BHAGAVAD-GITA 10:25
maharsinam bhrgur aham
giram asmy ekam aksaram
yajnanam japa-yajno 'smi
sthavaranam himalayah
WORD FOR WORD
maha-rsinam--among the great sages;
bhrguh--Bhrgu; aham--I am;
giram--of vibrations; asmi--I am;
ekam aksaram--pranava; yajnanam--of
sacrifices; japa-yajnah--chanting;
asmi--I am; sthavaranam--of
immovable things; himalayah--the Himalayan
mountains.
TRANSLATION
Of the great sages I am Bhrgu; of
vibrations I am the transcendental
om. Of sacrifices I am the chanting
of the holy names [japa], and of
immovable things I am the Himalayas.
PURPORT
Brahma, the first living creature
within the universe, created several
sons for the propagation of various
kinds of species. Among these
sons, Bhrgu is the most powerful sage.
Of all the transcendental
vibrations, the om (omkara) represents
Krsna. Of all sacrifices, the
chanting of Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna,
Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama,
Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is
the purest representation of
Krsna. Sometimes animal sacrifices
are recommended, but in the
sacrifice of Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna,
there is no question of
violence. It is the simplest and the
purest. Whatever is sublime in
the worlds is a representation of
Krsna. Therefore the Himalayas, the
greatest mountains in the world, also
represent Him. The mountain
named Meru was mentioned in a previous
verse, but Meru is sometimes
movable, whereas the Himalayas are
never movable. Thus the Himalayas
are greater than Meru.

The Magic of Krishna's Flute
(Plate 9 of 16)
O rare voice, which is a spell Unto
all on earth who dwell!
O rich voice of rapturous love, Making
melody above!
Krishna's, Hari's one in two, Sound
these mortal verses through! Sound
like that soft flute which made Such
a magic in the shade Calling
deer-eyed maidens nigh, Waking wish
and stirring sigh, Thrilling blood
and melting breasts, Whispering love's
divine unrests.
This is an illustration of the following
lines from Canto VIII of the
Gita Govinda:
antarmohan amaulighur nanachalan mandaravibhram
sana stambhakar
shanadrip tiharshana mahamantrah kurangidrisam
dripyaddana vaduyama
nadivishad durvaraduh khapadam bhramsah
kamsaripor vipolayatu vah
sreyamsi vamsiravah
"The sound of Krishna's flute charms
the entire creation, animate as
well as inanimate. The deer-eyed gopis
of Vraja are so fascinated
"herewith that mandara flowers which
decorate their coiffure fall. May
the sound of Krishna's flute, the
enemy of Kamsa and saviour of gods,
bless you all!"

DON'T QUIT(Sent in by Tabby)
When things go wrong as they sometimes
will, When the road you're
trudging seems all up hill, When the
funds are low and the debts are
high And you want to smile, but you
have to sigh, When care is pressing
you down a bit, Rest, if you must,
but don't quit.
Life is queer with its twists and
turns, As everyone of us sometimes
learns, And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck
it out, Don't give up though the
pace seems slow, You may succeed with
another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you
are, It may be near when it seems
so far,
So stick to the fight when you're
hardest hit It's when things seem
worst that you must not quit. For
all the sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: "It might have
been!"
- John Greenleaf Whittier

At the height of a political corruption
trial, the prosecuting
attorney attacked a witness. "Isn't
it true," he bellowed, "that
you accepted five thousand dollars
to compromise this case?"
The witness stared out the window,
as though he hadn't heard
the question.
"Isn't it true that you accepted five
thousand dollars to
compromise this case?" the lawyer
repeated.
The witness still did not respond.
Finally, the judge leaned over and
said, "Sir, please answer the
question."
"Oh," the startled witness said, "Sorry,
I thought he was talking
to you."

"I've been lost for about three weeks

A man is struck by a bus on a busy
New York City street. He lies
dying on the sidewalk as a crowd of
spectators gathers around. "A
priest. Somebody get me a priest!"
the man gasps. A policeman
checks the crowd - no priest, no minister,
no man of God of any
kind.
"A PRIEST, PLEASE!" the dying man says
again. Then out of the
crowd steps a little old Jewish man
of at least eighty years of age.
"Mr. Policeman," says the man, "I'm
not a priest. I'm not even a
Catholic. But for fifty years now
I've lived behind St. Mary's Catholic
Church on Third Avenue, and every
night I've listened to the
Catholic litany. Maybe I can be of
some comfort to this man."
The policeman agreed and brought the
octogenarian over to where
the dying man lay. He kneels down,
leans over the injured and says
in a solemn voice:
"B - 4. I - 19. N - 38. G - 54. O - 72. - Housie!!!"

This is a joke told by Dave Allen
on one of his shows
(British program 'Dave Allen at Large').
A drunk leaves a bar and decides to
take a shortcut through a graveyard. It is raining heavily and very dark.
The drunk fails to see an open grave and falls into it. He tries to climb
out of it, but it is too deep and the rain has turned the dirt to mud and
has made it too slippery to climb. He gives up after a while and decides
to spend the night there.
A while later, another drunk leaves
the same bar and decides to take the same shortcut through the graveyard.
He, too, falls into that open grave and tries to climb out but the mud is too slippery. The first drunk is still sitting there and watches as the other drunk tries but fails to get out.
The first drunk stands up, taps the second drunk on the shoulder and tells him, "You'll never get out!"
He did.

This comes from A.R. Narayanan
in Hinduism Today
http://www.hinduism-today.com/2000/7/#gen400
Hybrid Religion
Christianity in India, previously symbolized by the cross, candles and chalice at the altar, has given way to the traditional lamps and puja utensils of Hindu temples. Christian choirs have shifted from the Western music to carnatic and Hindustani ragas. There is a church on a hill top in the plains of Kerala, accessible throughout the year, where the devotees scale up the hill with irumudikkettu offerings on their heads, mocking the Sabarimala devotees of Lord Ayappan. This recent effort may be to solicit the wavering among the Hindus. Else, why should the church that existed in Kerala for two millennia with its conventional methods and traditional ritualistic aids kept close to heart by every Christian throughout generations choose now to Hinduize in the name of Indianization? I think it's simple. Christians see the divine refulgence that Hinduism radiates and desire to be a part of it.
