"O Brahma, whatever appears to be
of any value, if it is without relation
to Me, has no reality. Know it as
My illusory energy, that reflection which
appears to be in darkness." (Srimad
Bhagavatam. 2:9:34.)
"And as such, whenever there is forgetfulness
of this prime relation with
the Lord, and whenever things are
accepted as real without being related to
the Lord, that conception is called
a product of the illusory energy of the
Lord." (Srimad Bhagavatam. 2:9:34.)

"The Vedic process does not involve
research work. In mundane
scholarship, we have to show our academic
learning by some research,
but the Vedic process is different.
In the Vedic process the research
work is already done; it is complete,
and it is simply handed down by
disciplic succession from teacher
to student. There is no question of
research work because the instruments
and the means with which one
conducts such research work are blunt
and imperfect.
At this stage of our material existence,
we are conditioned by many
laws of nature. All conditioned souls
are subject to four defects
due to the imperfection of their senses.
One defect is that the
conditioned soul is certain to commit
mistakes. There is no man
who does not commit mistakes. In India,
for instance, Mahätmä Gandhi
was supposed to be a very great personality,
but he also committed
mistakes. Five minutes before he came
to the meeting at which he was
killed, he was warned by confidential
associates not to go, but he
persisted. To commit mistakes is very
natural in the conditioned
state of life. Indeed, the popular
saying has arisen: “To err is
human.”
Another imperfection of the conditioned
soul is that he is sure to
be illusioned. Being illusioned means
accepting something which
is not, phantasmagoria to be factual.
Every one of us is under the
impression that we are these bodies,
but actually we are not.
Accepting the body to be the self
is called illusion, or mäyä. The
third imperfection is that conditioned
souls have a tendency to
cheat. We have often heard a storekeeper
say, “Because you are
my friend, I won’t make any profit
off you.” But in actuality we
know that he is making at least 50%
profit. There are so many
instances of this cheating propensity.
There are also many examples
of teachers who actually know nothing
but put forth theories in
words like “perhaps” or “it may be,”
while in actuality they
are simply cheating their students.
The fourth imperfection is
that the senses of the living entity
are not perfect. Our vision
is so limited that we cannot see very
far away nor very near. The
eye can see only under certain conditions,
and therefore it is
understood that our vision is limited.
Similarly, all our other
senses are also limited. It is not
possible to understand the
unlimited by these imperfect, limited
senses. The conclusion
is that the Vedic process does not
encourage us to endeavor to
learn the Absolute Truth by employing
our present senses, which
are conditioned in so many ways. If
we are to have knowledge,
it must come from a superior source
which is not conditioned
by these four imperfections. That
source is Krsna. He is the
supreme authority of Bhagavad-gitä,
and He is accepted as the
perfect authority by so many saints
and sages.
Those who are serious students of
Vedic literature accept
authority. Bhagavad-gitä, for
example, is not a scholarly
presentation which arose out of so
much research work. It is
perfect knowledge that was taught
by Lord Krsna to Arjuna on
the battlefield of Kurukshetra, and
we receive information from
it that in previous ages Shri Krsna
also taught it to the
sun-god Vivasvän, and it was
handed down from time immemorial
from Vivasvän by disciplic succession".(A.C.
Bhaktivedanta
Swami Prabhupada. Elevation to KC.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
"Completely rejecting all religious
activities which are materially
motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds
the highest truth, which
is understandable by those devotees
who are fully pure in heart. The
highest truth is reality distinguished
from illusion for the welfare
of all. Such truth uproots the threefold
miseries. . ." (Srimad
Bhagavatam 1:1:2. text.)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"As stated in the beginning of the
Srimad-Bhagavatam, this great
transcendental literature is the ripened
fruit of the tree of Vedic
knowledge, and therefore ALL QUESTIONS
that can be humanly possible
regarding the universal affairs, beginning
from its creation, ARE ALL
ANSWERED in the Srimad-Bhagavatam.
The answers depend only on the
qualification of the person who explains
them." (Srimad Bhag. 2:9:46)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Srimad-Bhagavatam is the literary
incarnation of God, and it is
compiled by Srila Vyasadeva, the incarnation
of God. It is meant for
the ultimate good of all people, and
it is all-successful, all-blissful
and all-perfect." (Srimad Bhagavatam.
1:3:40.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Words from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakura
1. We are put to test and trial
in this world. Only those who attend
the kirtana
of the devotees can succeed.
2. Every spot on earth where
discourses on God are held is a place
of pilgrimage.
3. Possession of objects not
related to Krsna is our main malady.
4. Let me not desire anything
but the highest good for my worst
enemies.
5. As dalliance with the body
in luxury increases, so wanes the
spirit of
service of the Lord.
6. Those favored by God find
their paths set by thorns.
7. There is no peace or happiness
in our worldly life. Circumstances
create turmoil
and annoyance.
8. Chant the mahamantra loudly
and with attachment. This will drive
away inertia,
worldly evils and pests.
9. Be indifferent to bazaar
gossips, stick firmly to your cherished
goals, no
lack or impediments of the world will ever stand in your
way.
10. Pay due respects to the extroverts
of the world, but do not be
appreciative
of their manners and conduct. They are to be shaken
off from
your mind.
11. A devotee feels the presence of
God everywhere, but one averse to
the Lord
denies His existence anywhere.
12. You cannot appreciate transcendental
matters with the reasoning of
the
world. It is sheer nonsense to decry them with the measuring
stick
of your intellect.
13. To recite the name of Sri Krsna
is bhakti.
14. Life is for the glorification
of topics on Hari. If that is stopped,
then what need
is there to carry on life.
15. Physical illness with Hari-bhajana
is preferred to physical fitness
without Hari-bhajana.
16. Our span of life on earth is short.
Our life will be crowned with
success if
the body wears out with constant discourses on Hari.
17. We are here on earth not to work
as artisans for making big
buildings
with wood and stone but to work only as messengers for
the teachings
of Sri Caitanya Deva.
18. A sycophant is neither a guru
or a preacher.
19. To transform the adverse desires
of the jivas is the supreme duty
of the most
merciful. To rescue one person from the stronghold of
Mahamaya
is an act of superb benevolence, far superior to opening
innumerable
hospitals.
20. Unless we are devoted to God,
secularism shall not leave us.
21. Look within. Amend yourself, rather
than pry into the frailities of
others.
22. In this world of Maya, averse
to the Lord, full of trials and
tribulations,
only patience, humility and respect for others are
our friends
for Hari-bhajana.
23. The Lord, Gaurasundara, puts His
devotees in various difficulties
and associations
to test their patience and strength of mind.
Success depends
on their good fortune.
24. When faults in others misguide
and delude you - have patience,
introspect,
find faults in yourself. Know that others cannot harm
you unless
you harm yourself.
25. I wish that every selfless, tender-hearted
person of Gaudiya Math
will be prepared
to shed two hundred gallons of blood for the
nourishment
of the spiritual corpus of every individual of this
world.

Aloo Achar (Nepal potato salad)
4 medium size waxy boiling potatoes
4 Tbs. ground roasted sesame seeds
3 or 4 Tbs. lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
1 tsp. salt
1 or more hot green chiles, finely
minced (*)
4 Tbs. sesame oil
2 tsp. vegetable oil
pinch ground Asafoetida (Hing) (**)
8 to 10 whole fenugreek seeds (Methi)
(**)
3 Tbs. cilantro (Chinese parsley)
minced
(*) Use as many chiles, like jalapenos,
as you can stand. If you
can't tolerate hot, spicy food, 2
or 3 Tbs. green bell pepper
can be substituted. (**) Look for
these in an Indian or
Middle-Eastern grocery
Boil the potatoes in a big pot. Meanwhile,
combine the chiles
(or green pepper), salt, lemon juice
and ground roasted sesame
seeds in a non-metallic bowl. (By
the way, roasted sesame seeds
can be found as "iri goma" in Oriental
markets. I don't know if
you can get them already ground up.)
Add the sesame oil just a
little at a time and mix in with a
wire whisk.
Using a metal ladle or a small butter
warmer, heat the vegetable
oil by holding it over heat. When
quite hot, add the asafoetida
powder and fenugreek seeds. The fenugreek
seeds will start to
darken in the hot oil in just a few
seconds... when this happens
dump it all into the bowl. Mix well,
then add the cilantro
(Chinese parsley) and mix some more.
Check your seasonings.
When the potatoes are done, drain and
peel while hot (holding
with a fork if you need to.) The peel
should slide right off. Cut
into 3/4" dice and add to the bowl
of dressing. Gently mix to coat
all the cubes and finally adjust your
seasonings if needed. Let
cool, cover and refrigerate. You can
eat this after a couple of
hours, either cold or room temperature.
However, it's supposed
to be much better the next day.
It keeps for up to 4 days refrigerated.

Jaffrey's "World of the East Vegetarian
Cooking."

BENGALI GREEN BEANS
I made this last week, based on other
Indian green bean dishes
I'd seen, and I must say it was unexpectedly
delicious.
INGREDIENTS:
Peanut oil
Fresh green beans
Bengali 5 spice mixture*
Black mustard seeds
Unsweetened dried, grated coconut
*Bengali 5 spice mixture. A stock spice
in a lot of bengali
cuisine. You make it by mixing equal
quantities of *whole* seeds
of: (1) cumin seeds, (2) fennel seeds,
(3) fenugreek seeds, (4)
yellow mustard seeds, (5) kalunji
seeds. (All but the last are
readily available. Kalunji seeds can
be found in Indian groceries,
or in some Middle Eastern groceries;
they are sometimes called
'black onion seeds', kala jeera, or
'nigella' even though they
are not related to the onion at all.
A teaspoon of each spice will
fill a small spice bottle if you plan
on cooking other Bengali dishes.)
RECIPE: Wash and trim the green beans. Cut them into half lengths.
Heat 3 or 4 tablespoons of peanut oil
in a wok to medium-high, add
a tablespoon or so of black
mustard seeds, and continue heating
until they start to pop. Add a tablespoon
or so of Bengali 5 Spice,
and let it cook until you notice the
cumin getting a few shades
darker. (You want the seeds to darken
but not burn.)
Add in the beans and "stir fry" them
in the spiced oil for some
minutes. Add in about a 1/2 teaspoon
of the coconut, continue to
cook beans. After some minutes, when
the beans are about half
cooked, add 1/4-1/3 cup of water,
and a tablespoon or so of
coconut, and let the water boil away,
steaming the beans as it
does. Stir the beans so that they
don't remain in the water too long.
You want to time it so that the beans
are just about cooked
when the water evaporates. They should
be al dente. (Continue
stir frying after the water is gone
if they are not yet done.)
Take the beans off the heat, add salt
to taste. Add more coconut
to taste, a little at a time.

PUMPLIN BLOSSOMS / flowers: dipped in batter and deep fried
Author to thank: Shankar Bhattacharyya
Grind some purple mustard in a coffee
grinder. Make a thick slurry
with water. Add some fresh, finely
minced hot pepper, preferably
cayenne or Thai. Perhaps a pinch
or two of salt. Use this slurry
as a stuffing for the pumpkin flowers,
spreading it on as you might
use jam or jelly on bread. More than
a shmear, perhaps a serious
shmear. Fold the end over so as to
keep the stuffing intact.
Then dip the flowers in batter, and
fry. You can deep fry this,
or you can pan fry it in a more modest
amount of oil.
They are now ready to offer and Eat.
Be prepared to have the
back of your head fly off.
If you like, serve as a semi-major
side dish, with rice and
a simple dal.
The pepper is for flavour, not for
heat. Properly done, this
is plenty hot on its own.

BENGALI MANGO LASSI
...AND NOW THERE ARE SO MANY MANGOES IN THE SHOPS...and cheap.
How about the classic Indian beverage
called Lassi? Lassi comes
in two distinct varieties...sweet
and salty. The salty version
is really a foreign taste for the
average western palate!!!
The basic recipe for a sweet lassi
includes drops of rose essence
instead of fruit, but our favorite
is a classic Bengali mango
lassi. As some of you would know,
there are literally hundreds
of mango varieties are available there
at this time of year.
Here's how we make mango lassi.....
You can use a blender for this though
we use an appliance called
the Asia Kitchen Machine.
If you keep your mangoes soaking in
cool water overnight they
will have a cooling effect on your
body, but when they are left
to sit at room temperature they heat
the body.
Take a ripe mango (I mean really ripe
and a bit soft - fruity in
aroma) and gently roll it on the countertop
to pulverize the
flesh inside. Carefully open
the skin of the mango over a bowl
and remove the flesh by hand - gooey!!
The inside of the skin
can be scraped with a spoon to remove
strings of flesh, but do
not scrape the pit or you'll get really
tough fibers in the drink.
Squeeze the pit in your fist and let
the juice and pulp ooze
into the bowl (did I say, "Wash your
hands first?"); and repeat
several times trying hard not to launch
the pit across the room,
but rather to get as much of the fruit
into the bowl as possible.
Next add 2 cups of yogurt, 1/2 cup
good water and 3TBS of sugar
to the bowl.
Crush or shave a cup of ice in the
appliance of your choice
and add to the bowl. Pour the
whole thing into the blender and
whip, or use an electric mixer on
the highest speed. The trick
here is to incorporate as much air
as possible to make a frothy
drink.
Vary the relative amounts of yogurt
and water to vary the
thickness of the final product - this
is one I recommend to
practice to get perfect..... you will
become very popular too.

A guy is walking along when suddenly
he got his foot caught stuck
in some railroad tracks. He tried
to get it out but it was really
stuck in there.
Suddenly he heard a noise and turned
around to see a train coming.
He panicked and remembering that he
came from a high class brahmin
family started to pray, "Oh
God, please get my foot out of these
tracks and I'll stop drinking!"
Nothing happened, it was still stuck,
and the train was getting
closer!
He prayed again, this time with deep
emotions "God, please get my
foot out and I'll stop drinking AND
smoking!"
Still nothing.....and the train was just seconds away!
He tried it one more time, "Oh
God, please my Lord, if you get my
foot out of the tracks, I'll quit
drinking, smoking and having sex
with all the women I meet. I'll give
it all up and become a Hare Krishna"
Suddenly his foot shot out of the tracks
and he was able to dive out
of the way, just as the train passed!
He got up, dusted himself off, looked
toward the sky and said
"That was so close, thanks anyway
God, BUT I got it out myself
in the nick of time."

The man then asks if he can talk to him.
"He's busy at the moment," the boy

"Then is your mom there?"
"Yes" the boy whispers.
"Can I talk to her?"
"No, she's busy," the boy whispers.
"Is there anyone else there?"
"Yes" whispered the boy.
"Who?" the man asked.
"A policeman," came the whispered reply.
"Well, can I talk to him?"
"He's busy too," the boy whispered.
"Is there anyone else there then?"
"Yes" whispered the boy.
"Who then?" the man asked.
"A fireman," the boy whispered.
"Can I talk to him?"
"No," the boy whispered, "he's busy."
Annoyed, the man in frustration asked
what they were all doing.
"Looking for me." the boy whispered,
and put the phone down.

he said, "God is

ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice
\/ for all.
Amen!"
Along with the laughter from
the other customers nearby, I heard a
woman remark, "That's what's
wrong with this country. Kids today
don't even know how to pray.
Asking God for ice-cream. Why, I
never!"
Hearing this, my son burst into
tears and asked me, "Did I do it
wrong? Is God mad at me?"
As I held him and assured him
that he had done a terrific job and God
was certainly not mad at him,
an elderly gentleman approached the
table.
He winked at my son and said,
"I happen to know that God thought that
was a great prayer son."
"Really?" my son asked.
"Cross my heart." Then
in a theatrical whisper he added, indicating
the woman whose remark had started
this whole thing, "Too bad she
never asks God for ice cream.
A little ice cream is good for the
soul sometimes."
Naturally, I bought my kids ice
cream at the end of the meal. My son
stared at his for a moment and
then did something I will remember the
rest of my life. He picked
up his sundae and without a word walked
over and placed it in front
of the woman. With a big smile he told
her, "Here, this is for you.
Ice cream is good for the soul
sometimes, and this soul is
good already."

An atheist was spending a quiet day
fishing when suddenly his
boat was attacked by the Loch Ness
monster. In one easy flip,
the beast tossed him and his boat
at least a hundred feet into
the air. The monster then opened its
mouth while waiting below
to swallow man and boat.
As the man sailed head over heels and
started to fall towards
the open jaws of the ferocious beast
he cried out, "Oh, my
God! Help me!"
Suddenly, the scene froze in place.
As the atheist hung in
midair, a booming voice came out of
the clouds and said, "I
thought you didn't believe in Me!"
"Oh God, come on, give me a break!"
the man pleaded, "Just
seconds ago I didn't believe in the
Loch Ness monster either!"
"Well," said God, "now that you are
a believer you must
understand that I don't always work
miracles to snatch you from
certain death in the jaws of the monster,
but I can change
hearts. What would you have me do?"
The atheist thinks for a minute and
then says, "God, please
have the Loch Ness Monster believe
in You also." God replies,
"So be it."
The scene starts in motion again with
the atheist falling
towards the ravenous jaws of the ferocious
beast.
Then the Loch Ness Monster folds his
claws together and says, in a
very medatative manner, "Oh Lord,
please bless this food You have so
graciously provided....."

"IT IS BELIEVED THAT"... I think.
"IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT"...
A couple of others think
so, too.
"CORRECT WITHIN AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE"...
Wrong.
"ACCORD1NG TO STATISTICAL ANALYSIS"...
Rumor has it.
"A STATISTICALLY-ORIENTED PROJECTION

over a glass of beer.
"IT IS CLEAR THAT MUCH ADDITIONAL

understand it
"AFTER ADDITIONAL STUDY BY MY COLLEAGUES"...
They don't
understand it either.
"THANKS ARE DUE TO JOE BLOTZ FOR ASSISTANCE

VALUABLE DISCUSSIONS"... Mr.
Blotz did the work and Ms. Adams explained
to me what it
meant.
"A HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AREA FOR EXPLORATORY

useless topic selected by my committee.
"IT IS HOPED THAT THIS STUDY WILL
