Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:  Chapter 2 - Contents of the Gita Summarized

 TEXT 67
                          indriyanam hi caratam
                          yan mano 'nuvidhiyate
                         tad asya harati prajnam
                          vayur navam ivambhasi

WORD FOR WORD
   indriyanam--of the senses; hi--certainly; caratam--while roaming; yat--with which; manah--the mind; anuvidhiyate--becomes constantly engaged; tat--that; asya--his; harati--takes away; prajnam--intelligence; vayuh--wind; navam--a boat; iva--like; ambhasi--on the water.

TRANSLATION
As a boat on the water is swept away by a strong wind, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:
Unless all of the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord, even one of them engaged in sense gratification can deviate the devotee from the path of transcendental advancement. As mentione  in the life of Maharaja Ambarisa, all of the senses must be engaged in Krsna consciousness, for that is the correct technique for controlling the mind

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter, but still nectar...)

Prabhupada is Considerate

Prabhupada once arrived in New York and as usual, hundreds of devotees had gathered at the temple to meet him. As Prabhupada stepped out of his car, the devotees exploded in a tumultuous kirtana. As he walked to the doorway of the 55th Street temple, hundreds of devotees followed close behind, chanting Hare Krsna and "Jaya Prabhupada."

A young mother carrying her baby followed immediately behind Prabhupada as he passed through the glass doors that led to the temple's lobby. The lobby was also filled with ecstatic, chanting devotees. Seeing the young mother behind him, Prabhupada stopped and held the glass door open for her. Even with hundreds of people worshiping him, Prabhupada took the time to show proper etiquette to someone else.

Once Himavati dasi was serving as Prabhupada's cook. One day she made eggplant sabji for Prabhupada. Prabhupada tasted the sabji, but didn't eat any more of it. After Prabhupada had finished his meal, Himavati distributed his remnants to the devotees, but the eggplant sabji was too salty for anyone to eat. The next day, Himavati made the same preparation, only this time she used the right amount of salt. Prabhupada's only comment was, "Yesterday it was a little salty," and in this way he showed his consideration of his disciple's feelings.

Prabhupada visited Geneva in 1974, and Lilavati dasi arrived there to type for him, but she had contracted hepatitis and soon had to go into the hospital. Three days after his arrival, Prabhupada called for the temple president, Guru Gauranga, and asked him where Lilavati was. He was told that she was in the hospital. Prabhupada then asked if anyone had gone to see her and Guru Gauranga explained that everyone had been so busy that no one had thought to go. "We shall go see Lilavati. Make all preparation," Prabhupada said.

Guru Gauranga immediately set about readying the car and the devotees, and he made arrangements for prasadam. When everything was ready, he told Prabhupada. Prabhupada said, "Very good," and told them all to go see Lilavati. Prabhupada himself stayed behind, but almost everyone else in the temple went to see Lilavati, who became very much enlivened by the care and concern which Prabhupada had shown her.

Rajendranatha dasa, interview; Rukmini-devi dasi, interview; Guru Gauranga dasa, interview.

Vrsakapi: ...Flemings, Prabhupada. You are a professor?
Professor Flemings: Well, I'm retired.
Vrsakapi: Retired professor? From what school?
Professor Flemings: University of Maryland.
Vrsakapi: The University of Maryland. What was your subject?
Professor Flemings: Modern poetry and theater.
Vrsakapi: Oh, very nice, very nice. This is, ah, you are a physicist?
Carl Warentz: That's correct.
Vrsakapi: And your name is?
Carl Warentz: Carl Warentz.
Vrsakapi: Carl Warentz, Prabhupada, he's from Catholic University, physicist.
Prabhupada: If you are uncomfortable you can sit on this cot...
Carl Warentz: No, that's okay, I'll sit like this.
Prabhupada: You are welcome to sit down here.
Hari-sauri: You can sit on the couch.
Vrsakapi: This is Eugene Thoreau, Prabhupada. He's an attorney in Washington, D.C. He's helped us very much opening up sankirtana places. Very good.
Vipina: Srila Prabhupada, this is a professor from Catholic University, a physicist.
Vrsakapi: I told him already.
Vipina: Oh, did you?
Hari-sauri: Bring one or two chairs.
Prabhupada: So how do you like our movement, Hare Krsna movement?
Vrsakapi: He said how do you like our movement?
Guest (1): Well, for myself I know nothing about it, that's why I'm here.
Guest (2): I like it, I've seen some very good people go into it, and I like it.
Woman guest: I've known two people who went into it, and I was at a meeting when you were on Q Street. And I've always liked it.
Eugene Thoreau: I have found it strangely appealing. I met it by accident at an airport, and one of the devotees gave me a flower, and I was struck by it. So I happen to be a lawyer and I offered my services, and I got a call just a few days after that.
Prabhupada: Open the fan.
Carl Warentz: I find it interesting.
Vrsakapi: You like this speed, Srila Prabhupada? Should we turn this on for you?
Prabhupada: Yes. Ap? (Hindi, "You?")
Dr. Sharma: I'm professor at Berkeley, California. And I was Regents Professor at UCLA, University of California, Los Angeles.
Prabhupada: Accha. In Los Angeles we have our mandira, we have... You sometimes go to our temple?
Dr. Sharma: Yes, I go to the temple in Berkeley. I was at Berkeley about a week ago. I'm in London now, at the Royal Institute of Chemistry. I was born in Haridwar.
Prabhupada: Haridwar. (laughs) Bhagavan ka desa hari. Hari, Hari means the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and dvara means the door, the doorway to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There is a place in India, Haridwar, people go there for pilgrimage, very famous place.
Dr. Sharma: I grew up with yogis and sannyasis in Hrishikesh. My father is a recluse.
Prabhupada: Oh, your father is also recluse.
Dr. Sharma: Recluse. And I must tell an incident which, although I was growing up with meditation, I find the bhakti-yoga, the chanting, really fulfilling and actually making the difference. Actually making the difference. In one case, it is abstract philosophy, which is the raja-yoga, other yogas, philosophies, and this actually makes the person transformed. Another incident occurred yesterday, when I was meditating and I wanted to ask about five different slokas of Gita, out of which, surprisingly, you discussed four. (laughter) This was most astounding to me.
Prabhupada: Which one?
Dr. Sharma:

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham
 [Bg. 4.7]

That was one. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. I'd like to discuss two more: karmany evadhikaras te ma phalesu kadacana. If you could please kindly...
Prabhupada: That is explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam.

atah pumbhir dvija-srestha

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:

"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:

Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"

In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.

There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.

We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Farm animals have feelings which should be respected and catered for, .......academics at a London conference have said.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/1/hi/sci/tech/4360947.stm

Farm animals have feelings which should be respected and catered for, academics at a London, UK, meeting have said.

They believe animals should not be dismissed as simple automatons - cows take pleasure in solving problems and sheep can form deep friendships.

Delegates from around the globe were speaking at the Compassion in World Farming Trust (CIWF Trust) conference.

They shared ways of exploring the minds of animals, as well as monitoring their suffering and alleviating their pain.

We have to understand we are not the only beings on this planet with personalities and minds

Jane Goodall
"The study of animal sentience is one of the most exciting and important in the whole of biology," said Professor Marian Dawkins, of Oxford University.

"My plea is that, when we make decisions and regulations about animals and campaign for them, the animals' voices should be heard and heard strongly."

For whatever reasons, we humans tend to draw a charmed ring around ourselves - we suppose we are the only ones that think thoughts and feel feelings.

We are happy to ascribe emotions to a tiny flailing inarticulate baby, while denying them in a sheep or even a chimpanzee.

Talk of animal sentience is often brushed off as fluffy and sentimental - not the stuff of science or the real world.

Our eyes only?

But perhaps we have been too hasty in our dismissal - perhaps consciousness does not peer through our eyes alone.

Farm animals are more productive if they are treated well
"They are not unfeeling objects," said Professor Marc Bekoff, of the University of Colorado, US.

"And what animals feel matters very much as they try to negotiate their lives in a human-dominated and often abusive world, in which they are mere pawns in our incessant and obsessive attempts to control their lives for our and not their benefit.

"I am incredulous that some sceptics actually question whether animals feel anything."

Now there is a growing weight of evidence to suggest animal minds probably do house emotions quite similar to our own.

Professor Donald Broom, from Cambridge University, studies the behaviour of cows.

His team put them in a special pen which had a lever that, when pressed, would release the cows into a field with lots of delicious food rewards.

Non-human animals probably feel emotions like fear and anger
The researchers found that when the cows finally "clicked" and worked out how to press the lever to reach the food, they showed signs of delight.

"When they learnt it they showed an excitement response," Professor Broom told the BBC. "Their heart rates increased and they were more likely to jump and gallop when they went down towards the food.

"It was as if the animals were saying 'Eureka! I've found out how to solve the problem'."

He continued: "We need to have a certain amount of respect for these animals, and I think most people have more respect for an animal if they feel it's aware of what's going on."

More milk

Being kind to farm animals isn't just a moral duty - according to the CIWF Trust delegates; there is something in it for us, too. Cows, for example, produce significantly more milk if their handlers talk to them gently rather than shouting and pushing them around.

"The handlers don't have to be really mean and hit the cows," said Edmund Pajor of Purdue University, US. "It's just a slap on the rump in the way that many farmers would. But the cows don't like it and it makes a real difference.

Talk about animals' feelings is often brushed off as fluffy and sentimental
"It helps send a message about treating animals in a proper way. A number of dairy farms now have signs up saying 'please don't shout at the cows'."

The famous chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall, in her opening speech at the conference, said we needed to re-define the way we viewed animals, both tame and wild.

Dr Goodall, 71, who has spent 45 years studying chimps in Africa, told the CIWF Trust delegates that humans and chimps were strikingly similar - that both shared a capacity for barbarity but were also capable of great altruism.

She described how she had seen chimps come to the aid of others who had been frightened, orphaned or injured, demonstrating "a care and compassion indistinguishable from our own".

She said: "We have to understand we are not the only beings on this planet with personalities and minds."

Scientists find new role for the swastika

   Date: Wed, 02 Mar 2005 04:00:14 -0000
   From: "vrnparker" <vrnparker@yahoo.com>

University of Southampton 23.02.2005

Just a month after a call for a European-wide ban of the swastika, scientists have found that the symbol has new applications in optical communications and could have a role in quantum cryptography.

Dr Darren Bagnall from the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton has found that he can arrange tens of thousands of gold swastikas on a square millimetre to form new optical metamaterials that act to artificially change the polarisation of light, effectively "twisting" light in accordance with the rotation of the swastikas. By changing the degree of twist in a predictable way the chiral metamaterials can provide an alternative way to code information that is being transmitted using light.

According to Dr Bagnall, it is the special arrangement and squareness of the swastika which makes it the ideal geometry for their experiments. He comments: "The swastika has a number of special features, it is entirely made up of vertical and horizontal straight lines and it is square but can still provide the feeling of left-handed or right-handed rotation known as chirality. It is this chirality which causes our swastikas to twist light."

Dr Bagnall and his team are continuing to experiment with a wide range of other chiral geometries such as, spirals, triskella and some fractals and are very excited about the potential for use of these chiral metamaterials in technology.

Dr Bagnall comments: `While we are still at an early stage in our experiments, we can already anticipate applications in optoelectronics, laser physics and optical communications. This is especially true, as technologists are increasingly using polarisation state as a means of carrying information in applications such as quantum cryptography.'

Imperialist Propaganda and the Aryan Invasion Lie
http://www.thesala.com/episode09/03.html

   Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 14:59:52 -0800 (PST)
   From: Vrn Parker <vrnparker@yahoo.com>
Subject: On the Vedic Empire and Aryans

N. Anonymous

In an age where lies are mass-produced by powerful and manipulative governments, packaged, shipped, and then sold for consumption to the general public through various media outlets, true scholarship, void of bias, political, or material motivation, is difficult to come across, if not almost impossible. And extensive publications that are released, re-edited and then subsequently re-released, which describe the histories of countless countries subjected to European colonialism, which are produced by the colonizers themselves, are certainly no exception. I'd like to briefly discuss a topic that is very contentious and emotive, especially for Indians, as it is nothing less than an unprecedented historical scandal that somehow managed to be passed off as genuine scholarship.

The Aryan invasion theory basically states that the Indian civilization is a foreign creation, and that the entire culture is actually the invention of an invading race of blonde-haired, white-skinned foreigners from Europe. It is these primitive invaders, the theory says, that created an ancient civilization flourishing with advanced forms of technology and science, along with an enormous archive of transcendental wisdom, that is collectively known as India's Vedic empire. Proponents of the theory insist on building insidious and unproven arguments based on the Aryan invasion scheme, going as far as suggesting that the Indian natives were illiterate savages. Suspicion immediately arises when the monumental achievements of an ancient civilization are accredited to 'foreign white races' for which the scholars have no evidence of. Yes, the dubiousness of such bold claims becomes apparent to those who understand the mechanism of imperialist regimes and of those who follow in their footsteps. This form of postulation is consistent with the evangelistic mentality of perceiving indigenous peoples as being incapable of social evolution. This gives rise to notions of superiority, and this form of supremacy then attempts to validate the need for imperialism. So in effect, the Aryan invasion theory also makes the daring claim that all Indians of non-Dravidian background are essentially the descendents of this intrusive white race of barbaric marauders from Europe. The fallacies of this theory have been exposed and the truth continues to surface repeatedly, especially through the fields of archaeology and Vedic studies, yet it is ignored and rejected by those in positions of power. Even many of those who no longer believe in the Aryan invasion theory have been mislead into thinking that the whole project was due to honest mistakes in scholarship. However, the idea of an Aryan invasion is not the result of erroneous research or innocent misinterpretations of history.

No, on the contrary, the Aryan invasion theory is the product of clever premeditation, a deliberate plot devised by numerous parties for political reasons, with racism centered at its core. Aside from being a tool used to maintain political ownership over India, the Aryan invasion theory ultimately promotes the racist notion that white-skinned Europeans are an inherently superior race of human beings, a superhuman species of some sort which, under the guidance of an apparent manifest destiny, colonized the natives of India to eradicate 'barbarianism' and establish 'civilization.'

The Aryan invasion theory goes on to say that this race of primitive invaders raided India sometime between 1500 and 100 B.C., enslaved the natives, and then spontaneously created a globally admired civilization that was unparalleled at the time. The British colonists, whose main aim was to subjugate the people of India under their authoritative Christian rule, and the prejudiced western scholars who together engineered the Aryan invasion theory, along with diehard advocates of the theory, have still not been able to make up their minds as to when this group of invaders first entered the nation, if they ever did, assuming that such a race of people actually existed. In fact, the so-called scholars who promote this propaganda haven't even been able to agree on a homeland from which this mysterious race of people originated, let alone generate ample evidence to formulate a convincing argument! They've simply thrown a handful of countries randomly into the air, still indecisive as to which one would create the most believable scenario. So far, every country eastward from Greece to Iran has been a candidate for the origin of these alleged 'Aryan invaders', including the Caucasus mountain range located between the Black and Caspian seas, along with the Eurasian areas of western Russia and Kazakhstan. As more and more information relating to Indian history is gathered, it becomes painfully obvious that the 'Aryan invasion' was a fictional event that was not a part of genuine history. Therefore, every assertion ever made regarding the history of India that finds it's basis on the Aryan invasion theory has no foundation in reality, as it possesses no supplemental data to reaffirm such an absurd claim, and must be rejected accordingly, as it is nothing more than mere speculative gossip on the part of racist scholars and authors with hidden agendas. It is these scholars, who write false renditions of history based on a theory that's grounded on Eurocentric narcissism and anti-Indian slander, who are responsible for intentionally publishing libel in the form of calumniating Indian and world history books, millions of which are sold yearly advocating this bogus notion of 'Aryan invasion.'

'Aryans' are not a race of nomadic European conquerors that rode into India on horses and chariots, wielding swords used in pillaging and colonizing the natives, driving them to the southernmost part of the country. They are not the mighty blond-haired, white-skinned warriors and traveling pirates that, according to popular belief, mated with the local women and created the Vedic empire after forcing the indigenous population into submission. No, at best this representation is a gross falsification and utter distortion of recorded history, a lie of the highest magnitude. The Aryan invasion theory is a scandal perhaps unequalled in the world of scholarship, evoking delusions of grandeur in its advocates regarding the allegedly inherent superiority of the 'great white race.' One single piece of evidence supporting this malicious campaign remains to be seen, although many in the western world become infatuated with such romanticized dogmas and believe them without any further question. Western audiences quickly accept tales of swashbuckling conquerors as truth, as they appeal to the primitive instinct of man, and because they have unfortunately been a reality for many indigenous cultures from around the world. Moreover, the Sanskrit term 'Aryan' is not even a racial connotation! It doesn't refer to a wandering race of barbarians, but rather to a person who follows a certain spiritual code, irrespective of race, color, religion, or nationality. 'Arya' can be roughly translated as 'one on the path of spiritual evolution', and 'Ya' refers to the supreme personality of God, Yadu, which is an alias for Krishna. Thus, a loose but appropriate definition of 'Aryan' would be 'one who is on the path to God-realization.' To apply this term to define nomadic barbarians, whose pastimes include the conquering and slaughtering of peaceful people, is ridiculous to say the very least.

The progenitors of the Vedic civilization were indigenous to India, contrary to popular belief. A great contradiction that is often overlooked lies here. We would be safe in assessing the level of mental development-insofar as it relates to the overall spiritual evolution of a race of plundering nomads perpetually engaged in the act of conquering societies of peaceful people-as being elementary, if not primitive. Primeval savages are not enlightened beings. This is even more evident if we take into consideration that these violent conquerors that supposedly existed were attributed to destroying any sign of civilization that they could find upon their mythical entry into India. How then, could a traveling gang of bloodthirsty bandits with no concept of civilization, oblivious of cooperation, obnoxiously counterproductive towards social progression, and thriving off of hatred, war, and destruction, possibly possess the mental abilities necessary to be able to produce a profound library of voluminous, eloquently written literature giving credence to highly advanced forms of astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, and religion? How could these roaming barbarians have created Sanskrit, the planet's oldest and most scientific language and parent language of almost all European and Asian languages? Are primitive savages to be accredited with creating this enormous archive of knowledge that gives credence to ages of erudition? In other words, how could a race of vagabond barbarians possess the capacity to create a highly advanced civilization? It's simply not possible.

The argument of the Aryan invasion theory becomes even more absurd once the basic principles of Sanatan Dharm, literally meaning 'the eternal religion', or better known as 'Hinduism', are explained. The wisdom found in the Vedas (ancient Indian scriptures) is said to be of divine origin, transmitted to the rishis, or ancient Indian seers, directly from the cosmos, from sentient beings residing in higher dimensions of existence that we are incapable of perceiving with the sensory organs alone. The rishis originally communicated the Vedic wisdom orally and then eventually transcribed it into literary format, in the form of the Vedas. The cosmic knowledge contained within the Vedas is not representative of the tenets of nomadic European barbarians! This should be quite obvious. Rather, the principles that constitute Sanatan Dharm are said to be universal truths that can be made to apply to beings living throughout the entire universe, not limited only to planet Earth or a certain region of our planet. These truths have been said to exist without a beginning and will continue to exist without end, hence the name 'eternal religion.' A most basic and fundamental principle of the eternal religion is that of non-violence. Taken in this context, the idea of a violent Aryan invasion into India is most incongruous with basic religious, humane principles that the primitive barbarians, who the scholars tell us founded the Indian civilization, are credited with loyally abiding by! Is it possible for tribes of ruthless, primitive conquerors to be skilled practitioners of non-violence who simultaneously possess a profound, awe-inspiring understanding of the universe? The answer needs no acknowledgement as the question answers itself!

The native denizens of India established the nucleus of the Vedic empire along the banks of the Indus and now dried-up Saraswati Rivers in northwestern India and Pakistan, although evidence of an advanced civilization of remote antiquity can be found throughout the country. For example, the Marine Archaeological Unit of the National Institute of Oceanography found the submerged city of Dwaraka, whose existence was until recently thought to be purely mythical, along the coast of Gujarat in 1985. This finding gives credence to the validity of the Mahabharata civilization of 3,000 B.C., explained in detail in the Mahabharata, which clearly illustrates the uninterrupted continuity of Indian civilization. Also, close geographical and geological examination of India, along with satellite photography, indicates that the massive Saraswati river, which is mentioned more times than any other river in the Rig Veda (oldest of the Vedas) and is described as being the life-giving center of the Vedic civilization, once flowed profusely, and that it dried up before 3,000 B.C., prior to any alleged Aryan invasion, thereby proving that the Vedas could not have been written some 1,500-2,000 years later by a race of foreign invaders! The oceanic symbolism, numerous maritime references, and astounding depth of knowledge regarding India's geography, which is vividly described in the Rig Veda, also prove that the founders of the Vedic civilization were native to India and could not have arrived from the distant land-locked areas that they are believed to have migrated from. In fact, the only type of migration that all genuine forms of evidence point to is that of the Vedic people leaving India in periodic diffusions, migrating in every direction due to natural disasters.

Moreover, the Harappan civilization (stretching from the borders of Iran to eastern Uttar Pradesh, larger than Mesopotamia and Egypt combined) has been incorrectly labeled 'pre-Vedic' because the archaeological excavations made in many of its sites unearthed the ruins of colossal urban cities that antedate all estimates ever given for the Aryan invasion, bringing the giant ancient civilization possibly as far back as 3,000 B.C. The scholars either intentionally ignore or carelessly overlook the uncanny similarities discovered to mutually exist between Harappa and the Vedic culture. Vedic tradition permeates Harappa, such as worship of fire altars, swastika symbols, seals depicting Lord Siva, and the legendary omkar symbol, all of which were found throughout several Harappan sites falsely labeled 'pre-Vedic.' Harappan and Vedic civilizations share more than a mere resemblance; they are identical. The similarities cannot be dismissed as coincidental and could not have developed independently of each other. The connection between Harappa and the Vedic civilization is obvious. They are one and the same. Harappa was the final monument of the Vedic Age. It has even been verifiably demonstrated that Harappa was built using highly advanced forms of mathematics, Vedic mathematics, derived directly from the Rig Veda, so it is impossible for this civilization to have been invaded and destroyed centuries later by an invading race of nomads who wrote the Vedas after its destruction! A mathematical doctrine belonging to the Vedic civilization, known as the Sulba-sutras, has been shown to be the source of both Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics, and the construction of Harappan fire altars were based on this text. Egyptian texts based on the Sulba-sutras date back to 2000 B.C., so Harappa clearly must predate even this date. Advocates of the Aryan invasion theory have been unable to address these issues and remain silent on such matters.

The Aryan invasion theory is a practice in racism, grounded specifically in western supremacy and geared towards oppressing the Indians by robbing their cultural identity and falsifying their ancestral heritage. It asserts that the Indian culture was an extension of previous developments made in Europe and that it was dependent on the superior intelligence of Europeans, thereby justifying the need for colonial rule and militant Christian expansion in India. It was also a colonization strategy utilized by the British regime to divide and conquer India by creating enmity between the inhabitants of the south and north, thus making it much easier to rule over a people who were plagued by internal dissension and lack of unity. The creator of this Aryan-Dravidian divide theory himself, Bishop Caldwell, admitted his linguistic theories to be of "vast political and moral importance", that being to serve the purpose of Christian missionary propaganda.

The British regime did not want it publicly known that the indigenous people of India built a highly advanced civilization in ancient times, one that eventually spawned the mathematics, science, philosophy, and religion of the rest of the world. So in order to debase the proficiency of the ancient Indians, they manufactured the Aryan invasion lie. Through the use of puppets, including prominent western scholars that work at prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Oxford and possess significant influence over academic circles, the British regime continues to enslave the Indian people, working secretly by promoting unfounded hearsay through the medium of 'Indology' courses taught at rich American universities. Along with these professors, the British Empire makes use of leftist Indian pseudo-scholars who wish to maintain a high position in the status quo, and Marxist Dravidians whose hubris prevents them from abandoning their animosity towards Indians that they perceive as being the descendents of the 'invading Aryans.' These pseudo-scholars, who also have the power to influence academic circles (which in turn publish material that influences the entire world), act as successors to dogmatic Christian missionaries left over from the British colonial era. Their libel is published on a large scale in India, where the universities quickly begin teaching this corrupted version of Indian history to its own people. This is a subtle, nearly undetectable form of slavery, which makes it extremely dangerous, as this form of spoon-feeding students misinformation under the pretext of 'formal education' is capable of programming millions in the absence of their awareness.

German nationalist and Christian missionary Max Muller further advanced the cause of the British regime and expanded the Aryan invasion theory, being one of the many major proponents of the theory who was simultaneously on the British government's payroll. Being well versed in Sanskrit and a world famous Orientalist who studied at Oxford, people from around the world naturally began to believe everything Muller said without thinking twice. What's worse is that in 1853 he introduced the Sanskrit term 'Aryan', which means 'one on the path to God-realization', into the English language; but he created a false meaning for it. He used the term 'Aryan' to describe a large family of languages. Under this phony definition he created even more fallacies, lying blatantly by speaking of "An Aryan language and its descendents" as quoted by Sir Julian Huxley. But Muller's racist campaign of degrading Indian culture did not stop there. He also created a fictional 'Aryan race' that he could associate with his equally fictitious 'Aryan language family.' These inane, fraudulent notions were "rapidly taken up in both England and Germany", as noted by Huxley. As a result, the idea of an 'Aryan invasion' into India became a globally accepted part of Indian history, although there was no evidence then, as there is no evidence now, for such a farcical claim. Muller even flatly stated in a letter he wrote to Duke of Argyll, who was appointed Secretary of State for India in December 1868, that "India has been conquered once, but India must be conquered again and that second conquest should be a conquest by education." He also added: "The ancient religion is doomed, and if Christianity does not step in, whose fault will it be?" Muller's methods of distorting widely available information on such a large scale, globally manipulating millions of people for the following one hundred and fifty years, would be impressive from a propagandist's viewpoint and are beyond the comprehension of the author of this essay. The icing on the imperialists' victory cake was the rise of Hitler. Hitler's decision to make the swastika, an ancient Indian emblem symbolizing peace and prosperity, the official symbol of his Nazi campaign, along with his habit of openly referring to himself and his Nazi army as 'Aryans', believing that they were members of a supreme human race, resulted in the inevitable completion of what Max Muller began.

One reason that this slanderous Aryan invasion theory worked and was easy to accept on a wide scale is because invasions were commonplace throughout India's history and had been well documented, providing easy accessibility to anyone who cared to research the topic. This calculated scheme also appealed to the masses because it remained consistent with the much-popularized Judeo-Christian tradition, which is filled with tales of invasions and blood baths glorifying militant colonial expansion. A one-dimensional image of history has been imprinted onto the minds of the public, making it difficult for people to perceive the many alternate historical scenarios possible.

Both the antiquity and authenticity of the Vedic civilization are purposely neglected and its uniqueness continues to go unrecognized. The genuineness of the Vedic civilization is denied even to this day, debauched and insulted by the very same minds that idolize the Biblical time scale, believing that the world was created in November of 4004 B.C., although evidence and sensibility clearly refute such nonsense. Those who vehemently believed in such absurd ideologies clearly found it impossible to acknowledge the venerability of the Indian civilization, and these are the same people who for some reason were given the task of 'teaching' the world about Indian culture. The defamatory Aryan invasion propaganda made it so that India could not claim ownership over any of its monumental achievements-the amazing discoveries of the Vedic civilization therefore had to be the product of intelligent, Christian, European minds-or so the British empire would want us to believe. It also meant that foreign imposition was necessary to 'civilize' India. Taken from this viewpoint, the Aryan invasion theory placed Hinduism as an import, as foreign to India as Islam and Christianity are. These historical forgeries helped to create a contaminated, untrue perspective of India, forcing people to perceive Indian culture as simply a combination of foreign influences. India was viewed from then on, and continues to be viewed by those who unknowingly accept the Aryan invasion theory as true, as a vast area of land with no cultural, religious, or national identity of its own, and is therefore treated as such, its future left entirely at the mercy of imperialistic forces that wish to shape it from the mold of their own selfish agendas. The collective identity of a nation and its inhabitants is thus destroyed.

More on Mahabalipuram's Off-Shore City
http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4302115.stm

INDIA, February 27, 205: Indian divers have found more evidence of an ancient port city, apparently revealed by December's tsunami. Stone structures that are "clearly man-made" were seen on the seabed off the south coast, archaeologists say. They could be part of the ancient city of Mahabalipuram, about which legend says a flood engulfed six of its seven temples. Other relics were revealed when the powerful waves washed away sand as they smashed into the Tamil Nadu coast. The Archaeological Survey of India launched the diving expedition after residents reported seeing a temple and other structures as the sea pulled back just before the tsunami hit. The new finds were made close to the 7th Century beach-front Mahabalipuram temple. "We've found some stone structures which are clearly man-made," expedition leader Alok Tripathi told the AFP news agency. "They're perfect rectangular blocks, arranged in a clear pattern." The ancient "gifts" of the tsunami are expected to be presented to an international seminar on maritime archaeology in Delhi next month. Other discoveries made at Mahabalipuram earlier this month include a granite lion of a similar age to the temple that experts believe had been buried for centuries before the tsunami shifted the sand. Archaeologists have been working at the site for the last three years, since another diving expedition discovered what appeared to be a submerged city, including at least one temple.

Ancient Hindus could navigate the air

Subject: Ancient Hindus could navigate the air

“The ancient Hindus could navigate the air, and not only navigate it, but fight battles in it like so many war-eagles combating for the domination of the clouds. To be so perfect in aeronautics, they must have known all the arts and sciences related to the science, including the strata and currents of the atmosphere, the relative temperature, humidity, density and specific gravity of the various gases...”
—Col. Olcott in a lecture in Allahabad, in 1881.

The Rig Veda, the oldest document of the human race, includes references to the following modes of transportation: jalayan—a vehicle designed to operate in air and water (Rig Veda 6.58.3); kaara—a vehicle that operates on ground and in water (Rig Veda 9.14.1); tritala—a vehicle consisting of three storeys (Rig Veda 3.14.1); trichakra ratha—a three-wheeled vehicle designed to operate in air (Rig Veda 4.36.1); vaayu ratha—a gas or wind-powered chariot (Rig Veda 5.41.6); vidyut ratha—a vehicle that operates on power (Rig Veda 3.14.1).

Ancient Sanskrit literature is full of descriptions of flying machines—vimanas. From the many documents found, it is evident that the scientist-sages Agastya and Bharadwaja had developed the lore of aircraft construction.

The Agastya Samhita gives Agastya’s descriptions on two types of aeroplanes. The first is a chchatra (umbrella or balloon) to be filled with hydrogen. The process of extracting hydrogen from water is described in elaborate detail and the use of electricity in achieving this is clearly stated. This was considered to be a primitive type of plane, useful only for escaping from a fort when the enemy had set fire to the jungle all around. Hence the name agniyana. The second type of aircraft mentioned is somewhat on the lines of the parachute. It could be opened and shut by operating chords. This aircraft has been described as vimanadvigunam, i.e. of a lower order than the regular aeroplane.

The process of extracting hydrogen from water is described in elaborate detail and the use of electricity in achieving this is clearly stated.

Aeronautics or Vaimaanika Shastra is a part of Yantra Sarvasva of Bharadwaja. This is also known as Brihadvimaana Shastra. Vaimaanika Shastra deals with aeronautics, including the design of aircraft, the way they can be used for transportation and other applications, in detail. The knowledge of aeronautics is described in Sanskrit in 100 sections, eight chapters, 500 principles and 3,000 shlokas. Great sage Bharadwaja explained the construction of aircraft and the way to fly it in air, on land, on water and use the same aircraft like a submarine. He also described the construction of war-planes and fighter aircraft.

Vaimaanika Shastra explains the metals and alloys and other required material, which can make an aircraft imperishable in any condition. Planes which will not break (abhedya), or catch fire (adaahya) and which cannot be cut (achchedya) have been described. Along with the treatise, there are diagrams on three types of aeroplanes—Sundara, Shukana and Rukma.

The aircraft is classified into three types—Mantrika, Tantrika and Kritaka, to suit different yugas or eras. In krita yuga, it is said, Dharma was well established. The people of that time had the divinity to reach any place using their ashtasiddhis. The aircraft used in treta yuga are called Mantrika vimana, flown by the power of hymns (mantras). Twenty-five varieties of aircraft including Pushpaka vimana belong to this era. The aircraft used in dwapara yuga were called Tantrika vimana, flown by the power of tantras. Fifty-six varieties of aircraft including Bhairava and Nandaka belong to this era. The aircraft used in kali yuga, the on-going yuga, are called Kritaka vimana, flown by the power of engines. Twenty-five varieties of aircraft including Sundara, Shukana and Rukma belong to this era.

Bharadwaja states that there are 32 secrets of the science of aeronautics. Of these, some are astonishing and some indicate an advance even beyond our own times. For instance, the secret of para shabda graaha, i.e. a cabin for listening to the conversation in another plane, has been explained by elaborately describing an electrically worked sound-receiver that did the trick. Manufacture of different types of instruments and putting them together to form an aircraft are also described.

It appears that aerial warfare was also not unknown, for the treatise gives the techniques of shatru vimana kampana kriya, and shatru vimana nashana kriya, i.e. shaking and destroying enemy aircraft, as well as photographing enemy planes, rendering their occupants unconscious and making one’s own plane invisible.

In Vastraadhikarana, the chapter describing the dress and other material required while flying, talks in detail about the clotheswear for both the pilot and the passenger separately.

Ahaaraadhikarana is yet another section exclusively dealing with the food habits of a pilot. This has a variety of guidelines for pilots to maintain their health through strict diet.

Bharadwaja also provides a bibliography. He had consulted six treatises by six different authors previous to him and he gives their names and the names of their works in the following order: Vimana Chandrika by Narayanamuni; Vyoma Yana Mantrah by Shaunaka; Yantra Kalpa by Garga; Yana Bindu by Vachaspati; Kheta Yaana Pradeepika by Chaakraayani; Vyoma Yaanarka Prakasha by Dundi Natha.

As before Bharadwaja, after him too there have been Sanskrit writers on aeronautics and there were four commentaries on his work. The names of the commentators are Bodh Deva, Lalla, Narayana Shankha and Vishwambhara.

Vaimaanika Shastra explains the metals and alloys and other required material, which can make an aircraft imperishable in any condition.

Evidence of existence of aircraft are also found in the Arthashastra of Kautilya (c. 3rd century b.c.). Kautilya mentions amongst various tradesmen and technocrats the saubhikas as ‘pilots conducting vehicles in the sky’. Saubha was the name of the aerial flying city of King Harishchandra and the form saubika means ‘one who flies or knows the art of flying an aerial city’. Kautilya uses another significant word, akasa yodhinah, which has been translated as ‘persons who are trained to fight from the sky’. The existence of aerial chariots, in whatever form it might be, was so well-known that it found a place among the royal edicts of Emperor Asoka and which were executed during his reign from 256-237 b.c.

It is interesting to note that the Academy of Sanskrit Research in Melkote, near Mandya, had been commissioned by the Aeronautical Research Development Board, New Delhi, to take up a one-year study on ‘Non-conventional Approach to Aeronautics’, on the basis of Vaimaanika Shastra. As a result of the research, a glass-like material which cannot be detected by radar has been developed by Prof. Dongre, a research scholar of Benaras Hindu University. A plane coated with this unique material cannot be detected using radar.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about the Indian science of aeronautics and Bharadwaja’s research in the field was that they were successfully tested in actual practice by an Indian over a 100 years ago. In 1895, full eight years before the Wright Brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, Shivkar Bapuji Talpade and his wife gave a thrilling demonstration flight on Chowpatty beach in Mumbai.

An even more astonishing feature of Talpade’s aircraft was the power source he used—an ion engine. The theory of the ion engine has been credited to Robert Goddard, long recognised as the father of liquid-fuel rocketry. It is claimed that in 1906, long before Goddard launched his first modern rocket, his imagination had conceived the concept of an ion rocket. But the fact is that not only had the idea of an ion engine been conceived long before Dr Goddard, it had also been materialised in the form of Talpade’s aircraft.

Talpade, a resident of Mumbai, was an erudite scholar of Sanskrit literature, especially of the Vedas, an inventor and a teacher in the School of Arts. His deep study of the Vedas led him to construct an aeroplane in conformity with the descriptions of the aircraft available in the Vedas and he displayed it in an exhibition arranged by the Bombay Art Society in the Town Hall. Its proving the star attraction of the exhibition encouraged its maker to delve deeper into the matter and see if the plane could be flown with the aid of mercurial pressure. For, the one hundred-and-ninetieth richa (verse) of the Rig Veda and the aeronautical treatise of Bharadwaja mention that flying machines came into full operation when the power of the sun’s rays, mercury and another chemicals called naksha rasas were blended together. This energy was, it seems, stored in something like an accumulator or storage batteries. The Vedas refer to eight different engines in the plane and Bharadwaja adds that they
 are worked by electricity.

Talpade carried on his research along these lines and constructed an aeroplane. In his experiments he was aided by his wife, also a deep scholar of the Vedic lore, and an architect-friend. The plane combined the constructional characteristics of both Pushpaka and Marut Sakha, the sixth and eighth types of aircraft described by Bharadwaja. It was named Marut Sakha meaning “friend of the wind”.

With this plane, this pioneer airman of modern India gave a demonstration flight on the Chowpatty beach in Mumbai in the year 1895. The machine attained a height of about 1,500 feet and then automatically landed safely. The flight was witnessed, among many others, by Shri Sayajirao Gaekwad, the Maharaja of Baroda and Justice Govind Ranade and was reported in the Kesari, a leading Marathi daily newspaper. They were impressed by the feat and rewarded the talented inventor.

Unfortunately, Talpade lost interest in things after his wife’s death, and after his own death in 1917 at the age of 53, his relatives sold the machine to the Rally Brothers, a leading British exporting firm then operating in Mumbai. Thus, the first ever attempt at flying in modern India, undertaken and made successful by an Indian, in a plane of Indian manufacture and built to Indian scientific specifications, slid into the limbo of oblivion.

 THE LIBERAL AUNT

A boy was raised by his aunt, who treated him very liberally.  Through bad association, the boy became a thief, yet the aunt encouraged him, "Oh, it is a very good business.  You are bringing so many things without much labour."  In time the boy became a murderer.  He was captured and sentenced to be hanged.  When asked what was his last wish, the man said he wished to speak to his aunt.  The aunt was crying and crying.  When she leaned forward to hear what her nephew wanted her to hear, the man bit off her ear.  He then rebuked his aunt, saying that if she had chastised him instead of showing him kind affection, he would not be hanged and she would not be lamenting.

MORAL:  Acts of charity should be performed in knowledge, not in ignorance, and to a worthy person.

"Spare the rod spoil the child" now an unpolitically correct Ancient outdated proverb, and the world if full of social ills.

This is their first "Ray of Vishnu"  - may they have many more.

"Sucinäm Shrimatäm gehe. So this child is born of a devotee father and devotee mother. Now he’ll again begin from the point where he lost last life. Suppose Krishna consciousness he executed fifty percent. So he’ll begin from this life fifty-one percent. That fifty percent was in his stock. But ordinary karmis—cent percent lost. He has to begin another chapter of life according to his karma." (Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. 17th July 1971. Lexture in Detroit.)

"There are two kinds of children born of good fathers: one is educated in Krishna consciousness so that he can be delivered from the clutches of mäyä in that very life, and the other is a ray of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and teaches the world the ultimate goal of life." It was a desire of Srila Prabhupada to give all of us, his children and grandchildren, the entire Vaisnava Library of devotional writings, and we are  blessed by His Divine Grace to recieve some of this literature with which to further water our creepers of devotion.

Please consider forwarding this email to your address list in the mood of going for the mercy of Lord Chaitanya by assisting His missionary desires.

How Spiritual Are You? Take This Test
http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101041025/quiz.html

UNITED STATES, October 20, 2004: Are you fascinated by the many things in life that cannot be scientifically explained? Do you seem to have a "sixth sense" that sometimes allows you to know what is going to happen? Do you sometimes feel so connected to nature that everything seems to be part of one living organism? To find out how spiritual you are, click on "source" above. The short test is adapted from a personality inventory devised by Washington University psychiatrist Robert Cloninger, author of "Feeling Good: The Science of Well-Being."

Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

The Animal Spirit Newsletter - Issue #2 -  4/21/03-4/27/03

Making Food Sacred - Offering our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco, March 28, 1968

The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."

Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,

patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah

Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

Go here to follow the simple system for offering foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

BBQ marianated curd steaks:
Wonderfully succulent and sticky, barbecued curd steaks are delicious hot or cold. Just in case it is still too cold to BBQ, this recipe has been converted so you can make them in the oven.

Ingredients:
8 table spoons tomato ketchup
1 table spoon Japanese soy sauce
1 table spoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tea spoons cider vinegar
1 table spoon olive oil
2 tea spoons grainy mustard
1 tbsp clear honey
2 tea spoons molasses sugar
juice of 1 small orange
2 tea spoons hing
2.5cm/1in piece fresh ginger root, chopped and squeezed
2kg/4 1/2lb skillet fried curd steaks
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Citric acid or lemon juice to curdle milk to make curd and whey

Method:
Make the curd steaks by boiling 10 litres of fresh farmhouse milk - pure cows milk (not the homogenized/sterilized white water stuff). Bring the milk to the boil. Add your curdling agent slowly, be it Citric acid or lemon juice. Cover a colender with a thin cotton cloth (old dhoti material is excellent). Pour in the curds and catch the whey in a pot underneath - you may like to use it in a soup or vegetable dish later or to cool it and make a drink with lemon and mint....  Now allow the curds in the cloth to  drain for few minutes, then take a pot with water in it and place on top of the curds to form a weight to press it.. Leave for half an hour or an hour.
Cut the curd into pieces about 4 inches X  2 inches by half inch thick.
Taking a shallow skillet place a chunk of butter 50 grams, and melt it at a high heat in the skillet and now add three or four curd blocks and shallow fry them for five to ten minutes until they go brown on the outside - you will have to turn them over with a metal spatula or chan. Put them to one side.
Mix together all the ingredients except the curd steaks. Put the curd steaks in a shallow dish. Add the marinade, turning the curd steaks into it to coat well. Cover with cling film (food wrap) and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 3 hours or overnight, turning when you remember.
Allow the curd steaks to come to room temperature before cooking.
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4.
Put the curd steaks and marinade in a large roasting pan. Cover with foil and roast for 30 minutes. Test by inserting a skewer into the curd steaks.
Remove the foil and roast for 5 - 10 minutes more. Once the foil is off, the sauce will reduce and stick to the curd steaks.
Offer and serve hot, warm or cold, depending on the season of the year - hot is still good all year round.

Basic White Bread
Nothing fancy and very few ingredients, but that is how it all actually started. The same can't be said for what comes later.

Makes 1 Loaf (doubling the ingredients will make two and so on....)
Ingredients:
500g/1lb 2oz strong white flour
15g/½oz salt
small handful of brown sugar
55ml/2fl oz olive oil
20g/¾oz fresh yeast (1 tsp Edmonds dried yeast in the packet)
275ml/9fl oz water

Method:
Mix the all ingredients in a large bowl taking care not to put yeast on the top of the salt. Alternately (and especially if using packeted dried yeast) put the yeast into a separate bowl with warm water (must be warm, not hot, hot will kill the yeast) with the handful of brown sugar and allow to rise. Leave ten minutes or so to rise. Then add to the flour.
Knead well with your hands and knuckles until the dough is elastic, smooth and shiny. Cover with a piece of cling film
(food wrap) and leave to rise for 1 hour. I personally use a damp cloth rather than cling film but both work......
Line a bread baking tin with baking parchment and mould the dough into a sausage shape and place in the tin. Or alternatively, and more traditionally, smear some oil or butter all over the inside of the bread tin, then taking a little flour dust where the oil is, this will make it very easy to come out of the baking tin when cooked.
Preheat your oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7, then leave the dough to rise for a further 30 minutes to 1 hour in the bread tin.
Place the dough in the tin in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes. Best is if you don't open the oven door at all, no not even to see if its risen - no not even once okay. Because you oiled the tin and put flour there, the barrier caused by that should make the cooked bread just pop out nicely. Remove the bread from the tin, tap the bottom with your knuckles - if it sounds hollow, it's ready. Cool on a wire rack.

Optional ideas; offer it a little while later in door step slices with heaps of butter. Or leave to cool entirely and serve with any meal offered.

Cream Cheese & Basil Bruschetta

Although designed for 1 person, you can easily double-up on the ingredients to produce a delicously tasty starter.

Serves 1
Ingredients:
1 slice of bread
2 tbsp cream cheese
2 tbsp basil, chopped
salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 small handful of rocket (the leafy vegetable)
olive oil, for drizzling
1 fig, sliced,for garnish
For the garnish:
30g/1oz walnuts
2 tsp olive oil

Method:
Place a griddle pan on the hob, and when hot, place the slice of bread on it, and griddle for 1-2 minutes each side, or until nicely coloured.
In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese and the basil, season to taste, and then spread on to the griddled slice of bread.
Place the rocket leaves on top of the cream cheese mix. Drizzle with olive oil, and top with the sliced fig. For the garnish, heat the oil in a small pan, add the walnuts, and fry for 3-4 minutes, on a gentle heat.
Serve with the bruschetta (bread).

The Pane Surprise (Filled Bread)

Makes 1 Loaf
Ingredients:
For the Bread:
1kg/2.25lb strong white flour
510ml/17fl oz warm water
120ml/4fl oz olive oil
25g/1oz yeast
25g/1oz salt
For the Filling:
2 tbsp tomato purée
2 tsp mixed herbs
1 small tin chopped tomatoes
salt and pepper
a large handful of cheese, preferably Emmenthal

Method:
To make the bread, sift the flour, yeast and salt into a bowl, adding in the water and the olive oil. Knead the mixture on a worktop with your hands, blending all of the ingredients thoroughly until it forms a dough.
Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with cling film (food wrap)(or damp  tea towel)  and leave to one side for an hour to rise.
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7.
To prepare the bread's filling, mix the tomato purée, mixed herbs, chopped tomatoes, salt and pepper in a bowl.
When the bread is ready, flatten the dough out into a round. Place the filling onto one side of the dough. Cover the filling with the cheese.
Bring the other side of the bread over, so that it forms a flat crescent shape, with the filling sandwiched in between two layers of the bread.
Bake the bread in the oven for 30 minutes, until it becomes brown, turning it half way through the cooking. Leave it to cool almost completely, then offer and serve.

The Ultimate Hot Date (Baked Dates and Figs)

A simple but scrumptious dessert - luscious fresh dates and figs baked with honey and Middle Eastern spices.

Serves 3-4
Ingredients:
butter, for greasing
250g/9oz fresh figs
150g/6oz fresh dates
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground allspice
juice of 1 lemon
4 tbsp clear honey
crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream, to serve

Method:
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas 7. Grease a shallow baking dish.
Slice the figs in half from top to bottom. Prick the skin with a fork.
Slice the dates in half lengthways and remove the stones.
Arrange the dates and figs alternately in the dish.
Sprinkle over the spices and lemon juice. Drizzle with the honey.
Bake for 20 minutes or until the honey starts to bubble.
Serve hot with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.

Pudding and Nectar Toffee Sauce

Ingredients:
50g/2oz light muscovado sugar
50g/2oz pecan nuts, chopped
100g/4oz ready-to-eat, dried apricots, chopped
Pecan nut halves, to garnish

For the almond base
75g/3oz butter or vegan margarine
60ml/2floz maple syrup or soft brown sugar
15g/1tbsp Soya flour mixed with 30g/2tbsp water
75g/3oz ground almonds
25g/1oz Soya flour
2.5g/½ teaspoon baking powder
few drops of vanilla essence

For the toffee sauce
200g/7oz light muscovado sugar
90ml/3floz double cream or Soya cream
100g/4oz unsalted butter or vegan margarine
2.5ml/½ teaspoon vanilla essence
25g/1oz chopped pecan nuts

Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.

To make the topping, mix the sugar, chopped pecans and dried apricots together. Divide equally between 4 well greased, individual ramekins.

Cream the butter or margarine for the base with the maple syrup or sugar. Add the egg substitute or Soya flour paste and mix well. Stir in the almonds, Soya flour, baking powder and vanilla essence. Spoon the mixture into the ramekins, place on a baking tray and bake in the pre-heated oven for 20-30 minutes.

To make the sauce, put the sugar in a saucepan and use a wooden spoon to crush any lumps. Add the cream and butter (or Soya cream and vegan margarine) and stir together over a gentle heat until the butter has melted.
Bring to the boil and simmer for 2-3 minutes until toffee-colored.
Remove from the heat, then stir in the vanilla essence and chopped pecans.

Turn each pudding out on to a serving plate. Decorate with pecan halves. Spoon a little toffee sauce around the puddings and serve immediately.

Brownie Pudding Cake
This is something totally new for me - making a cake in a slow-cooker. If you try this, let me know how it turns out!

Serves 6-8
Ingredients
1/2 cup/4oz brown sugar
3/4 cup/6fl oz water
2 Tablespoons carob or cocoa
2-1/2 cups brownie mix (half of a 21.5 oz. pkg.) ?????
1 tablespoon yogurt
1 tablespoon condensed milk
1/4 cup/2oz peanut butter
1 tablespoon soft margarine
1/4 cup/2fl oz water
1/4 to 1/2 cup/2-4 oz milk chocolate chips
1/4 to 1/2 cup/2-4 oz chopped walnuts

Method:
Combine 3/4 cup (6fl oz) water, brown sugar and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. In the meantime, combine the remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Whisk together or mix well with a spoon. Spread the batter evenly in the bottom of a lightly buttered slow cooker. Pour boiling mixture over the batter. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours; turn heat off and let stand for another 30 minutes.
Spoon into dessert dishes while warm. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do some pro-veg works like the following:

Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.

Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Four Wives parable:
http://www.hknet.org.nz/4wives.pps

Every year in Mayapur, the devotees cut sugarcane, press it and cook down the juice and press it into gur. One year, the sugarcane was stacked outside the kitchen near the grhastha-asrama. Many of the boys and girls from the gurukula would come and take pieces of sugarcane, chew them, and spit the pulp here and there. On one occasion, these spittings had been swept into a pile and left near the stack of unoffered sugarcane. Prabhupada saw the pile of spittings and he began chastising the devotees, most of whom were Bengalis. He told them that although they called themselves Hindus, they had come to the temple just to go to hell. He asked them what had become of their culture that they would leave spittings near Krsna's bhoga.

As Prabhupada chastised the devotees, a two-year-old toddler came walking by eating a piece of sugarcane. Seeing this, a sixty-year-old Bengali devotee grabbed the sugarcane from the child's hand and chastised the child, who immediately began to cry. Prabhupada said, "Ustadi boca: although your eyes were blind, you are now the coach."

From Prabhupad uvachas - Remembering Srila Prabhupada - Little Drops of Nectar in Mayapur, Jayapataka Swami, interview.

A small Gurukuli boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital.
When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was a nurse said 'No change yet'.
Bill was visiting a friend in the hospital.  He had recently quit smoking and was chewing on an unlit cigar when he got on the elevator.  A woman on the elevator said to him with a snarl, "Sir! There's no smoking in here!"

"I'm not smoking lady."  replied Bill.

"But you have a cigar in your mouth!" the woman said.

"Lady," Bill answered, "I've got on Jockey shorts, too, but I'm not riding a horse!"

He didn't tell his mother that he ate some glue.
His lips were sealed.

A high-school student came home one night rather depressed.

"What's the matter, son." asked his mother.

"Aw, gee," said the boy, "it's my grades. They're all wet."

"What do you mean 'all wet?'" asked his mother.

"You know," he replied, "below C-level."

The aspiring psychiatrists were attending their first class on emotional extremes.
"Just to establish some parameters," said the professor to the student from Arkansas, "What is the opposite of joy?"

"Sadness," said the student.

And the opposite of depression?" he asked of the young lady from Oklahoma.

"Elation," said she.

"And you sir," he said to the young man from Texas, "how about the opposite of woe?"

The Texan replied, "Sir, I believe that would be giddy-up."

A lady was walking down the street to work and she saw a parrot on a perch in front of a pet store.

The parrot said to her, "Hey lady, you are really ugly."

Well, the lady is furious! She stormed past the store to her work. On the way home she saw the same parrot and it said to her, "Hey lady, you are really ugly."

She was incredibly ticked now. The next day the same parrot again said to her, "Hey lady, you are really ugly."

The lady was so ticked that she went into the store and said that she would sue the store and kill the bird. The store manager replied, "That's not good," and promised the parrot wouldn't say it again.

When the lady walked past the store that day after work the parrot called to her, "Hey lady."

She paused and said, "Yes?"

The bird said, "You know."

Confiding in a co-worker, I told her about a problem in our office and my fear that I would lose my job.  She was concerned and said she would pray for me.  I know she keeps a list of the ten people she believes need her prayers the most, so I asked if she had room for me on her list.
"Oh, yes," she replied.  "Three of the people have died."

My brother, a university student, had been cramming for a biology exam. During a break he asked my mother, a former biology major,
"How many red blood cells does a body make in one second?"

"One million?" Mom guessed.
"Nope!  Two million!  my brother chortled.  "You were off by a million. A whole million."

"Well, that's your point of view," my mother responded.

"What other point of view is there?" my brother asked her.

"That I was off by only a half-second," she replied coolly.

true anecdote from READER'S DIGEST

The ways of this material world - strange but true

A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in bed.

She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wiped a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee.

"What's the matter, dear?" she whispers as she steps into the room, "Why are you down here at this time of night?"

The husband looks up from his coffee."Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 16?" he asks solemnly.

"Yes I do," she replies.

The husband paused. The words were not coming easily. "Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car making love?"

"Yes, I remember," said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.

The husband continued, "Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, 'Either you marry my daughter, or I'll send you to jail for 20 years?"

"I remember that too," she replied softly.

He wiped another tear from his cheek and said, "I would have gotten out today."

Thanx to Shahin in Auckland 4 that one.

From the realm of the truly bizarre, but true (it's originally an Associated Press news story)...

At the 1994 annual awards dinner given for Forensic Science, AAFS president Dr. Don Harper Mills astounded his audience with the legal complications of a bizarre death.  Here is the story:

On March 23, 1994 the medical examiner viewed the body of Ronald Opus and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound to the head. The decedent had jumped from the top of a ten story building intending to commit suicide.
He left a note to that effect indicating his despondency. As he fell past  the ninth floor, his life was interrupted by a shotgun blast passing  through a window, which killed him instantly. Neither the shooter nor the decedent was aware that a safety net had been installed just below at the eighth floor level to protect some building workers and that Ronald Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide the way he had planned.

Ordinarily, Dr. Mills continued, "a person who sets out to commit suicide and ultimately succeeds, even though the mechanism might not be what he intended" is still defined as committing suicide. That Mr. Opus was shot on the way to certain death nine stories below at street level, but that this suicide attempt probably would not have been successful because of  the safety net, caused the medical examiner to feel that he had a homicide on his hands.

The room on the ninth floor from whence the shotgun blast emanated was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing vigorously, and he was threatening her with a shotgun. The man was so upset that when he pulled the trigger he completely missed his wife and the bullet went through the window striking Mr. Opus.

When one intends to kill subject A, but kills subject B in the attempt, one is guilty of the murder of subject B. When confronted with the murder charge, the old man and his wife were both adamant. They both said they thought the shotgun was unloaded. The old man said it was his long standing habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun.  He had no intention to murder her.

Therefore the killing of Mr. Opus appeared to be an accident, that is, the gun had been accidentally loaded.  Wrong.

The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old couple's son loading the shotgun about six weeks prior to the fatal accident. It transpired that the old lady had cut off her son's financial support and the son, knowing the propensity of his father to use the shotgun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would shoot his mother.

The case now becomes one of murder on the part of the son for the death of Ronald Opus.

Now comes the exquisite twist.

Further investigation revealed that the son was in fact Ronald Opus.

He had become increasingly despondent over the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother's murder.  This led him to jump off the ten story building on March 23rd, only to be killed by a shotgun blast passing through the ninth story window. The son had actually murdered himself so the medical examiner closed the case as a suicide.

This story, like the son, has no morals.

Thanx to Shyamasundar prabhu ACBSP for this lil' beauty.

Why do they lock gas station bathrooms?

If you've stooped to their level and ended up in hell with someone due to having a like mentality, and you're still mad at them, where do you tell them to go?

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has screwed him for ten million bucks.  This bookkeeper is deaf.  It was considered an occupational benefit, and why he got the job in the first place, since it was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not be able to hear anything he'd ever have to testify about in court.

When the Godfather goes to shakedown the bookkeeper about his missing $10 million bucks, he brings along his attorney, who knows sign language.

The Godfather asks the bookkeeper: "Where is the 10 million bucks you embezzled from me?"

The attorney, using sign language, asks the bookkeeper where the 10 million dollar is hidden.

The bookkeeper signs back:  "I don't know what you are talking about."

The attorney tells the Godfather: "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."

That's when the Godfather pulls out a 9 mm pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper's temple, cocks it, and says: "Ask him again!"

The attorney signs to the underling:  "He'll kill you for sure if you don't tell him!"

The bookkeeper signs back: "OK!  You win!  The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo's backyard in Queens!"

The Godfather asks the attorney:  "Well, what'd he say?"

The attorney replies:  "He says you don't have the guts to pull the trigger.

Don't ya just love lawyers?

Thanks Shyam' ACBSP for that one - an oldie but a gem.

My sister has the courage, but not always the skills, to tackle any home repair project.

For example, in her garage are pieces of a lawnmower she once tried to fix.
So I wasn't surprised the day my other sister, Pam, and I found our sister attacking her vacuum cleaner with a screwdriver.

"I can't get this thing to cooperate," she explained when she saw us.

Pam suggested, "Why don't you drag it out to the garage and show it the lawnmower, that may change it's mind.....?"

When I was just beginng to take an interest in the opposite sex I remember my slightly prejudicial Mom telling me, "Son, when you grow up, you can marry any girl you please."

Later on, as a young man, I learned the fallacy of that statement, when it became quite apparent to me that I was having one hell of a hard time trying to please any of them.

Moral:
.....are you kidding, you think I have a death wish !!!!

.....yes dear coming..... got to go now........

.......and always remember (don't forget...)

SMILE IT MAKES THE WORLD WONDER WHAT YOU'VE BEEN UP TO ;)
