Hare Krishna. ISKCON Food for Life is working
to give assistance to those
who are suffering from this immense disaster.
Please read more on the FFL website, http://www.ffl.org.
We pray that the Lord will comfort those who are in need or who have lost loved ones.
I am sure you are all aware of the recent earthquake
off the coast of Indonesia and the subsequent Tsunami waves that have devastated
Sri Lanka, India and Africa, and have taken the lives of more than 125,000
people. The death rate is rising by the hour, and Food for Life is
responding to this disaster with all the resources we have available in
several countries involved.
We will bring you more information on our efforts
soon.
If you would like to help our relief efforts donations may be given through the web http://www.ffl.org, or the Auckland temple office can forward on your behalf, or see Iskcon Sri Lankan appeal below.
Your servant in Lord Krishna's service,
Thank you for your friendship, from FFL Global Director, Priyavrata das
Mahakarta Dasa (Prabhupada's disciple) is the temple president
of ISKCON Sri Lanka, and he is the coordinator of this Food for life relief
program for the tsunami victims.
The program started from 31st December
2004. The Temple President has gone to Trincomalee (worst affected area)
this morning to directly supervise the program with some congregational
devotees where prasadam will be cooked and distributed to the victims,
beginning from 5000 plates per day and increasing rapidly to 20,000. We
are starting from Trincomalee and it is the worst affected area in Sri
Lanka.
The rate of prasadam distribution is now more than 30,000 per day, providing cooked meals and fresh drinking water as well as some medical aide http://www.ffl.org See other articles in this issue.
This food for life program will continue for a long period and the program will expand to the other affected areas in the country and for this your help is very much needed.
Sri Lanka was among the worst affected by the recent earthquake in Sumatra (Indonesia) and the subsequent tidal wave which has affected many countries in this region. The tide was 40ft high. In the recent news this morning, the death rate has increased to more than 25000 and many thousands are still missing. Over a million are refugees. The refugees have taken shelter in hospitals, schools and temples. Hospitals have been washed out along with the patients and doctors. To continue this, we need assistance and we have to also go to different affected areas. Another rising problem is the thousands of orphans.
His Holiness Indradyumna swami and over 45 other Iskcon devotees are now in the area feeding over 30,000 prasadam meals a day and helping to heal the disrupted lives of the orphans.
So the food for life project by ISKCON (Sri Lanka) should provide a minimum of at least ten thousand plate per day or it will be insufficient for the victims.
How to donate
100% of the donations will be given to the tsunami victims. We will also supply medical items, sleeping mats, bed sheets etc as we receive.
We need assistance from you also for this humanitarian service. Please donate generously for this cause and inform your friends to donate for this purpose. Contact us for further information.
Mahakarta Dasa (Prabhupada's disciple) is the temple president of ISKCON Sri Lanka, and he is the coordinator of this relief program for the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS
Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2 - Contents of the Gita Summarized
TEXT 66
nasti buddhir ayuktasya
na cayuktasya bhavana
na cabhavayatah santir
asantasya kutah sukhamWORD FOR WORD
na asti--there cannot be; buddhih--transcendental intelligence; ayuktasya--of one who is not connected (with Krsna consciousness); na--not; ca--and; ayuktasya--of one devoid of Krsna consciousness; bhavana--fixed mind (in happiness); na--not; ca--and; abhavayatah--of one who is not fixed; santih--peace; asantasya--of the unpeaceful; kutah--where is; sukham--happiness.
TRANSLATIONOne who is not connected with the Supreme [in Krsna consciousness can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?
PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada:
Unless one is in Krsna consciousness, there is no possibility of peace. So it is confirmed in the Fifth Chapter (5.29) that when one understands that Krsna is the only enjoyer of all the good results of sacrifice and penance, that He is the proprietor of all universal manifestations, and that He is the real friend of all living entities, then only can one have real peace. Therefore, if one is not in Krsna consciousness, there cannot be a final goal for the mind. Disturbance is due to want of an ultimate goal, and when one is certain that Krsna is the enjoyer, proprietor and friend of everyone and everything, then one can, with a steady mind, bring about peace. Therefore, one who is engaged without a relationship with Krsna is certainly always in distress and is without peace, however much he may make a show of peace and spiritual advancement in life. Krsna consciousness is a self-manifested peaceful condition which can be achieved only in relationship with Krsna.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's
diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, or sometimes from a letter,
but still nectar...)
June 16
Srila Prabhupada told us that he played football
as a youth and was secretary of the club. He was also remembering his childhood
friends. "For marriage they would trace the genealogy for seven generations.
It is prescribed that there can be no family ties within these seven generations.
In the West there is no genealogy-no family-it is dog society."
"If it were not for you, our position would be
hopeless," I said.
"I could understand you had no family love, anything.
You were very nice boy. You were selling so well, you encouraged me to
print Back to Godhead with Dai Nippon. Only by your encouragement. Otherwise
we were printing only two thousand, three thousand. Now they are printing
my words 'Prabhupada Speaks Out.' It is very good. They should come to
their senses. Before me everyone said, 'Yes, you are good.' Perhaps this
is the first time from the Eastern side they are getting such a chastisement.
They are not even civilized, what to speak of knowledge.
"Western civilization is to make something new
always. There is a nice house-destroy it and again build. And in Los Angeles
with the old temple-there was no need of breaking. D.L. Roy has written
a song, 'Put your head down, your legs up; you must do something new, no
matter how odd or ugly or rubbish it is.' But our philosophy is nothing
new. Stick to the old. Childish means 'cannot stick to one principle.'
"Therefore I say the Western civilization is
childish. One car design, then finished and next year a different one.
A devil's workshop. Entanglement in useless work. Chewing the chewed.
Am I right about this? So remain Krsna conscious.
Stick to the principles. You are making definite progress. I can see. Do
you feel?" Prabhupada asked each of us. "When you eat, no one has to ask
if you are satisfied."
"My Guru Maharaja called Ramakrishna 'murkha
pujari'-a foolish, illiterate priest. Any quotation attributed to him was
actually made by his disciples after his death."
"In my horoscope, it was written that after seventy
years, he will go outside India and establish so many temples. Guru Maharaja
foretold this before my Godbrothers in 1935: 'He will do the needful. No
one requires to help him.' Sridhara Maharaja was present. I left India
hopeless. I did not want to come back. I went with the intention, 'I shall
do this job!' In 1970, there was a conspiracy. I do not wish to remember
it. So I came back. I called you from Paris to take me away from Los Angeles.
Otherwise, I would have made Los Angeles my headquarters. My plan was like
that, but Krsna's plan was different. When I was leaving Los Angeles, I
was not happy. I said to Dvarakadisa, 'You have brought me here; now why
are You dragging me?' Krsna wanted me to leave Vrndavana. 'You were retired,
I will give you a better place.' And He has given a temple one hundred
times better than Los Angeles."
After lunch we showed Prabhupada the map drawn
according to the description of Jambudvipa in the Fifth Canto. "It was
not possible for me to write as a layman on such subjects. Someone [Krsna]
had to help me."

Room Conversation -- November 3, 1973, New Delhi
Listen to the entire lecture on-line:
http://prabhupadavani.org/Conversations/RAMfiles_CNV/CNV097.ram
Prabhupada: Yes. [break] It is there?
Pradyumna: Yes.
sat-sangan mukta-duhsango
hatum notsahate budhah
kirtyamanam yaso yasya
sakrd akarnya rocanam
Prabhupada: Where it is quoted from?
Pradyumna: Quoted from Bhagavatam, Srimad Bhagavatam, 1.10.11.
Prabhupada: Eh?
Pradyumna: First Canto, Tenth Chapter, Eleventh Verse.
Prabhupada: Make note there.
Pradyumna: Translation?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Pradyumna: "The intelligent, who have understood the Supreme Lord in
association with pure devotees and have become freed from bad materialistic
association can never avoid hearing the glories of the Lord even though
they have heard them only once."
Prabhupada: Hm. So this will protect you from the influence of maya.
Read that again.
Pradyumna: Sanskrit or translation.
Prabhupada: Translation.
Pradyumna: "The intelligent, who have understood the Supreme Lord in
association with pure devotees and have become freed..."
Prabhupada: "In association with pure devotees." So if you are karmis,
then where is the..., What is the value of this association? Sat-sanga.
Sat-sanga means assembly, discussion. Bodhayantah parasparam, tusyanti
ca ramanti ca. If you are not interested in association, discussion, then
you are finished. So... karmis, they are fools and rascals. When you have
got this center, it is not that you should be engaged from morning till
you go to bed for sense gratification. That is not life. That is karmi's
life. You have no time for sat-sanga, for association. You cannot make
any progress by this sort of karmi's life. We have to work for organization,
but not that whole day and night engaged and no sat-sanga. That is a misguided
policy, and it will spoil the whole structure. In Los Angeles, they regularly
assemble during arati and class. If this regulative principle is lost,
then you are karmis. They must come back by six o'clock, suspending all
other duties, and assemble by seven o'clock. Joint mess program is not
good. "You bring some money, you bring some money and spend us jointly
for eating, sleeping." That is called joint mess. You know the joint mess?
This word? What is that, meaning?
Brahmananda: Well, it means... I thought it had something to do with
civil servants, where they all live in a dormitory and eat in a large hall.
Prabhupada: Yes, yes.
Brahmananda: And they all contribute...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Brahmananda: ...part of their salary.
Prabhupada: So if you make that association, that will not help you.
Joint mess, dormitory. Or joint family. Just like in India. There are five
brothers. They're earning. Father and mother is the leader. They're handing
over the money, and the father, mother managing. That is Indian system,
a joint family. So joint family or joint mess, the same thing. So if you
make like that, a center, then it is no good. You must get spiritual strength.
Karmi strength will not help you. What they are doing in Babar(?) Road,
these girls?
Guru dasa: They're preparing some srngara for Deity.
Prabhupada: Why not here? Why go to Babar Road, spend twenty rupees?
Guru dasa: According to them, that sometimes they have to go in the
center of town.
Prabhupada: Nobody has intelligence. It will not, it will not stay.
It will be spoiled. Joint mess organization. In Los Angeles, they're also
doing business. They're going to sell books. But regulative principle is
observed. Huge expenditure they have got. No center is so improved as Los
Angeles. We have purchased six houses. And I wanted immediately two lakhs,
immediately sent. You cannot pay. You simply want to take. In India, nobody
can pay. If I want two lakhs, nobody can pay. But all this money have been
taken from U.S.A. I asked Bali Mardana, I asked Karandhara. They paid me
for this Bombay affair, sixteen, eighteen lakhs. [break] ...and breathing
also does not stop. It goes very slow. Therefore he cannot be immortal.
And Bhagavad-gita proposes, that is wonderful thing, if you can stop death.
And whole spiritual life means how to stop death. That is Bhagavata's instruction,
"Don't accept guru, don't accept father, don't accept, or don't be father,
don't be mother, don't be, if you cannot stop death." Either you don't
accept, or don't become. Just like they want guru. So don't accept a guru
who cannot stop your death. And from guru's side, it is advised, "Don't
become guru if you cannot stop the death of your disciple." This is Bhagavatam's
statement. So our Krsna consciousness movement is to stop death, live eternally
with Krsna, go back to home, back to Godhead. This is our movement. So
our guru gives us this opportunity, no more death. Tyaktva... After leaving
this body, you don't accept any more material body. And if you don't accept
material body, then there is no death. As soon as your spiritual, you remain
in spiritual body, there is no death. There is no birth also. Death is
concomitant where birth is there. If the death is stopped, then there is
no birth. And if there is no birth, there is no disease, there is no old
age. This is the process. So birth, death, old age, disease can be stopped
only by Krsna consciousness. So if you don't like to be Krsna conscious
then what is the use of becoming your disciple, and if the guru, if he
cannot stop your death, birth and death, then what is your becoming guru?
So 'mrtatvaya kalpate. Yam hi na vyathayanty ete purusam purusarsabha.
Find out this verse. Yam hi na vyathayanty ete.
Srutakirti: Y-a-m?
Prabhupada: Yeah, y-a-m. Yam hi... Get this light on. [break] ...there
is birth and death and old age and... That is liberation. That is siddhi.
That is perfection. These rascals are making plans, material plans. Jawaharlal
Nehru made plan of this New Delhi. But he is kicked out. "Go out!" And
now he has become a dog in Switzerland.
Srutakirti: In Sweden.
Prabhupada: In Sweden.
Syamasundara: What?
Srutakirti: He's one of two dogs in Sweden.
Prabhupada: Yes. Sridhara Maharaja told me. Some astrologer has...
Brahmananda: He's taken his birth there.
Syamasundara: Ah.
Prabhupada: So they, these so-called leaders are so fools that they...
Therefore they don't believe in next life. Because that is very horrible
for them. But the next life is there. Just like we, we, we have our next
life. We had our previous life, then now another life, another life. So
this simple thing they cannot understand. Nature is controlling this, next
life, next life. Otherwise why so many varieties of life? So they have
no brain. They are simply making plan for the fifty years duration of life.
That's all. And even from practical point of view, suppose you are constructing
a very nice house, and if you know that next day you'll be kicked out,
you'll die, will you do that? But it is a fact. Next day or two days after,
you'll die. That's a fact. So first of all, make arrangement that you'll
not die, you'll be able to live here. That is their foolishness.
Syamasundara: Sometimes they take refuge in the idea that: "My family
will live on," or "My species..." or "my..."
Prabhupada: That's...
Syamasundara: "...children..."
Prabhupada: ...all right. The family will live on not forever. They'll
live also, say, for few days. Just we go sometimes in... Just like in England,
the castles are there, very old castle, thousand years, two thousand...
Even this Westminster Abbey and palace, but which king has lived for there
permanently? And now, if you know more, if the king has, by his work, become
something else. Not necessarily he'll become a king in that house. He may
become a dog there. This science they do not know. And they are proud of
their education, culture. Suppose we are constructing the Vrndavana temple
or Bombay temple. It is also certain we shall not live, but our attempt
to construct that temple will be recorded in Krsna.
Syamasundara: (indistinct)

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY
We should always remember that our body is not
for sense gratification; it is for Krishna's service
only. And to render very good sound service to
Krishna we should not neglect the upkeep of the body.

Taking grass between my teeth, I pray repeatedly that I may become a
speck of dust at Sri Rupa Goswami’s lotus feet, birth after birth.
(Raghunath Das Goswami, Muktacarita.)
"So far as your question about controversy amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja, that is a fact. But this controversy is not material. Just like in a national program, different political parties are sometimes in conflict and make propaganda against each other, but their central point is always service to the country. Similarly, amongst the disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati there may be some controversy, but the central point is how to preach the mission of His Divine Grace. If the central point is fixed up then there is no harm in such controversy. Every individual being must have his opinion; that is the significance of individuality, but all such differences of opinions must coincide in Krishna. In the battlefield of Kuruksetra were Arjuna and Bhisma who were fighting with one another, and because Krishna was on the side of Arjuna, sometimes Bhisma pierced the body of Krishna also with arrows. But still they remained the greatest devotees of the Lord, and Krishna accepted the friendship of Arjuna just as He accepted the inimical arrows of Bhisma in the same loving spirit. So you do not be disturbed by such controversial points. Better you engage your mind very seriously in the matter of the service entrusted upon you. That will make you progressive in Krishna Consciousness." - Letter to Mandali Bhadra - Los Angeles 28 July 1969
In SrImad rAmAyaNam ayodhyA kANDam 3-36, SrImad vAlmIki compares Lord rAma to the rising Sun:
'adAsanavaram prApya vyadIpayada rAghava: |
svayeva prabhayA merum udaye vimalo ravi: ||
"When He reached that great Asanam, He made it shine with His own luster;
like the mEru mountain that shines from the rising Sun's bright rays".
Fear arises when a living entity misidentifies himself as the material body because of absorption in the external, illusory energy of the Lord. When the living entity thus turns away from the supreme Lord, he also forgets his own constitutional position as a servant of the Lord. This bewildering, fearful condition is effected by potency for illusion, called maya.
-- Sri Kavi Rsi (Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.2.37)
In vedic literature Krsna is the central point of attraction, and His
service is our activity. To attain the platform of love of Krsna is life's
ultimate goal. Therefore Krsna, Krsna's service, and love of Krsna are
the three great riches of life.
-- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-lila 20.1.143)
As a mass of clouds does not know the powerful influence of the wind,
a person engaged in material consciousness does not know the powerful strength
of the time factor, by which he is being carried.
-- Lord Kapiladeva (Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.30.1)
Logic and arguments are insufficient to understand the absolute Truth.
-- Srila Vyasadeva (Brahma-sutra 2.1.11)
One should try to keep himself satisfied in any condition of life -
whether distress or happiness - which is offered by the supreme will. A
person who endures in this way is able to cross over the darkness of nesciemce
very easily.
-- Sri Narada Muni (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.8.33)

"IN EVERY TOWN AND VILLAGE the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna shall be heard. This was the forecast made by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu almost 500 years ago in India. Today, as the Hare Krishna Mantra -- Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare -- resounds in Bombay and New York, Nairobi and Sydney, and in Paris and Hong Kong, the prophecy of Lord Caitanya stands fulfilled. The universal import of this "Samkirtan Movement" (the congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord) was expressed by Lord Caitanya as follows:
"Glory to the Sri Krishna Samkirtan which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years together. Thus the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death, is extinguished. The Samkirtan Movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction Moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge, it increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it helps us to have a taste of the full nectar for which we are always anxious."

Agama Tantra and the Vaishnava Samskaras as a way of life:
Recently I was asked, "Don't you find it an inconvenience to always be checking to see when is the right time to do this or the best time for that?"
In simple terms my answer was and still is; if you go to the bus or railway station or airport it is probably an intelligent venture to enquire about the times and routes of vehicles than to just hope that one will be along soon, or one is going in your direction.
There are subtle influences in the Universe that, for thousands of years gone by, advanced cultures have honoured, respected and utilised. Before the corruption of the Vedik literatures by the Christian and Moslem invaders to India all these things were used; Ayurvedik Medicine; Vedik Astrology; etc. Today there's a rennaisance among many to revive these arts.
We have been trained and studied to be able to provide these services. See some of my sites:

"The religious principles taught by Mohammed and Jesus Christ are similar to the religious principles taught by Vaishnava sects. Buddhism and Jainism are similar to Saiva-dharma. This is scientific consideration of truths regarding religious principles. Those who consider their own religious principles as real dharma and others religious principles as irreligion or subreligion are unable to ascertain the truth due to being influenced by prejudice. Actually religious principles followed by people in general are different only due to the different qualifications of the practitioners, but the constitutional religious principles of all living entities are one." Food For Life Global helps Tsunami victims
http://www.ffl.org/html/ffl_tsunami_relief.html
Indradyumna Swami from food distribution in Sri Lankha
http://blog.world-sankirtan.net/IDS/
Silver lining in a dark cloud:
January 2005 - Sri Lanka
I have been quite moved by what I have seen and experianced during my two weeks of disaster relief work here in Sri Lanka. I have travelled the world as a monk ( sannyasi ) for 35 years and have seen many disturbing situations; war in Grozny, the aftermath of war in Sarajevo, hunger in Sudan. But to echo the recent words of Colin Powell, I have never seen anything as devastating as the tsunami disaster here in Sri Lanka.
I traveled along the coast from Colombo to Galle yesterday and saw devastation worse than war. Whole villages had disappeared. Hardly a home was left standing. Bridges were destroyed, train tracks uprooted. Everything was rubble - for hundred of kilometers. I was stunned by the force of the Tsunami wave.
Myself and party were going to do food relief in the refugee camps. When we arrived the army assisted us. However, I soon saw that the refugees, for the most part, were not hungry. Soon after the disaster the government, aided by generous donations from around the world, had began providing food for the victims of the tragedy. I inquired further and learned that there is no scarcity of food in any of the refugee camps throughout the country.
Neither have there been any epidemics. There are medical personel available in all refugee camps.
I must say that it is a credit to the people of the world, who reacted so swiftly and with such generosity, that hunger and disease have been avoided here in Sri Lanka. I have heard that the situation is the same in the other 10 countries affected by the Tsunami. It is wonderful that so many barriers have been broken down ( at least temporarily ) as a result of the disaster. I believe it is unprecedented. If only such sentiments of cooperation could continue in the world. History has shown they often don’t.
I believe the real issue now at hand - as regards relief work - is the many orphaned children in this country. Personally, I am redirecting ISKCON’s efforts here from food relief, to taking care of orphaned children. It simply breaks my heart to see them crying in the refugee camps.
Here in Colombo, our local Hare Krsna temple runs a successful orphanage with 100 children. My efforts will now be to raise funds to expand that orphange so that it can accept another 100 children whose parents died in the disaster. I will even request the orphanage to take several children I have personally met in my travels; kids whose big eyes, sad faces and desire for love have captured my heart.
I am not sure what the media is reporting these days, as I have no access to television. But I have been to the ravaged coast and cried my tears of sympathy for the dead, the dying and the injured. I have walked through the refugee camps, spoken to the people, heard their stories and given them my shoulder to lean on. And significantly, I seen first hand the result of unprecedented world sympathy for the victims. People are being taken care of - as best one can under such circumstances. Food is here, medicine is here and homes are slowly being built for the people to return to. Of course, no one can replace their loved ones. And only time may help them to recover from the trauma they experienced.
I am leaving here soon. I will take with me an enduring impression of the cruel face that material nature sometimes shows, but the assurance that sometimes, if ever so rarely, the human race can work together in a spirit of love to help each other. This can only be God’s grace.
Yours,
Indradyumna Swami

When you feel you may have given your all and all, for the pleasure of guru and Krishna, and then your body says “That’s it--no more, for now,” there’s no need to panic. Especially sometimes the mind also becomes exhausted, handling so many details and contingencies necessary for devotional duties, over an extended period of time. Generally most devotees can deal with physical exhaustion—they just rest. Of course, there are always a few kamikazes who persist in burning the candle at both ends, month after month—without realizing the realities of rendering spiritual service with a material body. But when body fatigue combines with mental tiredness, sometimes devotees become bewildered. “Oh, what’s happening to me! Both my body and mind feel so drained. Maybe something is wrong about doing devotional service—maybe it’s better to just believe in Krishna and leave it at that . . . .”
[More:]
Certainly those who’ve worked in the material world are no strangers to physical and mental fatigue. They know such is part and parcel of the workday routine—you endure the pyschological and physical grind to get the pay check. I have noticed, though, that mainly in the wealthier countries, young devotees who come to an ashram without having ever worked a steady job can have a rosy conception of exertion in devotion. Often they are quick to “throw in the towel” for the day, the week, or even months and years.
They reason: “I got tired a few times, doing devotional service. That must be bad. Better I just live my little type of spiritual lifestyle on my own, so I’ll be content.” I remind them that although they never experienced the wear and tear from working a steady job, many of them did demolish themselves by all-night partying, intoxication binges, and lust marathons. “But that’s different—although it was wrong, at least it was for me . . . . Devotional service is for someone else, though--you know, that unknown blue boy, whom we hope exists, but we’re not sure yet. As for me, at least I’m sure I exist; and sense gratification, while not everything it’s made out to be, is certainly something real . . . that you can get your mind and hands on at suitable times. . . .

For those of us who grew up in the sixties and seventies this article hits a few nails on the head.
Rates of anxiety and depression among young people have risen markedly in each of the past five decades, the Mental Health Council of Australia says. But for some parents who grew up during and since the counter-culture generation, cannabis continues to symbolise freedom, rebellion and broad-minded perspectives.
I've met quite a few people who have drug induced psychosis. It damages their lives immensely. I have friends with kids who did the same thing we were doing as teenagers but as this article points out with far worse consequences. In fact when I think about it I can recall problems even then.

DESCRIPTION OF THE EARTH'S FOUR AGES
http://www.swamishyam.org/everyguide-fourages.html
Golden Age, or Satya Yuga (3.891 Million BC)
The most recent Golden Age started in 3.900 Million BC and ran to the beginning of the Silver Age. In the Golden Age, the Earth remains in constant communication with beings of different planets and planes of Existence. Many of the semi-divine races maintain homes, and even cities or states on the Earth. The Earth is far more fertile, lush, clean, vibrant, and energized, so that all people can obtain whatever they need just from natural resources. Gems, jewels, coral, and precious metals and stones of all kind are available in abundance, and used widely. People are generally eighteen to twenty feet in height, and remain extremely powerful throughout their lifetime. The average life-span ranges from immortality in the beginning of the Golden Age to about 200,000 at the end of the Golden Age. Long, extreme meditation and austerity to obtain superhuman powers are fairly common. Also divine virtues are natural. Dharma exists in all of its four points: austerity, purity, compassion, and truthfulness.
Silver Age, or Treta Yuga (2.163 Million BC)
In the Silver Age, people from other planets do not live or relate as intimately with humans, although they visit the Earth fairly frequently, and impart knowledge to selected individuals. Only certain people from Earth have the ability to travel to other planets. There is great prosperity on the Earth, immense power, and advanced fields of science and art. People are physically twelve to fourteen feet tall, very powerful with the use of mantras, and are mentally perceptive. The average life span of people ranges from 60,000 - 10,000 years. The Solar Dynasty remains in charge of governance of the Earth. In the Golden Age great palaces, cities, and assembly halls, are built by supernatural powers, but in the Silver Age human labor becomes compulsory. Dharma is still honored above all else, and followed in three points: purity, compassion, and truthfulness.
Copper Age, or Dvapara Yuga (867,000 BC)
During the Copper Age, powerful beings from other planets and planes of existence appear even less frequently on Earth. They still appear to those who culture and evolve themselves. They grant boons, accept the offerings of yajñas, offer assistance, spiritual guidance, etc. Human beings are not as mentally and physically powerful as in the Silver Age. People average eight to ten feet in height. The average life-span ranges from 3,000 in the beginning to 500 years at the close of the Copper Age. Accordingly, there are still great powers through the use of mantras, tremendous arts, and alchemical science. Whatever is presently accomplished through technical feats now, is accomplished through yoga and tantra in the Copper Age, which is not adverse to Nature. The Lunar Dynasty was the presiding government. The black magical arts begin to grow. Most people are well-rooted in the authentic wisdom of Intergalactic History. This age recently ended approximately 5,300 years ago, with the Mahabharata War. This was also the end of Interplanetary communication for the human civilization. Dharma survives in two points: compassion and truthfulness.
Iron Age, or Kali Yuga (3101 BC)
In the Iron Age, vice spreads through the means of greed, intoxication, and over-indulgence in sense gratification. When this is relayed upon more heavily, humans become ignorant of their glorious past, and begin doubting its existence. Soon, complete reliance on manual labor and mental technological inventions spread world-wide. People grow physically weaker, and are four to six feet in height. The average life-span ranges from 100 - 65 years. Meditation, compassion, and purity are scarce. Because communication with other planes of existence is cut-off, mankind believes he is the Supreme being, and therefore exploits the resources of the Earth and universe. Governance is broken up across the globe, and power fluctuates between those with the latest technological advantages. Dharma exists only in one point: truthfulness.
A Constitutional Injunction for Every Birth
http://www.gopala.org/index.php/2005/01/29/p417#more417
From Sri Bhaktyaloka
By Srila Thakur Bhaktivinode
Aspiring devotees should first take shelter of the lotus feet of a bonafide guru. Without taking shelter of a guru, one cannot achieve anything auspicious. There are two types of people — one having developed intelligence and one having undeveloped intelligence. Those whose intelligence is undeveloped are absorbed in the so-called happiness of this world. If by chance they get the association of a mahajana, then they also become intelligent. They consider, “How unfortunate I am! I’m always engaged in sense gratification. I’m passing my days hankering for material enjoyment.” This initial association with a great soul is also called association with the guru by hearing. By acquired good fortune, at this time faith is awakened. When faith is awakened, one endeavors for devotional service. Then it is essential for one to take shelter of the lotus feet of a guru. In this way by the influence of one's previous good works, performed knowingly or unknowingly, persons with undeveloped intelligence become intelligent and take shelter of the lotus feet of a guru.
What type of guru one should take shelter of is explained in the sastras: Someone who has conquered the six enemies beginning with lust, who is pure, who performs devotional service on the path of raga, who is brahminical, who knows the clear path of the Vedas, whom sadhus can respect as guru, who is able to control the senses, who is merciful to all living entities, who is cultured, who is without duplicity, and who is truthful — such a householder is fit to be accepted as guru. All these qualities are considered in two ways. The principal quality of a guru is attachment to Krishna and detachment for what is not related with Krishna. All other qualities are secondary. That is why Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said in the Chaitanya-caritamrita (Madhya 8.127):
kiba vipra, kiba nyasi, sudra kene naya
yei krishna-tattva-vetta, sei ‘guru’ haya
Whether one is a brahmana, a sannyasi, or a sudra — regardless of what he is — he can become a spiritual master if he knows the science of Krishna.
If one possesses this principal symptom of a guru, then he is eligible to be guru, even though he lacks one or two secondary symptoms. Being a brahmana and being a householder are counted as secondary symptoms. It is good if a person possesses these two secondary symptoms along with the principal qualification. But those who are defective in the principal symptom are unqualified to be guru, even though they possess the other two. As stated in Padma Purana:
mahabhagavata srestho brahmano vai guror nrnam
sarvesam eva lokanam asau pujyo yatha harih
mahakula-puto ‘pi sarva yajnesu diksitah
sahasra-sakha-dhyayi ca na guruh syad avaisnavah
Among all human beings, the brahmana who is a maha-bhagavata, or great devotee, is topmost and qualified as guru. He is as worshipable as Lord Hari. A non-vaisnava is never fit to be guru, even if he has taken birth in a great family, performed all sacrifices, and studied many branches of the Vedas.
After finding a qualified guru, a faithful disciple should serve him with firm conviction and without duplicity. After pleasing the guru, one should accept initiation and krishna-mantra. Those who are averse to taking initiation and only make a drama of kapata-kirtana, duplicitous chanting, while advertising themselves as vaisnavas certainly cheat themselves. It is not the duty of materialistic persons to renounce the process of initiation because a few great souls like Jada Bharata did not take initiation. Initiation is a constitutional injunction for every birth of the living entity. If initiation is not seen in the life of a perfected soul, it should not be taken as an example. General rules are not changed because something happens to a particular person in a special situation. Sri Dhruva Maharaja went to Dhruvaloka in his material body — seeing that, should one waste time hoping for the same? The general rule is a living entity gives up his material body and goes to Vaikuntha in his spiritual body. General rules should be accepted by people in general. Whenever and whatever is desired by the Lord, who is full of inconceivable potencies, only that happens. Therefore, we should never transgress the general rules. After pleasing the guru by serving him without duplicity, one should receive from him instructions on the absolute truth and initiation into the chanting of the holy name of the Lord.

Jagannath Temple Uses 365 Different Rice Varities for
Offerings
http://autofeed.msn.co.in/pandorav3/output/News/cd0fa397-864a-4899-9c93-030e3e607b97.aspx
LUCKNOW, INDIA, February 4, 2005: Did you know that development of newer rice varieties was to meet the needs of Orissa's famous Jagannath temple that uses a different variety for its rituals every day? Or that a sandalwood-turmeric tika originates in the belief that it will soothe the mind? Giving various instances to stress that most rituals have a scientific background were delegates at a workshop at the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) here. Referring to the Jagannath temple in Orissa's Puri town using different rice each of the 365 days a year, Sri Lankan botanist Balkrishna Pashupati said: "I have sufficient reason to believe that many varieties of rice were developed essentially to fulfil the daily ritual at the famous temple." "And that was the reason a large number of villages in Orissa and around specialized in producing at least one of these varieties of rice," he told a workshop on biodiversity research.

Krishna has many followers in London
http://www.htcricket.com/news/181_1141452,00110001.htm
Asian News International
London, December
Anyone who has ever been to London's West End will remember the sounds as well as the sights of Britain's capital city: the piercing drone of pneumatic drills as yet another road is dug up, the cacophony of car horns in the traffic jams caused by such drilling, the clatter of police helicopters monitoring the traffic jams caused by the jams that were caused by the drills, and so on.
And one other sound: the gentle rise and fall through the din of chanting; to be specific the sound of the call of Krishna, Hare Krishna.
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, the Hare Krishna movement in Britain was derided as a hang out for the drugged out, spaced out hippies. Not any longer, as more and more Indians are joining the movement.
Indians like 28-year-old accountant Sumeet Khullar who told Britain's Eastern Eye newspaper:" When I first joined and started going on harinama (the parade) my parents were absolutely adamant that it was all nonsense. But once they saw the level of devotion, they were very impressed. Now, even my mum comes with me."
James Edwards, an American whose initiated name is Jay Nitay, is the head of the community development at ISKCON or the International Society for Krishna Consciousness's temple in London's West End.
He feels that Indians previously considered the Hare Krishna movement to be simply some obscure sect. But all that is changing; "Over time Indians can see that the movement has lasted. This is part of the reason why more and more are joining us".
And devotee Vibha Patel, initiated name Varsana Devi-Dasi, agrees; "In the past, it has suffered prejudice from the Indian community, mainly through misunderstanding. But people are now seeing that the philosophy that we follow is rooted in a tradition that dates back thousands of years".
The growing number of people joining the Hare Krishna movement in London has meant that enough money has been raised to refurbish the Soho Street temple, and the twice, daily harinama through the streets of London has continued to raise awareness.
As one recent Indian adherent said: "People are inspired at the devotion shown by white people to a spiritual belief that stems from India. My friends at university have got into it, and my wife is very devoted as well. It just gives me a deeper sense of identity".
And another devotee summed it all up nicely when he observed: "It is a peaceful philosophy that is not associated with the colour of your skin or your background".
And that is a pretty good basis for any faith.

Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER
And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It's death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER
And the calf that you carve with a smile
Is MURDER
And the turkey you festively slice
Is MURDER
Do you know how animals die ?
Kitchen aromas aren't very homely
It's not "comforting", cheery or kind
It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
Of MURDER
It's not "natural", "normal" or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry

Of MURDER

Scuba-dive and view Krishna's Dwarka:
http://news.newkerala.com/india-news/?action=fullnews&id=70032
[India News]: Ahmedabad, Feb 9 : People can now catch a glimpse of Lord Krishna's fabled underwater Dwarka city off the Gujarat coast.
An adventure sports company is launching scuba diving facilities near the pilgrimage town of Dwarka, 457 km here, which will enable the divers to glimpse the underwater "Bet Dwarka".
"It will be the first time in India and probably in the world where people can dive and see an ancient submerged city," Adventures Sports Limited marketing executive S.K. Singh told IANS.
The city-based Adventure Sports will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government Thursday.
The MoU proposes two projects at an estimated cost of Rs. 130 million. Apart from Bet Dwarka, the firm will also offer scuba diving facilities at Marine National Park, near Jamnagar, 313 km from here.
"The feasibility study of the Jamnagar project is awaited," Singh said.
Lord Krishna's Bet Dwarka was long believed to exist only in the realm of mythology, before the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) conclusively proved its existence on the basis of underwater findings.
The adventure sports firm will provide the necessary scuba diving equipment as well training, if required, to participants as part of packages of varying durations.
The facilities, to be made available by March, will be based at Ajod island, 13 km off the main coast. Lodging and boarding facilities will be provided at the island.
The project will work both as a training and certification centre and as a diving facility centre.
"Apart from scuba diving enthusiasts, families coming to Dwarka for pilgrimage too will be interested as the underwater "Bet Dwarka" has religious significance," Singh said.
The sports firm's divers will also protect the ecology and archaeology of the place.

THE BRAHMIN WHO KNEW MANY LANGUAGES
There was one learned brahmana who knew so many languages. He came to a king's court and he spoke in so many languages that no-one could find out what was his language. He said, "If you can find out my language, then you are very clever." The king was so confused. "What is his language?" But the king had a joker in his court whose name was Tenalilam. He was from Tenali, a village in Andha Pradesa, and he was a very crooked cunning fellow. He said to the king, "Don't worry. Tonight I will find out what his language is." So the king said, "If you find that out I will give you a thousand gold coins." The joker said, "All right, I will find out." So then in the evening the pandita was walking in the garden. The joker had covered himself with a big blanket, and he sat on a tree. When the pandit walked below, the joker jumped on him. The pandit got a big fright. "Oh my God!" he exclaimed in the Keralan language. Thus his real language was revealed.
MORAL: Philosophers may be speaking so much high philosophy, but then if they get emotional or angry, sometimes their real motive comes out.

Making Food Sacred - Offering
our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.
Go here to follow the simple system for offering
foodstuffs to the Lord
... and always
with the Magic ingredient - Offer it to Krishna.....
... with L'n D (love and devotion)

Fake Fried Fish
Ingredients:
regular soft or firm tofu
soy sauce
nori sheets (seaweed)
Tempura batter mix
oil for deep frying
Directions:
In Wisconsin Friday fish frys are big, and as a vegetarian I don't
want to miss out. So I came up with this recipe. It is based on the memory
of an appetizer served me once at a wonderful macrobiotic restaurant, called
the Cauldron, that once existed on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Cut up the tofu into rectangular chunks of any size desired. I like to use soft tofu because it's never as soft as they advertise and anyway it's slightly gelatinous quality makes a perfect, delicate fish substitute. But you can use firm if you prefer. Blot dry and dab one side with soy sauce.
With a scissors cut the toasted nori into appropriate sizes to match the chunks and have ready (but don't place on the tofu yet or the nori gets too soggy and will threaten to slip off while frying).
Heat the cooking oil to deep frying temp.
Mix tempura batter with cold water as directed on package (or to your liking - thinner is lighter). Adhere the nori pieces, like postage stamps, on to the lightly marinated sides of the tofu chunks (I usually do about 3 or 4 at a time, depending on their size) and dip in tempura batter.
Fry until you think they're done (they should puff a little and rise; if they're golden brown, they're overdone).
I like to make a simple dipping sauce to accompany the "fried fish". Just blend a little soy sauce with lemon juice and water (you can also add a bit of toasted sesame oil for some extra flavor).
This is a great snack or main dish and fairly easy. I love the combination of textures, soft and crispy. And the seaweed not only mimics the fish flavor, but the look of fried fish as well.
They are best piping hot fresh, of course, but they can be reheated in an oven.
Tofu "Turkey" with Stuffing
Ingredients:
Turkey:
5 pounds of firm tofu
1 pound of tofu for the "drumsticks" - optional
Stuffing:
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
1 small white cabbage heart chopped/grated fine
1 and 1/3 cup celery, diced (about 4 stalks)
1 cup tempe or tofu finely chopped
3 tsp hing
2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup sage (may use 1/8)
2 teaspoons marjoram
2 teaspoons thyme
1 teaspoon winter or summer savory
salt and pepper to taste (1/2 tsp)
1 teaspoon rosemary
2 teaspoons celery seed
1/4 cup soy sauce or tamari
3 cups Pepperidge Farm Herb Stuffing
Basting mixture:
1/2 cup toasted sesame oil
1/4 to 1/3 cup soy sauce or tamari
2 tablespoons miso
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon mustard of choice
Directions:
Mash tofu or mix well with hands. Be sure that all of the lumps are out. Line a 12" colander with wet cheesecloth over lapping the sides. Add the mashed tofu to the cloth covered colander, press down and cover with the overlapping sides. Place the whole thing in a large bowl. Cover the cheesecloth with a plate that fits inside the colander and place a 5 pound weight on the plate. Refrigerate and let sit for 2 to 3 hours.
When time is up, start the stuffing. Saute' the grated white cabbage heart, celery and tofu/tempe in the 2 tablesoons sesame oil. When soft, add the hing and nutmeg and all the rest of the stuffing ingredients, except stuffing, mixing well. Stir and cook for 5 minutes. Add herb stuffing and mix well.
Remove tofu from fridge and take off weight, plate and top of cheesecloth. Hollow out tofu to within 1 inch of the sides and bottom, placing the tofu in a bowl. Place the stuffing inside the shell and pack in firmly. Cover with the remaining tofu and pat down firmly. Turn stuffed tofu onto a greased baking sheet, flat side down. Gently press on sides of "turkey" to achieve a more oval shape. If desired at this point, you may mold "drumsticks" out of one pound of tofu, and place on each side of the "turkey".
Mix up the basting mixture and baste tofu "turkey" with half of it. Cover the "turkey" with foil, and bake at 400 degrees for about 1 hour.
Remove foil, baste with all the remaining mixture except a few tablespoons
and return to oven for 1 hour more, or until the "turkey" is golden. Remove
from oven and use rest of basting mix. Using at least 2 large spatulars,
move to a large plate. Serve with the gravy of your choice, if you wish,
and cranberry sauce.

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do
some pro-veg works like the following:
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.
Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops,
too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

The book "Living a Good Life" normally selling at $21.95 is now going at the $14.95 price which lasts until just after Xmas, although we could consider extending it if anyone were to approach us after them with this reference.http://vegsoc.wellington.net.nz/livingGd.htm

Akbar, the mighty Moghul Emperor (1556-1605 A.D.)
and
his Minister,
.......come friend,
and courtier Raja Birbal (Birbal "The wise").
This section contains representations of the battle of wits between
Akbar and Birbal. It is said that Birbal was a poor brahmin and that it
was only on the strength of wit and sharpness of his intellect that he
could rise that high in the Mughal empire as favourite courtier, personal
friend and chief minister - to be known as Raja Birbal. Birbal was
killed in the battle of Khandhar in 1588.
The beauty of these repartees and wisecracks of Birbal is that
they are still very potent to amuse and enlighten the reader or listener
today. It is so because they reveal a fundamental truth of life. You will
find as you read through this joke book that I have dedicated time as the
wise brahmins that go before us did to portray only those 'Jokes' which
convey the humour and wit which carry the multi-faceted influences of Vedic
culture.
Like their original verbal portrayal, these writings, tales,
stories or jokes etc., convey time-less messages, and provide a glimpse
to the Medieval Ethos of Vedic India, India under Mogul rule, under British
rule, and the mind of modern devotees. I believe that such repartees are
as much a part of the development of Vedic tradition as Hitopadesh, Panchatantra
or Katha-Saritsar are.
To trace the very first meeting of Emperor Akbar and Birbal, and the
way that Birbal came to be in the Mughal court, and his life prior to that,
is a story that has sure to have done the rounds of numerous village chaupals.
History record that Birbal was a poor brahmin, living by growing
crops as a farmer, initially that he as all brahmin's prefer to be independent
in the way that they earn their subsistence, and support their families.
The karmic serendipity, to some coincidence, that Birbal happened to come
before the Mughal Emperor of All India display his sharp brahminical wit
and intellect, that would so much impress that Emperor Akbar that the Emperor
immediately offered Birbal the highest post of Chief Minister of his Empire
to Birbal.
The tale begins when Birbal was not even the Minister but a simple
villager doing his farming. He had a young beautiful daughter, who was
the darling of his heart, as daughter usually are of their fathers. His
village was on the bank of the river Yamuna, not so far away from Agra
in the region of Braj Mandal. And at this time in Indian history Agra was
the capital of Emperor Akbar's Empire.
The Mughal Emperor was known for his love of comely lassies.
One day, he promulgated a very disturbing order in his Empire. The order
said: "On the coming Purnima, full moon day, the Emperor will visit his
private garden on the bank of the river Yamuna. On that happy occasion
all persons living in Agra and the adjoining villages should bring their
nubile, beautiful daughters to that garden. Then the Emperor will make
his choice out of the girls, to become his queens. He who does not do so,
or in any way avoids this order shall be severely punished."
All te subjects in the area were rather dismayed to receive such
an outrageous order. But who of them could question the Emperor???
When Birbal heard of this, he was also very much disturbed. There
was a rat-catcher living in the nearby village who had been favourite of
Birbal. He used to call him to his farm to get rid of the menace of the
rats eating away his crops. That rat-catcher was also quite enamoured by
the beauty of Birbal's daughter, and Birbal was toying with the idea of
marrying his daughter off to that rat-catcher. Now he was in a fix! What
should he do? Defying the Emperor's order meant sure death, and the compliance
meant his daughter's perpetual sorrow, for she had also taken a vow of
marrying only that rat-catcher. She did not want to be one of the Emperor's
so many queens - if selected. Akbar was much senior to her in age and she
also felt no charm or attraction in marrying an elderly person, elder to
even her father.
Birbal was a worried man. When he couldn't find any solution,
he went to the temple of his chosen Ishta deva, Lord Shiva. Meditating
quietly there for about an hour, his Lord revealed to him the solution.
Then and there he decided that he would neither go to that Yamuna Garden
in Agra on the aforesaid night, nor would he send his lovely daughter anywhere.
The appointed day arrived and people began to go to Agra in their
bullock carts, by camels, horses, and even on foot. They had their nubile,
comely daughters with them. Birbal quietly watched them go, pitying there
lot. In reflective mood, Birbal was thinking to himself: "The King or Emperor
is supposed to be the Naradeva, or God's representative on earth. This
Emperor has not done the correct thing in promulgating this outrageous
order!" While Birbal was thinking like that, literally scores of people
were going towards Agra.
When the village sarpanch (legal head of the village) saw Birbal
sitting quietly on the porch of his farm house, he asked: "Why, Birbal?
Why are you not going to Agra? You have a beautiful, and fine daughter,
who is of nubile-age. You know, your not going would mean defiance of the
Royal order for which you could be severely punished. My advice to you
should be that you come along too!"
But Birbal didn't move from his position. He replied: "I don't
fear the Emperor's wrath. My Lord Shiva-Shambu is my saviour, my Protector.
I don't want my daughter to be married to someone even senior to me in
age. You better go. I have no intention of joining your caravan."
But the damage had been done. For that Sarpanch was a vile man
inside. He reached Agra and quickly told a high ranking official of the
Emperor's Mughal Army about this defiance by a brahmin of the royal order.
That Commandant sent a squad of soldiers to physically lift Birbal from
his farm and bring him directly before the Emperor. Defiance of the Emperor's
order was serious matter for it involved the prestige and reputation of
the empire.
After the 'Selection of the Brides for the Emperor' was over
on the third day, Birbal was brought to the Royal Court, and stood before
the Emperor.
The Emperor was furious when he saw Birbal present in the court
with his daughter. "You fool! Now you'll have to lose your head for not
obeying my orders. What do you think of that?"
Birbal was not in the least bit afraid and submitted before the
Emperor in a quiet voice: "Your Majesty, I'm a poor man and maintain my
family by farming. I had already decided to solemnise my daughter's marriage
to some other fellow. In fact she had already been betrothed!"
"What? Could there be a better choice for you daughter than the
Emperor himself? Have you taken a large dose of Bhang?" asked Abul Fazal,
the learned man of Akbar's Mughal Court.
"In a way, I say, yes!" replied Birbal boldly.
"Why do you call your death so early man," asked Raja Man Singh
and added: "No one in the whole world can compare with our Emperor. Who
is your prospective son-in-law by the way?"
"He is the rat-catcher and a handsome youth. Moreover, he is
a young man whom my daughter likes. He is from my own community too!"
Birbal's statement left the entire court dumbfounded with shock
and disbelief. "A rat-catcher is being given preference over the Mughal
Emperor. Surely, this man is a reckless dunce to say such ridiculous words
before the Mighty Emperor himself!" Such were the thoughts that crossed
the minds of the assembly.
The Emperor found this man quite stubborn and in a way amusing.
Akbar said in a solemn voice: "How can you say that I am inferior to that
rat-catcher, O learned brahmin?"
"Maharaj," the brahmin Birbal responded: "God has made not two
persons equal in any respect. Some are superior in one way and some in
another. Maharaj, you know who is the most puissant power in the world?"
Akbar replied, "The Sun!"
Birbal then said: "No Maharaj. If you ask the sun, it will say,
'It is not I who am the mightiest of all; the clouds are greater than I,
for they hide my face when they like, an quench my thirst only when they
please'."
Birbal praised for a while. He found the attention of the entire
court was riveted to him. He continued: "Maharaj, ask the wind and it will
say, 'I am not the mightier than a mountain. Although I can blow away the
clouds, I cannot move a mountain'."
The Emperor was listening very quietly as Birbal went on, "But
is the mountain to be the mightiest? No, ask the mountain and it will say,
'The little brown rat borrows holes in me and I cannot prevent it."
Then continuing, Birbal said: "Apparently it might appear that
the rat is the most powerful! But ask it and it would say that he is frightened
of the rat-catcher."
Then bowing in a dramatic style, Birbal said with a sense of
finality: "So you see, Your Majesty, though the rat catcher is the humblest
in your empire and stands no where in your comparison, he is even greater
than the sun!"
Akbar was struck with wonder at Birbal's cleverly worded utterances.
He immediately discerned the sharp intelligence of that brahmin and said
to him: "Well! I am pleased with the arguments you have given. Now you
shall not die. Instead I offer you a high post in my Empire as my Minister,
and confer upon you the honorary title Raja upon you!!"
Birbal bowed his head in gratitude and inwardly thanked his Ishtadeva
Lord Shiva-Shambhu who not only saved his life by His Benign-Grace, but
got him a highly respected post in the Mughal Empire. Birbal returned to
his village, solemnised his daughter's marriage to that rat-catcher and
provided him a post too, in the Mughal Empire by his resources.

Birbal was very fond of farming. Since basically he was a farmer, he
had a special fondness for the farming community. Mulla Do Pyaja was another
senior Minister of the Mughal Empire who had he tendency, to have more
liking for the soldiers. One day, just to belittle Birbal before everyone,
he asked Birbal:
"Raja Sahib! What is your traditional profession?"
Without bating an eye-lid, Birbal replied: "Farming! My father
was also a farmer!"
"How did he die?"
"He was looking after the fields during the cold winter nights. He
caught a cold and died at the farm itself!" Birbal explained. "And how
did your grand father die," the Mulla asked once again.
"He too, died on the farm! He slipped into the well while watering
his crops!" Birbal said.
"That is why I say, farming is very bad!" Chuckled Mulla mischievously.
Now it was Birbal's turn to ask some personal questions from the Mulla.
"Mulla ji! What is your traditional profession?"
"We have always been soldiers!" the Mulla replied.
"How did you father die?" Birbal asked, "...he was a soldier,
he died fighting a battle."
"And how did you grandfather die?" "He too was a soldier," said
the Mulla, ".....and died while fighting a war!"
"That's why I say, soldiery is bad form your family. Adopt any
other profession!" advised Birbal with a chuckle..
* * *
On another occasion Akbar asked Birbal, apparently in rage: "Birbal!
Do you think that I'm a fool?"
"Your Highness! Please don't ask me this question. If I say you
are, you might send me to the gallows. And if I say you are not, still
you might punish me because this derogatory reference is being used to
describe your nature! And certainly an Emperor can't be likened to a fool!"
Birbal's thoughtful arguments dissolved the anger of the Emperor
who burst out laughing at Birbal's peculiar logic. He had said it without
using any word to this effect.
* * *
One day Akbar said to Birbal: "You know, Birbal, in Persian all personal
nouns having 'ban' as a suffix invariably refer to a rogue like 'Gadiban',
Feelban', etc. (Gadiban means the cart-vendor, and Feelban means Elephant-man,
etc).
"You are right, Meharban," replied Birbal sheepishly.
* * *
Akbar said to Birbal: "I want to learn your Hindu/Brajabhasha language.
Can you teach me?"
"Yes, why not, Your Majesty!" replied Birbal happily and then
said: "When should we start the lessons?"
"No hurry! I have had some lessons already, given to me by Purohit
Rajashekar. I know this much that 'ku' is a prefix used when we wish to
deride someone, like 'Kujati' (bad or low caste) or 'Kuputra' (an unworthy
son)! The same is done by the use of 'su' but in a good sense, as 'su'
means good! While the Emperor was saying so, prince Salim happened to come
in. Birbal immediately said: "Welcome, Suar Sahib!"
Now Suar in Hindi means a swine (a pig or a hog) and the Emperor
knew that one too. He completely lost his temper: "How dare you address
my son as a swine. I will have you punished Birbal, what a cheek!"
"Please don't be angry, Your Majesty! You just now taught me
that 'Su' means good. How could I have dared used the term 'Ku'-nwar (prince)
for you son having only seconds before mentioned how 'ku' meant low or
unworthy. So I made it mean good by replacing it with 'Su'!"
The Emperor burst out laughing at Birbal's witty explanation!
* * *
One day the Emperor was strolling on the banks of the river Yamuna with
Birbal. It was a moon lit night. Suddenly the Emperor asked of Birbal,
"What is that, Birbal, that which we can see and not the moon?"
" ' Tis darkness your Majesty, tis darkness!" Birbal replied.
* * *
Once the Emperor got angry with a brahmin and ordered him to be sent
to the gallows. By the Lord's mercy, at the same time Birbal arrived at
the court at the very same moment. Knowing Birbal's compassion and alliance
for brahmins, the Emperor warned him, "Now I won't listen to any of your
arguments Birbal, and I shall act contrary to whatever you say!"
"Then I request Your Highness," replied Birbal wryly: ".....to
get this brahmin beheaded immediately!"
The Emperor smiled and reconsidered his earlier order, as the
Emperor had promised to act on the contrary to Birbal's advice!
* * *
At time the Emperor used to ask Birbal to do some job below Birbal's
social status, but with the view to test the intelligence and patience
of his friend and Minister Birbal.
One such day he asked Birbal, "Arrange a groom for my adopted
daughter who is just nearing 16 years of age. The boy should be around
20 years."
The next day Birbal returned with two boys. The Emperor was surprised:
"I asked for one boy and not two of them."
"Since I could not get a deserving boy of 20 years of age, I
thought that I'd bring you two 10 year old boys that would then fit your
requirement!"
Akbar got the subtle hint in Birbal's remark and kept quiet.

This is the message that the Pacific Palisades, CA High School Staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering machine. This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children's absences and missing homework. The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their children's failing grades changed to passing grades even though those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not complete enough school work to pass their classes.
This is the actual answering machine message for the school:

slowly and says to the guy, "What would you like to discuss?"
"Oh, I don't know,"says the guy. "How about nuclear power?" "OK,"
says the blonde. "That could be an interesting topic. But let
me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat
the same stuff--grass. Yet the deer excretes little pellets,
the cow turns out a flat patty, and the horse produces muffins of dried

Why do you suppose that is?"
The guy is dumbfounded. Finally he replies, "I haven't the

The Husband Store
A store that sells husbands has just opened where a woman may go to choose a husband from among many men. The store is composed of 6 floors, and the men increase in positive attributes as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch. As you open the door to any floor you may choose a man from that floor, but if you go up a floor, you cannot go back down except to exit the building. So a woman goes to the shopping center to find a husband.
On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 - These men have jobs.
The woman reads the sign and says to herself, "Well, that's better
than my last boyfriend, but I wonder what's further up?" So up she goes.
The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 - These men have jobs and love kids. The woman remarks to herself,
"That's great, but I wonder what's further up?" And up she goes again.
The third! floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love kids and are extremely good looking.
"Hmmm, better" she says. "But I wonder what's upstairs?"
The fourth floor sign reads:
Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love kids, are extremely good looking
and help with the housework.
"Wow!" exclaims the woman, "very tempting. BUT, there must be more further up!" And again she heads up another flight.
The fifth floor sign reads:
Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love kids, are extremely good looking,
help with the housework and have a strong romantic streak.
"Oh, mercy me! But just think... what must be awaiting me further on?" So up to the sixth floor she goes.
The sixth floor sign reads:
Floor 6 - You are visitor 3,456,789,012 to this floor. There are no
men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible
to please.
Thank you for shopping at Husband Mart and have a nice day.
