From space, there are no borders that you can see. We are lucky to live on such a planet and we should not take it for granted. After my space experience, I am a lot more tolerant of people and opinions, of everything."

Television records show her flying around in ISS like Superwoman, her short hair billowing Medusa-like, while proudly taking viewers on a guided tour around her space home. She takes pains to explain that ISS was not some kind of jail in space but as big as a 747 jet that housed just three astronauts. Not to mention the awesome view from the many portholes the spacecraft had.

Williams took with her into space a Deity of Lord Ganesha and a copy of the Bhagavad Gita for company. She had never read the Gita with any depth before her space journey though her father had narrated to her the epics--the Ramayan and the Mahabharat--when she was young. She says: "This may sound a bit corny, but it sort of grounds you. In a little spacecraft zipping around the earth, you are doing a lot of things, sometimes it feels like work... may be you are taking for granted where you are, what you are doing...things like Ganesha, the Gita bring you back home. It is nice to read about Arjuna's trials and tribulations and it puts your life in perspective."

Eating food was an issue, especially the Indian stuff that she liked. She says: "Up there while eating food, you have to have one thing and then the next. You can't put it up on a plate and mix it up because it starts flying all over the place. So it was a problem eating Indian food. I am used to spicy food but some of my Russian colleagues got a little bit red in the face when they ate shahi paneer (cheese in hot sauce)."

Newsweek Editor: America is Not a "Christian" nation

Presidential candidate John McCain was not on the campus of Jerry Falwell's Liberty University last year for very long -- the senator, who once referred to Mr. Falwell and Pat Robertson as "agents of intolerance," was there to receive an honorary degree -- but he seems to have picked up some theology along with his academic hood. In an interview with Beliefnet.com last weekend, Mr. McCain repeated what is an article of faith among many American evangelicals: "the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation."

The only acknowledgment of religion in the original Constitution is a utilitarian one: the document is dated "in the year of our Lord 1787." Even the religion clause of the First Amendment is framed dryly and without reference to any particular faith. The Connecticut ratifying convention debated rewriting the preamble to take note of God's authority, but the effort failed.

A pseudonymous opponent of the Connecticut proposal had some fun with the notion of a deity who would, in a sense, be checking the index for his name: "A low mind may imagine that God, like a foolish old man, will think himself slighted and dishonored if he is not complimented with a seat or a prologue of recognition in the Constitution." Instead, the framers, the opponent wrote in The American Mercury, "come to us in the plain language of common sense and propose to our understanding a system of government as the invention of mere human wisdom; no deity comes down to dictate it, not a God appears in a dream to propose any part of it."

While many states maintained established churches and religious tests for office -- Massachusetts was the last to disestablish, in 1833 -- the federal framers, in their refusal to link civil rights to religious observance or adherence, helped create a culture of religious liberty that ultimately carried the day.

Thomas Jefferson said that his bill for religious liberty in Virginia was "meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and the Mahometan, the Hindu, and infidel of every denomination."  When George Washington was inaugurated in New York in April 1789, Gershom Seixas, the hazan (spiritual teacher) of Shearith Israel, was listed among the city's clergymen (there were 14 in New York at the time) -- a sign of acceptance and respect. The next year, Washington wrote the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, R.I., saying, "happily the government of the United States ... gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance. ... Everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid."

Andrew Jackson resisted bids in the 1820s to form a "Christian party in politics." Abraham Lincoln buried a proposed "Christian amendment" to the Constitution to declare the nation's fealty to Jesus. Theodore Roosevelt defended William Howard Taft, a Unitarian, from religious attacks by supporters of William Jennings Bryan.

The founders were not anti-religion. Many of them were faithful in their personal lives, and in their public language they evoked God. They grounded the founding principle of the nation -- that all men are created equal -- in the divine. But they wanted faith to be one thread in the country's tapestry, not the whole tapestry.

In the 1790s, in the waters off Tripoli, pirates were making sport of American shipping near the Barbary Coast. Toward the end of his second term, Washington sent Joel Barlow, the diplomat-poet, to Tripoli to settle matters, and the resulting treaty, finished after Washington left office, bought a few years of peace. Article 11 of this long-ago document says that "as the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion," there should be no cause for conflict over differences of "religious opinion" between countries.

The treaty passed the Senate unanimously. Mr. McCain is not the only American who would find it useful reading.

A Nation of Christians Is Not a Christian Nation

The Psalmist advises believers to “put not your trust in princes.” The author of Job says that the Lord “shows no partiality to princes nor regards the rich above the poor, for they are all the work of his hands.” Before Pilate, Jesus says, “My kingdom is not of this world.” And if, as Paul writes in Galatians, “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus,” then it is difficult to see how there could be a distinction in God’s eyes between, say, an American and an Australian. In fact, there is no distinction if you believe Peter’s words in the Acts of the Apostles: “I most certainly believe now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears him and does what is right is welcome to him.”

Non-human Molecule Is Absorbed by Eating Red Meat

9/30/2003 -- A non-human, cellular molecule is absorbed into human tissues as a result of eating red meat and milk products, according to a study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, published online the week of September 29, 2003 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The researchers also showed that the same foreign molecule generates an immune response that could potentially lead to inflammation in human tissues.

Several previous studies have linked ingestion of red meat to cancer and heart disease, and possibly to some disorders involving inflammation. However, that research has primarily focused on the role of red-meat saturated fats and on products that arise from cooking. The UCSD study is the first to investigate human dietary absorption of a cell-surface molecular sugar called N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), which is found in non-human mammals. Not produced in humans, Neu5Gc occurs naturally in lamb, pork and beef, the so-called "red meats". Levels are very low or undetectable in fruits, vegetables, hen's eggs, poultry and fish.

Conducting laboratory studies with human tissue, followed by tests in three adult subjects, the UCSD team provided the first proof that people who ingest Neu5Gc absorb some of it into their tissues. In addition, they demonstrated that many humans generate an immune response against the molecule, which the body sees as a foreign invader.

The study's senior author, Ajit Varki, M.D., UCSD professor of medicine and cellular and molecular medicine, and co-director of the UCSD Glycobiology Research and Training Center, said that although it is unlikely that the ingestion of Neu5Gc alone would be primarily responsible for any specific disease, "it is conceivable that gradual Neu5Gc incorporation into the cells of the body over a lifetime, with subsequent binding of the circulating antibodies against Neu5Gc (the immune response), could contribute to the inflammatory processes involved in various diseases."

He added that another potential medical barrier related to Neu5Gc might occur in organ transplantation.

"Over the past decade, the number of patients waiting for organ
transplantation has more than tripled, with little increase in the number of donor organs. This has led to an exploration of using animal organs for transplantation into humans, a process called xenotransplantation," Varki said. "However, the leading donor candidate is the pig, an animal in which Neu5Gc happens to be very common. The current study raises the possibility that human antibodies against Neu5Gc might recognize the Neu5Gc in the pig organ and facilitate its rejection."

In describing the research approach taken by his team, Varki explained that humans do not produce Neu5Gc because they lack the gene responsible for its production. And yet, other researchers have reported small amounts of Neu5Gc in human cancer tissues.

To verify the existence of Neu5Gc in human cancers, Varki's collaborator, Elaine Muchmore, M.D., UCSD professor of medicine and associate chief of staff for education at the San Diego VA Healthcare System, developed an antibody that would be attracted by, and bind to Neu5Gc on tissue samples. The antibody was purified by Pam Tangvoranuntakul, B.S., the study's first author and a Ph.D. student in Varki's lab.

Working with Nissi Varki, M.D., UCSD professor of pathology and medicine, Tangvoranuntakul found that the antibody stained not only human cancers, but also some healthy human tissues. They found that small amounts of Neu5Gc were present in blood vessels and secretory cells, such as the mucous membranes. A further chemical analysis by Sandra Diaz, a Varki research associate, confirmed the presence of Neu5Gc in human tissue.

Meanwhile, an analysis of healthy human tissue by postdoctoral fellow Pascal Gagneux, Ph.D., and Tangvoranuntakul determined that most people had circulating antibodies in the blood that recognized Neu5Gc, and thus could potentially initiate an inflammatory immune response.

In the absence of any known molecular mechanism that would produce Neu5Gc in humans, the group reasoned that the small amounts of Neu5Gc found in human tissue could arise from human ingestion of Neu5Gc in dietary sources. Postdoctoral fellow Muriel Bardor, Ph.D., showed that when human cells in culture were exposed to Neu5Gc, they easily absorbed and incorporated it onto their own surfaces.

However, to study the possibility of dietary absorption, it was necessary to carry out an ingestion study in healthy people. Because the researchers were hesitant to give a potentially harmful substance to humans, Ajit Varki volunteered to be the first subject, followed by Muchmore and Gagneux.

When the three volunteers drank Neu5Gc purified from pork sources and dissolved in water, there were no immediate ill effects. An analysis of the volunteers' urine, blood, serum (the clear liquid that can be separated from clotted blood), hair and saliva, both before ingestion and regularly for several days after, determined that the human body eliminates most of the Neu5Gc, but retains and metabolically absorbs small amounts of the foreign sugar. At approximately two days following ingestion, the Neu5Gc levels were two to three times the baseline level prior to ingestion. By four to eight days following ingestion, the levels had dropped nearly to baseline.

The authors cautioned that a causal relationship between Neu5Gc expression in human tissues with any human disease would be premature and scientifically speculative at best. Instead, they said their findings point to the need for population-level analyses of the presence of Neu5Gc in human tissues in relationship to disease incidence, and the mechanisms of human incorporation and antibody response against this sugar.

The study was supported by grants to Varki from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation. Some human studies were done in the UCSD General Clinical Research Center, which is also supported by the NIH.

Ram Sethu Becomes Tourist Attraction

RAMESHWARAM, TAMIL NADU, INDIA, September 30, 2007: With Ram Sethu (Adam's Bridge) issue in the eye of a political storm, the 48-km bridge has become a tourist attraction and a must see destination for those who coming to the island. Visitors engage four wheelers to reach Dhanushkodi from here as road connectivity was lost in the 1964 cyclone. From there they will hire country crafts to reach the sand dunes. Ever since NASA came out with the picture of Ram Sethu, pilgrims and tourists who visit this island are eager to see the Sethu. But after protests over the Sethu Samudram cannal project, it has become very popular.

"In the early 19th century people used to go up to Ram Sethu to perform rites for their forefathers. The practice was stopped and pilgrims offered puja at Dhanushkodi or Arichalmunai, the confluence of Indian Ocean (Gulf of Mannar) and Bay of Bengal (Palk strait). Now pilgrims are eager to see the bridge, believed to be constructed by Lord Ram, said Athi, a hotelier here, who is also owns a fishing boat.

Ram Sethu had been used by people of Ramanathapuram district and Sri Lanka to cross the sea till 15th century. But as the sea level increased, a part of it had become deeper and people could not cross. Following increase in the number of tourists and pilgrims the jeep fare from here to Dhanushkodi had increased from Rs 700 to Rs 1000 for a trip, Krishna Gupta, a visitor to the Dhanushkodi said. He also wanted the government to regulate the jeep operation to Dhanushkodi. Though there was a ban to visit Rama Sethu following the dredging work for the project and movement of refugees from Sri Lanka, officials were not strict now.

LALU AND KALU

Lalu and Kalu refused to learn anything. They were just scamps. All they wanted to do was fritter away their lives. So they refused to learn anything. Their father was trying by so many ways to get them educated, and by so many ways they were driving the teachers away by their rascal behaviour. So because the father was wealthy, he proclaimed, "I will give half the wealth of my business to any teacher who can simply educate my two boys in simple arithmetic, because if they can learn how to add up sums, then they can at least later in life do some business. I can give them some part of my business, and they can carry on. But they must at least learn how to add up sums. If they can't do that, then they'll be totally useless to me."
So he proclaimed this, and then one old brahmana came. The brahmana was very old. He had seen a lot of life, and he'd seen many different kinds of bad students, so he was quite experienced. So he said, "Let me give it a try." Unlike all the other teachers, he wasn't acting like a teacher. He decided, "I'll act like I'm the friend of these boys." So then he said, "Boys, let's forget about these lessons and go for a walk." So he took Lalu and Kalu for a walk, and took them out to the field, and there were some cows grazing there.
So then he turned to Lalu and said, "Lalu, I wonder if you could tell me how many legs that cow has." So then Lalu very eagerly said, "Yes. One, two..." he began to count and the teacher was thinking, "Ah, he's learning, very good." But then Kalu put his hand over Lalu's mouth. "Don't say any more! He's trying to trick you! He wants to teach you how to count. Therefore he's asking you how many legs that cow has. Don't say another word." This is the crafty cunningness of the materialist. This Kalu thought he was being so clever in outwitting the teacher, but this cleverness is simply the symptom of his own foolishness, his own rascaldom.
The teacher was trying in so many ways to trick the boys, but they were so clever, so over intelligent, that they avoided any lesson that the teacher tried to get them to take up. So finally, the old brahmana became tired. He said, "Well boys, it's been a hard day. I'm going to take a nap." So they retired in some room. "Let's lay down here and take rest." So the boys pretended to go to sleep. But they waited and when they saw that the teacher was snoring peacefully, they got up and started smoking, because they were rascals. And then the teacher woke up suddenly. The boys very quickly threw the cigarettes out the window and jumped back into bed and pretended that they were sleeping. The teacher looked around and saw smoke in the air, he smelt it. He woke up the boys. "What have you been doing? You've been smoking!" The boys pretended like they were being woken up. "Hm? What are you saying? Smoking? We've been sleeping."
The teacher said, "No no, look. The room is filled with smoke. Obviously you've been smoking." So the boys began to argue with the teacher. "No no. Obviously what has happened is that why we were all sleeping, some person came in here and was smoking. Someone else."
The teacher grabbed their hands and smelt them. "No! I can smell on your fingers cigarette smoke!" Then they boys just persisted, "No no, obviously what has happened is that the man who came in here to smoke placed the cigarettes between our fingers and was holding our hands to his mouth and smoking like that."

Dear Maharaj/ Prabujis/ Matajis,

It is my great pleasure to inform all the devotees of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that a great service opportunity has been offered by the temple authorities of Gambhira, in Puri dham, where Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu spent the final years of His manifested pastimes on this earthly planet. Kasi Mishra's house, also known as Gambhira, and the Radha Kanta math, were both under the care of the Orissa government due to 20 years of litigation. Finally, this litigation problem has been resolved and the management of the institution has been returned to the temple mahanta.

The temple has sustained much damage over the years due to lack of proper maintenance. The whole place is very dirty and the roofs and walls are falling down. The temple roof is also cracking. Additionally, the temple has a lack of proper income for the maintenance of the devotees and for deity puja—and, of course, the more the Gambhira is allowed to deteriorate, the fewer visitors it will have.

At this crucial point, the mahanta of Gambhira has requested ISKCON to extend kind assistence to him in order to protect and maintain this most holy place. Devotees from all over the world come to offer their prayers and obeisances at Gambhira. This is one of the most important places for the followers of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and must be maintained nicely.

Thus, this is a golden opportunity for devotees to render service to this most sacred cause. I request all devotees to kindly donate towards this purpose. There are many things to be fixed at the place. For the time being we have prepared a rough budget, for whatever the most urgent needs are, just to bring the situation up to  survival position. Later on, we will let you know about further opportunities for service in the development of the Gambhira.
