TRANSLATION
Men in the mode of goodness worship the demigods; those in the mode of
passion worship the demons; and those in the mode of ignorance worship
ghosts and spirits.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
In this verse the Supreme Personality of Godhead describes different
kinds of worshipers according to their external activities. According
to scriptural injunction, only the Supreme Personality of Godhead is
worshipable, but those who are not very conversant with, or faithful
to, the scriptural injunctions worship different objects, according to
their specific situations in the modes of material nature. Those who
are situated in goodness generally worship the demigods. The demigods
include Brahma, Siva and others such as Indra, Candra and the sun-god.
There are various demigods. Those in goodness worship a particular
demigod for a particular purpose. Similarly, those who are in the mode
of passion worship the demons. We recall that during the Second World
War a man in Calcutta worshiped Hitler because thanks to that war he
had amassed a large amount of wealth by dealing in the black market.

Similarly, those in the modes of passion and ignorance generally
select a powerful man to be God. They think that anyone can be
worshiped as God and that the same results will be obtained.
Now, it is clearly described here that those who are in the mode of
passion worship and create such gods, and those who are in the mode of
ignorance, in darkness, worship dead spirits. Sometimes people worship
at the tomb of some dead man. Sexual service is also considered to be
in the mode of darkness. Similarly, in remote villages in India there
are worshipers of ghosts. We have seen that in India the lower-class
people sometimes go to the forest, and if they have knowledge that a
ghost lives in a tree, they worship that tree and offer sacrifices.

These different kinds of worship are not actually God worship. God
worship is for persons who are transcendentally situated in pure
goodness. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam (4.3.23) it is said, sattvam
visuddham vasudeva-sabditam: "When a man is situated in pure goodness,
he worships Vasudeva." The purport is that those who are completely
purified of the material modes of nature and who are transcendentally
situated can worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The impersonalists are supposed to be situated in the mode of
goodness, and they worship five kinds of demigods. They worship the
impersonal Visnu form in the material world, which is known as
philosophized Visnu. Visnu is the expansion of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, but the impersonalists, because they do not ultimately
believe in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, imagine that the Visnu
form is just another aspect of the impersonal Brahman; similarly, they
imagine that Lord Brahma is the impersonal form in the material mode
of passion. Thus they sometimes describe five kinds of gods that are
worshipable, but because they think that the actual truth is
impersonal Brahman, they dispose of all worshipable objects at the
ultimate end. In conclusion, the different qualities of the material
modes of nature can be purified through association with persons who
are of transcendental nature.

"Eternal time is the witness of all our actions, good and bad, and thus resultant reactions are destined by Him. It is no use saying that we do not know why and for what we are suffering. We may forget the misdeed for which we may suffer at this present moment, but we must remember that Paramatma is our constant companion, and therefore He knows everything, past, present and future. And because the Paramatma feature of Lord Krsna destines all actions and reactions, He is the supreme controller also. Without His sanction not a blade of grass can move. The living beings are given as much freedom as they deserve, and misuse of that freedom is the cause of suffering. The devotees of the Lord do not misuse their freedom, and therefore they are the good sons of the Lord. Others, who misuse freedom, are put into miseries destined by the eternal kala. The kala offers the conditioned souls both happiness and miseries. It is all predestined by eternal time. As we have miseries uncalled-for, so we may have happiness also without being asked, for they are all predestined by kala. No one is therefore either an enemy or friend of the Lord. Everyone is suffering and enjoying the result of his own destiny. This destiny is made by the living beings in course of social intercourse. Everyone here wants to lord it over the material nature, and thus everyone creates his own destiny under the supervision of the Supreme Lord. He is all-pervading and therefore He can see everyone's activities. And because the Lord has no beginning or end, He is known also as the eternal time, kala." (Srimad Bhagavatam. 1:8:28.)

THE HARVEST

There was once a spider who lived in a cornfield. He was a big spider and he had spun a beautiful web between the corn stalks. He got fat eating all the bugs that would get caught in his web. He liked his home and planned to stay there for the rest of his life.

One day the spider caught a little bug in his web, and just as the spider was about to eat him, the bug said, "If you let me go I will tell you something important that will save your life."
The spider paused for a moment and listened because he was amused. "You better get out of this cornfield," the little bug said, "The harvest is coming!"

The spider smiled and said, "What is this harvest you are talking about? I think you are just telling me a story." But the little bug said, "Oh no, it is true. The owner of this field is coming to harvest it soon. All the stalks will be knocked down and the corn will be gathered up. You will be killed by the giant machines if you stay here."

The spider said, "I don't believe in harvests and giant machines that knock down corn stalks. How can you prove this?"

The little bug continued, "Just look at the corn. See how it is planted in rows? It proves this field was created by an intelligent designer."

The spider laughed and mockingly said, "This field has evolved and has nothing to do with a creator. Corn always grows that way."

The bug went on to explain, "Oh no. This field belongs to the owner who planted it, and the harvest is coming soon."

The spider grinned and said to the little bug, "I don't believe you," and then the spider ate the little bug for lunch.

A few days later, the spider was laughing about the story the little bug had told him. He thought to himself, "A harvest! What a silly idea. I have lived here all of my life and nothing has ever disturbed me. I have been here since these stalks were just a foot off the ground, and I'll be here for the rest of my life, because nothing is ever going to change in this field. Life is good, and I have it made."

The next day was a beautiful sunny day in the cornfield. The sky above was clear and there was no wind at all. That afternoon as the spider was about to take a nap, he noticed some thick dusty clouds moving toward him.

He could hear the roar of a great engine and he said to himself, "I wonder what that could be?"

Sharing some Inter-Faith:

Have You Tasted My Jesus by: Mark Dunn

At the University of Chicago Divinity School each year, they have what is called "Baptist Day". It is a day when all the Baptists in the area are invited to the school.

On this day each one is to bring a lunch to be eaten outdoors in a grassy picnic area. Every "Baptist Day" the school would invite one of the greatest minds to lecture in the theological education center.

One year they invited Dr. Paul Tillich. Dr. Tillich spoke for two and one-half hours proving that the resurrection of Jesus was false. He quoted scholar after scholar and book after book. He concluded that since there was no such thing as the historical resurrection, the religious tradition of the church was groundless, emotional mumbo-jumbo, because it was based on a relationship with a risen Jesus, who, in fact, never rose from the dead in any literal sense. He then asked if there were any questions.

After about 30 seconds, an old, dark-skinned preacher with a head of short-cropped, woolly white hair stood up in the back of the auditorium.

"Docta Tillich, I got one question," he said as all eyes turned toward him.

He reached into his sack lunch and pulled out an apple and began eating it.

"Docta Tillich ..." CRUNCH, MUNCH ... "My question is a simple question, "CRUNCH, MUNCH ..."Now I ain't never read them books you read..."CRUNCH, MUNCH ... "and I can't recite the Scriptures in the original Greek..."CRUNCH, MUNCH ... "I don't know nothin' about Niebuhr and Heidegge..."CRUNCH, MUNCH ... He finished the apple.

"All I wanna know is:
This apple I just ate - was it bitter or sweet?" Dr. Tillich paused for a moment and answered in exemplary scholarly fashion: "I cannot possibly answer that question, for I haven't tasted your apple.

"The white-haired preacher dropped the core of his apple into his crumpled paper bag, looked up at Dr. Tillich and said calmly, "Neither have you tasted my Jesus."

The 1,000 plus in attendance could not contain themselves. The auditorium erupted with applause and cheers. Dr. Tillich thanked his audience and promptly left the platform.

Have you tasted Jesus? In Psalms 34:8 we read: "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him." If you have, rejoice in the hope of the resurrection that your faith in Him brings.

MORAL:
Anthropological, academic or theoretical speculations are not enough.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

"Whatever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve."
Napoleon Hill

Fact is; even if the mind cannot conceive of it, one can, by the Grace of the Lord achive.

Hundred-Ton Granite Block Worshiped
Source: India Tribune

BANGALORE, INDIA, May 26, 2001: A 40-foot long green granite block weighing
100 tons destined for carving into a statue of Lord Hanuman fell off its
96-wheel trailer onto the roadside while negotiating a turn near Bangalore.
Upon learning the huge stone's sacred destiny, the local villagers
immediately began worshipping it. The popularity of the stone is such that
thousands now visit it, boosting substantially the local businesses. It took
50 days to get the stone on the trailer in the first place, and the owners
have yet to decide whether or not to try to load it up again. The block
required 18 months to carve from a larger block located in a farmer's field.

Absolute Faith:

A milk maid used to supply mild to a brahmin priest living on the other side of a river. Owing to the irregularities of the boat service, she could not supply him milk punctually every day. Once, being rebuked for her going late, the poor woman said, "What can I do? I start early from the house, but have to wait for a long time at the river bank for the boatman and the passenger." The priest said, "Woman ! they cross the ocean of life by uttering the 'name' of God, and can't you cross this little river?" The simple-hearted woman became very glad at heart on learning this easy means of crossing the river. From the next day the milk began to be supplied early in the morning. One day the priest said to the woman, "How is it that you are no longer late now-a-days?"
She said, "I cross the river by uttering the name of the lord as you told me to do, and don't stand now in need of a boatman." The priest could not believe this. He said, "Can you show me how you cross the river?" The woman took him with her and began to walk over the water. Looking behind the woman saw the priest in a sad plight and said, "How is it, Sir, that you are uttering the name of the God with your mouth, but at the same time with your hands you are trying to keep your cloth untouched by water? Your do not fully rely on Him." Entire resignation and absolute faith in God are at the root or all miraculous deeds.

Crispy Baked Potatoes - The Scottish Way

Ingredients:
-potatoes of equal size, preferably organic
-sea salt
-olive oil
-butter, salt and pepper to taste

Method:
-Pre-heat oven 400F/200C or gas mark 6. To appreciate
the full flavour, choose organic potatoes. Choose equal
sized potatoes large enough to bake - you will need
potatoes that are large enough to scoop out the centres and refill.

-Clean the potatoes and wipe dry thoroughly using
kitchen roll or a clean teacloth. Pierce the potatoes 3 - 4 stabs.
-Sprinkle sea salt on a tray.
-Rub some olive oil on your hands. Roll potatoes in oil
then roll in the salt on the tray.
-Place on a lightly oiled baking tray and bake for
approximately 1 hour. Test the potatoes with a skewer
on the half hour (turn if necessary).(As an alternative,
you may thread the potatoes onto a skewer and place on
the top oven shelf.)
-When ready, cut the potatoes in half, leave for a few
seconds to set, then scoop out the soft centre, placing it
in a bowl. Add fresh butter, salt & freshly milled black
pepper to taste. Mix and pile back into the shells. Serve
with fresh coriander and a light salad.

Cajun Burgers

This recipe is from "Meatless Burgers," by Louise Hagler.

This cookbook is available at Amazon.com .

Red beans and rice are a staple in the Cajun
country of Louisiana and are well-liked all over the South.
Using brown rice flour makes it easy to put together a red
bean and rice burger.

3/4 cup brown rice flour
1/2 cup chopped cabbage
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon Hing
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. With a spoon or your
hands, mix all the ingredients together until well blended,
and form into burgers. Arrange the burgers on an oiled
baking sheet, and bake for 15 minutes on each side until
browned.

HERB GARDEN COUSCOUS AND BLACK BEAN SALAD
Serves: 6 (or one hungry brahmacharin)

This substantial salad is reminiscent of tabouleh, a Middle Eastern grain salad.

Ingredients:
1 cup uncooked couscous
16-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 large stalk celery, diced
1 small red bell pepper, diced
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1/4 cup chopped green olives
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

In a large heatproof container, combine the couscous with water. Cover,
let stand for 15 minutes, then uncover and fluff with a fork. Let cool
until just warm and stir in the remaining ingredients. Cover and
refrigerate for one hour before serving.

VARIATION: In place of mint and dill, try a combination of fresh herbs
such as oregano, thyme and basil.

*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Spinach, Black Bean and Corn Quesadillas
with Pico de Gallo

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 15 oz. can black beans, drained
1 10 oz. package frozen spinach, thawed
1 cup frozen corn, thawed
1/4 cup fresh cilantro (coriander leaves), chopped
1 tsp. ground cumin
6 - 8 flour tortillas
2 cups cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, grated

Heat olive oil in a skillet and add black beans, spinach, corn, cilantro and cumin. Cook for several minutes. Spoon onto one side of each flour tortilla and sprinkle with cheese. Fold over and place back in skillet over low heat just long enough to melt cheese. Slice in half and serve with Pico de Gallo.

Pico de Gallo (our alternate version)

2 cups Roma tomatoes, chopped
1 small cabbage chopped (couple of handfuls) and sauted in 2 tsps hing and water paste
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
2 serrano or jalapeno chiles, seeded and chopped
1/3 cup flat Ginger beer
1 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
Salt to taste

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Allow to sit for a couple of hours before serving to allow flavors to blend. We do not put our salsas in the refrigerator because tomatoes hate the refrigerator and you will lose lots of the flavor.

Last week we were invited to the home of some old friends for a chat.

My buddy preceded every request to his wife by endearing terms,
calling her Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc.

I was so impressed since the couple had been married almost
70 years, and while the wife was off in the kitchen I said to my friend,
"I think it's wonderful that after all the years you've been married, you still
call your wife those pet names."

My buddy hung his head and said, "To tell you the truth, I forgot her name
about ten years ago."

Well, When Moses was on earth back then he was given the Ten Commandments
but he was not told actually what he should do with them.

He took them to Africa and confronted a man and asked, "Would You Like A
Commandment?"

The man replied, "What's A Commandment?"

Moses took a tablet and read, "Thou Shalt Not Steal!"

The man replied, "Go away, we don't want any of that here!"

Moses went to England and confronted a man with the same question, "Would
You Like A Commandment?"

The man replied, "What's A Commandment?"

Moses took a tablet and read, "Thou shalt not kill!"

The man replied, "Get outta here, we don't want any of that here!"

Moses then went to America and confronted a man with the same question,
"Would You Like A Commandment?"

The man replied, "What's A Commandment?"

Moses took a tablet and read, "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery!"
The man replied, "Go away, we don't want any of that here!"

And so Moses went on his way around the world always getting the same
response until he arrived in Jerusalem.

Moses confronted a Jew with the same question, "Would You Like A
Commandment?"

The Jew replied, "How Much Are They?"

Moses replied, "Well....They're Free!"

The Jew replied, "THEN I'LL TAKE TEN!"

WHEN THEY BUILT ROME

Mrs. Patel, aka "Vindaloo" for her tear-jerking heat she kept on the class,
asked her 5th grade history class, "When was Rome built?" and called on
young Tyagaraj to answer first.

"Rome was built at night." was his answer.

"At night?" asked Mrs. Patel, holding her ruler firmly in her boney-knuckled
hands. "How in the three worlds did you get such an idea?"

"Well," gulped the student, hoping his answer would satisfy her,
"...everyone knows Rome wasn't built in a day."

A man approached a local in a village he was visiting.

"What's the quickest way to Auckland?"

The local scratched his head. "Are you walking or driving?" he asked the stranger.
"I'm driving."

"That's the quickest way, then!"

Psychologist in Court

One day at a trial, an eminent psychologist was called to testify. A severe no nonsense professional, she sat down in the witness chair unaware that it's rear legs were set precariously on the back of the raised platform.

"Will you state your name?" asked the district attorney.

Tilting back in her chair she opened her mouth to answer, but instead catapulted head-over-heels backward and landed in a stack of exhibits and recording equipment.

Everyone watched in stunned silence as she extricated herself, rearranged her dishevelled dress and hair and was re-seated on the witness stand. The glare she directed at onlookers dared anyone to so much as smirk.

"Well, doctor," continued the district attorney without even changing
expression, "...we could start with an easier question."

"Hmmph!" - says the devotee looking very irritated.

"........And what are people supposed to call me now then?"

One day my god-brother noticed an Indian elderly lady slowly pushing a cart
through the supermarket parking lot. Ever courteous, he rushed over and
insisted on taking it over for her.

The woman struggled a while and then ran alongside, doing her best to keep up.
At the entrance, he said, "Here you go, Mataji," and gave her the cart back.
Catching her breath, she said, "Thank you, ....but I was only using it as a crutch
to lean on."

lettered another sign which read, "THOAP!"
