Welcome to the latest edition of the on-line HKSRNewsletter, and our humble attempt to render some service to the devotee community. The format of this newsletter is that of a continuous scroll, please see the table of contents where everything is hyper-linked on-line, we hope it's now easier for you all. This newsletter still goes out to way over 2508 receivers. We trust that all is well with everyone by the Mercy of the Lord. Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 5 -  Karma-yoga : Action in Krsna Consciousness

                          vidya-vinaya-sampanne
                          brahmane gavi hastini
                         suni caiva sva-pake ca
                         panditah sama-darsinah

   WORD FOR WORD

   vidya--with education; vinaya--and gentleness; sampanne--fully
   equipped; brahmane--in the brahmana; gavi--in the cow; hastini--in
   the elephant; suni--in the dog; ca--and; eva--certainly;
   sva-pake--in the dog-eater (the outcaste); ca--respectively;
   panditah--those who are wise; sama-darsinah--who see with equal
   vision.

  TRANSLATION

   The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal
   vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and
   a dog-eater [outcaste].

  PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad

   A Krsna conscious person does not make any distinction between
   species or castes. The brahmana and the outcaste may be different
   from the social point of view, or a dog, a cow, and an elephant may
   be different from the point of view of species, but these
   differences of body are meaningless from the viewpoint of a learned
   transcendentalist. This is due to their relationship to the
   Supreme, for the Supreme Lord, by His plenary portion as Paramatma,
   is present in everyone's heart. Such an understanding of the
   Supreme is real knowledge. As far as the bodies are concerned in
   different castes or different species of life, the Lord is equally
   kind to everyone because He treats every living being as a friend
   yet maintains Himself as Paramatma regardless of the circumstances
   of the living entities. The Lord as Paramatma is present both in
   the outcaste and in the brahmana, although the body of a brahmana
   and that of an outcaste are not the same. The bodies are material
   productions of different modes of material nature, but the soul and
   the Supersoul within the body are of the same spiritual quality.
   The similarity in the quality of the soul and the Supersoul,
   however, does not make them equal in quantity, for the individual
   soul is present only in that particular body whereas the Paramatma
   is present in each and every body. A Krsna conscious person has
   full knowledge of this, and therefore he is truly learned and has
   equal vision. The similar characteristics of the soul and Supersoul
   are that they are both conscious, eternal and blissful. But the
   difference is that the individual soul is conscious within the
   limited jurisdiction of the body whereas the Supersoul is conscious
   of all bodies. The Supersoul is present in all bodies without
   distinction.

Either you surrender to Krsna, or clear it by question

In the evening Prabhupada had an engagement at the home of Mrs. Gopi Kumara Birla and her son, Ashoka. She had invited friends from many of the leading business families in Bombay. The Birlas are possibly the richest, and one of the most influential, families in India. Giriraja had previously suggested to her several possible topics for the evening's discussion, and she has chosen "How to Become Successful in Life."

The Birlas had set up an asana on a side lawn of their large, opulent estate. Next to it, on a table, the devotees placed a shrine with small brass Radha-Krsna Deities.

Srila Prabhupada arrived in the Birla's white Mercedes. He immediately noticed that his seat was placed higher than that of the Deities. So he had the devotees remove the base of the asana, making his seat lower.

Then, above the muted clamor of Bombay's evening traffic, Prabhupada addressed his attentive audience on the evening's topic. "Radharani and Durga, both of them are the prakrtis of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but one prakrti is meant for controlling this material world and the other prakrti is meant for blessing the spiritual world.

"Radharani, the name has come from the word aradhyate. Aradha means worshiping, beginning from Radharani and her expansion Laksmi in Vaikuntha. Here we worship Mother Laksmiji, the goddess of fortune, to receive some favor, but in the Vaikuntha world there are many hundreds of thousands of Laksmis, and with great respect they are engaged in serving the Supreme Lord.

"So, we being expansions of the spiritual Laksmi, or Radharani, our duty is to serve Radharani, and through Radharani serve Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness movement. We are missing this point. That instead of learning from Radharani how to serve Krsna, we are being controlled by the other prakrti, material energy, Durga, with weapons in her ten hands. This is our position."

Prabhupada possesses a unique ability to link anyone from any walk of life to the common goal of spiritual attainment. His preaching is always perfectly suitable for the time, place and circumstance. To the leaders of this wealthy business community he thus offered a pertinent example.

"In this material world they do not know what is the aim of life. Everyone is very much expert to see his interest. Two businessmen, they are agreeing; but everyone is trying to see his personal interest first. This is called svartha-gatim. That is natural. But Prahlada Maharaja says, na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum. Unfortunately, these materialistic persons they do not know what is real interest. The real interest is Visnu, how to serve Visnu."

Prabhupada came directly to the keynote of his address. "The subject matter was how to become successful in life. Krsna comes to instruct this simple truth -- that you are being controlled by the material energy. You give up this business, you be controlled by the spiritual energy, and your life is successful. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said jivera 'svarupa' haya-krsnera 'nitya-dasa'. But our disease is, instead of becoming dasa we are trying to become the master of the prakrti. This is called the materialistic way of life. So that will not make us happy at any stage of our life. The success of the human form of life is to understand this: our relationship with God. And we should act in relationship with God. Then our success of life will be achieved. This is the main purpose of Krsna consciousness movement."

The Birla family have become equally famous for both their religious interests and business ventures, with Birla temples prominent in most Indian major cities. Srila Prabhupada took the evening's opportunity to invite the family to expand from the merely religious to practicing a full transcendental life. "That is Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission," he said. "He wished especially Indians to take this job of preaching the teachings of Bhagavad-gita all over the world. The mission is they must be very, very merciful to all outsiders. That is India's mission. They are in darkness, tamasi, bring them in the light: tamasi ma jyotir gamah. This attempt has been done by us individually with teeny effort but it is becoming successful. But every one of us should become completely aware of this Movement and take this mission."

Srila Prabhupada's speech was direct and frank. "Krsna said, 'You just offer a little flower and water to Me.' If you think that, 'We have got money, the money is for my enjoyment, and Krsna may be offered a little water and flower,' that is cheating. That is not good. According to your position you must worship. This is wanted. To become very big businessman is not ordinary thing; it requires tapasya, very great labor, brain, yat tapasyasi. But the result, Krsna says, kurusva mad-arpanam. He's asking, 'Give it to Me.' So there is no harm to become very big businessman, earning money. That is all right. But you give it to Krsna. Then in any position you can remain Krsna conscious. And if you remain Krsna conscious, then you will understand Krsna."

Winding up his lecture, Prabhupada asked for questions several times, but got no response.

Giriraja, whose lawyer father had once offered him a million dollars to give up Krsna Consciousness, spoke up. "The process of hearing and then asking questions is the way to clarify our understanding, just like Krsna and Arjuna. So actually we must have some questions in our minds, otherwise we would all immediately surrender to Krsna."

Prabhupada agreed, "Yes, either you surrender to Krsna, or clear it by question."

Still, there was no response. So the lecture ended, and while other devotees showed a film on the lawn, Srila Prabhupada and a small group of us were invited inside to take prasadam.

Prabhupada: Suppose I am a very big business magnate. Next life, if I am going to become a dog -- according to my karma, the nature's law will act -- then what is benefit? One day before, Indira Gandhi was so important. Next day I'll maybe(?) nowhere, finished. Nobody knows where is Indira Gandhi. Just twenty-four hours she was most prominent woman. And after twenty-four hours nobody cares to look at her. This nature's law, how you can check? This is going on. Any moment, anything can be changed by the laws of nature. So India's importance is there. They know the law. Therefore so long the body, full of intelligence, human body, is there, they'll utilize it very... That is life, not to be carried away by the waves of nature. This is India's duty. So we want to make our institution at least a place for understanding this knowledge. It doesn't matter only a few persons may understand. That is sufficient. Ekas candras tamo hanti na ca tarah sahasrasah: "If you keep one moon in the sky, that is sufficient for light. What is the use of millions of stars?" Modern education, they are creating twinkling stars, millions. All useless for light. No light. And our Vedic civilization is: "Create one moon. That's all." That is sufficient. We respect, therefore, acaryas. Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, not the so-called voted leaders. We don't care for them. What is their value? Sva-vid-varahostra-kharaih samstutah purusah pasuh [SB 2.3.19]. You say, "Oh, they are being liked, eulogized, by so many hundreds and thousands," but what these hundreds and thousands of people are? Sva-vid-varahostra-khara. They're kept in ignorance like dogs, hogs, camels and asses. This propaganda should go on by the ISKCON movement. Bombay is the nicest place. Invite them. Convince them. We have got answers for everyone, however big scientist, big philosopher, big politician. Bhagavata has answered everyone. How selected animals' name has been given. This is Bhagavata. How the comparison is perfect. I have tried to explain why a particular animal has been selected.

Tamala Krsna: That purport is very clear.

Prabhupada: So the sum and substance is that I have got the opportunity of human form, everyone, and they should not be kept in the same animal consciousness. This is civilization. They should be raised to the standard of inquiring. Athato brahma jijnasa. That is civilization. This, civilization? To keep them in darkness? Hm? Sanatana Gosvami went to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The first question is ke ami kene amaya jare tapa-traya. "Sir, I was prime minister, and I was very much eulogized by the people as pandita." Gramya-vyavahare pandita tai satya mani. "These village people, they call me pandita, and I also, such a fool, I accept, 'Yes, I am pandita. Yes.' But factually, if I inquire, 'What kind of pandita'? then apanara hitahita kichui na jani: 'I am such a learned pandita that I do not know what is the ultimate goal of my life. I am such a pandita.' Therefore I have come to You, Caitanya Mahaprabhu. You say what is my ultimate goal of life." This is approaching guru, not that "I am pandita, I am brahmana, or minister. Why shall I go to learn? I can teach everyone whatever nonsense I know. Let them..." What is that injunction? That emasculation? That Sanjay Gandhi became?

Tamala Krsna: Sterilization.

Prabhupada: Rascal, he's a boy, and he thought by sterilization the country will be delivered. Just see. By force. He thought... He became learned leader in one day, and he thought, "This will be sacrifice now." This is going on. "Because I am Indira Gandhi's son, I am perfect." Nature's law -- "Yes, you are perfect. It is all right. But I kick out in a moment -- finished."

Tamala Krsna: Perfect rascal.

Lord Nityananda, who is Balarama Himself, the first direct manifestation or expansion of Krsna, is the original spiritual master. He helps Lord Krsna in His pastimes, and He is a servant of the Lord. Lord Caitanya is the same Lord Krsna, and Lord Nityananda is Lord Balarama. Lord Nityananda fulfills all of Lord Caitanya's desires. The source of the sentiment of servitude is indeed Lord Balarama, and the plenary expansions who follow Him are all influenced by that ecstasy.

Sri Rama, or Balarama, is the protector of the devotees of the Lord. Baladeva acts as the spiritual master of all devotees, and by His causeless mercy the fallen souls are delivered. Balarama comes with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and both of Them are so merciful that in this age of Kali one may very easily take shelter of Their lotus feet. They come especially to deliver the fallen souls of this age. Their weapon is sankirtana, hari-nama. Thus one should accept the sword of knowledge from Krsna and be strong with the mercy of Balarama.

"Narottama dasa Thakura says that Balarama and the son of Maharaja Nanda have advented Themselves as Gaura-Nitai. To propagate this fundamental principle, we are establishing a Krsna-Balarama temple to broadcast to the world that worship of Gaura-Nitai is the same as worship of Krsna-Balarama.

Although it is very difficult to enter into the Radha-Krsna pastimes, most of the devotees of Vrndavana are attracted to the Radha-Krsna lila. However, since Nitai-Gauracandra are direct incarnations of Balarama and Krsna, we can be directly in touch with Lord Balarama and Lord Krsna through Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu. Those who are highly elevated in Krsna consciousness can enter into the pastimes of Radha-Krsna through the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is said: sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is a combination of Radha and Krsna.

Balarama means guru-tattva. Balarama represents guru. Yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasadah. If we want to understand Caitanya Mahaprabhu, if we want to understand Krsna, then we must take shelter of Balarama. Nayam atma bala-hinena labhyah. This bala-hinena labhyah, this Vedic injunction, means "Without the mercy of Balarama you cannot understand, you cannot realize your spiritual identification. So that Balarama comes as Nityananda Prabhu. Balarama haila nitai. Therefore we must take shelter of Balarama."

(1) I perpetually worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, whose bright face mocks the full autumn moon, whose pure complexion glistens, whose gait is like that of a maddened elephant, who is always intoxicated in Krsna-prema, who embodies pure spiritual energy, whose face holds a gentle smile, whose eyes are always rolling due to His absorption in Krsna-prema, whose lotus hand holds a glowing staff, and who, by the performance of nama-sankirtana, pierces the influence of Kali-yuga.

(3) I perpetually worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, who is very dear to Sri Saci-nandana, who is worshipped by the entire universe, who is the embodiment of happiness, who possesses infinite mercy for delivering the souls who are drowning in the age of Kali, and who, by the performance of sri-harinama-sankirtana, thwarts the progressing false pride of the ocean of repeated birth and death.

(4) I perpetually worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, who said to Sri Krsna Caitanya, "Hey brother Gauranga! What will be the destination of the sinful souls of Kali-yuga and how will theyt be redeemed? Please devise a method by which they will easily attain You."

(5) I perpetually worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, who wandered around Bengal and, approaching the door of each and every home, threw open His arms and exclaimed, "O brothers! All of you should eternally perform sri-harinama-sankirtana together. By doing so, I will take the responsibility to deliver you all from the ocean of material existence."

satam srayah-sindhunnati-kumuda-bandhum samuditam
khala-sreni-sphurjat-timita-hara-surya-prabham-aham

(6) I eternally worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, who is likened to the Agastya Muni who forcibly swallows the ocean of repeated birth and death, who is a rising full moon which increases the ocean of the saintly persons' welfare, and who is a sun which dissipates the darkness of ignorance cast by the various classes of miscreants.

(7) I eternally worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the tree of Krsna-bhakti, who wandered on every path in Bengal dancing, singing, and calling out "Hari bol! Hari bol!" and who lovingly bestowed merciful sidelong glances upon those who were not compassionate to even their own selves.

(8) I eternally worship Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the root of the Krsna-bhakti tree, who held the supremely soft lotus-hand of His brother Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu, whose heart became filled with the highest bliss when the two brothers gazed into each other's faces, and who wandered here and there delighting the townspeople with His sweetness.

param nityanandastakam-idam-apurvam pathati yas-

(9) May Sri Nityananda Prabhu place His lotus feet in the heart of one who lovingly recites this unprecedented Nityanandastaka, which is the reservoir of rasa, the greatest treasure of the most exalted Vaisnavas, and the storehouse of the essence of bhakti-rasa. This astaka is sung in the melody known as 'Sikharini".

Lord Siva lives under a tree.  He is master of the material energy and so does not have to bother with housing.  However, the followers of Lord Siva are awarded with material opulences.  Shouldn't we desire material opulences and comforts?

"The devotees of Lord Siva are opulent only in terms of the material qualities. Factually, such so-called advancement of civilization is the cause of entanglement in material existence. It is actually not advancement but degradation. The conclusion is that because Lord Siva is the master of the three qualities, his devotees are given things manufactured by the interactions of these qualities for the satisfaction of the senses. In the Bhagavad-gita, however, we get instruction from Lord Krsna that one has to transcend this qualitative existence. Nistrai-gunyo bhavarjuna: the mission of human life is to become transcendental to the three qualities. Unless one is nistrai-gunya, he cannot get free from material entanglement. In other words, favors received from Lord Siva are not actually beneficial to the conditioned souls, although materially such facilities seem opulent."

In the download section of my website  http://tinyurl.com/9er95 you will find a copy of Ganguly's complete English translation of the Mahabharata (originally in 13 hardback volumes) in HTML format. It is in a 7.5 MB zipped file.

The Mahabharata explains by example how Lord Krsna's Vedic culture and Varnashrama Dharma are meant to work. Where the Manu Smriti is a concise book of laws for Mankind the Mahabharata shows how those laws are applied. The Mahabharata along with the Ramayana have been the main foundation for the continuation of Vedic culture because they are easily accessible to the masses. The Mahabharata was actually written for the unfortunate people of the Kali Yuga to help uplift them. A close study of the Mahabharata and Ramayana in conjunction with the Manu Samhita would serve as a good guide on how to implement Varnashrama Dharma. And, in conjunction with the Srimad Bhagavatam, insight into Daivi Varnashrama Dharma. The Mahabharata is thus an essential text for anyone interested in implementing VAD.

The Mahabharata is a vast treasure house of Brahminical knowledge and as the Mahabharat itself says: "What is found in the Mahabharata may be found in other texts; whatever is not found in the Mahabharata is not found anywhere."

You will also find a PDF copy  of a canto of Agnivesa's Caraka Samhita (an Ayurvedic text) entitled Sarirasthana, a fascinating account of how the body is formed starting with philosophical details, conception, karmic details, embryology etc. I once gave this text to an obstetrician to read while she was waiting to see me and she was astounded at how much knowledge was contained in such an ancient text. Free Speech and a Clash of Cultures

Many Hindus can relate to the outrage by the world-wide Muslim community over the cartoons of the prophet Mohammed carried in newspapers across Europe recently.

The Hindu community have also been similarly incensed and deeply offended by the way Hindu deities, and Hinduism generally, continue to be blasphemously depicted. The pictures of Lord Krishna on shoes, and Hindu deities on toilet seats, are but two recent examples.

Though Hinduism believes in freedom of expression, it also recognises the responsibility that comes with it.  Free speech should not be so irresponsible that it flagrantly mocks bonafide religious personalities - blasphemy is just an abuse of free speech. The media therefore has a huge responsibility in recognising the difference between free speech and straightforward blasphemy.

Current issues of grave concern to Hindus are the advertisement of Southern Comfort in Greece, which portrays the Goddess Durga holding bottles of Whisky; and the paintings of Mr. M. F. Hussain that depict Hindu deities in the nude.  In dealing with these cases of blasphemy, Hinduism would not normally issue threats of violence to deal with the situation. Strongly worded condemnations and, if necessary, organised but lawful protests are the recommended methods of response.

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, December 19, 2005: Work on the world's first human-made species is well under way at a research complex in Rockville, Md., and scientists in Canada have been quietly conducting experiments to help bring such a creature to life. Robert Holt, head of sequencing for the Genome Science Centre at the University of British Columbia, is leading efforts at his Vancouver lab to play a key role in the production of the first synthetic life form -- a microbe made from scratch. The project is being spearheaded by U.S. scientist Craig Venter, who gained fame in his former job as head of Celera Genomics, which completed a privately-owned map of the human genome in 2000. Dr. Venter, 59, has since shifted his focus from determining the chemical sequences that encode life to trying to design and build it: "We're going from reading to writing the genetic code," he said in an interview.

The work is an extreme example of a burgeoning new field in science known as synthetic biology. It relies on advances in computer technology that permit the easy assembly of the chemical bits, known as nucleotides, that make up DNA. Several scientific groups are trying to make genes that do not exist in nature, in hopes of constructing microbes that perform useful tasks, such as producing industrial chemicals, clean energy or drugs. Dr. Venter and his colleagues are pushing the technology to its limits by trying to put together an entirely synthetic genome.

But even if the team can assemble all of the bacteria's 500,000 DNA chemicals (roughly 35,000 has been the record so far), no one knows if the organism will be viable. Will simply synthesizing a chemical sequence spark life? "Nobody has ever done it before so absolutely it is a key hurdle," Dr. Venter said. "So the profound problem is what do you do with this DNA once you get it? How do you turn it into an actual organism? You need the genome to encode and make the organism. "But the way biology works, you need the organism to make the genome."

Krishnapura mutt seer ascends Paryaya Peeta

Sri Vidyasagara Thirtha Swamiji of the Krishnapura mutt ascended the sacred 'paryaya sarvajna peeta' inside the sanctum sanctorum of the about 800-year-old Sri Krishna temple and took charge of the temple for the next two years, amidst chanting of vedic hymns, early today.

The 34th pontiff of the Krishnapura mutt (48), wearing a silk saffron turban, ascended the paryaya peeta at Dhanur Lagnam at 0555 hrs. This is his third paryaya term, after the ones in 1974-76 and 1990-92.

Earlier, the outgoing Sri Vishvapriya Thirtha Swamiji of Admar mutt performed the last pooja of his paryaya term to the presiding deity, before descending the peeta.

After taking charge, Sri Vidyasagara Thirtha Swamiji sat on the peeta and took the temple keys and 'Akshaya Patra' (the perennial golden bowl and ladle) from the outgoing seer, marking the most significant ritual of the paryaya festival.

The biennial paryaya system among the pontiffs of the Ashta (eight) mutts of Udupi to conduct Sri Krishna pooja and run the temple was introduced by saint Sri Vadiraja Swamigal of Sode Vadiraja mutt in 1522. However, earlier, the term was for just two months in rotation. As many as 30 cycles of paryaya have been completed, starting from the Palimar mutt to Pejavar mutt. In the present cycle to be completed in 2018, the Krishnapura mutt seer was the third swamiji to ascend the paryaya peeta.

According to a TAM report, religious channels had a viewership share of 0.63 per cent of the total television pie in 2004, and it rose to 0.72 per cent in 2005, which, when rounded off, is almost equal to the viewership that comes from the music channels (1 per cent). Channels such as Aastha and GOD, for instance, had an all-India viewership share of 28 per cent in 2005, while Zee Jagaran had a 23 per cent share.

Mr. Pradeep Hejmadi, Vice-President, TAM Media Research, said, "The viewership of religious channels has been on the rise. In fact, the viewership rates significantly shot up on events such as the opening of the Akshardham Temple in September, which was telecast l ive by Aastha. The same channel had also covered the Navaratri celebrations live in different parts of the country, during which it attracted a lot of younger viewers."

In fact, the genre also attracted a number of advertisers last year, the prominent categories being tires, antiseptic creams, basic telecom services, cement, baby products, and so on. However, Mr. Hejmadi said the advertising growth had not kept pace with the genre growth. He said media planners had not found the environment in religious channels conducive enough to place their brands. "Religious channels have to invest in marketing. These channels are like black boxes now and their topmost challenge is to educate and convince advertisers to advertise on their channels."

India to Ban Drug Blamed in Vulture Deaths

They also figure benevolently in Hindu history from time to time. The vulture king Jatayu tried to save Sita from abduction in the Ramayana, and was injured in the process. Jatayu informed Rama who took Sita, leading eventually to her rescue. The vultures sudden approach to extinction has been a concern for over a decade.)

More than 90 percent of India's vultures, a crucial link in the environment, have died and the government is working to ban a drug blamed for the near-extinction, officials said Tuesday. A. Raja, the minister for environment and forests, also said at an international conference on vultures that officials would soon begin a nationwide census of the birds to assess how many are left, the government's Press Information Bureau reported. Over the past 15 years, millions of oriental white-backed, long-billed and slender-billed vultures in South Asia have died from eating cattle carcasses tainted by diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory and painkiller given to sick cows, experts say. Now a replacement drug harmless to vultures will eliminate the need for diclofenac.

Vultures play a vital role in disposing of carcasses and in the process help halt the spread of disease. Fewer vultures has meant more food for India's large population of stray dogs, allowing them to thrive, which ''could lead to rise in incidence of rabies,'' junior environment minister Namo Narain Meena said, calling for a complete ban on the veterinary use of the drug.

Rome: Forget the US debate over intelligent design versus evolution. An Italian court is tackling Jesus - and whether the Roman Catholic Church may be breaking the law by teaching that he existed 2,000 years ago.

The case pits against each other two men in their 70s, who are from the same central Italian town and even went to the same seminary school in their teenage years.

The defendant, Enrico Righi, went on to become a priest writing for the parish newspaper. The plaintiff, Luigi Cascioli, became a vocal atheist who, after years of legal wrangling, is set to get his day in court later this month.

"I started this lawsuit because I wanted to deal the final blow against the Church, the bearer of obscurantism and regression," Cascioli told Reuters.

Cascioli says Righi, and by extension the whole Church, broke two Italian laws. The first is "Abuso di Credulita Popolare" (Abuse of Popular Belief) meant to protect people against being swindled or conned. The second crime, he says, is "Sostituzione di Persona", or impersonation.

"The Church constructed Christ upon the personality of John of Gamala," Cascioli claimed, referring to the 1st century Jew who fought against the Roman army.

A court in Viterbo will hear from Righi, who has yet to be indicted, at a January 27 preliminary hearing meant to determine whether the case has enough merit to go forward.

"In my book, The Fable of Christ, I present proof Jesus did not exist as a historic figure. He must now refute this by showing proof of Christ's existence," Cascioli said. Speaking to Reuters, Righi, 76, sounded frustrated by the case and baffled as to why Cascioli - who, like him, came from the town of Bagnoregio - singled him out in his crusade against the Church.

"We're both from Bagnoregio, both of us. We were in seminary together. Then he took a different path and we didn't see each other anymore," Righi said.

"Since I'm a priest, and I write in the parish newspaper, he is now suing me because I 'trick' the people."

Righi claims there is plenty of evidence to support the existence of Jesus,including historical texts.

He also claims that justice is on his side. The judge presiding over the hearing has tried, repeatedly, to dismiss the case - prompting appeals from Cascioli.

"Cascioli says he didn't exist. And I said that he did," he said. "The judge will to decide if Christ exists or not."

Even Cascioli admits that the odds are against him, especially in Roman Catholic Italy.

"It would take a miracle to win," he joked.

Ancient Hindu civilisation and mathematics

The ancient Hindu sages discovered the miracles of modern scientific tools. Believe it or not, the following are the glorious examples of them.

I. The Concept of Zero

The concept of zero came from the revered Hindu sages in Vedic times thousands of years ago.

Without the concept of zero the binary system is blind. No counting, no commerce or no computer business. The earliest documented "date" was found in today's Gujarat [BC 585-586] in an inscription on Sankedia copper plate. In Brahamaphuta—Siddhanta of Brahamagupta (7th century CE), zero was lucidly explained. Muslim invaders from Central Asia crossing the Hindukush mountain ranges invaded Bharat 1300 years ago and plundered its beauty, riches, books, thrones and what not. They plagued the holy land with sword, loot, arson and rape and destroyed and ravaged the whole land in the name of jehad and "Allah". There was no Steven Spielberg (Schindler's List) like cinema director who could document this sordid past of our history. There was no patent system at that time. Might was right. They considered those substances of robbery maal-e-ganimat (booty looted from kafirs to be distributed among themselves and friends of theirs) and thus inculcated those invaluable theorems of mathematics, astronomy and geometry in Arabic books in around 770-1200 CE. From there, those extraordinary concepts were carried to Spanish Europe in the 8th century. However the concept of zero was referred to as shunya in the early Sanskrit texts of the 4th century BC and was
clearly explained in Pingala's Chand Sutra of the 2nd century too.

II. The Contribution to Astronomy

Hindu sages told modern scientists how to map the sky in terms of glaring stars almost 4000 years ago. Copernicus published his theory of revolution of the Earth around the Sun in 1543 AD only. But our Aryabhatta in the 5th century had stated that the Earth revolves around the Sun in these specific words: "Just as a person boarding on a boat feels that the trees on the banks are moving, people on the revolving earth also feel that the sun is moving". Such illustrious teaching of astronomy was rarely seen in the contemporary writings of the Greek astronomers. In his Aryabhatteem, he clearly stated that our Earth was round and it rotated on its own axis, orbited the Sun and was suspended in the space. It also explained that the lunar and solar eclipses occurred by the interplay of the shadows of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth.

III. The Law of Gravity

The Law of Gravity was known to the ancient Hindu astronomer Bhaskaracharya. In his Surya Siddhanta he noted: "Objects fall on the Earth due to force of attraction of the Earth. Therefore, the Earth, planets, constellations, the Moon, and the Sun are all held in the galaxy due to this great cosmic attraction."

It was in 1687—1200 years later—that Sir Isaac Newton discovered (re-discovered?) the Law of Gravity, which was already invented by the greatest Hindu astronomer Bhaskaracharya, of course which was written in the holiest language, Sanskrit.

IV. The Invention of Trikonmiti

The word geometry seems to have emerged from the Sanskrit word gyaamiti, which means measuring the Earth. And the word trigonometry is similar to trikonmiti meaning measuring triangular forms.

Euclid was famous for the invention of geometry in 300 BC whilst the concept of trikonmiti had emerged in 1000 BC in Bharat. It is evident lucidly from today's "practice of making fire alters (at homagni kshetra) in different shapes, e.g., round, triangular, hexagonal, pentagonal, square and rectangular". It was part and parcel of daily pujas and homagnis in ancient times. The treatise of Surya Siddhanta (4th century) described in fascinating details about trigonometry, which was introduced in Europe by Briggs 1200 years later in the 16th century.

V. The Invention of Infinity

The value of "Pi" was first invented by the ancient sages of Bharat. The ratio of circumference and diameter of a circle is known as "Pi" which gives its value as 3.14592657932...

The old Sanskrit text Baudhayna Sulbha Sutra of the 6th century BC mentioned that above-mentioned ratio as approximately equalled to that of Aryabhatta's ratio [in 499 BC] worked out the value of "Pi" to the fourth decimal place as [3x (177/1250) = 3.1416]. Many centuries later, in 825 AD, Arab mathematician, Mohammed Ibn Musa admitted: "This value of "Pi" was given by the Hindus (62832/20,000 = 3.1416)."

VI. Baudhayna's Sulbha Sutra versus Pythagoras's Theorem

The famous Pythagoras's theorem states: "The square of the hypotenuse angled triangle equals to the sum of the two sides." This theorem was actually discovered by Euclid in 300 BC but Greek writers attributed this to Pythagoras. But the irony of fate is that our so-called intellectuals (indeed Macaulay's sons who have forgotten their old but rich and glorious ancient Hindu heritage) had also accepted that theorem as a contribution of Pythagoras. They never read or tried to know that Baudhayna's Sulbha Sutra which has been existing for many thousands of years (written in the Sanskrit) had already described lucidly the theorem as follows: "The area produced by the diagonal of a rectangle is equal to the sum of the area produced by it on two sides."

VII. The Measurement of Time or Time Scale

In Surya Siddhanta, Bhaskaracharya calculated the time taken by the Earth to revolve around the Sun up to the 9th decimal place. According to Bhaskaracharya's calculation it is 365.258756484 days.

Modern scientist accepted a value of the same time as 365.2596 days.

The difference between the two observations made by ancient Hindu sage Bhaskaracharya just by using his super brain (in the 4th century AD) and today's NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Agency) scientists of America by using super computer (in the 20th century AD) is only 0.00085, i.e., 0.0002 per cent of difference.

The ancient Bharatbhoomi had given the world the idea of the smallest and largest measuring units of Time. In modern time, only Stephen Hockings, Cambridge University Professor of theoretical physics, had the courage to venture into the abysmal depth of the eternity of Time. Astonishingly, our ancient sages taught us the following units of time:

Therefore, the lowest was 34,000th of a second known as krati and the highest of the measurement of the Time was known as kalpa, which equalled to 4.32 billion years. Is it not amazing? Are you not feeling proud to be a Hindu descendent? Swami Vivekananda, the modern sage of Bharat, stated in his famous sermons compiled in his Rousing Call to the Hindu Nation, "Take pride in Hinduism; pronounce yourselves as a descendant of a Hindu. Boast to be a Hindu and give a clarion call to rouse the Hindu nation from its lethargy and slumber."

VIII. The Invention of Decimal System

It was the ancient Bharatbhoomi that gave us the ingenious methods of expressing all the numbers by means of 10 symbols (decimal systems)—an invaluable and gorgeous idea that escaped the genius of Archimedes and Apollonius, two of the greatest Greek philosophers and mathematician produced by antiquity (100-130BC).

The highest prefix used for raising 10 to the power in today's mathematics is "D" for 1030 (for Greek Deca).While as early as 100 BC Hindu mathematicians had exact names for figures up to 1053.

Is it not amazing to know that the ancient Hindu sages used to remember them just by using their outstanding memory power or was there some super computer known to them also, which we are quite unaware of?

In Anuyogadwar Sutra, written 100 BC, one numeral had been shown to be raised to as high as 10140 which is beyond our outmost stretches of imagination. All of our remaining hidden treasures, which had not been destroyed or stolen by the foreign mercenaries and invaders, were written in Sanskrit, mother of all languages, which should be revived. It is our legacy to inherit such rich property that our forefather had left for us by their meticulous observations over thousands of years ago.

All hidden treasures are written in Sanskrit, which we are quite ignorant of and our so-called Macaulay's sons are trying their best to prevent us from knowing about our glorious past. Sir Monier-Williams rightly said: "Hindus are perhaps the only nation, except the Greeks, who have investigated independently and in true scientific manner, the general laws that govern the evolution of languages."

More than this, the Hindus had made considerable advances in astronomy, algebra, arithmetics, botany and medicine, not to mention their superiority in grammar, long before some of these sciences were cultivated by the most ancient nations of Europe.

Indeed, Hindus were Spinozists 2000 years before the birth of Spinoza, Darwinians many centuries before the birth of Darwin, and evolutionists, centuries before the doctrine of evolution had been accepted by Aldus Huxley's of our times, and before any word like evolution existed in any language in this world.

We should take a vow to work together to search those hidden treasures out, propagate the notion that Sanskrit is not a dead language. Sanskrit is the elite of the elitist, classic of the classics and it should be revived once again. We will again sit in the seat of the world assembly with our head held high and with pride. I would like to draw the final touch with the quotation from Swami Vivekananda, "I do not see into the future nor do I care to see. But one vision I see clear as life before me, that the ancient Mother has awakened once more sitting on her throne rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Proclaim her to all the world with the voice of peace and benediction."

Who remembers ancient India’s scientific wealth?

                            Sessions of Indian Science Congress are held with monotonous regularity at fixed periodicity. Eminent persons use them to think aloud on what breakthroughs India needs to achieve. For instance, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has just told such a session that India should aim at a second Green Revolution. That was a laudable sentiment. But is it not the duty of the notables to use such sessions to tell the masses what ancient India had achieved in the field of science?

Is Indian heritage only spiritual and cultural, and not scientific? On the contrary, it is at least as scientific as it is spiritual or cultural. It is, however, true that any claim that India’s scientific heritage is as great as its spiritual and cultural heritage may baffle many Indians because we have for decades, if not centuries, believed that science is the West’s contribution to humanity while India made the world aware of, and prize, cultural and moral values.

That is the reason why we talk day in and day out of our spiritual and cultural heritage but seldom, if ever, of our scientific heritage. Do we have any? Not many know the true answer. In the book “Changing Perspectives in the History of Science: Essays in Honour of Joseph Needham”, edited by Mikulas Teich and Robert Young, Dr Rahman, “speaking for India”, convincingly exploded the myth that science and technology were essentially European.

The Director of the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies called for co-ordination among various agencies for the allocation of funds for the promotion of research into the history and philosophy of science in India.

Inaugurating in Delhi a meeting of experts on “approach and logistics of supporting research into history and philosophy in India”, Dr Ashok Jain said that critical studies in the historical and philosophical contexts of science and technology were vital for the sustenance of an innovative tradition. Research in this area is not only of cultural and academic significance but is responsible also for bringing to life the “foundational aspect of science” which is vital for the development of theoretical science.

Unfortunately, a meeting, jointly organized by the Institute and the National Commission on History and Philosophy of Science, went more or less unnoticed by the public; understandably because the view is gaining ever-increasing acceptance that interest in the history of science is a sign of failing powers. Mercifully, however, medical practitioners who are usually enthralled by the history of medicine do not hold this low opinion. The possible reason is that physicians and surgeons, like all who are executants rather than theorists, are great hero-worshippers, and hero-worship is a great incentive to the study of historical records.

What, anyway, is the Indian science whose history needs to be known? Take, for instance, zinc. Europe learnt to produce it in 1746, but it was distilled in India more than 2,000 years ago through the use of a highly sophisticated pyro-technology. Distillation of this metal in India was brought to light through a series of nearly intact structural remains of ancient Indian zinc distillation furnaces at Zawar near Udaipur in Rajasthan. In late 17th century zinc was imported in small quantities from the East and used in the production of brass. After all, before the advent of present-day high-pressure technology, zinc had inevitably to be produced as a vapour because of the vast difficulties in its distillation process at Bristol in Britain in 1747. The discoveries at Zawar nevertheless prove that Indians knew the process some 2,000 years ago.

Or consider astronomy. According to Dr B.G.Sidhartha, Director of the B.M. Birla Planetarium at Hyderabad, Rig Vedic authors had already discovered the spherecity of the Earth and established the heliocentric (Sun-cantered) theory much before Copernicus. The Rig Veda, according to him, is the oldest textbook on modern astronomy. As such, its seers were scientists in the modern sense. Yet they deliberately concealed this knowledge in hymns, probably because the subject was the preserve of priests. In the hymns themselves, however, can be found through new interpretations the information that light is composed of seven colours, a discovery attributed by modern science to Newton. Thus, when Indra lets loose his seven rivers, it means the splitting of sunlight. Therefore, the rainbow is called “Indradhanush” in the Atharveda.

Three ancient astronomers, the “Ribhus”, were the first to establish that the Earth was round and that Mercury and Venus revolved round the Sun. But these sacred texts came down from father to son and thus lost their form and structure till they were lost by about 1400 B.C.

The computer is the reigning fad today and, therefore, India’s scientific achievements of the past, some argue, pale into insignificance. But were our ancient scientists totally ignorant of what has developed into the computer? Aryabhata, the ancient Indian mathematician, it is true, had no computer, but some of the techniques that he developed were precisely the ones used in solving problems with today’s computer. What is more, computer designers in the West are now studying the works of ancient Indian mathematicians to learn a thing or two about writing software. Aryabhata’s algorithm, called “kuttaka” and meant to solve linear intermediate equations, has been found by the West to be extremely efficient computationally. Similarly, the method of Brahmagouta, Jayadeva and Bhaskara-II (rediscovered in Europe 1000 years later) was “optimum in minimizing the number of steps for solving a problem”.

Dr Rick Briggs, an American computer engineer, in a paper published in the 1985 issue of “Artificial Intelligence”, said that ancient Indians had developed a method for paraphrasing Sanskrit “in a manner that is identical not only in essence but also in form with the current work of artificial intelligence”. According to him, “Sanskrit grammarians had already found a way of solving what is perhaps the most important problem in computer science—natural language understanding and machine translation”.

Now take physics. Dr Erwin Schrodinger, in an essay, “Seek For The Road”, written in 1925, said that science, like Vedantic philosophy, used analogy to comprehend phenomena, as logic had its own limitations and left the scientist in the lurch after taking him up to a certain point. Dr Schrodinger, who won the Nobel Prize for his wave equation that placed the revolutionary quantum concept (as opposed to the Newtonian mechanistic interpretation) on a firm scientific basis, found support for Vedanta in the new physics with its element of indeterminism and idea of “collapse of the wave function”, mathematical entity to describe nature for no discernible physical reason.

The most important link between science and the Sastras is an uncompromising logical attitude to everything. According to Prof. T.S.Shankara, who took up “sanyas” and became Swami Parmananda Bharati after teaching physics for 15 years in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology at Chennai, some basic concepts of modern-day physics are found in the Sastras. For example, the concept of relativity is to be found in them. Basic ideas of relative velocity (velocity not being absolute but only relative) are extensively referred to by Shankaracharya, quoting the Vedas. The Brahmashastras contain a profound discussion on the same subject. According to Swamiji, “if only some of our students had known this, one of them could have developed Einstein’s theory of relativity much before it was done. Pithy statements in the Sastras can help our scientists make significant contributions”.

Or consider what the eminent nuclear physicist D.S.Kothari has to say. In a prestigious lecture on “Science and Values” delivered at the Indian National Science Academy on the concluding day of its golden jubilee celebrations, he claimed that the view of the universe provided by physics proclaimed the moral insight of philosophy. “Plank’s constant, which explains movement of electrons at various levels of energy, does lead to the moral conclusion that in practicing truth lies immortality as stated in the Rig Veda,” he explained. “Plank’s constant has a message that either we hang together or will be destroyed together,” he said, and referred to the Rig Vedic invocation to the Sun that stressed the wisdom of practicing truth. How can we lament lack of national pride in Indians without first acquainting them with the country’s phenomenal scientific achievements in the dim distant past?

         The submergence into the sea of the city of Dwaraka, vividly picturised in the great epic of Mahabaratha, is indeed true! A chance discovery made by a team of scientists, in the Gulf of Cambay region, establishes that the Mahabaratha story is not a myth. The rich city with fertile landscape and great rivers had indeed submerged into the seas several thousand years ago.

         But before we get to the present, a bit of history is quite in order.

         There is a vivid description in the Mausalaparvan of the Mahabaratha about the submergence of Dwaraka. The people of Dwaraka including Arjuna seemed to have witnessed strange things before its submergence in the sea. 'The event was preceded by the unabated rumbling noise of the earth throughout the day and night, birds screamed continuously, and heavy winds swept the land. The sea, which has been beating against the shores, suddenly broke the boundary that was imposed on it by nature. Huge tide with great height surrounded Dwaraka. The sea rushed into the city submerging beautiful buildings. The sea covered up everything and in a matter of few moments, there was no trace of the beautiful city.' It was something of an ancient tsunami.

         And now the scientists at NIOT (National Institute of Ocean Technology, of the Department of Ocean Development) have established this. While working for British gas in the Gulf of Cambay region, a few years ago, the scientists of the NIOT, were stunned to see images of objects and things, completely alien to the marine domain. Immediately a team swung into action and samples were collected and sent for analysis and dating (it is usually done to scientifically establish the antiquity of the excavated objects).

         Samples collected include artefacts, wood pieces, pottery materials, hearth pieces, animal bones. They ere sent to Manipur University, Oxford University, London, Institute of Earth Sciences, Hanover, Germany for analysis and dating. The results were astonishing. It was found beyond doubt that the samples belonged to a period varying from 7800 to 3000 years (BP) Before Present !

         The even more flooring discovery happened soon. NIOT, which carried outside scan and sub-bottom surveys in the year 2002-03, established beyond doubt the presence of two large palaeochannels (river channels which existed once and later submerged under the sea) in the Gulf of Cambay. Alluvium samples were collected from different locations in the areas of the palaeochannels by the gravity core and grab method.

         Badrinarayanan, Marine Archaeologist and formerly coordinator for the project, says 'the most astonishing thing was that all of the crew-members, including the ship master who was a catholic, had dreams full of strange visions, on the night of discovery. We felt we had stumbled upon something great and unusual.'

         The study of the samples under microscope revealed the occurrence of fragile and highly sensitive Ostracods (tiny marine and fresh water crustaceans with a shrimp-like body enclosed in a bivalve shell) overlain by regular marine fauna.

         These results strongly indicated that the freshwater deposition which took place in this area was very much a part of the onshore land region and later submerged to the depths varying from 20 to 40 meters. The alluvium (fresh water sand) samples sent to the Earth Science Department, Manipur University for OSL (optically stimulated luminescence) dating gave the OSL determinant of 3000 years (BP) Before Present !

         Prof.Gartia (The Journal of Indian Ocean Archaeology, No.2 of 2005, Pg.144) after conducting extensive investigations concluded that Gujarat region had experienced at least three large killer earthquakes about 1500, 3000 and 5000 years BP respectively. Geomorphological evidences also show beyond doubt that the North- Western part of the Indian landmass was seismically active during the last 10,000 years. These killer quakes are likely to have caused the shifting of the rivers and sea level fluctuation including the sinking of the legendary city of Dwaraka, capital of the Lord-King Krishna. The discovery about the availability of fresh water from the now submerged major rivers along with other marine-archaeological evidences, corroborates the Mahabaratha reference that Dwaraka, the ancient city of Sri Krishna, lies under the great ocean !

LALU AND KALU

Lalu and Kalu refused to learn anything. They were just scamps. All they wanted to do was fritter away their lives. So they refused to learn anything. Their father was trying by so many ways to get them educated, and by so many ways they were driving the teachers away by their rascal behaviour. So because the father was wealthy, he proclaimed, "I will give half the wealth of my business to any teacher who can simply educate my two boys in simple arithmetic, because if they can learn how to add up sums, then they can at least later in life do some business. I can give them some part of my business, and they can carry on. But they must at least learn how to add up sums. If they can't do that, then they'll be totally useless to me."
So he proclaimed this, and then one old brahmana came. The brahmana was very old. He had seen a lot of life, and he'd seen many different kinds of bad students, so he was quite experienced. So he said, "Let me give it a try." Unlike all the other teachers, he wasn't acting like a teacher. He decided, "I'll act like I'm the friend of these boys." So then he said, "Boys, let's forget about these lessons and go for a walk." So he took Lalu and Kalu for a walk, and took them out to the field, and there were some cows grazing there.
So then he turned to Lalu and said, "Lalu, I wonder if you could tell me how many legs that cow has." So then Lalu very eagerly said, "Yes. One, two..." he began to count and the teacher was thinking, "Ah, he's learning, very good." But then Kalu put his hand over Lalu's mouth. "Don't say any more! He's trying to trick you! He wants to teach you how to count. Therefore he's asking you how many legs that cow has. Don't say another word." This is the crafty cunningness of the materialist. This Kalu thought he was being so clever in outwitting the teacher, but this cleverness is simply the symptom of his own foolishness, his own rascaldom.
The teacher was trying in so many ways to trick the boys, but they were so clever, so over intelligent, that they avoided any lesson that the teacher tried to get them to take up. So finally, the old brahmana became tired. He said, "Well boys, it's been a hard day. I'm going to take a nap." So they retired in some room. "Let's lay down here and take rest." So the boys pretended to go to sleep. But they waited and when they saw that the teacher was snoring peacefully, they got up and started smoking, because they were rascals. And then the teacher woke up suddenly. The boys very quickly threw the cigarettes out the window and jumped back into bed and pretended that they were sleeping. The teacher looked around and saw smoke in the air, he smelt it. He woke up the boys. "What have you been doing? You've been smoking!" The boys pretended like they were being woken up. "Hm? What are you saying? Smoking? We've been sleeping."
The teacher said, "No no, look. The room is filled with smoke. Obviously you've been smoking." So the boys began to argue with the teacher. "No no. Obviously what has happened is that why we were all sleeping, some person came in here and was smoking. Someone else."
The teacher grabbed their hands and smelt them. "No! I can smell on your fingers cigarette smoke!" Then they boys just persisted, "No no, obviously what has happened is that the man who came in here to smoke placed the cigarettes between our fingers and was holding our hands to his mouth and smoking like that."
So then the old brahmana was finally driven to distraction. He went to the boy's father, and said, "I'm sorry. I can do nothing with them. They're such rascals. They continually persist in their rascaldom."

MORAL: This is what's going on today also. The so called intelligence and expertise shown by today's materialists is just like that. It is actually a demonstration of their own incapacity to understand the simple truth of life.

Mayapur Gaura Purnima Offerings Now Online

Devotees around the world can now make offerings to Sri Gauranga in Mayapur on Gaura Purnima by visiting http://www.Gaurapurnima.com and joining the Gaura Purnima Offering of Service.

This facility has been especially set up for those who are unable to come for the festival itself. Devotees everywhere can participate as a sponsor at the level of their choice and enjoy the benefit of having a variety of sevas performed on their behalf.

Donations start at just $21 for offering a Silver Lamp and include a variety of Kalash abhishek sponsorships for donations of $51 and more. Proceeds from these offerings are used to fund the Mayapur Gaura Purnima festival, providing the prasadam, seminars, entertainment and festivities for nearly 4000 devotees from all over the world as well as hundreds of thousands of visiting pilgrims.

Any surplus funds will go to the Sri Mayapur Project Annual Fund to provide much-needed resources for a variety of programs and services like teacher training, expanded curriculum resources for the schools, development of various sites along the parikrama path, developing new programs for cow protection, beautifying and enhancing the Mayapur Gardens, and many more important projects.

One special project that is expected to be funded through this appeal is the installation of a webcam in the temple to provide constant darshan of the deities worldwide.

In addition, devotees who would like to assist in this appeal can register as a volunteer sevak. Volunteers are provided with their own personal web site and many special tools to reach out to their friends, family and associates to invite them to join in this offering.

Relax over a coffee, an organic lunch, and some fine music; devote a little time to yourself...

When we took over the Festival earlier this year, we were given a list of some 1500 email addresses to contact regarding the festival. We expect that some of these will no longer be valid.

Whilst updating our records we have decided to make two lists, one of people who are interested in having a stall and another for those who wish to hear when and where our Festivals will be held.

East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple - everyone can do it. Please do. Please will you also forward this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life.

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Tamarind Rice (Huli Chitranna)
Ingredients:
Tamarind water-1/2 cup
Chana dal-1 tbsp
Peanuts - 2 tbsp
Curry leaves- 20
red chillies - 3

Preparation:
Make mustard or jeera vaggarini(vagar) and add peanuts, chanadal, turmeric, a pinch of hing. As the dal and peanuts turns brown add tamarind water, curry leaves, red chillies, salt and allow it to boil until it thickens into a paste. To this paste mix the cooked rice(2 cups) .

Other version of chitranna: Everything is same except that you add Saaru pudi and jaggery and add only one red chilli(if needed).

Srila Prabhupada's EGGPLANT FAVORITE

Ingredients:
1 eggplant, cubed
massala (1tsp cummin, 1 tsp corriander, 1 stp turmeric powder, pinch hing, nutmeg, cardamon, cinnamon, allspice, chili, cloves ground).
ghee
1 cup chopped green beans
2 sliced tomatoes
salt

Method:
Heat ghee in a pan and make massala  Add eggplant and green beans with a little ghee and cook until soft in covered pan. Add tomatoes. On a high flame, cook and stir until wetness has evaporated.

DRY CAULIFLOWER AND POTATOES:

Ingredients:
1 cauliflower
4 potatoes
massala
1 t. turmeric
1 t. salt

Method:
Wash and cube potatoes. Wash cauliflower and break into small flowerettes. Make massala. Add vegetables, salt and turmeric. Cover with water and cook over medium heat covered until dry.

Khasta Kachori

Cooking Time  : 45 mins.
Preparation Time : 15 mins.
Makes 12 kachoris.

For the dough
2 cups plain flour (maida)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup melted ghee or vanaspati

For the filling
1/2 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram), soaked for 4 hours
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
1 teaspoon green chilli-ginger paste
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon amchur (dry mango powder)
2 tablespoons Bengal gram flour (besan)
3 tablespoons oil
salt to taste

Other ingredients
oil for deep frying
For serving
2 cups beraten curds
green chutney
khajur imli ki chutney
chilli powder
roasted cumin seed (jeera) powder
chopped coriander
sev or nylon sev

For the dough
1. Combine all the ingredients and knead into a firm dough using a little water. Knead very well for 5 to 7 minutes.
2. Divide the dough into 12 equal parts and keep covered under a wet muslin cloth.

For the filling
1. Heat the oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
2. When the seeds crackle, add the soaked and drained moong dal and sauté for a few seconds.
3. Add the green chilli-ginger paste, chilli powder, garam masala, amchur, gram flour and salt and stir for 5 to 7 minutes till the masalas are cooked.
4. Cool and divide into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and keep aside.

How to proceed
1. Roll out each portion of the dough into a circle of 50 mm. (2") diameter.
2. Place one portion of the filling mixture in the centre of the rolled dough circle.
3. Surround the filling mixture with the dough by slowly stretching it over the filling mixture.
4. Seal the ends tightly and remove any excess dough if necessary.
5. Roll each filled portion into a circle of  62 mm. (2½") diameter taking care to ensure that the filling does not spill out.
6. Gently press the centre of the kachori with your thumb.
7. Deep fry on low heat in hot oil till golden brown on both sides. The kachoris should puff up like puris. These take a long time to fry as the crust is thick and need to be cooked on the inside also.
8. Cool and keep aside.

How To Proceed
To serve
1. Place one kachori on a serving plate and make a hole in the centre.
2. Fill it with 3 to 4 tablespoons of the beaten curds.
3. Top with green chutney, khajur imli ki chutney, chilli powder, cumin seed powder, salt and coriander.
4. Sprinkle sev on top and serve immediately.

Handy tip(s) :
1. The kachoris can also be eaten without the curd topping. Just serve them with khajur imli ki chutney.
2. VARIATION : MINI KHASTA KACHORIS
3. You can make 24 small kachoris using the above recipe.

Scrambled Curd - Great Vegetarian Dishes by Kurma dasa
This is the vegetarian counterpart to scrambled eggs. Fresh curd cheese (panir) is scrambled with sour cream and sprinkled with black salt (which has a distinct sulphur-like flavour), spices, and fresh herbs to produce a stunning result. Serve at breakfast with hot gradually add the lemon juice and toast or Puffed Fried Breads (Pooris),  and Tomato Chutney.
PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME: 40 - 50 minutes
YIELD: enough for 4 - 6 persons

Ingredients:
6 litres (101/2 pints) full-cream milk
7 tablespoons (140 ml) lemon juice
2 tablespoons (40 ml) ghee or butter
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) yellow asafoetida powder
1/2 teaspoon (1 ml) turmeric
1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) sweet paprika
1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) coarsely ground black pepper
3/4 cup (185 ml) cream or sour cream
2 tablespoons (40 ml) coarsely chopped fresh coriander leaves
1 teaspoon (5 ml) Indian black salt (kale namak), finely ground

1. Boil the milk in a heavy-based 8 - 10 litre/quart saucepan, stirring constantly. When the foam rises, gradually add the lemon juice and reduce the heat to low. Stir very slowly until the solid curd cheese separates from the yellowish whey. (If separation does not occur after 1 minute, add a little more lemon juice.
2. Pour the curds and whey into a colander lined with a triple-thickness of cheesecloth. Press under a heavy weight for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Unwrap the curd cheese and break it into 21/2 cm (1-inch) chunks.
4. Heat the ghee or butter in a large pan or wok over moderate heat. Saute the asafoetida and turmeric in the hot ghee. Add the pieces of curd cheese and stir gently until the turmeric-coloured ghee is well distributed. Increase the heat and add the paprika, salt, and pepper. When the curd cheese is well mixed, remove from the heat.
5. Add the cream or sour cream and the black salt, stirring carefully. Add the fresh herbs, mix well, and serve hot.

Blueberry and Mascarpone Tart
( Mascarpone Cheese http://www.pastrywiz.com/season/tira2.htm )
Preparation Time Less than 10 mins
Cooking Time 10 to 30 mins

Ingredients
packet of shop bought puff pastry
2 tubs of mascarpone
1 tub of runny honey
fresh blueberries
icing sugar to dust

Instructions
Roll out the puff pastry into a large square and cook according to the instructions on the packet (approximately 7 minutes).
Once cooked, leave the pastry to cool.
Mix the mascarpone cheese and honey together and spread over the cooled pastry.
Decorate with blueberries and a light dusting of icing sugar.

SUFGANIYOT - Hanukkah Donuts
The young State of Israel has created many of its own customs. One is serving jelly doughnuts at Hanukkah, which are fried in oil to symbolize the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days instead of one.

Ingredients:
1 scant tablespoon (1 package) dry yeast
4 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup lukewarm milk or warm water*
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Pinch of salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons yogourt
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter, softened*
Apricot or strawberry preserves
Sugar
Vegetable oil for deep-frying
little corn flour and water to make paste
*Use butter and milk if serving at a milk meal.

Method:
Child: Mix together the yeast, 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and the milk. Let sit to make sure it bubbles.
Child: Sift the flour and mix it with the remaining sugar, salt, cinnamon, yogourt, and the yeast mixture.
Adult with Child: Knead the dough until it forms a ball. Add the butter or margarine. Knead some more, until the butter is well absorbed. Cover with a towel and let rise overnight in the refrigerator.
Adult: Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/8 inch.
Child: Cut out the dough into 24 rounds with a juice glass, or any object about 2 inches in diameter. Take 1/2 teaspoon of preserves and place in center of 12 rounds. Top with the other 12. Press down at edges, sealing with corn flour and water paste. Crimping with the thumb and second finger is best. Let rise for about 30 minutes.
Adult: Heat 2 inches of oil to about 375°. Drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, about 5 at a time. Turn to brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
Child: Roll the doughnuts in sugar.
Makes about 12.

Ingredients:
12 pieces lasagne
4 cups ricotta cheese
1 cup sugar, divided
8 kiwis, peeled
4 cups strawberries, washed and trimmed, 8 reserved for garnishing
4 cups blackberries, washed
1/2 cup toasted, sliced almonds
Mint sprigs, to garnish

Cook the pasta according to package directions. Rinse, drain and set aside.

In a medium bowl, stir together the ricotta cheese and 1/2 cup sugar. Set aside.

In the food processor, puree 4 kiwis with 2 tablespoons sugar. Transfer the puree to a bowl and set it aside. Rinse the processor bowl.

In the processor, puree half the strawberries with 2 tablespoons sugar. Strain the puree into a bowl and set it aside. Rinse the processor bowl.

In the processor, puree half the blackberries with 2 tablespoons sugar. Strain the puree and set it aside.

Slice the kiwis into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Slice the strawberries into 1/8-inch thick pieces. Slice the blackberries in half.

Reserve 1/4 cup of each of the purees to use as a garnish when serving.

To assemble the lasagne, first cover the bottom of a 9-inch-by-13-inch glass baking pan with 3 pieces of pasta. Spoon 1/3 of the ricotta on top and spread it evenly. Pour the kiwi puree over the cheese and arrange the kiwi slices on the puree. Lay on 3 more pieces of pasta and cover with 1/2 the remaining cheese. Pour the strawberry puree over the cheese and sprinkle with sliced strawberries. Lay on 3 more pieces of pasta and cover with the remaining cheese. Pour the blackberries puree over the cheese and sprinkle with blackberries. Top with a final layer of pasta. Cover tightly with plastic and refrigerate overnight.

Just before serving, sprinkle the lasagne with the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and with the toasted almonds. Cut into 8 rectangles and use a spatula to set the pieces on dessert plates. Decorate the plates with dots of reserved purees. Garnish each piece of lasagne with a strawberry and a sprig of mint.

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

'Hasya' or humour, created using either a situation or a behaviour-mode, easily reveals in dialogues and gestures during a play but a difficult theme for a sculpture or painting. There are, however, some excellent examples of 'Hasya' in pictoral art also and these days in cartoons. Besides caricatures and 'bhangeris'-type characters, myths, legends or stories are also used for depicting humour. For example Lord Shiva is camping with Parvati under a tree in the forest. As Shiva is adorned with serpents, a serpent, drapes across the otherwise naked form of Shiva like a loincloth, is covering his private parts. Hearing of him being there under the tree, Lord Vishnu, along with Garuda, His faithful vehicle, comes to pay him homage. The snake, as soon as it sees the bird carrier Garuda, his natural enemy, abandons Shiva leaving him all exposed and naked and flees into an anthill. It is humour by situation. Deliberate tricks and or sarcasm, usually bringing forth the philosophy and culture, sometimes in Krishna-related themes, are also used for creating humour.

You must go on pulling

This morning was particularly memorable. The sun was shining brightly through the tall and narrow windows, casting patches of dazzling light on the clean, white sheets on the floor. He sat comfortably in the middle, his legs crossed, right ankle resting on the left knee. His fingers loosely intertwined, he closed his eyes briefly and enjoyed the warmth of the sun as it danced upon his golden form. Seeing the opportunity, Hansaduta, Harikesa, and I sat on either side of him, just happy to be with him in a quiet moment. He began to reflect on the unfortunate state of the world's inhabitants. He explained that due to a lack of knowledge about the Supreme Lord people are suffering. Under the false impression of being independent they commit all kinds of sinful acts, not knowing and not caring for the results, foolishly thinking they are free to do as they like. But when the volume of sinful life becomes too great they suffer the consequences in the form of pestilence or war. They think that by politics and meetings they can avoid such things, but that is not possible. They are helpless to prevent them, and therefore they receive their punishment through the three-fold miseries of life. At just the right moment, nature brings the demons together and engages them in war.

To illustrate the point, he gave an amusing but striking example of how maya works. "In my young days we had one teacher. Whenever there was any misbehavior between the boys, the teacher would stop them and bring them out to the front of the class. He would make them stand face-to-face and each take hold of the ears of the other and on his order make them pull. So the one, he is pulling, and the other is hurting, so he pulls back even harder, and each one is pulling and crying. But they cannot let go because the teacher is ordering, 'No, you cannot stop. You must go on pulling!' Similarly, maya brings together one Churchill and one Hitler. 'Now, rascal, pull!' And neither can stop. And the foolish people glorify them."

The thought of the scene so humored him that even before he finished he began to laugh heartily. His shoulders and belly shook, and his brilliant teeth flashed like pearls in the sun. When Prabhupada smiles the entire room, even the universe, seems to light up. It's a Vaikuntha smile that spreads transcendental effulgence everywhere around. Prabhupada's mood was so open and congenial it seemed, if just for a moment, that we had joined a picnic with Krsna and His cowherd boyfriends, joking and laughing in the forests of Goloka. We laughed with him, glancing at each other in appreciation and wonder as to who this extraordinary personality Srila Prabhupada really is. He is far beyond our comprehension, yet we feel ourselves extremely fortunate to share these intimate moments with him.

It was an entrancing moment, and it occurred to me that Srila Prabhupada must have many friends in the spiritual world with whom he can eternally enjoy happy and carefree days. Yet being extraordinarily merciful he chooses to be here among us. Although the most exalted personality, he appears to like nothing better than to be with his disciples, foolish and neophyte as we are. He gives the impression there is no one in the world he would rather be with and nothing he would rather be doing than sharing whatever he has with us, although we have nothing to give him in return that could possibly be of interest to him. It seems a lopsided relationship, but Prabhupada doesn't mind. He is not looking for anything for himself, only to see what he can give us. As a result, we have obtained more than any of us can ever have hoped for.

Gladys Dunn was new in town and decided to visit the church nearest to her new apartment.

She appreciated the pretty sanctuary and the music by the choir, but the sermon went on and on.  Worse, it wasn't very interesting. Glancing around, she saw many in the congregation nodding off.

Finally it was over.  After the service, she turned to a still sleepy-looking gentleman next to her, extended her hand and said, "I'm Gladys Dunn."

He replied, "You and me both!"

A jeweler called the police station to report a robbery.

"You'll never believe what happened, Sergeant. A truck backed up to my store, the doors opened, and an elephant came out. He broke my plate glass window, stuck his trunk in, sucked up all the jewelry, and climbed back into the truck. The doors closed and the truck pulled away."

The desk sergeant said, "Can you tell me, for identification purposes, whether it was an Indian elephant or an African elephant?"

The ways of this material world - strange but true

The following is supposedly an actual question given on a year 3 university chemistry exam.

The answer by one student was so profound that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. *Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.

Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.

*With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa Banning during my first year at university that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you", and take

into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting, "Oh my God., Oh my God ! ! Yes, Yes, Oh God Yes ! !"

I was self-conscious about going to the gym, because I thought the pounds I had put on would make me stand out among the spandex-clad regulars.

I chose a treadmill in the corner so I'd be inconspicuous. However, as I exercised, my worst fears came true.

At least a dozen people turned to stare at me periodically. I thought it might be my imagination, but then one woman even squinted to get a better look.

Mortified, I stepped off the machine to leave. When I turned around, I realized that the gym's only wall clock had been hanging just inches above my head.
