Vege update:
Social scientists and law enforcement officials
have identified animal abuse as a symptom of emotional illness and a precursor
to violent crimes against human beings. To allow individuals guilty of
perpetrating such cruel acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished
would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go
on to possibly commit violent crimes against humans.

Making Food Sacred - Offering
our food to Krishna:
....excerpt from lecture by HDG Srila A.C.
Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.3.1-3 -- San Francisco,
March 28, 1968
The Vedic literature says like this, that God has no leg, no hand. Therefore the impersonalists take advantage of it. "Oh, here it is stated God has no legs, no hands." But the next line is, javana grhita: "He can accept everything which you offer Him in devotion."
Now how He can accept? If He has no hand, how He can accept things from us? That means He hasn't got a hand like us. His hand is different. Therefore even though He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away from us, still, He says in the Bhagavad-gita, it is said,
patram puspam phalam toyam
yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tad aham bhakty-upahrtam
asnami prayatatmanah
Krsna says that "A little flower or little water or a little leaf, whatever My devotee offers Me in love and devotion, I accept it." And tad aham bhakty-upahrtam. "And because he has brought it with great devotion, therefore I eat." Tad aham bhakty-upahrtam asnami. Asnami means "I eat." Now you can say, "All right, I'll offer these fruits and flower to God, but it is the same. It is remaining. How He is eating?" But His eating is not like my eating, because He hasn't got a body like this. This body is material. If you bring me a plate of fruits, this body immediately swallows it. But He has got spiritual body. He eats... Simply as soon as He knows that you have offered it in devotion, He eats immediately.

foodstuffs to the Lord

Points of View
I don't know if Shel was actually a vegetarian or not, but he did do
some pro-veg works like the following:
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue,
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't funny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.
Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops,
too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

MOONG DAL CHILLA (Split green gram pancakes)
(makes 6 of regular size)
Ingredients:
1 cup yellow moong dal (split and husked green
gram)
a handful of peas
1" ginger, peeled and chopped
1-2 small green chillies, halved
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
1 small white cabbage heart chopped fine or grated
2 tablespoons cilantro (coriander) chopped fine
oil for frying
salt to taste
Wash the dal thoroughly. Put in a bowl and soak overnight in 3 cups
of water. Drain. Cook the peas and chop coarsely. Add ginger, chillies,
asafoetida, turmeric and salt to the soaked dal. Grind with 1/2 cup of
water in a blender to make a smooth batter. Run the blender for a few minutes
more to make the batter airy. Pour the batter into a bowl, add grated cabbage,
cilantro (coriander leaf) and peas. Mix well.
Heat a pan with 1/2 teaspoon oil. Drop a ladleful of batter in the
centre of the pan. Using the back of the ladle, spread the batter outwards
in a circular motion. Make sure the chilla is not too thick so it gets
cooked evenly. Add a little oil along the edges of the chilla, cover and
cook for 2 minutes. Turn the chilla over and cook on the otherside until
it gets brown patches.
Serve hot with cilantro chutney.
A chilla is sometimes called a vegetable omelet. And it does taste like a lacy French omelet because of the lightness of the ground dal. Adding vegetables like cabbage, peas, corn or tomatoes also makes it nutritious.
Black Tar Curd Steaks
A fantastic barbecue recipe - juicy marianated curd with a wonderfully
sticky honey, orange and anise glaze.
Serves 8
Ingredients:
rind of 1 orange, sliced into matchstick strips
1 star anise pod
1 tspn hing
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 tbsp chestnut honey
1 tbsp tamari, (wheat-free soy sauce)
1 tsp toasted sesame oil
2 tsp black molasses sugar
1 tbsp cider vinegar
8 curd steaks (250 grms and thick)
salt and fresh ground black pepper
Note: For the more unusual ingredients, any good delicatesssen (especially
Chinese) will be able to help you out.
Also for good milk curd try the Cow & Gate brand if you can't get
direct from the farm or the like.
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.
2. Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil. Throw in the orange shreds and blanch for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
3. Crush the star anise with the hing, using a pestle and mortar. Mix in the olive oil.
4. Put the honey, tamari, sesame oil, sugar and vinegar in a bowl and mix well to form a glaze.
5. Stir the hing and anise mixture into the glaze. Season with salt and pepper, then add the orange shreds.
6. Place the curd steaks in a roasting pan. Pour the glaze over them, turning to coat.
7. Roast for 20 minutes, then turn curd steaks over and baste with the glaze. Roast for another 20 minutes.
8. Remove the curd steaks from the oven and leave to cool.
Scrape the glaze into a bowl and set aside.
9. Light the barbecue about 1 hour before you want to offer and then
eat.
The fire is ready when the coals are uniformly covered with pale grey
ash - about 35 minutes.
10. Brush the reserved glaze over the curd steaks and finish cooking
them on the barbecue - about 20 minutes.
Turn them halfway through and brush with the glaze.
For those used to curd steaks with tamato mariande these are totally different and may be a little strange at first, was for me....the taste of citrus from the orange and the sweet from the honey.......
Zucchini-Apple Bliss Salad
Ingredients:
1 zucchini, cut into matchstick-size strips
1 red apple
¼ cup golden raisins
¼ cup walnut pieces or almond slivers,
dry-roasted
½ cup plain nonfat or soy yogurt

A few pinches of orange zest
Seeds from one green cardamom pod
Masala:
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp coriander seeds
½ tsp asafetida - hing
¼ tsp fennel seeds
Dry roast the masala until the cumin seeds have darkened a few shades. Whizz into a powder with the cardamom seeds in your coffee grinder. Set aside.
Chop the apple into ½ inch pieces and place them in a medium-large
mixing bowl with the zucchini pieces.
Add the masala and the remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix well.
Refrigerate for at least one hour. Done. Its ready to offer.
Plum Crumble
A great way to use up tinned fruit, and served with cream, ice cream
or custard, a guaranteed winner!!
Serves 2
Ingredients:
200g (7oz) plums, drained
2 tbsp water
½ vanilla pod, split
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp caster (refined granulated) sugar
2 tbsp dark grape juice
For the crumble
2 tbsp butter, softened
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp plain flour
1 orange, zest only
4 tbsp double (heavy) cream, whipped
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.
2. Place the plums into a pan with the water, split vanilla pod, both
sugars and the dark grape juice.
3. Cook over a moderate heat for 2-3 minutes.
4. Meanwhile make the crumble top. Rub together the butter, sugar and
flour, to resemble rough breadcrumbs. Add the orange zest.
5. Pour the plum mixture into a gratin dish and top with the crumble
mixture.
6. Place in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown.
7. When offering garnish with a spoonful of the whipped cream.
Rose falooda with vanilla ice cream
http://food-forthought.blogspot.com/2006/05/weekend-treat-falooda.html
Summer in Bombay is made bearable by ice cold treats like the falooda. During April and May everyone seems to be sipping and eating their way through tall glasses of this frothy pink concoction. The combination of chilled rose milk and ice cream is indeed hard to resist.
Falooda appears to have been introduced in India by the Parsis of Iran.
The community makes this drink to celebrate the spring equinox on March
21. The drink, though it is more like a sundae is named after the noodles
that are used in making it.
Eating a falooda is great fun because of the different texture of each
ingredient, in particular the chewy, gelatinous seeds and the soft noodles.
ROSE FALOODA
(for 1 glass)
Ingredients:
1 tbsp of tukmaria (basil seeds/ sabja/ falooda
seeds)
2 tbsp of rose syrup
3/4 cup cold milk
2 tbsp of vermicelli (falooda sev)
a scoop of vanilla ice cream
Method:
Place tukmaria in a bowl, cover with just enough water and refrigerate
for at least an hour or two.
Break the noodles into tiny pieces and boil in hot water (or as per
directions) until done, about 3-4 minutes. Cool. Beat milk until it is
frothy.
Take a tall transparent glass, add 2 tbsp of rose syrup, then gently
spoon in the noodles and the seeds (they should be swollen by now). Pour
the milk over this layer slowly. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
and serve immediately.
* Falooda can also be made in saffron (a pinch dissolved in milk) and mango (substitute mango pulp for rose syrup) flavors
I saw that Moshims in Tauranga are sellong a Falooda mix too
