The Audio Srila Prabhupada Lilamrita

Please find enclosed details a new website being launched on Gaura Purnima day 2008.
It is a simple audio rendition of sections from "Prabhupada, your ever well-wisher" by Satsvarupa dasa Goswami.
It was recorded here in the UK back in the mid '90's by Bhagavat-Asraya prabhu (ACBSP) at my studio and I edited it into 8 short instalments for inclusion on my weekly radio programme "Nectar of Devotion".

We had such a good response from listeners that it was decided to add "The Audio Srila Prabhupada Lilamrita" to the Nectar of Devotion website archive page.

In doing so I felt it might be nice to create a very simple, seperate website for the Lilamrita.

It will be officially launched on Gaura Purnima day 2008 for the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada and all the Vaishnava's.

I hope this humble attempt will add to the growing appreciation of Srila Prabhupada's remarkable achievements.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita AS IT IS

Bhagavad Gita:   Chapter 6 - Dhyana-yoga

                          purvabhyasena tenaiva
                        hriyate hy avaso 'pi sah
                          jijnasur api yogasya
                          sabda-brahmativartate

WORD FOR WORD
   purva--previous; abhyasena--by practice; tena--by that; eva--certainly; hriyate--is attracted; hi--surely; avasah--automatically; api--also; sah--he; jijnasuh--inquisitive; api--even; yogasya--about yoga; sabda-brahma--ritualistic principles of scriptures; ativartate--transcends.

TRANSLATION
   By virtue of the divine consciousness of his previous life, he automatically becomes attracted to the yogic principles--even without seeking them. Such an inquisitive transcendentalist stands always above the ritualistic principles of the scriptures.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:
   Advanced yogis are not very much attracted to the rituals of the scriptures, but they automatically become attracted to the yoga principles, which can elevate them to complete Krsna consciousness, the highest yoga perfection. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam (3.33.7), such disregard of Vedic rituals by the advanced transcendentalists is explained as follows:

                      aho bata sva-paco 'to gariyan
                    yaj-jihvagre vartate nama tubhyam
                   tepus tapas te juhuvuh sasnur arya
                     brahmanucur nama grnanti ye te

  "O my Lord! Persons who chant the holy names of Your Lordship are far, far advanced in spiritual life, even if born in families of dog-eaters. Such chanters have undoubtedly performed all kinds of austerities and sacrifices, bathed in all sacred places, and finished all scriptural studies."

   The famous example of this was presented by Lord Caitanya, who accepted Thakura Haridasa as one of His most important disciples. Although Thakura Haridasa happened to take his birth in a Muslim family, he was elevated to the post of namacarya by Lord Caitanya due to his rigidly attended principle of chanting three hundred thousand holy names of the Lord daily: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. And because he chanted the holy name of the Lord constantly, it is understood that in his previous life he must have passed through all the ritualistic methods of the Vedas, known as sabda-brahma. Unless, therefore, one is purified, one cannot take to the principles of Krsna consciousness or become engaged in chanting the holy name of the Lord, Hare Krsna.

Predictions of Kali Yuga

As Pradyumna continued to read on, Srila Prabhupada offered more observations, each time just to the point. From the predictions it seemed that everything in Kali-yuga would become simply a question of show, with no real substance. Prabhupada's examples confirmed this, the liberal bite of sarcasm with which he expressed them making everyone laugh. "Vipratve sutram eva hi. And there is a brahmana. 'What is the proof that he is a brahmana?' 'He has got a sacred thread,' that's all. Or thread. It may not be sacred, purchased on the market. So at least we try to give a sacred thread by ceremony. But anyone can purchase a thread from the market, two paisa worth or one cent worth, and become a brahmana. 'You are a brahmana?' 'Yes, you see my sacred thread?'" He chuckled at the rascaldom. "Finished. 'What you are doing?' 'Never mind.'" Then he added a serious note. "Don't be such brahmanas, at least in our camp. You must follow the rules and regulations. Don't show that I am now doubly initiated, sacred thread. Don't cheat in that way."

Pradyumna read on. "Panditye capalam vacah."

"Pandita, if you can speak very vehemently, any subject matter, people may or may not understand, and they will certify you: 'Oh, this man is very learned.' What you have learned from him? 'Oh, I could not understand, but he's spoke very nicely.' He spoke very nicely. What is that nicely? That capala." Prabhupada threw out a rapid string of gibberish -- "Habadvasyenamdoaguwaddogbignikulaigondulaivaidilaktismai!" Then he laughed along with the devotees. "You go on speaking like that, and people will appreciate, 'Oh, he's a big speaker!'"

On the next item he described the plight of the poor. "When the poor man comes, you'll not give place. If he wants to stay, you'll refuse. No. Because he's poor, he's immediately accepted as dishonest. He may be honest or dishonest, but poverty is a sign for accepting a man as dishonest. Then?"

"Tirtham. Just like there is Vrndavana and here is New Vrindaban. But if you spend ten thousand dollars and go to Vrndavana, then it is pilgrimage. And here is Vrndavanacandra, so that is not very important. Dure vary-ayanam. You have to go far, far away, then it will be pilgrimage. In India, there is Ganges in Calcutta. But they go to Hardwar. Then it is pilgrimage. The same Ganges, coming from Hardwar. Then?"

Pradyumna read out the Sanskrit. "Lavanyam kesa-dharanam."

At this, Prabhupada gave a hearty laugh. "Hmm. Lavanyam, now you know very well in the Western country. Beauty increases by having long hair. Now see how it is current. Who expected that this foretelling is there in the Bhagavatam? To increase beauty, have long hair. Is it not? Just see. How five thousand years this thing was foretold. That is the proof." He grinned at us and declared, "There was no hippie movement then. But Vyasadeva foretold that in the Kali-yuga if one keeps long hair he will think himself as very beautiful. There are so many things."

Then he gave a round-up of the future of this age. "Ultimately, with the advancement of Kali-yuga you'll have no food. Food means there will be no food grains, there will be no milk, no sugar, like that. No fruits. If you get fruits, there will be no pulp, it is simply seeds. These things are there. You get a mango, but a mango means simply the big seed, that's all. So how can you check it? If nature's way, things are going to happen like that, what the scientists will do? If there is no rice, no wheat, will the scientists ...? They can say replace with a pill, but they cannot produce wheat or rice or dal or milk, sugar. That is not possible."

Dhrstadyumna Maharaja interjected that the scientists have fashioned a way for the spacemen to drink their own urine and eat their own stool.

"Yes, that is the most scientific improvement," Srila Prabhupada announced cuttingly. "Yes. That they can do. By scientific improvement, they can drink their own urine -- very tasty!"

One of the devotees wanted to know how the general mass of people could take to Krsna consciousness in the face of all these disqualifications.

Maintaining his good humor Srila Prabhupada replied that Krsna consciousness is the only remedy. "In the Kali-yuga, it is an ocean of faults. How ...? Suppose all over your body there are boils. So where you will apply ointment? You just dip down!"

It was a wonderful evening's meeting. Prabhupada's congenial mood and warmth offered many of the devotees a chance to see him in a much more intimate way than they are used to. Most disciples only see him in the very formal setting of the Srimad-Bhagavatam class, and a few are fortunate to accompany him on his walks. But circumstances like this, with such free and happy exchanges, draw on the hearts and minds of us all, increasing our love and affection for him unlimitedly.

"How Can I Be God"

Prabhupada: So Dharitri, the earthly planet, was lamenting that "Due to the contamination done by the Kali, I am thinking I am lost of all these good qualities." So saucam, satyam, truthfulness. We must remember always that we are part and parcel of God. So we have all the good qualities of God; that is our nature. Just like the drop of the ocean water, it has got all the qualities of the ocean. There is no doubt about it. Therefore, even if we take a little drop of ocean water, because the ocean water is salty, we taste the water salty. The salt is there also, but in minute quantity. The ocean has got millions and trillions of tons of salt, and here, in the drop of the water, there is a grain of salt. But salt is there. Another example: just like a little portion of gold. So that is also gold; it is not iron. So naturally, in our original position we have got all the good qualities of God. Now, due to the material contamination, the godly qualities are now covered. The godly qualities are there, but it is covered. That covering is possible due to our very minuteness, very small quantity. Therefore we are fallible, but Krsna is not fallible.

Another example: big fire and the spark. The spark is also fire, but it has got the potency to become extinguished. Suppose a spark falls down from the original fire, down. It is extinguished. But the big fire does not extinguish. Therefore the big fire, or Krsna, is infallible. His name is Acyuta, infallible. The Mayavada philosopher says that "We are in maya, and as soon as the maya is taken away, we are God." So we are not God, but we manifest our godly qualities when maya is taken away. So long we are covered by maya, our godly qualities are not manifest, but we are not God. Or you are God, but not that God, that big God, but you are a particle of. You can say, "I am God," but you are not that original, chief God. That you are not. This is our philosophy. And that is very genuine. How can I be God? If I am God, then why I have lost my godly qualities? Or why my godly qualities are now covered? This is very common sense. The godly qualities are there. Just like a small particle of the spark, it is carbon. When it comes out of the fire, then it is extinguished. But if you put again to the fire, it is carbon, again bright, brightened. Similarly, we are part and parcel of God, but if we fall down from the association of God, then we become..., appearing like material. But we are not material. It appears that extinguished. This is simultaneously... Acintya-bhedabheda-tattva. We are simultaneously one and different. As part and parcel in quality, we are one; but in quantity God is great, we are small particle.

So originally, we have got all these qualities:

satyam saucam daya ksantis
tyagah santosa arjavam
samo damas tapah samyam
titiksoparatih srutam

Everything is there. But due to material contamination, especially in this age, Kali-yuga... The Kali-yuga is very strong. Time is very strong, that even in contact, coming in contact with Krsna consciousness, they are falling. They are falling. That is due to Kali-yuga. Therefore Mother Dharitri is... Socami rahitam lokam papmana kalineksitam: "Now the Kali-yuga has come. I'm thinking that... I'm very much disturbed that people are losing their original qualities." These qualities are not to be acquired. These qualities are there, but it is covered. Just like a sharpened knife. The cutting power is there, but when it is covered by dirt, it does not cut.

So this is due to our material contamination. Therefore we have to revive it. That sharpness, we have to revive. That is Krsna consciousness movement. If one is actually Krsna conscious, then these qualities will be visible in his person. Yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana sarvair gunais tatra samasate surah. That is the test. If one is actually advanced in Krsna consciousness, you'll not find any fault in him. That is Krsna consciousness. Yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana. If one has got unflinching faith and devotion to the Supreme Personality of Godhead... Yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana sarvair gunaih, all the good qualities. These are the good qualities, mentioned here: satyam saucam, samo damah santosa arjavam, samyam, so many, twenty-six good qualities of Vaisnava. These good qualities will be manifest. Then we understand, "Oh, here is actually a pure devotee." A pure devotee cannot be contaminated, just like God cannot be contaminated. But we are part and parcel, a small God. We can say, "God, I am God," but if you have got sense, you will say that "I am not the great God, but I am small God." That is sense. Because you have got the God qualities, you are not the Supreme. That is not possible. Supreme is Supreme. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam. That is the Vedic injunction, that He is the chief of the eternals. We are all eternal. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. We are not lost or dead on account of our annihilation of this body. That is not possible. Nityah sasvato 'yam na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]. As God is eternal, we are also eternal. As God is sasvata, we are also sasvata, but small, acintya-bhedabheda. This is our philosophy.

So Krsna consciousness movement means to revive the original consciousness. If one is actually in Krsna, he'll be truthful. Truthfulness. These are the qualities. Cleanliness, always clean, taking thrice bath. Cloth clean, mind clean, body clean, activities clean, desire clean, thinking clean -- everything clean. No contamination. This is the test. "I am doing all nasty things, and I am advertising ‘I am advanced devotee.' " What rascal you are? You are doing all nonsense and you are advanced? But they have no shame even, to call themselves... Shameless. Shameless, even not gentlemen. Cheating, and still, he is advertising, "I am advanced." But a person who is actually in Krsna consciousness or actual... Sadhu-sastra-guru-vakya, tinete koriya aikya. We have to...

Just like if you go to the chemical laboratory, you are testing the characteristic. In the book there is characteristic, even an ordinary chemical. Now, they say... Take, for example, salt. It is called? Chemical name is sodium chloride. Eh? Sodium chloride. So in the book you'll find sodium chloride, and the characteristics, "It is like this. It is like this. It is like this." The color, the taste, the composition, so many things are there. Similarly... How we are testing the purity of sodium chloride? From the books. Similarly, here is the characteristic of pure devotee. Characteristics. You test whether he's truthful. "He's not truthful, sir." Then he's not pure devotee. He's doing something... He promised before his spiritual master, before the Deity, before the fire, "No illicit sex," but he's having illicit sex. So how he is advanced? How he's advanced? He's not even truthful, the first qualification. He's unclean. Truthfulness. Saucam, means very clean. Very clean means... Just... We utter this mantra,

apavitrah pavitro va
sarvavastham gato 'pi va
yah smaret pundarikaksam
sa bahyabhyantara-sucih

Suci, saucam, suci.

So the devotee must be clean, inside and outside, both. Outside cleaning by taking bath, washing the body with oil or soap or soda, and inside, inside, materially, there will be no unclean things, stool, unnecessary stool. That means one must evacuate every morning and evening. If we eat more, then we have to evacuate twice. But if we eat less, then once evacuation is sufficient. It is said, yogi, bhogi, and rogi. Yogi means spiritually advanced, and bhogi means materialist, and rogi means diseased. It is a common saying. A yogi evacuates only once. That is yogi. And bhogi, because he eats more, so he evacuates twice. And one who evacuates more than twice, he's rogi, diseased. Yogi, bhogi, rogi. So everything has got routine work. saucam. So you'll feel healthy. If you have evacuated nicely, you have washed inside and outside, taken your bath, then you'll feel always refreshed. And unless you feel refreshed, you cannot very nicely chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra or serve Krsna. Therefore cleanliness is required. Apavitrah pavitro va. But... Apavitrah pavitro va sarvavastham gato 'pi va. If one takes to Krsna consciousness and follows the rules and regulations, then automatically he becomes clean, inside and outside. Automatically. Apavitrah pavitro va. What for we are accepting initiation? In any condition, in any condition we shall be purified by chanting Hare Krsna, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12], if we chant really.

There are three stages of chanting. One chanting is with offense, beginning. There are ten kinds of offenses. We have described many times. If we chant with offense, that is the, that is one stage. If we chant offenseless, that is one stage. And if we chant pure... Offenseless is not yet pure. You're trying to make offenseless, but not yet offenseless. But when there is pure chanting, that is success. Nama, namabhasa, and suddha-nama. So our aim is... This was discussed. You'll find in Caitanya-caritamrta, discussion between Haridasa Thakura and a brahmana. So by chanting, we can come to the highest stage of perfection. In the beginning there may be offenses, but if we try to avoid the offenses, then it is namabhasa. Namabhasa means not actually pure name, but almost pure. Namabhasa, and suddha-nama. When one chants suddha-nama, name, holy name of God, then he is on the platform of loving platform with Krsna. That is the perfectional stage. And in namabhasa stage, not in pure, marginal, between pure and offensive, that is mukti. You become mukta, liberated from material bondage. And if we chant offensively, then we remain in the material world. Bhaktivinoda Thakura has said, namakara bahira haya nama nahi haya(?). It is mechanical, "Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna," but still it is not Hare Krsna. Namakara, nama bahira haya, namakara, nama nahi haya.

So we must be purely chanting. But we should not be disappointed. Even impure... Therefore we must have fixed chanting process. Because we are not in the pure stage. Therefore, by force... Just like a boy in the school. We had this training in our childhood school. Our teacher would ask me, "You write ten pages, handwriting." So that means practicing ten pages, my handwriting will be set up. So even if we do not follow sixteen rounds, where is the question of chanting Hare Krsna? So don't be artificial; don't be, I mean to say, a showbottle. Be real thing. And that is wanted. If you want real benefit of spiritual life, don't be showbottle. Do you know showbottle? The medical shop, a big bottle. It is full of water only. And color is red or blue or something like. But the real medicine does not require... (aside:) No, not now. Real medicine does not require a showbottle. A small... If one can chant purified offenseless, once krsna-nama, he is free from all material bondage. Once only. Eka krsna name yata papa haya, papi haya tata papa kari baro nahi(?).

So saucam. saucam means inward cleanliness and outward cleanliness. saucam. Inside, we should be pure, purely thinking, no contamination. We should not think anyone as my enemy. "Everyone is friend. I am... I am not pure; therefore I am thinking somebody as my enemy." There are so many symptoms. So saucam: one should be clean, inside and outside. Satyam saucam daya. That daya I already explained. Daya means to become compassionate to the fallen, one who has fallen, one who is in distress. So actually, the whole population at the present moment, they're fallen. Krsna says,

yada yada hi dharmasya
glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthanam adharmasya
tadatmanam srjamy aham
 [Bg. 4.7]

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge
 [Bg. 4.8]

So at the present moment in the Kali, Kali-yuga, they are, practically they're all demons. All demons. So if Krsna... Of course, sometimes it will come that Krsna has to come here simply to kill the demons. That is Kalki avatara. That is described by Jayadeva Gosvami. What is that? Kesava dhrta-kalki-sarira jaya jagadisa hare. Kalau, dhumaketum iva kim api karalam, mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi karavalam. Mleccha, the mleccha, this word, yavana, these... There are words in Vedic language, mleccha, yavana. Yavana means meat-eaters. Yavana. It does not mean only Europeans are yavana, and Americans, not, Indians are not yavana. No. Anyone who eats meat, he's a yavana. Yavana means meat-eater. And mleccha means unclean. One who does not follow Vedic principles, he's called mleccha. Just like... As the Muhammadans say, kafir. One who does not follow Muslim religion, they are called kafir. That is religious point of view. And the Christians say "heathens." One who does not follow Christian religion, they are called heathens. Is it not? Similarly, anyone who does not follow Vedic principle, he's called mleccha. So time will come when nobody will follow Vedic principles of life. Therefore, mleccha.

So mleccha-nivaha, when all the people will become mlecchas, nobody following the Vedic principles, mleccha-nivaha-nidhane, at that time there is no more preaching, simply killing. Nivaha-nidhane kalayasi karavalam. In this age a very fearful, not feature, but action is very fearful. Mleccha-nivaha-nidhane kalayasi karavalam dhumaketum iva. Just like now they are apprehending the appearance of a comet. So Krsna will appear just like a comet. Dhumaketum iva, dhumaketum iva, dhumaketum iva. Kalayasi karavalam. So that is the end of Kali-yuga, that people will be so mlecchacara, unclean habits, they, dull... Now they have already become, already become. They have no brain. Even big, big, so-called... [break]

...maha-vadanya, very munificent incarnation. Or magnanimous. Maha-vadanyavatara. Namo maha-vadanyaya krsna-prema... He is giving krsna-prema, love of Krsna. You... One cannot understand Krsna. It is so difficult.

manusyanam sahasresu
kascid yatati siddhaye
yatatam api siddhanam
kascin mam vetti tattvatah
 [Bg. 7.3]

To understand Krsna is not easy job. But Krsna in the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu is so compassionate, not only He's giving Himself, Krsna, but He's giving krsna-prema, love of Krsna. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's avatara. Daya. Maha-vadanyavatara. So whatever Krsna consciousness movement is going forward, it is due to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's magnanimous compassion for the poor people suffering in this Kali-yuga. Otherwise, to become Krsna conscious is not very easy job, is not easy job. So those who are getting the chance of becoming Krsna conscious by the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they should not lose the opportunity. It will be suicidal. Don't fall down. It is very easy. Simply chanting by Hare Krsna mantra, not always, twenty-four hours, although Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends, kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc. adi 17.31], always chant. That is the principle. But we cannot do that because we are so much overwhelmed by the influence of Kali. So at least sixteen rounds. Don't miss this. Don't miss this. What is the difficulty, sixteen rounds? At most it will take two hours. You have got twenty-four hours. You want to sleep; all right, sleep, ten hours sleep. That is not recommended. Don't sleep more than six hours. But they want to sleep. They want to sleep twenty-four hours. That is their desire in Kali-yuga. But, no. Then you'll be wasting time. Minimize eating, sleeping, mating and defending. When it is nil, that is perfection.

Because these are bodily necessities. Eating, sleeping, mating, defending that is bodily necessities. But I am not this body. Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram... [Bg. 2.13]. So that realization takes time. But when we are actually advancing in Krsna consciousness, we must know our duty. Sleeping not more than six hours. Utmost eight hours. Utmost, those who cannot control. But not ten hours, twelve hours, fifteen hours, no. Then what is the use of...? Somebody went to see one advanced devotee, and at nine o'clock he was sleeping. And he's advanced devotee. Eh? Is not that? So what is...? What kind of devotee he is? Devotee must rise early in the morning, by four o'clock. By five o'clock, he must finish his bathing and other things. Then he takes to chanting and so many... Twenty-four hours' business must be there. So sleeping is not good. The Gosvamis used to sleep only two hours. I also write at night book, and I also sleep, not more then three hours. But I take sometimes little, sleep more. Not like... I don't imitate the Gosvamis. That try to avoid. And avoid sleeping means if we eat less, then we'll avoid. Eating, sleeping. After eating, there is sleeping. So if we eat more, then more sleeping. If we eat less, then less sleeping. Eating, sleeping, mating. And mating should be avoided. That is a great stricture. Sex life should be minimized as far as possible. Therefore we have got this restriction, "No illicit sex." Sex life, we don't say... That you cannot do, nobody can do. Therefore sex life means married life, a little concession. A license, "All right, you take this license." But not illicit sex. Then you'll never be able.

So eating, sleeping, mating and defending. And defending, we are defending in so many ways, but still, war is there, and the onslaught of material nature... Your country is defending so nicely, but now the petrol is taken away. You cannot defend. Similarly, everything can be taken away at any moment. So depend on Krsna for defending, defenses. Avasya raksibe krsna. This is called surrender. Surrender, means... Krsna says that "You surrender unto Me," sarva-dharman parityajya [Bg. 18.66]. Let us believe this, that "Krsna is asking to surrender. Let me surrender. He must protect me in danger." That is called surrender. "Now, I am surrendering to Krsna, but for my defense I'm making another arrangement." Then I have no faith in Krsna. If I believe in Krsna, then we must believe that Krsna will... Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami. Believe. Satyam saucam daya ksantih. Ksanti means toleration? What is that? Hm? See ksanti.

Pradyumna: (reads) "Self-control even if there is cause of anger."

Prabhupada: Yes, tolerate, yes. Ksanti. We should not be intolerant. Even somebody has done some wrong unto me, tapasvi. Ksama-rupa-tapasvinam. Tapasvi, those who are advancing in Krsna consciousness, undergoing tapasya, austerities, their first qualification is to forgive the offender. This is the qualification. Tapasvinam. Ksama-rupa-tapasvinam. Then tyaga. Tyaga means to give your energy for Krsna. Everyone is giving energy for his sense gratification. When we give our energy, Krsna... Pararthe prajna utsrjet(?). This is Canakya Pandita. Sannimitte varam tyago vinas emiyate sati. Sannmivitte varamm tyagah(?). Tyaga means to give in charity for others' benefit. That is called tyaga. So what is the best tyaga? When you give up everything... [break]

...such thing. You do your best, but depend, the result, on Krsna. That is wanted. If somebody comes to attack you, you must also attack. You first attack. But you should not think that "I am so powerful. I can gain victory over you." Depend on Krsna, do your best. Yudhyasva mam anusmara [Bg. 8.7]. This is our policy. When there is question of fight, we have to fight. Just like in Bombay, we fought, but the result, we depended on Krsna. We have come out victorious. There was no hope of getting that land. It was regular fight. The whole Bombay city became agitated. Yes, in Bombay. But we are victorious, because we depended on Krsna. I thought... Simply I prayed to Krsna, "My dear Lord, You are seated there on that place. If You are removed, then it will be suicidal. You must remain there." My only prayer was that "I don't care for this land, but You are seated there, I cannot tolerate this insult that You will be removed from there." So Krsna saved our face. He's still remaining there.

So we should be like that. We should fight to our best, but depend the result on Krsna. Don't try to take the credit for yourself. That is wanted.

Devotee (1): So, Srila Prabhupada, should devotees in ISKCON, should a certain section of devotees in ISKCON be trained as ksatriyas? Should they be specially trained?

Prabhupada: Well, a devotee is neither ksatriya, neither brahmana; he's servant of Krsna. That's all. These brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra, they are on the material platform. On the spiritual platform, there is no such distinction. Spiritual platform, the master and the servant. You remain a servant. If you have to act as ksatriya, act like that. If you act as a brahmana, act like that. If you... That is our superficial... A devotee's always servant of God. Whatever service is required, as a brahmana, as a ksatriya, as a vaisya, it doesn't matter. We are ready. It does not mean that because we are fighting, we become ksatriya. No. Sa gunan... These are the divisions of the three qualities. But a devotee's above... [break] ...all these things. Krsna's devotees are above all these things. You have to become a pure devotee, not a ksatriya, not a brahmana, not an all... That is not required. All right.

Devotee (2): You said that one mistake of the neophyte devotee is to think that he is suffering under some condition, some distress, and that it is due to the circumstances under which the distress occurred. And my question is, Can the change of one's service, can changing the type of service one's performing, can that help him to achieve the desired perfection in relationship with the spiritual master and Krsna?

Prabhupada: So what is the real proposal? I do not follow. Why don't you say frankly? This is... Why in a (laughs) jugglery way? State what is the fact?

Devotee (2): Well, like, if one is in a big temple, he's a cook in a big temple.

Prabhupada: Yes. In a big temple, the cooker and the man who is worshiping the Deity, and the man who is sweeping over, they're all one. There is no distinction. There is no such material dis... In the material world, if somebody's doing nice job, he is greater, and if somebody's not nice job, he's smaller. In spiritual world, there is no such distinction.

Devotee (2): So one is like that, in a comfortable situation...

Prabhupada: Comfortable situation is also sense gratification. Any situation, we shall have to serve Krsna. That is Krsna consciousness. Not that "If it is comfortable to me, I shall do it." That is sense gratification. That is sense gratification. That is not spiritual; that is material. "Comfortable or uncomfortable, it doesn't matter. If Krsna wants it, I must do it." That is wanted. That is wanted. As soon as I discriminate "This is comfortable, this is uncomfortable," that is material.

Devotee (3): Prabhupada, how can we know what type of service Krsna...

Prabhupada: Therefore you have got spiritual master. Why he is there? Therefore you have to accept spiritual master who will give you direction. You cannot do it. If you manufacture your own..., then go to hell. Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau, tasyaite kathita hy arthah [SU 6.23]. Krsna is there; guru is there. Why should you manufacture your own way? If you are sincere, Krsna will dictate from within. Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam [Bg. 10.10]. Find out this verse. Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam, buddhi-yogam dadami tam.

Pradyumna: 10.10

Prabhupada: Krsna is ready to give you instruction. The spiritual master is ready. Why should you do at your whims, and do something wrong and go to hell? Yes?

Bali-mardana:

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
 [Bg. 10.10]

"To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me."

Prabhupada: That's all. Krsna is within you. He'll give you. As soon as you become a pure devotee, all dictation will come from within. And besides that, Krsna is helping, inside and outside. Outside is spiritual master; inside Krsna Himself. Where is the difficulty? Simply you have to become sincere. That's all. Everything is there. But if we become cheaters, we do, say something before Krsna, before the spiritual master, before fire, and do something else, then there is no question of dictation from Krsna. You do your sat-san(?). Sva-karmana, by your own work, you suffer or enjoy. There is no enjoyment, simply suffering. That's all. Material world, there is no question of enjoyment. Simply we concoct, "This is enjoyment." This is not enjoyment. It is suffering.

Devotee (4): Srila Prabhupada, you spoke about the three stages of chanting? And you were speaking about the middle stage, the clearing stage? Is that... I didn't quite understand how that was explained. Is that like we're trying not to be offensive. It's offensive, but we're trying...

Prabhupada: No, you do not try to be offensive, but because your past habit, you become offensive. Therefore ten kinds of offenses should be avoided. That we speak and give in list when initiation. There should be... Ten kinds of offenses should be avoided. Guror avajna sruti-sastra-nindanam, samyam subha-kriya api pramadah, namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. These are things. The most offensive is that "Krsna... By chanting Hare Krsna mantra, I become sinless. So in the morning let me do, or in the, at night, let me do all sinful activities; in the morning I shall chant Hare Krsna, and it will, everything will be nullified." This is the greatest offense. Namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. "Because I am chanting, therefore I can do anything sinful. It will be counteracted." This is the greatest rascaldom, sinful activities. Yes. Namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. Papa-buddhih. Nama... By chanting Hare Krsna mantra we become immediately sinless. That's a fact. But why shall we commit again? Just like the Christian people, they go to the church, confession: "Sir, I did this, all these sinful activities last week." "All right, pay me something." Again, from Monday, beginning sinful activities; come on Sunday. These are not allowed. You can be excused, but don't do again. If you continue to do it, that is not very... Then you have to suffer. Once or twice, you may be excused. But if you continue to do that, you must be punished. Namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. (indistinct question by devotee) Yes, everything under the direction of the spiritual master. Why you are asking? (indistinct) You do not know these things? Why do you ask this question? It must be, according to the direction of the spiritual master. Why do you ask that question? Therefore, adau gurvasrayam. Whatever... [break] (end)

INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK 'SREE KRISHNA CHAITANYA'

His Divine Grace Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Maharaja Srila Prabhupada

MEN of culture are often found to devote themselves in acquiring knowledge of various subjects which could prove efficacious to them in their needs; so we may not confuse to accept all readers in the same line of thought. The best scrutinisers of knowledge in their cultural extension should possess all skill and dexterity to get their most covetable end having had a care for Eternity and uninterrupted Blissful unalloyed Knowledge. This incarnate of the acme of knowledge-seekers will be the best reader of this book when they can have the privilege of comparing the merits of different views of pure theists. Mental speculationists have diverse objects of investigation and their diversity of seeking Knowledge would simply disturb the peaceful mentality having been tempted by the duping features of external manifestations, quite suitable and dove-tailing the present purposes of enjoyment by their imperfect senses.

The writer has got the prime object of furnishing a comparative study in which the position of a reader has the highest place. This is his only ambition, of healing the depraved mentality of the so-called culturists of True Knowledge. But the readers have different motives of utilising the product of their enterprise of perusing the book. One class of readers are found to criticise the merits and demerits of the writer in order to establish their superiority, with a view to puff up their vanity. Another class is observed to muse over the subject by spending their time for the gratification of their senses. The third section of readers mean to profit by reading the book in order to regulate their Fife for a better purpose. The under-estimation of a desirable element for some utilisation through temporal gratification of senses, would not equipoise the third position of the reader who will surely mark the distinctive situation by comparing other things and agree with the author in spending his valuable time for true amelioration.

The body of the book will appear before readers as a historical account of the Journey of life of a Hero. But the Hero is not an ordinary mundane hero for a hallucinative ambition with a spiritual tinge. The account will no doubt show that the targeted Object of the manifestive spiritual world is Eternal and identical with the Hero of the speaker. Hasty conclusions will be pouring forth to oppose this by welcoming anthropomorphic and apotheotic thoughts. The delineations will prove that the Object pointed to is beyond the comprehension of crippled senses. And the Absolute Eternity made up of Pure Knowledge and Incessant bliss is never to be had within the compass of our senses. All objects of the phenomena which are comprehended by senses have temporal situation and deformed entity void of different 'qualities' that are always submissive to senses.

Sree Krishna-Chaitanya's inculcations of the Personality of Godhead cannot be restricted to or accused as Idolatry. Idols are constructed of mundane materials and are subject to the inspection of senses. The Eternal Absolute does not exactly submit to these senses, as He does not put Himself as a shareholder of phenomenal things. Whichever comes under senses has equal value with one of Nature's products and forms to be a subject of the jurisdiction of senses. The Eternal Absolute is inconceivable by limited senses. The partially eclipsed views of the Absolute are shaky, non-absolute, liable to transformation and under the clutch of the span of Time. The physical limitations are all accommodated in Space, Time and particular entities. The naming of the Transcendental Absolute through the lips of a mundane agent will surely seek after a size, a colour, etc., and must undergo the ocular examination. The Transcendental Absolute should in no case submit to our dermal perceptions, neither to our nasal or lingual activities as well.

Where is the scriptural evidence for Sri Chaitanya being
Sri Sri Radha-and-Krishna combined?

namo maha-vadanyaya
krishna-prema-pradaya te
krishnaya krishna-caitanya-
namne gaura-tvishe namah

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Sri Chaitanya, who is the most merciful incarnation. He has appeared in a golden color for the purpose of freely distributing pure love of Krishna."

In the Atharva Veda (Purusha-bodini Upanishad) it is said:

saptame gaura-varna-vishnor ity anena sva-shaktya caikyam etya prante pratar avatirya saha svaih sva-manum shikshayati

"In the seventh manvantara, the Supreme Lord will, accompanied by His own associates, descend in a golden form. He will teach the chanting of His own holy names."

It is further stated in the Atharva Veda:

ito 'ham krita-sannyaso 'vatarishyami sa-guno nirvedo nishkamo bhu-girbanas tira-stho 'lakanandayah kalau catuh-sahasrabdhopari panca-sahasrabhyantare gaura-varno dirghangah sarva-lakshana-yukta ishvara-prarthito nija-rasasvado bhakta-rupo mishrakhyo vidita-yogah syam

"The Supreme Lord Himself says: When between four thousand and five thousand years of Kali-yuga have passed, I will descend to the earth in a place by the Ganges' shore. I will be a tall, saintly brahmana devotee of the Lord, and have a golden complexion. I will be renounced and free from all desire. I will accept the order of renunciation (sannyasa). I will be a devotee advanced in bhakti-yoga. I will chant the holy names of the Lord. I will taste the sweet mellows of My own devotional service. Only the great devotees will understand Me."

In the Sama Veda the Lord states:

tathaham krita-sannyaso bhu-girbano 'vatarisye tire 'lakanandayah punah punar ishvara-prarthitah sa-parivaro niralambo nirdhuteh kali-kalmasha-kavalita-janavalambanaya

"To deliver the people devoured by the sins of Kali-yuga, I will, accompanied by My associates, descend to the earth in a place by the Ganges shore. I will be a brahmana avadhuta sannyasi. Again and again I will chant the holy names of the Lord."

In the Krishna Upanishad it is stated:

sa eva bhagavan yuge turiye 'pi brahma-kule jayamanah sarva upanishadah uddidirshuh sarvani dharma-shastrani vistarayishnuh sarvan api janan santarayishnuh sarvan api vaishnavan dharman vijrimbhayan sarvan api pashandan nicakhana

"In the Kali-yuga, Lord Krishna will appear in a brahmana's family. He will teach the message of the Upanishads and the dharma-shastras. He will defeat the atheists and offenders and He will establish the truth of Vaishnava dharma."

In the eleventh canto of Srimad Bhagavatam the following verse is found:

krishna-varnam tvishakrishnam
sangopangastra-parshadam
yajnaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah

"In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead, who constantly sings the name of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions."

In the seventh canto of Srimad Bhagavatam is the following verse describing the Lord's incarnations:

channah kalau yad abhava tri-yugo 'tha sa tvam

"Because in Kali-yuga You appear in a covered incarnation, you are therefore known as Tri-yuga (one who appears in only three yugas)."

The incarnation of Sri Chaitanya is a hidden incarnation because He appears in the guise of His devotee. This covered incarnation is confirmed in both the Adi Purana and the Narada Purana in the following verse:

aham eva dvija-shreshtho
nityam pracchanna-vigrahah
bhagavad-bhakta-rupena
lokam rakshami sarvada

"My true identity always concealed, I will assume the form of a brahmana devotee of the Lord. In this form I will deliver the worlds."

In the Kurma Purana the following statement is found:

kalina dahyamananam
uddharaya tanu-bhritam
janma prathama-sandhyayam
bhavishyati dvi jalaye

"To deliver the conditioned souls burning in the troubles of Kali-yuga, in the first sandhya of that age the Lord will take birth in a brahmana's home."

In the Garuda Purana the Lord Himself states:

kalina dahyamananam
paritranaya tanu-bhritam
janma prathama-sandhyayam
karishyami dvi jatishu

"To deliver the conditioned souls burning in the troubles of Kali-yuga, in the first sandhya of that age I will take birth among the brahmanas."

aham purno bhavishyami
yuga-sandhau visheshatah
mayapure navadvipe
bhavishyami shaci-sutah

"In My original spiritual form, perfect and complete, I will become the son of Shachi-devi in Navadvipa Mayapura at the begining of Kali-yuga.

Sri Chaitanya was born in Mayapura, a subsection of the holy town of Navadvipa, to Shachi-devi in 1486 AD, aproximately 4,500 years after the beginning of the Kali-yuga.

Elsewhere in the Garuda Purana it is said:

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam
lakshmi-kanto bhavishyati
daru-brahma-samipa-sthah
sannyasi gaura-vigrahah

"In the first sandhya of Kali-yuga, the Lord will assume a golden form. First He will be the husband of Lakshmi, and then He will be a sannyasi who stays near Lord Jagannatha at Puri."

Sri Chaitanya first married His eternal consort Sri Lakshmi-priya Devi before taking sannyasa at the age of twenty-four. After taking sannyasa He left Navadvipa in Bengal, and resided in the holy city of Puri in Orissa. Lord Jagannatha, the presiding deity of Puri is known in the Puranas by the name daru-brahma or "the Lord who is wood". This is because the Jagannatha deities in Puri are made from Neem wood.

Also in the Garuda Purana:

yo reme saha-ballavi ramayate vrindavane 'har-nisham
yah kamsam ni jaghana kaurava-rane yah pandavanam sakha
so 'yam vainava-danda-mandita-bhujah sannyasa-veshah svayam
nihsandeham upagatah kshiti-tale caitanya-rupah prabhuh

"The Supreme Lord who enjoyed pastimes with the gopis, who day and night filled the people of Vrindavana with happiness, who killed kamsa, and who in the war between the Kauravas made friendship with the Pandavas, will come again to the earth. Of this there is no doubt. His arm will be decorated with a bamboo danda (stick), He will be a sannyasi and His name will be Chaitanya."

The custom is that one begins carrying a bamboo rod (danda) after one takes sannyasa. Sri Chaitanya was an eka-danda sannyasi, thus He carried a single bamboo rod.

In the Devi Purana we find the following statement:

nama-siddhanta-sampatti
prakashana-parayanah
kvacit sri-krishna-chaitanya-
nama loke bhavishyati

"The Lord will again appear in this world. His name will be Sri Krishna Chaitanya and He will spread the chanting of the Lord's holy names.

Sri Chaitanya perfectly illuminated the glories of the nama-siddhanta as predicted in this verse.

In the Nrisimha Purana it is mentioned:

satye daitya-kuladhi-nasha-samaye simhordhva-martyakritis
tretayam dasa-kandharam paribhavan rameti namakritih
gopalan paripalayan vraja-pure bharam haran dvapare
gaurangah priya-kirtanah kali-yuge caitanya-nama prabhuh

"The Supreme Lord, who in the Satya-yuga appeared as a half-man half-lion to cure a terrible disease that had ravaged the daityas, and who in Treta-yuga appeared as Rama, a person who defeated the ten-headed Ravana , and who in Dvapara-yuga removed the earth's burden and protected the gopa people of Vraja-pura, will appear again in the Kali-yuga. His form will be golden, He will delight in chanting the Lord's holy names, and His name will be Chaitanya."

In the Padma Purana we find the following statement from the Lord:

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam
gaurango 'ham mahi-tale
bhagirathi-tate ramye
bhavishyami shaci-sutah

"In the first sandhya of Kali-yuga I will appear on the earth in a beautiful place by the Gange's shore. I will be the son of Shachi-devi and My complexion will be golden."

In the Narada Purana the Lord says:

aham eva kalau vipra
nityam pracchanna-vigrahah
bhagavad-bhakta-rupena
lokan rakshami sarvada

"O brahmana, in the age of Kali I will appear disguised as a devotee of the Lord and I will deliver all the worlds."

divija bhuvi jayadhvam
jayadhvam bhakta-rupinah
kalau sankirtanarambhe
bhavishyami shaci-sutah

"O demigods, in the Kali-yuga take birth as devotees on the earth. I will appear as the son of Shachi in Kali-yuga to start the sankirtana movement."

Nama-sankirtana, or the chanting of the Lord's names is the yuga dharma for the age of Kali. Establishing this was Sri Chaitanya's primary purpose for incarnating.

In the Bhavishya Purana we find:

anandashru-kala-roma-
harsha-purnam tapo-dhana
sarve mam eva drakshyanti
kalau sannyasa-rupinam

"O sage whose wealth is austerity, in the Kali-yuga everyone will see My form as a sannyasi, a form filled with tears of bliss and bodily hairs standing erect in ecstacy."

Sri Chaitanya would always display such symptoms of pure love of Krishna. When chanting the names of the Lord tears would flow from His eyes, and the hair on His body would stand erect. In his life Sri Chaitanya personally only composed eight verses known as Shikshashtakam. In the sixth verse He states:

nayanam galad-ashru-dharaya
vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira
pulakair nicitam vapuh kada
tava nama-grahane bhavishyati

"O my Lord, when will my eyes be decorated with tears of love flowing constantly when I chant Your holy name? When will my voice choke up, and when will the hairs of my body stand on end at the recitation of Your name?"

Then in the seventh verse He says:

yugayitam nimeshena
cakshusha pravrishayitam
shunyayitam jagat sarvam
govinda-virahena me

"O Govinda! Feeling Your separation, I am considering a moment to be like many years. Tears are flowing from my eyes like torents of rain, and I am feeling all vacant in the world in your absence."

These emotional symptoms of devotion were constantly being displayed by Sri Chaitanya.

In the Matsya Purana the following statement is made by the Lord:

mundo gaurah su-dirghangas
tri-srotas-tira-sambhavah
dayaluh kirtana-grahi
bhavishyami kalau yuge

"In the Kali-yuga I will take birth in a place where three rivers meet. I will be golden color and tall. I will have a shaven head. I will be very merciful, and I will eagerly chant the holy names."

The place where three rivers meet is Navadvipa. It is the custom that eka-danda sannyasis completely shave their head when they take sannyasa, and Sri Chaitanya followed this principle.

This same verse is also found in the Vayu Purana with just two words appearing differently. The Vayu Purana verse mentions the Ganges river instead of 'three rivers'.

In the Vamana Purana the Lord says:

kali-ghora-tamas-channat
sarvan acara-var jitan
shaci-garbhe ca sambhuya
tarayishyami narada

"O Narada, taking birth in Shachi-devi's womb, I will deliver the sinful people from the terrible darkness of Kali-yuga."

In the Vayu Purana the Lord states:

paurnamasyam phalgunasya
phalguni-riksha-yogatah
bhavishye gaura-rupena
shaci-garbhe purandarat

"In the month of Phalguna, when the star phalguni is conjoined with the full moon, I will appear in a golden form begotten by Purandara in Shachi-devi's womb."

Sri Chaitanya's father was known by the names Purandara Mishra and Jagannatha Mishra. Sri Chaitanya was born on the full moon day of the month of Phalguna.

tatra dvi ja-kulam prapto
bhavishyami janalaye

"I will take birth in a brahmana family in the city of Navadvipa, by the Ganges shore."

bhakti-yoga-pradanaya
lokasyanugrahaya ca

krishna-chaitanya-nama-dhrik

"In order to show mercy to the people and engage them in devotional service, I will accept sannyasa. Then My name will be Sri Krishna Chaitanya."

In the Ananta Samhita we find:

svarnadi-tiram ashritya
navadvipe dvijalaye
sampradatum bhakti-yogam
laksyanugrahaya ca

"To show mercy to the people and give them devotional service, the Supreme Personality of Godhead will appear in a brahmana's home in Navadvipa by the Gange's shore."

Then the Lord states:

avatirno bhavishyami
kalau nija-ganaih saha
shaci-garbhe navadvipe
svardhuni-parivarite

"In Kali-yuga I will descend to the earth with My associates. In Navadvipa, which is surrounded by the Ganges, I will take birth in Shachi-devi's womb."

In the Urdhvamnaya Tantra it is mentioned:

kalau purandarat shacyam
gaura-rupo vibhu smritah

"In kali-yuga I will appear in a golden form as the son of Purandara and Shachi-devi."

In the Krishna-yamala it is stated:

aham purno bhavishyami
yuga-sandhau visheshatah
mayapure navadvipe
varam ekam shaci-sutah

"During the first sandhya of Kali-yuga I will descend, with all My powers and glories, to Mayapura in Navadvipa and become the son of Shachi-devi."

In the Brahma-yamala:

athavaham dhara-dhamni
bhutva mad-bhakta-rupa-dhrik
mayayam ca bhavishyami
kalau sankirtanagame

"I will appear on the earth in the garb of My devotee. In the Kali-yuga I will appear in Mayapura to start the sankirtana movement."

kalau prathama-sandhyayam
hari-nama-pradayakah
bhavishyati navadvipe
shaci-garbhe janardanah

"In the first sandhya of kali-yuga, Lord Krishna will appear in Navadvipa, in Shachi-devi's womb. In that incarnation He will teach the chanting of Lord Hari's holy names."

In the Ananta Samhita we find:

gauri shri-radhika devi
harih krishna prakirtitah
ekatvac ca tayoh sakshad
iti gaura-harim viduh

"The golden Goddess Radha is known by the name Gauri and the dark Lord Krishna is known by the name Hari. Aware that both of them have combined, the wise call Him as Gaurahari."

navadvipe tu tah sakhyo
bhakta-rupa-dharah priye
ekangam shri-gaura-harim
sevante satatam muda

"O beloved, assuming the forms of devotees the gopis will also take birth in Navadvipa. With great happiness they will again and again serve Lord Gaurahari, who is Radha and krishna combined in a single form."

In the Krishna-yamala we further find:

iti matva kripa-sindhur
amshena kripaya harih
prasanno bhakta-rupena
kalav avatarishyati

"Thinking in this way, Lord Krishna, who is an ocean of mercy, mercifully decided to appear as a devotee in Kali-yuga."

gaurango nada-gambhirah
sva-namamrita-lalasah
dayaluh kirtana-grahi
bhavishyati shaci-sutah

"His limbs will be golden and His voice deep. He will be very merciful. He will yearn to taste the nectar of His own holy name. He will be attached to chanting His own holy name. He will be the son of Shachi-devi."

In the Jaimini-bharata it is said:

anyavatara bahavah
sarve sadharana matah
kalau krishnavataras tu
gudhah sannyasa-vesha-dhrik

"Lord Krishna descends to the world in many different forms. However in Kali-yuga, His incarnation is hidden. At that time He appears disguised as a sannyasi."

In the Yoga-vashishtha we find:

kaleh prathama-sandhyayam
gaurango 'sau mahi-tale
bhagirathi-tate ramye
bhavishyati sanatanah

"In the first sandhya of Kali-yuga, on the earth, by the beautiful shore of the Ganges, the Lord will appear in His eternal golden form."

In the Skanda Purana:

antah krishna bahir gaurah
sangopangastra-parshadah
shaci-garbhe samapnuyam
maya-manusha-karma-krit

"Outwardly of golden complexion, but inwardly Krishna, I will take My birth in the womb of Shachi-devi. Accompanied by My associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions, I will assume the role of a human being."

In the Kapila Tantra we find the following statements:

kvacit sapi krishnam aha
shrinu mad-vacanam priya
bhavata ca sahaikatmyam
icchami bhavitum prabho

mama bhavanvitam rupam
hridayahlada-karanam
parasparanga-madhya-stham
krida-kautuka-mangalam

paraspara-svabhavadhyam
rupam ekam pradarshaya
shrutva tu preyasi-vakyam
parama-priti-suchakam

svecchayasid yatha purvam
utsahena jagad-guruh
premalingana-yogena
hy acintya-shakti-yogatah

radha-bhava-kanti-yuktam
murtim ekam prakasayan
svapne tu darshayam asa
radhikayai svayam prabhuh

"Then Sri Radha said to Lord Krishna: O beloved, please hear My words. I yearn to become one with you. Please show a form where You and I embrace and Our two bodies become one, a form filled with the love I bear for You, a form filled with auspicious and blissful pastimes, a form that brings bliss to the heart, a form that unites Our two natures.'

"Hearing His beloved's words, which were filled with joy and love, Lord krishna passionately embraced Her. Then by the touch of His inconceivable potency Their two forms joined and became one, a single form endowed with Sri Radha's divine love and glorious splendour. In a dream Lord Krishna showed all this to Sri Radha."

Other direct references are found in the Vishvasara Tantra, Kularnava Tantra, Brahma-rahasya, and Vishnu-yamala. Besides these there are complete chapters about Sri Chaitanya's incarnation in the Vayu Purana and Bhavishya Purana, which are too long to quote here. Also there is a text by the name Chaitanya Upanishad within the Atharva Veda, which explains the Lord's incarnation in Kali-yuga. I have not cited it here, as it was rediscovered in recent times, so most people will reject it's authenticity, or at least its value as evidence.

Sri Chaitanya's incarnation was a hidden incarnation, thus He burried references to His appearance deep within the ocean of vedic texts. His desire was that His disguise would not be betrayed, so He made sure these references would remain hidden until after His incarnation was complete. These text's were always present, but by the inconceivable yoga-maya of the Lord, He covered His true identity even from the Vedic scholars and panditas. Only the pure devotees understood His actual identity.

In the Ananta Samhita we find this very relevant statement regarding Sri Chaitanya's incarnation:

aprakashyam idam guhyam
na prakashyam bahir mukhe
bhaktavataram bhaktakhyam
bhaktam bhakti-pradam svayam

man-maya-mohitah kecin
na jnasyanti bahir-mukhah
jnasyanti mad-bhakti-yuktah
sadhavo nyasino 'malah

"Those who are bewildered by My illusory potency will not understand the great secret of My appearance in this world in My personal form, in My form as the incarnation of a devotee, in My form bearing the name of a devotee, in My form as a devotee, and in My form as the giver of devotional service. This secret is not to be revealed to them. Only the saintly, pure, renounced devotees, diligently engaged in My devotional service, will be able to understand Me in these forms."

Ekadasi Style Prasadam for Janmasthami and Gaura Purnima:

So we can understand from this there there are two separate instructions (i) for ekadasi (ii) for Gaura Purnima and Janmastami.

"you can offer ekadasi to Lord Caitanya who acts as a devotee, but not to Krsna."(Bhanu Swami. 5th March 1999. [Text 2136851 from COM] )

"So far the Advent Day of Lord Caitanya is concerned, I have written a full suggestion to Montreal, in which the main points are that we should all observe strict fasting up till moonrise, and at that time, an offering is made to Lord Caitanya of Ekadasi foods, fruits, peanuts, milk, and so forth. Then, on the next day, Friday the 15th, a full-scale feast is held to celebrate His Advent Day. On the 14th, chanting, reading of Srila Bhaktivinode's book, Life and Precepts and Caitanya Caritamrta, Introduction to Bhagavatam, may be held all the day in the Temple." (San Francisco, written 12th March 1968 letter to Balai)

"The injunction to fast on Ekädasi is especially meant for devotees; on Ekädasi there are no restrictions regarding food that may be offered to the Lord. Lord Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu took the food of Lord Vishnu in His ecstasy as vishnu-tattva".(CC Adi-lila 10:71 purport.)

"Lord Caitanya's Appearance day falls on March 22 (1970), that is on a Sunday. The devotees should fast until evening, when there is a ceremony and offering of a small amount of Ekadasi preparations. The next day, the devotees should celebrate amongst themselves with a small scale feast. You may hold the celebration open to the public on the following Sunday. The preparation to be offered specially on this occasion is bhuni kichri: Fry equal parts dal and rice in ghee and massala. Add two times water as dal and rice, and add vegetables (if you use more ghee, use less water). Cook it until it is dried and the rice is soft."(Letter to Krishna dasa. 18th February 1970. Los Angeles.)

"P.S. No feasting in the evening of Caitanya's birthday. Fasting all day till evening moon rise. Then take Prasadam like Ekadasi. Next day you can have full swing feasting. On the birthday if can take a procession of Kirtana on the street it is very nice." (Post Script to Letter to Rayarama dasa. September. Unknown place unknown date Ref:91-05-14.)

There is an amusing discription of the first ISKCON janmastami "feast" as described by Hayagriva Prabhu in his biography "Hare Krishna Explosion pg 62"  He writes:"as midnight approaches, we hungrily envision the great birthday feast of Lord Krishna, mountains of succulent prasadam: cake and kachoris, halava and puris, sabji, sweet rice, samosas and gulabjamuns. Just a few minutes before midnight, Swamiji finally descends from his kitchen with the Prasadam. But our faces drop. There is only a platter of cut fruit."

There is a discription of Gaura Purnima in Mayapur India 1976 from the biography "A Transcendental Diary" Vol1 Mar.16. by Hari Sauri Prabhu: pg.461. "GAURA PURNIMA. The Appearance day of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Everyone fasted until moon rise and then took an Ekadasi feast, although Prabhupada said this was not compulsory.

Pg.466: "Many Devotees sold copies of the Gitar-gana, and mass distribution of Halava prasadam went on throughout the day."

Pg.469 "At one point Prabhupada sent me out to see how many visitors had come , and he was very happy to hear of the large crowds. Typically, he wanted assurance that prasadam was being distributed to all."

"The Caitanya-bhägavata, Ädi-lilä, Chapter Six, fully describes the Lord’s accepting vishnu-prasäda on the Ekädasi day at the house of Jagadisha and Hiranya. Regular prasäda is offered to Lord Vishnu on Ekädasi because, while fasting is recommended for devotees on Ekädasi, it is not recommended for Lord Vishnu. Once on Ekädasi in the house of Jagadisha and Hiranya Pandita there were arrangements for preparing special prasäda for Lord Vishnu, and Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu asked His father to go there to ask for the vishnu-prasäda because He was feeling sick. The house of Jagadisha and Hiranya Pandita was situated about two miles from the house of Jagannätha Mishra. Therefore when Jagannätha Mishra, on the request of Shri Caitanya Mahäprabhu, came to ask Jagadisha and Hiranya for the prasäda, they were a little astonished. How could the boy understand that special prasäda was being prepared for Lord Vishnu? They immediately concluded that the boy Nimäi must have supernatural mystic power. Otherwise how could He understand that they were preparing special prasäda? Therefore they immediately sent the food to Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu through His father, Jagannätha Mishra. Nimäi was feeling sick, but immediately after eating the vishnu-prasäda He was cured, and He also distributed the prasäda among His playmates." (CC Adi-lila 14:39. purport)

The special Lila-vichitra pastimes of the Lord which are EXTRAORDINARY and not to be imitated.

If I may pose a question "If the Supreme Personality of Godhead came to you on ekadasi and gave you grains to eat what would you do???"

I for one would eat them right there on the spot, directly from the Lord's hand. Despite everything else, knowing who we are to take shelter of, just like His playmates did. (unfortunately it appears I will have to wait some time to test this case)

Adjusting the program for preaching (feasting):
"You can take quotations from the above mentioned books, and have discussions.
Fasting should be continued up to evening, then you may have food like on Ekadasi, fruits, milk, etc. On the next day you may observe festival. Janardana consulted me and said he thinks Sunday feasting would be best, so you may do that if you like. Or you may do both days, as you feel best."(Letter to Mahapurush. 7th March 1968. Regarding Gaura Purnima)

"We performed Lord Caitanya's Birthday ceremony, not very gorgeously, but amongst ourselves, and Govinda dasi cooked very nice Ekadasi foodstuffs. The next day I expected some big ceremony but it couldn't be performed. (Letter to Purusottam. 6th March 1969. Hawaii)

Fasting FOR EKADASI:
"From the very beginning of His childhood life Shri Caitanya Mahäprabhu introduced the system of observing a fast on the Ekädasi day. In the Bhakti-sandarbha, by Shrila Jiva Gosvämi, there is a quotation from the Skanda Puräna admonishing that a person who eats grains on Ekädasi becomes a murderer of his mother, father, brother and spiritual master, and even if he is elevated to a Vaikuntha planet, he falls down. On Ekädasi, everything is cooked for Vishnu, including regular grains and dahi, but it is enjoined that a Vaishnava should not even take vishnu-prasäda on Ekädasi. It is said that a Vaishnava does not accept anything eatable that is not offered to Lord Vishnu, but on Ekädasi a Vaishnava should not touch even mahä-prasäda offered to Vishnu, although such prasäda may be kept for being eaten the next day. It is strictly forbidden for one to accept any kind of grain on Ekädasi, even if it is offered to Lord Vishnu." ( CC Adi-lia 15:19. purport.)

"Mother Saci said, “You have spoken very nicely. I shall not eat grains on Ekädasi.” From that day, she began to observe fasting on Ekädasi."(CC Adi-lila 15:10 text.)
PURPORT
"It is a prejudice amongst smärta-brähmanas that a widow must observe fasting on Ekädasi but a woman who has her husband should not. It appears that before the request of Lord Caitanya Sacimätä was not observing Ekädasi because of her being sa-dhava, which means that her husband was living. Shri Caitanya Mahäprabhu, however, introduced the system that a woman, even if not a widow, must observe the Ekädasi day and must not touch any kind of grains, even those offered to the Deity of Vishnu".(CC Adi-lia 15:10 purport.)

"Shri Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s pastime of fainting after eating betel nuts is a solid instruction to all of us that one should not touch betel nuts, even those offered to Vishnu, just as one should not touch grains on the Ekädasi day. Of course, Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s fainting had a particular purpose. As the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He can do whatever He likes and eat whatever He wants, but we should not imitate His pastimes." (CC Adi-lia 15:16 purport.)

"Devotee: On ekädasi, we can offer the Deity grains?
Prabhupäda: Oh yes. But not guru. Ekädasi observed by jiva-tattva, not by Vishnu-tattva. We are fasting for clearing our material disease, but Rädhä-Krishna, Caitanya Mahäprabhu... Caitanya Mahäprabhu also may not be offered grains because He is playing the part of a devotee. Only Rädhä-Krishna, Jagannätha can be offered grains. Otherwise, Guru-Gauränga, no. And the prasädam should not be taken by anyone. It should be kept for next day." (Room Conversation. 22nd April 1972. Japan)

Prabhupäda: They are strictly following Vaishnava principles. They... Whenever one comes to become my disciple, the first condition is that no illicit sex; no meat-eating, eggs, fish, nothing of the sort; no intoxication up to smoking cigarette, drinking tea and coffee; and no gambling. So they strictly follow these things. In our society, there is no tea-drinking even. We don’t drink tea. So... Intoxication, päna, chäi päna, päna... Päna is intoxication.
Guest: Tämbüla...
Prabhupäda: Tämbüla. Yatra päpas catur-vidhä.
Guest: (Sanskrit or Hindi: Krshna is offered tämbüla in the temple.)
Prabhupäda: No, Krishna can take.
Guest: Yes. And that prasäda of Bhagavän Shri Krishna...
Prabhupäda: Yes.
Guest: ...the devotees can take also...
Prabhupäda: No, prasädam, according to our principle... Just like on Ekädasi day, we do not accept even prasädam. Anna. We keep it. So prasädam... Just like on Ekädasi anna is prohibited, but not the Deity. Deity’s offered anna, but we cannot take the prasädam even. So following strictly the principle, even tämbüla is offered to Krishna, it is not for us. Yes. Strictly following the principle. The same example... Just like on Ekädasi day, anna is offered to Krishna, but we don’t take.
Guest: The devotees are not allowed.
Prabhupäda: Not allowed, yes.
Guest: Äcchä.
Prabhupäda: Äcchä.

Lord Chaitanya's Mission

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu instructed His disciples to write books on the science of Krsna, a task which His followers have continued to carry out down to the present day. The elaborations and expositions on the philosophy taught by Lord Caitanya are, in fact, the most voluminous, exacting, and consistent, due to the system of disciplic succession. Although Lord Caitanya was widely renowned as a scholar in His youth, He left only eight verses, called Siksastaka. These eight verses clearly reveal His mission and precepts. These supremely valuable prayers are translated herein.

1.
Glory to the Sri Krsna sankirtana, which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years and extinguishes the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death. This sankirtana movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge. It increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious.

2.
O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names, like Krsna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them.

3.
One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.

4.
O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional service, birth after birth.

5.
O son of Maharaja Nanda [Krsna], I am Your eternal servitor, yet somehow or other I have fallen into the ocean of birth and death. Please pick me up from this ocean of death and place me as one of the atoms at Your lotus feet.

6.
O my Lord, when will my eyes be decorated with tears of love flowing constantly when I chant Your holy name? When will my voice choke up, and when will the hairs of my body stand on end at the recitation of Your name?

7.
O Govinda! Feeling Your separations I am considering a moment to be like twelve years or more. Tears are flowing from my eyes like torrents of rain, and I am feeling all vacant in the world in Your absence.

8.
I know no one but Krsna as my Lord, and He shall remain so even if He handles me roughly by His embrace or makes me brokenhearted by not being present before me. He is completely free to do anything and everything, for He is always my worshipful Lord, unconditionally.

Pleasing the Lord thru Reminiscence

From Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita of Krishna dasa kaviraj Goswami, translation by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

CC Madhya 9.285: Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu received word that Sri Ranga Puri, one of the disciples of Sri Madhavendra Puri, was present in that village at the home of a brahmana.

CC Madhya 9.286: Hearing this news, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately went to see Sri Ranga Puri at the brahmana's home. Upon entering, the Lord saw him sitting there.

CC Madhya 9.287: As soon as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw Sri Ranga Puri, He immediately offered him obeisances in ecstatic love, falling flat on the ground. The symptoms of transcendental transformation were visible -- namely, tears, jubilation, trembling and perspiration.

CC Madhya 9.288: Upon seeing Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in such an ecstatic mood, Sri Ranga Puri said, "Your Holiness, please get up.

CC Madhya 9.289: "Your Holiness is certainly related to Sri Madhavendra Puri, without whom there is no fragrance of ecstatic love."

CC Madhya 9.290: After saying this, Sri Ranga Puri lifted Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu up and embraced Him. As they embraced shoulder to shoulder, they both began to cry in ecstasy.

CC Madhya 9.291: After some moments, they came to their senses and became patient. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then informed Sri Ranga Puri about His relationship with Isvara Puri.

CC Madhya 9.292: They were both inundated by the wonderful ecstasy of love that was aroused in them. Finally they sat down and respectfully began to converse.

CC Madhya 9.293: In this way they discussed topics about Lord Krishna continually for five to seven days.

CC Madhya 9.294: Out of curiosity, Sri Ranga Puri asked Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu about His birthplace, and the Lord informed him that it was Navadvipa-dhama.

CC Madhya 9.295: Sri Ranga Puri had formerly gone to Navadvipa with Sri Madhavendra Puri, and he therefore remembered the incidents that had taken place there.

CC Madhya 9.296: As soon as Sri Ranga Puri recalled Navadvipa, he also recalled accompanying Sri Madhavendra Puri to the house of Jagannatha Misra, where Ranga Puri had taken lunch. He even remembered the taste of an unprecedented curry made of banana flowers.

CC Madhya 9.297: Sri Ranga Puri also remembered the wife of Jagannatha Misra. She was very devoted and chaste. As for her affection, she was exactly like the mother of the universe.

CC Madhya 9.298: He also remembered how Sri Jagannatha Misra's wife, Sacimata, was expert in cooking. He recalled that she was very affectionate toward the sannyasis and fed them exactly like her own sons.

CC Madhya 9.299: Sri Ranga Puri also remembered that one of her deserving sons had accepted the renounced order at a very young age. His name was Sankararanya.

CC Madhya 9.300: Sri Ranga Puri informed Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu that the sannyasi named Sankararanya had attained perfection in that holy place, Pandarapura.

CC Madhya 9.301: Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "In My previous asrama, Sankararanya was My brother and Jagannatha Misra was My father."

CC Madhya 9.302: After finishing his talks with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Ranga Puri started for Dvaraka-dhama.

CC Madhya 9.303: After Sri Ranga Puri departed for Dvaraka, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu remained with the brahmana at Pandarapura for four more days. He took His bath in the Bhima River and visited the temple of Viththala.

A Glimpse into the Life of Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati

Beginning in the year 1511 Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu made a pilgrim's journey of the holy places in South India, where He gave His mercy to the devotees there.  Starting from Jagannatha Puri, He first went to the Godavari River, and from there travelled to many holy places in what is now the state of Madras.  On Sukla Ekadasi of the month of Asadha, Sriman Mahaprabhu arrived at Sri Ranga-ksetra, where He decided to stay and practice austerities during the four months of Caturmasya.  In this way Lord Caitanya spent four months seeing the beautiful form of the Deity, Lord Ranganatha, and preaching the message of Sri Krsna.  At this time Lord Caitanya stayed at the home of three brothers, Tirumalaya, Vyenkata (whose son was Gopala Bhatta Gosvami), and Gopala Guru (Prabodhananda Sarasvati), who were Sri Vaisnavas, followers of Ramanujacarya, and devoted to the worship of Laksmi-Narayana.  Lord Caitanya explained the superiority of Lord Krsna's lila to His hosts, and their conversation on this point is recorded in Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila, Chapter Nine.  At this time Gopala Guru (Prabodhananda Sarasvati) became very devoted to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Vyenkata's son (Gopala Bhatta Gosvami) also became attached to the Lord.  In his youth, Gopala Bhatta was instructed by Prabodhananda Sarasvati.
 Prabodhananda Sarasvati became a follower of Sri Caitanya and is considered one of the great acaryas in the Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya.  Actually he is one the greatest eternal associates of the Lord.  When the Lord appeared in His original form of Sri Krsna, Prabodhananda Sarasvati was one of the important gopis.  This is recorded in Kavi Karnapura's Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (163):
 "The gopi Tungavidya, who appeared in Vrajabhumi during Lord Krsna's pastimes, also appeared during the pastimes of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.  At that time she appeared as Prabodhananda Svami, who became famous as Sarasvati because of his eloquent (sarasvati) glorification of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu."
 Prabodhananda Sarasvati is also mentioned in the introduction to Srila Sanatana Gosvami's Hari-bhakti-vilasa (1.2):
 "This book, Hari-bhakti-vilasa was originally compiled by Gopala Bhatta Gosvami, the disciple of Prabodhananda Sarasvati, who is very dear to Lord Krsna.  Gopala Bhatta brought great happiness to Srila Rupa Gosvami, Srila Sanatana Gosvami, and Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami."
 Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati is also described in Narahari Sarakara's Bhakti-ratnakara:
 "Prabodhananda Sarasvati was full of all good qualities, and therefore he was known everywhere by the name Sarasvati."
 "He was very devoted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna Caitanya, and he always remembered Him, even when he slept."
 "He was full of love for the devotees, and was also very austere and renounced.  His handsome form was very pleasing to see, and he was also a learned poet and scholar.  No one could compare with him in the arts of singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments."
 "Everyone who heard his eloquent speech became filled with happiness.  These are the incomparable glories of Prabodhananda Sarasvati."  After Lord Caitanya left South India and returned to Jagannatha Puri in Orissa, Prabodhananda Sarasvati became rapt in always remembering Him within his heart.  Prabodhananda left his home in Ranga-ksetra and travelled to Sri Vrndavana, where he stayed in the forest of Kamyavana, and where he was soon met by his nephew Gopala Bhatta Gosvami.

Chapter One
Stuti-mukhe vastu-nirdesa-rupa-mangalacaranam
In the Beginning an Invocation of Auspiciousness and a Description of the Contents of These Prayers.

1 Let us glorify the boundlessly merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead, the prince of Vraja.  To taste the intoxicating sweet waves of the nectar of transcendental love for Krsna, as well as to give that nectar to others, He has now appeared in the transcendental abode of Navadvipa as Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
2 One who is untouched by any piety, who is completely absorbed in irreligion, or who has never received the merciful glance of the devotees or been to any holy place sanctified by them will still ecstatically dance, loudly sing, and even roll about on the ground when he becomes intoxicated by tasting the nectar of the transcendental mellows of pure love of God given by Lord Caitanya.  Let me therefore glorify that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
3 Not attainable by the faithful performers of pious deeds, not understood by those engaged in austerity, meditation, and yoga, not guessed by those absorbed in detachment, renunciation or prayers, and unknown even to the devotees full of love for Lord Govinda, the secret of pure devotional service has been revealed by the holy name during Lord Gaura's advent.  Let me glorify that Lord Gaura.
4 Whether seen, touched, glorified, remembered, bowed down to from afar, or worshipped, Sri Caitanya gives the nectar of pure love of Krsna to His devotees.  Let me glorify Sri Caitanya, the merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead.
5 For those who have attained the merciful sidelong glance of Lord Gaura, impersonal liberation becomes as palatable as going to hell, the heavenly cities of the demigods become as real as flowers imagined to float in the sky, the poisonous fangs of the untameable black snakes of the senses become broken, the whole world becomes full of joy, and Brahma, Indra, and all the great demigods become like tiny insects.  Let us glorify that Lord Gaura.
6 When Lord Gauracandra's devotees, who are worshipped even by the demigods, drink the wonderfully sweet nectar of the bliss of pure love of God that flows from the lotus flower of Lord Gauracandra's feet, they become completely intoxicated.  In that condition they laugh at Lord Brahma and the other demigods, condemn the impersonalist yogis, and do not consider the great devotees of Lord Visnu who do not worship Lord Gauracandra to be very important.  Let us glorify that Lord Gauracandra.
7 What benefit did the world attain when Lord Rama, Lord Nrsimha, and many other incarnations of Godhead killed so many raksasa and daitya demons?  How important is it that Lord Kapila and other incarnations revealed the paths of sankhya and yoga?  How glorious is it that Lord Brahma and other guna-avataras create, maintain and destroy the material universes?  How auspicious is it that Lord Varaha lifted the earth from the Garbhodaka Ocean?  We do not consider any of these activities to be very important.  The most important thing is that Lord Caitanya has revealed the great splendour of pure love of Krsna.  Let us glorify that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.


Chapter Two
Namaskara-rupa-mangalacaranam
Auspicious Introduction in the Form of Offering Obeisances

8 Let me offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Caitanyacandra, whose face is as splendid as millions of moons and whose smile is as charming as moonlight.  He is like a moon that has just risen from the ocean of the bliss of pure love for Lord Krsna.
9 O Lord Caitanyacandra, by devotedly serving Your lotus feet one can attain the pure love for Lord Krsna that is the ultimate goal of all endeavours.  O Lord Caitanyacandra, O great auspiciousness of the world, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.  I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.
10 Moving His hands and feet, raising the two golden rods of His arms, trembling as He dances, and loudly calling out "Hari! Hari" in ecstatic bliss, Lord Caitanyacandra vanquishes the inauspiciousness of this world.  To that Lord Caitanyacandra, whose eyes are like two large lotus flowers, who is immersed in tasting the sweet nectar of pure love of Krsna, and who is the crest jewel of all incarnations, I offer my respectful obeisances.
11 O Lord Caitanyacandra, O Lord whose form is full of blissful pastimes, O Lord whose complexion is as splendid as gold, O Lord who gives in charity the nectar of pure love for Lord Krsna, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.  I offer my respectful obeisances unto You.
12 To Lord Hari, His eyes now like millions of rainclouds shedding torrents of tears, the opulence of pure love of Krsna making Him laugh at millions of Vaikuntha worlds, His charming handsomeness like millions of nectar oceans, and His role now that of a sannyasi, I offer my respectful obeisances.


Chapter Three
Asirvada-rupa-mangalacaranam
Auspicious Introduction Consisting of Benedictions

13 May Lord Caitanya, whose shoulders are like a lion's, whose smiling cheeks are the sweetest of all sweet things, whose body displays various wonderful symptoms of ecstatic love of Krsna, whose features are as splendid as the whorl of a blossoming golden lotus flower, and who is Sri Radha and Krsna joined in a single form, protect you all.
14 When He saw new rainclouds He was reminded of Lord Krsna, and became like a madman with love for Him.  When He saw a peacock feather He became agitated, and when he saw a gunja bracelet He trembled.  When He saw a dark-complexioned boy He thought He had just seen Lord Krsna, and He became filled with fear and wonder.  In this way golden Lord Hari preached the glories of pure devotional love for Himself.
15 Creating great tidal waves in the ocean of mercy, splendidly dressed in wonderful saffron garments as glorious as the sunrise, and glowing with the nectar of pure love of Krsna, may the wonderful and handsome moon of Lord Caitanya, which has risen from the milk ocean of Saci's womb, enter the sky of your heart.
16 Chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra, His own holy names which bring auspiciousness to the world, His hand trembling with love as He touches the knotted string about His waist to count the number of names, His face bathed in tears as He comes and goes, eager to see His own form of Lord Jagannatha, and bringing great delight to the eyes of all, may the golden form of Lord Hari protect you all.
17 Uprooting the dense darkness in the hearts of the entire world, making the nectar ocean of the bliss of pure love of Krsna overflow its shores without limit, and cooling this universe tormented by the threefold miseries, may the splendid moonlight of the moon of Lord Caitanyacandra eternally shine within your hearts.


Chapter Four
Sri Caitanya-bhakta-mahima
Glorification of Lord Caitanya's Devotees

18 The splendid path of pure devotional service, which bewildered the great sages in the past, which material intelligence has no power to enter, which Sukadeva Gosvami was not able to understand, and which merciful Lord Krsna never revealed to His closest friend, is the place where the dear devotees of Lord Gaura happily enjoy pastimes.
19 Talk of impersonal liberation will not become bitter, the shackles of blind adherence to social and Vedic convention will not become loosened, and the tumultuous debate of Vedic scholars on the merits of various useless spiritual  paths will continue as long as a devotee who is like a bumblebee drinking the nectar of Lord Caitanya's lotus feet does not appear before the eyes.
20 Where is renunciation?  Where is tranquil indifference to the temptations of sense pleasure or the torments of hell?  Where are great waves of humbleness?  Where is uncommon prowess?  Where is the path of intense devotion?  Where are these virtues present in the same way they are present in those who have made Lord Gaura the goal of their lives?
21 Even once seeing Lord Gaura's handsome face, which is overcome with feelings of love of Krsna, and which has blossoming lotus eyes filled with a great flood of tears, a person becomes maddened with newer and newer feelings of devotional love.  He never abandons the ocean of sweetness that is Lord Gaura's feet.
22 They who follow the rules of varnasrama-dharma, worship Lord Visnu, visit holy pilgrimage places, and study the Vedas, but do not serve the lotus feet of the dear devotees of Lord Gaura, cannot understand the transcendental abode of Vrndavana, which is beyond the reach of the four Vedas.
23 If by churning the shoreless ocean of nectar one attains the incomparably sweet essence of all nectar, that nectar will taste very bitter to those who touch the splendour of the lotus feet of Lord Krsna who now displays His transcendental form of Sri Gaurasundara.
24 Humbly thinking oneself lower than a blade of grass, natural gentleness and charm, speaking words as sweet as nectar, spitting at the insignificant sense gratification of this world, disinterest in the affairs of this world, and overwhelming love for Lord Hari are the transcendental virtues of the devotees of Lord Gaura.
25 Worship millions of the most exalted spiritual masters if you wish!  Study millions of Vedic literatures if you wish!  But know it is they who have attained the merciful sidelong glance of Lord Caitanya who will understand the great secret that is pure love for Lord Krsna.
26 Let renunciation be multiplied millions of times!  Let millions of virtues, beginning with peacefulness, sense control, tolerance and friendliness, be multiplied millions of times!  Let there be millions of meditations on the words tat tvam asi!  Let there be devotion to Lord Visnu multiplied millions of times!  All this taken together does not equal even a millionth part of the multitude of perfect transcendental qualities possessed by the great souls who find transcendental bliss in the splendour of the toenails of the dear devotees of Sriman Caitanyacandra.
27 Some dance so enthusiastically they seem to leap over the mountains and oceans, and others repeatedly revile Indra and the other demigods.  Who among the devotees headed by Advaitacandra is not now overwhelmed with bliss in the dancing festival of Lord Caitanya?
28 In this world there has not been, there will not be, and there is not now the touch of this kind of nectar from the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.  It is only by the great mercy of Lord Gaura, who enjoys transcendental pastimes, and by the power of devotional service to Him, that the non-envious devotees know anything about this nectar.
29 Lord Caitanya is worshipped by the Upanisads.  Lord Caitanya destroys the pride of the arrogant demigods and sages who do not worship His lotus feet.  Ah, what person is so fortunate that he has personally seen Lord Caitanya?
30 Even without following any religious rituals, one who wholeheartedly takes shelter of Lord Gauranga, the master of all transcendental opulences, will attain everything he might wish.


Chapter Five
Sri Caitanyabhakta-ninda
Criticism of Those who are not Devotees of Lord Caitanya

31 My mind thinks that a person who has countless pious credits and has completely taken shelter of Lord Hari, but does not worship Lord Caitanya, is very poor and unfortunate.
32 Pathetic are the followers of Vedic ritual! Pathetic are the practitioners of severe austerity! Pathetic are the dull-witted fools whose mouths have blossomed with the words "I am Brahman"! Why do we lament for these animals in the guise of men intoxicated by the taste of things other than Krsna?  Alas! They have not tasted even a drop of the nectar of Lord Gaura.
33 Watered with nectar a stone will never sprout a single blade of grass.  Carefully stretched out a dog's tail will never become straight.  A man may reach out his arms as much as he likes, but he will never grasp the moon.  A man may follow all the rituals of ordinary religion, but without the mercy of Lord Gaura he will never attain the festival of ecstatic love for Lord Krsna.
34 The advent of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is like an expanding ocean of nectar.  One who does not collect the valuable jewels within that ocean is certainly the poorest of the poor.
35 The golden moon of Lord Gauracandra now creates great tidal waves in the ocean of love for Lord Krsna.  They who will not dive into that ocean must find themselves diving instead into an ocean of unwanted deeds.
36 The golden moon of Lord Caitanyacandra now creates great tidal waves in the nectar ocean of pure love for Lord Krsna.  A person untouched by these waves is certainly the poorest of the poor.
37 Even though they be scholars learned in all the scriptures, those persons who will not accept that Lord Caitanya is the Supreme Personality of Godhead must continue to wander in this lifeless world of repeated birth and death.
38 Again and again He tastes the great sweetness of His own holy names.  Again and again He is overcome with ecstasy.  Again and again He says, "Sing! O sing the glories of the king of Vraja!"  They who have not seen Lord Gauracandra in this way find pure love for Lord Krsna very difficult to attain.
39 Why should grass not sprout without seeds?  Why should the blind not see?  Why should the lame not be able to leap over mountains if those persons who have no devotion for Lord Caitanya, the master of the wonderful unparalleled opulence of the nectar of pure love of Krsna, could somehow attain the bliss of that pure love?
40 A devotee of Lord Govinda whose mind is not rapt in meditation on Lord Gaura, the philanthropist who, by wonderfully preaching the glories of the sweet nectar of pure love of Krsna, gave in charity the wonderful bliss of pure love of Krsna, is a bewildered fool.  He is an animal in the guise of a man.
41 Although numberless incarnations of the Lord are described in the Sruti and other Vedic literatures, who, except for the Lord Himself, has the power to describe the glories and opulences of Lord Gaura?  How many times have the devotees not personally seen that their beloved Lord Gaura is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Hari?  Alas! alas! Still the fools refuse to believe that Lord Gaura is the Supreme!
42 If the people of this world say that because Lord Gaura, whose playful sidelong glance gives birth to the bliss of pure love of Krsna, which shows all living entities the worthlessness of material benefits and impersonal liberation, is not directly described in the four Vedas, he cannot be the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then alas! Alas! They are all atheists! O inscrutable illusory potency of Lord Visnu, O source of their bewilderment, I offer my respectful obeisances unto you.
43 Pathetic is his noble birth! Pathetic is his eloquence! Pathetic is his fame! Pathetic are his scholarship, wealth, and handsome young body!  Pathetic is his status as a brahmana! Pathetic is his observance of varnasrama-dharma! Pathetic is he who in the age of Kali does  not worship the golden form of Lord Gopinatha!
44 When they see Vakresvara Pandita and the other devotees of Lord Gaura overwhelmed by continually tasting the very wonderful and splendid nectar of pure love for Lord Krsna, the Lord's exalted associates in Vaikuntha become filled with wonder, and the hairs on their bodies stand erect.  Without performing many pious deeds how can one become a devotee of Lord Gaura?
45 Lord Hari brought the full nectar of pure devotional service to this world.  He gave His mercy to the living entities.  He spoke with them, showed them His handsome smiling face, affectionately glanced at them from afar, and gave them a great festival of pure love of God.  They who, despite having received so many gifts from Him, still refuse to worship Him, must be considered to be foolish, cruel-minded demons.


Chapter Six
Dainya-rupa-sva-ninda
The author Criticises Himself for His Wretched Condition

46 I am cheated! I am cheated! I am cheated!  Of this there is no doubt.  Although Lord Gaura has plunged the entire world in a flood of love of Krsna, I have not been touched by even a single drop!
47 Now that the pollen of Lord Gaura's lotus feet has touched this earth, who, even without trying for it, has not attained the pure love of Krsna that is the crest jewel of all human endeavour? Alas! Alas! Because of my great misfortune, only I have not attained even the slightest trace of the fragrance of that love.  Because of this calamity I say, "To hell with my worthless life! To hell with my erudition! To hell with my high place in varnasrama society!"
48 Although the rising ocean of Lord Gauracandra's mercy has flooded the entire world, I am so unfortunate that not even a single drop has fallen upon me.  How has this amazing calamity happened?
49 Now it is the age of Kali.  My enemies, the senses, have become very strong.  The splendid path of pure devotional service is blocked by millions of brambles.  I am weak and agitated.  Alas! Alas! Where can I go?  O Lord Caitanyacandra, if now You will not give me Your mercy, what can I do?
50 Because the wonderful Lord never came before my eyes, and because I never tasted the transcendental nectar of service to His lotus feet, I simply pray to attain the jubilant festival of the association of those great souls now decorating this world, whose hearts are fixed at Lord Caitanya's lotus feet.
51 I am tightly bound by the chains of limitless horrible desires.  I am addicted to millions of sins.  My mind is filled with pain.  Millions of wicked men mislead me.  They are not my friends.  Except for Lord Gaura, who is my friend in this world?
52 Alas! Alas! Alas! Millions of the seeds of material pious deeds fail to sprout when I try to plant them in the desert of my heart.  I shall give up trying to plant them, and with all my heart I shall take shelter of Lord Gauracandra's feet, which bear the wonderful seed of pure devotional service.
53 Alas! Alas! How will the desire creeper of pure devotional service sprout in the desert of my heart?  In my heart there is only one hope.  I shall call out the name of Lord Caitanya.  Then I shall never again lament.
54 I am chained by sinful desires.  I have fallen into the painful ocean of repeated birth and death.  The sharks and crocodiles of lust and anger are devouring me alive.  I have no shelter.  O Lord Caitanyacandra, please rescue me.  Please give me the shelter of Your feet.
55 O Lord Caitanyacandra, if You place Your merciful glance on me, then even though I am a great fool, the wonderful path of pure devotion, which is sought by Siva, Sukadeva, Uddhava, Narada, and other great souls, will not be far away.
56 Where is causeless mercy?  Where is wonderful transcendental opulence?  Where is love for the devotees?  O Lord Krsna, where are these virtues present in the same way they are present in Your feature as Lord Gaura?

The Firm Conviction that Lord Caitanya is the Worshipable Supreme Personality of Godhead

57 O foolish mind, please take shelter of Lord Gauranga, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is hidden from the view of the Vedas, and who with His own transcendental potency plunged the entire world into the great nectar ocean of love for the lotus feet of Lord Krsna.
58 If someone can attain the supreme goal of life by devotedly hearing about, meditating upon, or glorifying Lord Murari, then that is very good for him.  Let him do it.  For myself, however, I shall only worship the hidden sweetness that fills the great shoreless nectar ocean of pure love of Krsna that flows from Lord Gauranga.
59 Some may worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead with the hope to attain the four goals of life (material piety, sense gratification, economic development and liberation).  Others may reject all other objects of worship and simply become the servants of Lord Krsna.  For myself, my mind is greedy to attain the great secret of pure love of Krsna, and for this reason I take shelter of the feet of Lord Caitanyacandra.
60 My faith in Vedic and ordinary duties, my embarrassment to sing, dance, and laugh, and my natural tendency to be absorbed in material activities, have all been stolen away by a very powerful golden-complexioned thief.
61 Who is this divine person showering millions of nectar oceans of intensely blissful, splendid, and sweet pure love of Krsna from the corners of His eyes, glistening with mercy?  Who is this person whose fair-complexioned form is as splendid as a golden young plantain tree?  Who is this person who has suddenly made my heart become so ardently devoted to His feet?
62 His complexion as fair as molten gold, and His form filled with the splendid and blissful nectar of pure transcendental love, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has mercifully appeared in the town of Navadvipa. In Navadvipa every home celebrates great festivals in honour of Bhakti-devi, the goddess of devotion.  Navadvipa is sweeter than Vaikuntha.  My heart finds its happiness in the transcendental abode of Navadvipa.
63 Let the Vedic scriptures say whatever they like! Let the learned logicians comment as they like!  Whatever they say, the nectar of Lord Caitanya's lotus feet shall always remain my life and soul.
64 If the rare mystic perfections were to fall into my hand, if the demigods approached to become my servants, and if my form became the four-armed form of a resident of Vaikuntha, my mind would still not swerve from Lord Gauracandra for even a moment.
65 Let me live in a terrible cage of fire! I shall never associate with those averse to Lord Caitanya's lotus feet!  My heart has no desire to go to Vaikuntha or any other auspicious place if for a single moment I could not taste the pollen of the lotus flower of Lord Caitanya's feet.
66 I may become famous in this world, or I may attain wonderful mystic powers, or by worshipping Lord Visnu I may attain a handsome four-armed spiritual form like His.  Still, if these things separated me from devotional service to Lord Gaura, my heart would not love them.
67 O Lord Caitanya, O merciful one, O supremely generous one, O Lord who fills the hearts of the living entities with the different mellows of devotional love, O wonderfully splendid Lord, O golden-complexioned Lord, O ocean of transcendental virtues, O personified nectar of devotional service, O Lord who is fond of chanting His own holy names, I pray that without ever becoming fatigued I may pass my life always chanting Your holy names in this way.
68 O Lord Krsna, Your golden form is the life of the devotees.  It is the philanthropist that gives in charity the nectar of pure love of God.  When shall I whole-heartedly love this golden form?  When, because I have finally understood the secret of this golden form, will the splendour of Srimati Radharani's jewel toenails shine in my heart?
69 I meditate on the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who bears the name Caitanya.  He wears a garland of fully blossomed damanaka flowers.  He pleases everyone.  He enjoys pastimes in a secluded garden.  He continually chants the holy names of Lord Krsna.  He is the abode of compassion.  His fair complexion is as effulgent as gold.
70 I pray that my mind may always remember Lord Gauranga, the sannyasi whose eyes are like two bumblebees drawn to the glistening lotus flower of Lord Jagannatha's face in the festive city of Nilacala, who is tossed by great waves of ecstatic love of God, and who is the same Lord Krsna who appeared like Cupid to the doe-eyed girls of Vraja.
71 I take shelter of Lord Gaura Hari, who has accepted the saffron garment of a sannyasi, whose bodily hairs stand up in ecstasy, and whose handsome form is decorated with pearl-like tears flowing from His lotus eyes.
72 When will Lord Gaura Hari, who is more handsome than Cupid, more purifying than the celestial Ganges, more cooling than the moon, more sweet than madhvika nectar, more generous than the desire creeper, and more affectionate than a mother, appear in my meditation, and lovingly place His lotus feet in my heart?
73 I pray that the merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose complexion eclipses the splendour of millions of lightning flashes, whose hips are covered with a charming manjistha flower coloured saffron cloth, and who delights this universe by again and again flooding it with the sweetest nectar of pure love of Krsna, may become very dear to me.
74 Will Lord Gaura, whose splendour condemns millions and millions of Cupids, whose handsome face eclipses millions and millions of rising autumn moons, and whose generosity makes millions and millions of desire trees seem insignificant, place His lotus feet in my heart after I have accumulated pious deeds in millions and millions of births?
75 I pray that the splendid moonlight of Lord Caitanyacandra, which violently uproots the darkness in the hearts of the entire world, which brings limitless tidal waves to the nectar ocean of the bliss of pure love of Krsna, and which brings coolness to the universe burning day and night in the threefold miseries of material existence, may shine in our hearts.
76 Plunged into Radha's lamentation in separation from Krsna, at one moment He would become emaciated and devastated.  Thinking that Lord Krsna had appeared before Him, at another moment He would become chubby with happiness, at another moment shed tears of joy, at another moment smile, and at another moment become very cool.  Burning in the fire of separation from Lord Krsna, at another moment He would become feverish.  Thinking that He saw Lord Krsna in the distance, at another moment he would run after Him.  Considering that he had just touched Krsna, He would become stunned with bliss.  At one moment He would talk as if Krsna were present, and at another moment He would become silent.  I pray that Lord Gaura, the golden form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, may appear in my heart.
77 He does not consider whether a person is qualified or not.  He does not see who is His own and who is an outsider.  He does not consider who should receive and who not.  He does not consider whether it is the proper time.  The Lord at once gives that nectar of pure devotional service that is difficult to attain even by hearing the message of the Lord, seeing the Deity, offering obeisances, meditating, or following a host of spiritual practices.  That Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Gaurahari, is my only shelter.
78 Even the greatest sinners, even the lowest of men, even men of the basest character, even those in the vanguard of sinful acts, even the dog eaters, even those whose hearts are filled with sinful desires, even those born or residing in sinful countries, and even those destroyed by bad company have all been rescued by the mercy of Lord Gaura.  Let me take shelter of Lord Gaura.
79 Leaving the charming forest on the bank of the Yamuna and entering a flower garden by the shore of the salt-water ocean, rejecting His yellow garment and accepting a saffron cloth, Lord Hari has now concealed His own bodily lustre and manifests a golden complexion.  Let me take shelter of that golden Lord Hari.


Chapter Eight
Loka-siksa
Instruction to the People

80 O foolish people, please seek the path of pure hari-bhakti, which even the great sages in ancient times could not find after long searching.  If in your heart there is no faith, and if you think it is too difficult to attain, then please abandon all these misconceptions and take shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Gaura.
81 He places His budding lotus hands above His head.  His soft cheeks are bathed in tears from His eyes.  He is dressed in garments the colour of a newly blossomed lotus whorl, and His complexion robs gold of its splendour.  Please offer your respectful obeisances to Lord Gaura.
82 O brother, even if you chant the wonderfully powerful holy names of Lord Krsna, and even if you meditate on His brilliant and charming transcendental form, which creates auspiciousness for the entire world, you still cannot hope to attain the splendid nectar of pure love of Krsna if the merciful glance of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu does not fall upon you.
83 O brother, please do not act in this reckless way.  Because you have not taken shelter of Lord Gauranga's lotus feet, the devotees who have become intoxicated by drinking the nectar of the mellows of pure devotional service to Lord Krsna are everywhere laughing at all your endeavours.  O brother, please listen to this secret: Lord Gauranga is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and He is the object of the pure love of God described in all Vedic scriptures.
84 "I have no power to understand the path of Krsna-bhakti, which makes one averse to impersonal speculation and non devotional yoga, and I have no contact with saintly spiritual masters.  Alas! Alas! Alas! Of whom can I take shelter."
 "O fool, has the name Gaura Hari never entered your ears?"
85 Give up all useless material duties!  Do not allow a single word of the impersonalist theory to enter your ears! Give up all illusions about your material body and the family and paraphernalia in relation to it.  Taking shelter of the mercy of Lord Gaura, please attain the very wonderful and sweet crest-jewel of all human endeavours.
86 What is the use of studying many scriptures?  What is the use of going on pilgrimage to holy places.  Fear women who are like tigers!  Spit on the opulences of Svargaloka!  Know that all material benefits are as worthless as a handful of straw! Instead of chasing after them please take shelter of Lord Gauranga, who is dressed in the garments of a sannyasi, and who, intoxicated by tasting the nectar of krsna-prema, dances by the shore of the sea.
87 What good will come from practising the difficult yoga paths?  Give them up! Instead, please plunder the treasure house of pure love for the lotus feet of Lord Krsna.  If you aspire to attain the wonderful festival of pure love for Lord Krsna, which even Siva, Brahma, and all the demigods cannot attain, then please become devoted to the inconceivably glorious and magnanimous Lord Gaura.
88 When a pious person attains devotion to the lotus feet of Lord Gaura, the ocean of nectar from the lotus feet of Srimati Radharani suddenly floods his heart.
89 Within Lord Caitanya's lotus feet, which are worshipped by Brahma and Siva, the shoreless nectar ocean of the confidential mellows of splendid pure love of Krsna rests.  The saintly devotees should always meditate on these feet, take shelter of them, become intoxicated with love for them, and chant their glories.
90 I take a straw in my mouth.  I fall down at your feet and flatter you.  O sir, you are such a great and intelligent man.  There is no one greater than you.  You are so intelligent, rich, and beautiful.  You may ask, "Why are you so humble?  Why are you flattering me?  What is your intention?  Tell me."  O you are a great sadhu.  You have learned so many nice things, I know, but kick them out, please.  Whatever nonsense rascaldom you have learned, whatever hogwash things are in your brain, kick them all out.  Throw them all far away and place all your love in the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga.
91 Liberation is not difficult to attain, and devotional service to Lord Krsna is not very difficult to attain, but even in Vaikunthaloka the mercy of Lord Gauracandra is very rare and difficult to attain.
92 May the devotees worship the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya.  May they become filled with the nectar of pure devotional service.  May they delight and astonish the three worlds with their charming sweetness, good fortune, compassion, tolerance, and other virtues.
93 If one's heart is set on crossing beyond the ocean of repeated birth and death, if one's heart relishes the sweet nectar of krsna-sankirtana, and if one's heart yearns to swim and sport in the ocean of pure love of Krsna, then one should take shelter of Lord Gauracandra's feet.
94 Where are knowledge, renunciation, devotion and other virtues equal to those that are the property of the devotees of Lord Caitanya's lotus feet?
95 If this dull and lifeless world does not worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Caitanya, who is worshipped by the greatest demigods, then it will find death and rebirth staring at it from every turn.
96 King Indra is like a menial servant to one who yearns to attain the feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.  What shall we say, then, about the tiny, insectlike kings of this world?
97 Why should a devotee who aspires to attain the service of Lord Krsna Caitanya beg at the door of a king?  Who would be such a fool that even after attaining a priceless cintamani jewel, he would travel a great distance with much more trouble to get a silver trinket?
98 Many may remain in the mountains absorbed in meditation on impersonal Brahman, many may diligently follow the regimen of yoga and attain many mystic powers, and many others, intoxicated by learning, heroic strength, wealth, and the other false opulences of this world, may speak much nonsense, but who in this world will dance, mad with ecstasy of pure love of Krsna, if he has not received the mercy of Lord Gaura?
99 If the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Gaura, is merciful to me, and for this reason I consider the impersonalists of Varanasi to be very unimportant, then why should I go on a pilgrimage to Gaya to offer pinda to the ancestors?  If Lord Gaura is merciful and my personal liberation does not weigh even as heavily as a fraction of any ounce to me, then why should I become interested in material piety, economic development, and sense gratification?  If Lord Gaura is merciful and I have not even the slightest fear of hell, then why should I be filled with anxiety over the well-being of my wife, children, friends and relatives?


Chapter Nine
Sri Caitanyotkarsata
The Exalted Position of Lord Caitanya

100 All glories to Lord Gauracandrama.  He is as powerful as a maddened young lion and as handsome and splendid as a golden young plantain.  He flooded this world with the ocean of pure love for Lord Krsna.
101 All glories to Lord Gaura, who is more handsome than millions of Cupids, more pleasing to the people than millions of moons, more affectionate than millions of mothers, more generous than millions of celestial desire trees, more profound than millions of oceans, sweeter than millions of sudha, ksira, and madhvika nectars, and filled with millions of wonderful sentiments of the nectar of pure love for Lord Krsna.
102 All glories to Lord Gaura, who became like a madman, displaying His wonderful transcendental opulences in the company of Brahma, Siva, and the other dancing devotees who were plunged into the waves of love for His lotus feet.
103 All glories to Lord Sri Sri Sacinandana! His deep voice is like the roaring of millions of suns.  He is more cooling than millions of moons.  His motions defeat the gracefulness of millions of maddened elephants.  His holy name rescues millions of misguided people.  He is the master of Brahma and millions of demigods.  Because He is the origin of the impersonal Brahman He is the splendid crest-jewel worshipped by millions of monists.
104 All glories to the splendid lamp of Navadvipa, which, shining with the oil of transcendental love destroys the darkness in the cave of the heart and illuminates the barren, thorn filled, impassable and treacherously winding path that leads to the swiftly flowing nectar stream of the bliss of pure love of Krsna.
105 Burning the moths of false logic from far away, as cooling as millions of moons, shining  with transcendental sweetness, removing the darkness in both the outside world and the heart, and its wick splendid with the oil of love, the splendid, golden, and wonderful lamp of Navadvipa mercifully shines in this world at every moment.
106 Filling the ten directions with His loud calls, placing white kunda and kairava flowers in the skies with the splendid waves of His loud laughter, overwhelmed by the flood of the nectar of pure love of Krsna, and all His limbs trembling like a banyan tree moving in the wind, Lord Gaurahari appears very splendid as He dances like a madman.
107 Gracefully dancing, spotless, free from all impurities and crookedness, showering the nectar of pure love of Krsna which extinguishes the threefold sufferings of all living entities, its splendid effulgence tasted by the cakora birds of the devotees' hearts, and now risen from the milk ocean of Saci's womb, the moon of Lord Gaurangacandra splendidly shines in this world.
108 Again and again shedding tears that glide down the corners of His pale cheeks, again and again emitting long sighs, and plaintively calling out, "Alas! Alas!" a fair complexioned person is now plunged in the vraja-gopis' feelings of love in separation from Lord Krsna.
109 Sometimes His form is the colour of molten gold, sometimes He becomes a splendid cowherd boy, sometimes He manifests various wonderful pastimes, and sometimes Lord Gaurangacandra becomes Sri Sri Radha and Krsna.


Chapter Ten
Avatara-mahima
Glorification of Lord Caitanya's Incarnation

110 Now that Lord Gaura has descended to this world, the waves of the holy names of Lord Krsna are suddenly flooding this planet, and the hearts of the sinful conditioned souls, which were as hard as thunderbolts, have now become as soft as butter.  Let me take shelter of that Lord Gaura.
111 Now that Lord Caitanya, His heart filled with mercy, has descended to this world, those living entities who had formerly never practised yoga, meditated, chanted mantras, performed austerities, followed various Vedic restrictions, studied the Vedas, performed spiritual activities, or refrained from sins, have become able to easily plunder the crest jewel of all goals of life.
112 Now that wonderfully powerful Lord Caitanya has descended to this world, the materialists, who had fallen into the raging river of fruitive deeds, have been rescued and are situated on the firm ground, even the great boulders have melted, and even those whose hearts were fixed in non-devotional yoga are dancing in the ecstasy of love of Krsna.
113 Now that the moon of Lord Caitanyacandra has revealed the path of pure devotional service, the materialists have given up talking about their wives, children, and material affairs, the scholars have given up debating the scriptures, the yogis have given up the trouble to control the breath, the ascetics have given up their austerity, and the impersonalists have given up impersonalism.  Now there is only the sweetness of pure devotional service.  Now nothing else is sweet.
114 In every home there is a tumult of hari-sankirtana.  On every body are tears, hairs standing erect, and other symptoms of ecstasy.  In every heart is the most exalted and sweet spiritual path that leads far from the path of the four Vedas.  All this has appeared now that Lord Gaura has descended to this world.
115 The whole world is now suddenly flooded by the nectar waters of the ocean of pure love for Krsna.  Now there is suddenly a great wonder of symptoms of ecstatic love never seen or heard of before.  All this has suddenly appeared now that Lord Krsna has descended in a form as splendid as gold.
116 In the past many scholars became extremely proud, thinking themselves the omniscient masters of all scripture, and many others thought they had become perfect by performing austerities or fruitive work.  Sometimes, with an impure heart, someone would twice or thrice chant the holy names of Lord Hari.  That was the past.  Now that the moon of Lord Gauracandra has risen, everyone has attained pure love for Lord Krsna.
117 Now that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose lotus feet the demigods aspire to serve, and who bears the name Caitanya, has descended to this world, the very sweet nectar waves of pure love for Krsna are flooding the entire world.  Who is a child now?  Who is an old man?  Who is a fool?  Who is a woman?  Who is fallen and unfortunate?  Everyone has attained the same destiny.  Everyone has attained the same sweet nectar continually tasted by those devoted to Lord Hari's feet.
118 Now that Lord Gauracandra, the master of the nectar mellows of transcendental love, has descended to this earth, Siva, Narada, all the demigods, Laksmi-devi, Lord Balarama, the Vrsni dynasty, and the gopas and gopis of Vraja have all taken birth here.
119 Now that the golden complexioned Lord is distributing pure love of Krsna in this world, His servants, friends, and charming gopi lovers have all come to His lotus feet.  They have now attained a priceless treasure of pure love of Krsna more valuable than anything they had possessed before.
120 Everywhere saintly men and women are laughing, the stonelike hearts of the materialists are melting, and the unlettered are eclipsing a host of learned atheist scholars.  This is happening now that the most wonderful and  glorious Sri Caitanya has descended to this earth.
121 Formerly the intelligence of even the greatest scholars was blunted and crippled.  but now that Lord Caitanyacandra has mercifully descended to this world, who has not attained the most deep, exalted, splendid and sweet devotion to Lord Krsna?
122 Because they are very difficult to understand, Sukadeva Gosvami had only briefly hinted at the sweet amorous pastimes of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna in his description of the rasa dance in Srimad Bhagavatam.  Now Lord Hari has descended to this world in a golden form to reveal the truth of these pastimes.
123 Some, headed by Uddhava, have attained the Lord's service, others have attained a glorious position like that of Sridama, others have become lotus-eyed girls in Vraja, and other very fortunate and intelligent persons have attained the lotus feet of Sri Radha.  By the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, what great good fortune has this world not attained?
124 In the past when even the greatest philosophers presented a host of arguments to support their mutually conflicting views, no one could be certain that any one view was correct.  But now that the unlimitedly splendid and powerful moon of Lord Gaurangacandra has risen, who is not certain that pure devotion to Lord Hari is the ultimate meaning and purpose of the Vedas?
125 Let me meditate on the wonderful splendour of the candramani jewels of Lord Gaurangacandra's toenails.  That splendour is now drowning the entire universe in the sweet nectar ocean of pure love of Krsna.
126 Although in the past many very pious and religious persons attained the great success of entering Vaikunthaloka, until the advent of Lord Caitanyacandra the world had never been flooded in this way with pure love of Krsna.
127 Even though a person may faithfully perform pious acts or render incomparable service to Lord Visnu, his heart may still remain as hard as iron.  Still, by Lord Gauranga's mercy, even a person more sinful than a cow-killer may flood the universe with a stream of tears of pure love for Lord Krsna.  Oh, when this happens, who can measure the intense happiness felt by golden Lord Gauranga?
128 Sometimes, assuming the role of Lord Krsna, He dances with many graceful motions.  Sometimes, filled with Radha's love, He calls out: "Alas! Alas! Alas!" Sometimes He becomes like a crawling infant, and sometimes he becomes like a cowherd boy.  In this way the profoundly glorious Lord Gaura astonishes the entire world.
129 A form of molten gold delights my heart.  On the shore of the salt-water ocean that golden form plunges the entire world into the very sweet pastimes of Lord Krsna, who is the nectar ocean of love for the young gopis.  Even in His childhood pastimes that golden form enchants the entire world.
130 On the pathways of whose ear had the wonderful words "pure love of Krsna" entered? Who had known the glories of the holy names?  Who had entered the great sweetnesses of the forest of Vrndavana?  Who had understood Sri Radha, who is filled with the most wonderful sweetness of the nectar of pure love for Krsna?  It is only Lord Caitanyacandra who has mercifully revealed all this.


Chapter Eleven
Sri Gaura-rupollasa-nrtyadi
Lord Caitanya's Splendid Transcendental Form and Ecstatic Dancing

131 Glorified by Siva, Brahma, Vyasa and all the other demigods and sages, filling the universe with millions of golden rays of light from His transcendental limbs tossed about in the waves of the nectar ocean of pure love of Krsna, and displaying a form that enchants the entire world and cannot be understood even by millions of Vedic literatures, the wonderful Supreme Personality of Godhead now dances on the shore of the salt-water ocean.
132 Who is the golden-complexioned person wearing a loincloth on His hips, bracelets on His wrists, a necklace about His chest, earrings on His ears, bells on His ankles, and a garland of jasmine flowers in His bound-up hair, and who enjoys many transcendental pastimes, chanting His own holy names and dancing?
133 The demigods sounded dundubhi drums, the Gandharvas and the Siddhas covered the earth with a continual shower of flowers, and the sages affectionately recited eloquent prayers as Lord Gauracandra, maddened with pure love of Krsna, enthusiastically danced in this world.
134 One moment He laughs.  The next moment He cries.  The next moment He faints.  The next moment He rolls about on the ground.  The next moment He runs.  The next moment He dances.  The next moment He sighs.  The next moment He loudly calls out, "Alas! Alas!"  In this way, plunged in the nectar ocean of ecstatic love for Lord Krsna, golden complexioned Lord Hari enjoys transcendental pastimes.
135 Staying by the shore of the salt-water ocean, muddying the ground with streams of tears, placing His cheeks, as white as vadara berries, in His hands, dressed in wonderful saffron garments, and His complexion now golden, Lord Hari now displays His pure love for Sri Radha's lotus feet.
136 Who is this divine person filling the directions with the sound of His feet, muddying the ground with His tears, and whitening the sky with His loud laughter, His handsome broad hips covered with a saffron garment, and His form as splendid as the moon, jubilantly dancing in a flower garden by the shore of the salt-water ocean?


Chapter Twelve
Socaka
A Lament

137 Will Lord Caitanyacandra, whose transcendental form was never described by the Upanisads, the crest jewels of the Vedas, whose very sweet path could not be approached by Siva, Brahma, Laksmi, or the other demigods, and who intoxicated the world with the nectar of love for Lord Hari, come within the range of my words or thoughts?
138 Somewhere people are indifferent to material activities, somewhere people chant mantras and practice austerities and yoga, somewhere people are engaged in devotional service mixed with jnana and somewhere the splendid path of pure devotional service is present in name only.  O Lord Caitanya, where have You gone?  I do not anywhere see the path of pure devotional service.
139 When golden Lord Hari appeared in this world, His glory flooded the world with the nectar of pure love of Krsna, and there was tumultuous chanting of the holy names of Lord Hari.  Oh, will that sweet time ever come again?
140 The fortunate town of Navadvipa remains on the earth.  The seashore remains.  The city of Jagannatha Puri remains.  The holy names of Lord Krsna remain.  Alas! Alas! I do not see anywhere the same kind of festival of pure love for Lord Hari.  O Lord Caitanya, O ocean of mercy, will I ever see Your transcendental glory again?
141 If someone says that Lord Caitanya is an amsa-avatara like Lord Matsya, or if not that, then a lila-avatara or a saktyavesa-avatara, then he does not understand the actual glory of Lord Caitanya, the Original Personality of Godhead, who is full of all perfect and incomparable potencies and wonderful pastimes.
142 The transcendental opulence of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu astonishes Brahma, Siva, and all the demigods.  I pray that when Lord Caitanya hears the words of this foolish child He will become kind to me.
143 I have not learned from many saintly spiritual masters, and I have not carefully studied the scriptures with many learned scholars.  Although I speak like a child, I pray that Lord Gaurahari will still be pleased with me.
