TRANSLATION
Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such a birth is rare in this world.

PURPORT by HDG Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad:

Birth in a family of yogis or transcendentalists--those with great wisdom--is praised herein because the child born in such a family receives a spiritual impetus from the very beginning of his life. It is especially the case in the acarya or gosvami families. Such families are very learned and devoted by tradition and training, and thus they become spiritual masters. In India there are many such acarya families, but they have now degenerated due to insufficient education and training. By the grace of the Lord, there are still families that foster transcendentalists generation after generation. It is certainly very fortunate to take birth in such families. Fortunately, both our spiritual master, Om Visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja, and our humble self had the opportunity to take birth in such families, by the grace of the Lord, and both of us were trained in the devotional service of the Lord from the very beginning of our lives. Later on we met by the order of the transcendental system.

Prabhupada Uvacha:
(here's some nectar, sometimes it comes in the form of Srutakirti prabhu's diary, other times from Govinda dasi's diary, Hari Sauri prabhu's Transcendental Diary, Bhurijan prabhu's book, or sometimes from a letter, or other related source, but still nectar...)

Real Richness

Prabhupada had requested a repeat showing of Yadubara's film on New Vrindaban, Spiritual Frontier, and he ended the darsana earlier than usual so that he could see it. He enjoyed it all over again. On our way here to New Vrindaban he had told Kirtanananda Maharaja he felt they should have included more information about New Vrindaban's milk preparations in the film, but on second viewing he decided that it was all right.

When it was over he told Kirtanananda, "In nutshell everything is there. Our agriculture, our temple, and food growing, and everything is there. Radha-Krsna worship. The sum and substance, everything ... And you are living practically for the last ... Eight years? Here? You have no difficulty. You are happy more and more. Immense land. You can come, hundreds. We can provide. There is food. There is shelter."

Kirtanananda Maharaja said that ordinary people think that by protecting the cow it will not be economic, that they would lose. "But actually we have proof," he told Srila Prabhupada, "the more we protect cows, the more we gain in opulence."

Srila Prabhupada heartily agreed. "Yes. If you have got grain, then you are rich. And if you have got cows, then you are rich. This is the standard of Vedic richness. Dhanyena dhanavan gavyena dhanavan. They don't say, 'Keep some papers and you become rich.' All rascal, one thousand dollar I promise to pay, a piece of paper. Practical -- we have got enough food grains. We have got enough milk. That is richness. What is use of paper? Even gold you have got, you have to exchange.

"If you have grain, immediate food. Just boil with milk, and it is nectarean, paramanna, immediately. Take some wood collected from the woods and have fire, put the milk and the grains -- oh, you'll get so nice food, nutritious, full of vitamin, and so easily made. It is practical. So tasteful. ... If you simply boil little milk and little grain, whole day, so much sweet rice, you take -- bas. You don't require any more. And if you add little apples and fruits, oh, it is heavenly! Your whole day free from any food anxiety, and you can work. You can chant Hare Krsna. Make this ideal life here. America has got good potency. We have got so much land here. We can have hundreds of New Vrindabans or farms like that. And people will be happy. And invite all the world, 'Please come and live with us. Why you are suffering congestion, overpopulation? Welcome here. Chant Hare Krsna.' Make that.

"Indian culture and American strength make the whole world happy. That logic I have given? India could not improve on account of poverty, lame. And America? Blind for want of culture. So let the blind man carry the lame man on the head, and the lame man give direction that 'Go this way,' and he walks. So both men's work is done. There is no hampering because one is blind and one is lame. Combined together, they get the benefit. Andha-pangor nyaya. Do it very sincerely. Don't spoil life. Be very sober and do this work. Whole world will be happy. After all, they are seeking after happiness. So there is happiness here."

Devotee: (leads chanting, etc.)

kamam vavarsa parjanyah
sarva-kama-dugha mahi
sisicuh sma vrajan gavah
payasodhasvatir muda
 [SB 1.10.4]

"During the reign of Maharaja Yudhisthira, the clouds showered all the water that people needed, and the earth produced all the necessities of man in profusion. Due to its fatty milk bag and cheerful attitude, the cow used to moisten the grazing ground with milk."

Prabhupada: So due to good king, in... There is a maxim in Bengali: rajera dose raja nasta, rajya nasta, grhini dose grhastha nasta(?). This is very important instruction. If the king of the state is an impious man, sinful man, that kingdom will never be happy. Nasta. Everything is spoiled. As much as in a family, if the housewife is not good, contaminated, then there is no good life in the family. In Western countries especially, and in this country also, nowadays, there is no peace between husband and wife, and there is no, practically, no family life. In Western countries there is divorce. Here also the divorce law is introduced. And no family is happy. Grhini dose grhastha nasta. So king must be very pious.

So Maharaja Yudhisthira... We have studied a few verses about Maharaja... So the beginning is dharmena. Here it is:

pitra canumato raja
vasudevanumoditah
cakara rajyam dharmena
pitr-paitamaham vibhuh

So he was Dharmaraja Yudhisthira. He was ruling dharmena. Dharmena means just according to the desire of the Supreme Lord. This is dharma. Dharmam. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Dharmena means, religious principle means to act according to the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is religious principle. It is not that you manufacture some dharma: "We are Hindus," "We are Muslims," "We are Christians." These are not dharmas. Nobody cares for God. Nobody carries out the order of God. Nobody knows what is God. Nobody knows what is relationship with God. So where is dharma? The, all bogus. Therefore Bhagavata says: dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra [SB 1.1.2]. This so-called cheating type of religious system is kicked out in Bhagavatam. Real dharma. What is that real dharma? Param satyam dhimahi. Namo bhagavate vasudevaya. This is dharma. Namo bhagavate vasu... Beginning. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Vasudeva, Krsna, Vyasadeva is offering respect. Why? Now satyam param dhimahi. He is the Supreme Truth. What is that Supreme Truth? Janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. That Supreme Truth from whom everything emanates. And this is confirmed in the Bhagavatam, uh, Bhagavad-gita: mattah sarvam pravartate. Aham sarvasya prabhavah. This is confirmed. The Vedanta-sutra gives hint that the Absolute Truth, Brahman, is that which is the original source of all emanations. That is Absolute Truth. Athato brahma jijnasa. What is Brahman? Brahman means the original source of everything. So this is the Vedanta-sutra. And Krsna says:

aham sarvasya prabhavo
mattah sarvam pravartate
iti matva bhajante mam
budha bhava-samanvitah
 [Bg. 10.8]

So when one becomes budha... Budha means well aware of everything. Then he understands Krsna is the source of everything. He's the Supreme. So... And dharma, as it is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, in reference with the Ajamila-moksana, that Yamaraja said: dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. Nobody can manufacture dharma.

So here Yudhisthira Maharaja ruled over this planet, Bharatavarsa, dharmena. Here it is said, cakara rajyam dharmena. Exactly... And here also it is confirmed, that bhismoktam acyutoktam. Nisamya bhismoktam atha acyutoktam. So if such kind of king is there, then everything is all right. Everything. And establishing such pious king... Here it is stated, yudhisthiram prita-mana babhuva, isvara, isvara, nivesayitva nija-rajya isvaro yudhisthiram prita-mana babhuva. And Krsna, why He took part in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra? He wanted that these rascals should be removed, the Duryodhana and company. And Yudhisthira must be there. Therefore He personally supervised the warfare. He took the reigns of Arjuna's chariot to give him direction: "Kill all these demons. Even Bhisma. Even Dronacarya. Kill all of them, because they have taken side of the wrong side. Kill them." That is Krsna's order. "Although Bhisma is respectful, respectable, Dronacarya's respectable, your guru, your grandfather, and such great personality, certainly they are respectable. But because they have taken side of the wrong side, they must be killed. They must be." This is the instruction.

So dharma is so strong. Dharma means to abide by the order of Krsna. That is dharma. If we remain faithful to Krsna, and what Krsna says, if we do that, that is perfect dharma. Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje [SB 1.2.6]. That is first-class religious system. We do not decry any system of religion. We do not say that Hindu religion is better than Christian religion. In what way Hindu religion is better than Christian religion? The followers of so-called Christian religion, they're also set of nonsense, and so are the Hindus. Why we should give preference to one class of rascals and fools than the other class of rascals and fools? We have no such idea, "The Hindus are greater than the Muslims or the Christians," or "The Muslims or the Christians..." We do not con... We want to see, test how much he's devotee of God, how much he has developed his God consciousness. Then we accept that he is, here is dharma. That is the test. Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje [SB 1.2.6].

I told you sometimes, I think, in New York Airport. So seeing us, the sadhus, one young man came to me. So introduced himself, "Sir, I am Christian. I faithfully discharge my religious principles." So I, I told him, "No, no. You do not faithfully discharge your religion." So he was surprised that without talking with him, immediately I charged that "You don't follow your Christian religion." "No, why do you say like that?" "Do you eat meat?" "Yes, sir." "Then you are not a Christian. You are not a Christian. Because in the Christian religion the first commandment is ‘Thou shalt not kill.' So you are encouraging killing. How you are a Christian? You are not a Christian." The actually everyone is very proud of becoming Christian, Hindu, Muslim, but nobody is following. Nobody's following. All bogus.

Because if they would have followed... We don't say follow this religion, that religion. If actually they would have followed, then the symptom would have been they had become devotee of God, lover of God. And as soon as he becomes lover of God, he becomes fully qualified with all good qualifications. Yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana sarvair gunais tatra samasate surah. This is the test. He hasn't got to be trained up how to become honest, how to become clean, how to become this, how to become that. If he becomes a lover of God, Krsna, then all the good qualities automatically reveal. Just like when you are out of diseased condition, all your healthy symptoms are revealed, manifest. It doesn't require to bring them separately, to bring them separately. It is already there. Because every living entity is part and parcel of God, Krsna, he has got all the good qualities of Krsna, very minute quantity. The Gosvamis have analyzed: seventy-eight percent. Not in full, but in minute quantity. It is not joke. Seventy-eight percent of the qualities of Krsna is there in living entity. And Krsna means all-good; they're all good qualities.

So actually when one becomes a devotee, he is qualitatively one with Krsna. Because one cannot become devotee without acquiring the Krsna qualities. You cannot go into the fire without being fire. Without being Brahman, you cannot approach Brahman. Just like if you want to be secretary of a very big man, so you must have necessary qualification. Not that any, any man can become secretary of a big man. So when one becomes devotee, it is the statement of sastra: yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana... Akincana-bhakti. Akincana-bhakti means without any motive. That is akincana-bhakti. "I'll become devotee because I'll get this opportunity to exploit Krsna." That is not devotion. When one shall be ready to be exploited by Krsna, then he's a devotee. Not that with a motive, that "I shall become a devotee and exploit Krsna and Krsna consciousness movement and aggravate my position as sense gratifier." No, that is not devotion.

anyabhilasita-sunyam
jnana-karmady-anavrtam
anukulyena krsnanu-
silanam bhaktir uttama
 [BRS 1.1.11]

That is uttama-bhakti. And that, when one attains that uttama-bhakti, then he's first-class follower of religion. Sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir a... [SB 1.2.6]. It doesn't matter whether you are Christian or Muhammadan or Hindu; we want to see whether you are lover of God, you are a devotee of God, you can sacrifice everything for God. Then you are religious. Otherwise, I..., there is no question of religion.

So Yudhisthira Maharaja was that type of religious man, dharmena. And as soon as you become, then ajitasraya. Your shelter becomes under the lotus feet of Krsna. It is not story. Krsna says, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. It is not story. Krsna says, confirms: "You just become My devotee, and I'll give you all protection." Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati. So many assurances. "Immediately I give you protection." Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo mo... If I am released from all reaction of my sinful activities, then where is my difficulty? Difficulty's there so mo..., so long one is sinful. We suffer the reaction of sinful activities. But if there is no sin, I become purified, then where is suffering? There is no question of suffering.

So the king, being the head, naradeva... Therefore king's another name is naradeva. He's God. King is considered as God, representative of God. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, yes, Sanatana Gosvami. Sanatana Gosvami gave certificate to Nawab Hussain Shah that "You are representative of Krsna." When Nawab Hussain Shah was inquiring about Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that "This person is not ordinary person. We are kings. Sometimes when we give in charity so many men flock around us. But here is a person, wherever He's going, thousands of men are following Him. So He's not ordinary person." After all, he's a king. He has got intelligence. Even from diplomatic point of view, he can understand. So he inquired from his minister, Sanatana Gosvami, "So who is this person?" So Sanatana Gosvami replied that "Whom you accept as (indistinct), the profit is His. It is your fortune that during your reign, He has taken birth in Bengal. You are governor, you are the king of Bengal. And why you are asking me? You are king. You are representative of Krsna. You ask your mind and you'll understand what He is." He gave the certificate immediately. Not that "Oh, you are Muhammadan. What you can know?" No. Muhammadan, Hindu, doesn't matter. If one is king he must be blessed by Krsna. He has been given the opportunity to become... And if the king also remembers that "I am representative of God. God has given me this post to rule over this country, to make them dharmic, to follow, to understand Krsna consciousness, then that is my duty, first duty," then everything is all right.

The rascal, so-called kings, they think that "It is my property. Let me tax the people to the extreme and take the money and enjoy in drinking and enjoying women." Therefore the monarchy's finished. But what is the benefit by finishing this monarchy? The democracy, that is another set of rascals. There was one rascal. Now hundreds of rascals. That is the benefit. Hundreds of rascals, they go and form the democratic government, minister. There is dacoitry. There is rising of the rogues and thieves, and they're enjoying fat salary. So at the present moment we are in a very precarious condition so far the government is concerned. People may say that I am speaking against government, but I am just comparing the government of Maharaja Yudhisthira and the present. If, if... I am not doing anything in my imagination... These are the things. Actually that is the thing. And if the king is right, if the king is dharmic, proper representative of God, then supply, there is no limit of supply. Take.

We have got experience. In sometimes we find in this mango season profuse mango. People cannot end it by eating. And sometimes there is no mango. Why? The supply is in the hand of Krsna through His agent, the material nature, this earth. The earth can produce profusely if people are honest, God conscious. There cannot be any scarcity. Therefore it is said that kamam vavarsa parjanyah [SB 1.10.4]. God gives. Eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. Nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam. So God, Krsna, fulfills all our desires. Now in Bengal we are seeing some rains. In other parts of India, there is no rain. Last time I had been Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, all dry. People are... In Bombay also. People are very much unhappy. There is famine, declaration of famine. So if there is no parjanya, rains, then everything finished. Your so much, so many schemes, ten-years plan, five-years plan and so many plans, they will all dry up. The rascals, they do not know. And how parjanya becomes possible? Yajnad bhavati parjanyo parjanyad anna-sambhavah. You perform yajna. There will be parjanya. The rain falling is not in your hand. You may be great scientist and calculate so much hydrogen and so much oxygen, mixed up, there is water. Now mix up and bring water where there is no rain.

So these so-called scientists, philoso..., all of them are rascals. We should take instruction from sastra. Krsna says: parjanyad anna-sambhavah. Yajnad bhavati parjanyah [Bg. 3.14]. If you perform yajna... Yajna-sistasinah santo mucyante sarva-kilbisaih. We have to perform yajna. Yajna means to satisfy Visnu. That is yajna. Visnu, the Supreme Lord's another name is Yajna-pati. So yajnarthe karmanah anyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg. 3.9]. Therefore everything should be done for yajnarthe, for satisfying Visnu. But na te viduh svartha-gatim hi visnum [SB 7.5.31]. These rascals, they do not know that their real interest is to satisfy Visnu, not his sense. These rascals, they do not know it. They think, "Some way or other, if I can satisfy my senses, then my life is perfect." But you cannot satisfy your senses without satisfying the Lord's sense. If there is no water, no grain, no food, how you can satisfy your senses, rascal? So if you satisfy the senses of the Lord, then your senses will be satisfied automatically. Tasmin tuste jagat tusta. But if you neglect to satisfy the senses of the Lord, and if you want to satisfy your senses, that will not be done.

So Maharaja Yudhisthira was always prepared to satisfy Krsna. He was sorry that so many people were killed in the battle, but he was happy: "Krsna wanted. Krsna is satisfied, that's all right. That's all right. Never mind, so many people have been killed." But personally he was not happy, but Krsna was satisfied. Krsna wanted. Paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam [Bg. 4.8]. So He has finished all the duskrtam. But finishing duskrtam, everyone got svarupa. They were all liberated. Therefore, Krsna is all-good. Either He delivers the devotees and kills the nondevotees, the action, resultant action is the same -- both of them become liberated. Svarupa. That is also stated. Everyone... Because died seeing Krsna in presence in the battlefield. Either this party or that party, it doesn't matter. Everyone died seeing Krsna. so they were all liberated. It is not an ordinary thing, that in the presence of... We have to remember Krsna at the time of death. But Krsna is so kind, in the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, He's personally present. Anyone is dying, he's seeing Krsna. So what is the question of liberation? Everyone is liberated.

So kamam parjanyah, kamam vavarsa parjanyah [SB 1.10.4]. Whatever you get, all the necessities of your life will be available if there is sufficient rain. Because after all, the earth produces... This is the system. There is rainfall, proper rainfall, and the earth produces. Not only food grains. Also jewels also, produced. Those who are astronomers, they know. Under certain constellation of the star, if the rain falls on the head of a snake, there is jewel. If the rain falls on the head of an elephant, there is jewel. Then in the sea also, the pearls, they are produced. It is all due to rains. So kamam vavarsa. Kamam vavarsa. We require so many things. Krsna is prepared also to supply. Nature is there. But even Krsna wants to supply, if you do not become devotee, nature will restrict, "No." That is the proof. When there was less supply... The Maharaja Prthu wanted to kill Prthivi. She explained that "Why you are after me? It is my duty. Now there are only demons. I don't want to give food to the demons. I want to give foodstuff to the devotees." She said. So nature's restriction of supply will be there when people become demons, nondevotees. When people become demons, then nature will stop supply. There will be famine, pestilence. This is the way.

So during the time of Maharaja Yudhisthira, they were not demons. Maharaja Yudhisthira..., Maharaja Pariksit... Maharaja Pariksit, when he wanted to kill Kali, he gave him two chances, that "Either you get out of my kingdom, or I shall kill you." So Kali said, "My lord, I am also your subject. My activities are very heinous. That is my nature. I am meant for that purpose. But I am also your subject. So why you want to drive me away? You give me some place where I shall go if you don't like me." Then he gave him place: yatra papas catur-vidha, striyah sunah pana dyuta yatra papas... "Where there are four principles of sinful activities, namely, illicit sex, intoxication, meat-eating and gambling, you can go there." So Kali could not find a single place where these things are going on. That is the during the reign of Maharaja Pariksit. So he became very much distressed. Therefore, under his plan, he also wanted to drive away Maharaja Pariksit so that he can advance his activities, Kali's activities.

So one brahmana boy cursed him, influenced. The boy was influenced by Kali. His father repented, "Oh, you rascal boy, what you have done?" One side, that a boy, born of a brahmana, only twelve years old, he could curse even a big king like Maharaja Pariksit, and that is invocable. It cannot be nullified. Of course, Maharaja Pariksit could nullify, but he accepted. So even a brahmana boy could curse. But this was wrong. His father repented later on, "What you have done, childish? Such a king." So as soon as Maharaja Pariksit was moved from the scene, the Kali-yuga began in full force. Therefore sometimes it is said that the brahmanas are responsible for introducing Kali-yuga. So that is not actually fact. In due course of time, everything will happen.

So Maharaja Yudhisthira was so pious that during his reign time, kamam vavarsa parjanyah [SB 1.10.4]. There was regular rainfall and everything was produced nicely. Sarva-kama-dugha mahi. Sarva-kama. The, another side is that you don't require industries, trade. You don't require. If you have got land and cow, then everything is complete. This is basic principle of Vedic civilization. Have some land. Have some cows. Dhanyena dhanavan gavayah dhanavan. Not industry. There is no need of industry. Because you want some food, nice food, nice milk, nice fruit, that will be produced by nature. You cannot manufacture all these things in the factory. So therefore the..., at the present moment, the big, big factories, they are the activities of the asuras, ugra-karma. All the people are dragged in the city, industrial area, to engage them in the produce of iron bars, big, big iron bars, Tartiron(?) iron industry, and so many other industry. Capitalists, they have drawn all the innocent people from the village. And they think that "We are getting fat salary." But what is the use of fat salary? One side you get fat salary; another side you have to purchase three rupees a kilo rice. Finish your salary. This is going on. Let them produce their own food. Let him have some land. Let him produce his own food. Let there be cows. Let cows become happy.

Now here is very important word, that payasodhasvatir muda, udhasvatir muda. They were very jolly because they can understand whether they are going to be killed or not. Because they have got, they're animal, they have got sense. I have seen in your country, almost all cows are crying, crying. Because in the beginning, all the calves are taken away and slaughtered in their presence. Perhaps you know. So what is the position of the cow? I have seen when we purchase cows, the calves are already taken away. The cow was crying, regular tears were gliding down. So they can understand that... Who cannot understand? Suppose if you are taken in the concentrated camp? Just like the Germans did. What is the meaning of concentrated...? That he'll be killed after some days. So how you can be happy? If you are already informed, condemned to death, and kept in a concentration camp, will you be happy? Similarly, when these people take these cows to the slaughterhouse, animal stock room, go down, they understand. Very recently, about few years ago, some..., that animal stock store was some way or other broken and all the cows began to... Perhaps you know. It was published in the... And they were shot down. Shot to death. They were fleeing like anything, that "We shall save ourselves."

So if the cows are not happy, if they are always afraid, that "This rascal will kill us at any moment," then how they can be happy? There was no such thing. Therefore it is said: muda. Muda. Happy. And as soon as the cows are happy, you not only get sufficient milk, but the pasturing ground, I mean to say, ground, becomes moist with milk. So much milk supplied. Here it is stated, payasa udhasvatir muda. Yes. There is another description. Formerly, Krsna's cows, when they were passing on, the whole road will be moistened with milk. Milk supply was so sufficient. Simply manufacture butter, milk products, dahi... Distribute. Krsna was distributing amongst the monkeys even: "Take," the monkey, "come on."

So by Krsna's grace if we actually become dharmic, follow Krsna, the milk supply will be so profuse that everyone, even the animals can take the butter and yogurt. That is wanted. That is civilization. Produce sufficient quantity of grains, let the milk, cows, supply sufficient quantity of milk. All economic question solved. There is no use of industry. No use of man's going fifty miles to work. No, there is no need. Simply land and cows. Here is the statement. Kamam parjanyah, vavarsa parjanyah sarva-kama-dugha. Everything you'll get from the land. Even luxury articles. What can be more luxurious article than the jewels? The jewels are also produced. The medicine is produced, the minerals are produced, gold is produced, diamond is produced from the earth. Sarva-kama-dugha. You get everything. Make your civilization very perfect, very luxurious simply by satisfying Krsna. This is Krsna consciousness movement.

Thank you very much. (end)

SRILA PRABHUPADA'S QUOTE OF THE DAY

REFORM IS BETTERTHAN REJECTION
His Divine Grace A. C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

It is better to correct him to the standard point by friendly gestures. We can reject anyone that is very easy  but to reform him requires great skill and tact. If you can reform him by kind words and dealings, that is best. When I was there in Sydney, I observed that ______ is a very, very good boy, and that he has great intelligence and talent. Simply it has become a little misguided due to circumstances. Now you big leaders in Australia, along with the others, should make a concerted attempt to help him over his difficulties. Persuade him that everything is all right and that I am not angry or displeased in any way. Tell him that these things will sometimes happen even with the best devotees. In this way try and persuade him to become engaged with his previous enthusiasm for becoming a great devotee. He is a young boy, so we should not take his actions too seriously. Better to forget the past and try to reform him. His service can once again be very valuable there in Australia. I know that he is a very good boy. Do not drive him away  that will be a discredit to all of you leaders. If there is great difficulty, for the time being he may come and live with me here in Los Angeles. I have no objection. But he has done very nicely in Sydney up to the present time, so if you can utilize his experience and talents there, that is the best plan.

Srila Advaita Acharya - Shantipur, West Bengal

The following is from Shaligram Tirtha Pradarshini

Haribol Prabhus,
There are two temples in Shantipur. One is in the village where ISKCON participates in the Shantipur festival on the disappearance day of Madhavendrapuri. And, the other temple is in the city. These pictures were taken the next morning in Shantipur after the festival.

Shantipur City temple Shantipur village temple

While attending the festival 2005, we inquired about the Saligram Sila that Sri Advaita Acarya worshiped to call Lord Caitanya. The priest, a descendant of Advaita Acharya, said that the saligram was buried under the altar 200 years ago for it's protection. I didn't believe the story so I returned the next morning after mangal arati with His Holiness Amilavilas Swami. He spoke with a different pujari who agreed to bring the saligram silas out for us to see. They are not on the altar for darshan normally. The picture with the two nrsmhadeva silas and three others are from the temple in the village. The pujari said that one of the two nrsmha silas has responsible for the descent of Lord Caitanya. The pujari gave us the tulasi leaves from the saligrams as prasadam. We honored some of them, and I took one home and put it on my altar. I also had brought my Bala Gopal sila and the purjari bath him along with the nrsmha silas.

Advaita bhavan Shantipur village temple Salagram silas

We also visited the Advaita temple in the city. Amazingly, the pujari there looks just like the pujari in the village. Of course, he is a descendant of Sri Advaita also. He showed us another nrsmha sila that Sri Advaita worshiped also. So, one of the three is the one. Or, maybe he is buried under the altar like the first pujari said.

Sri Nrsimhadev from the City temple

The village temple is were Lord Caitanya, Lord Nityananda, and Sri Advaita would meet to discuss how to spread the sankirtan movement. Srila Prabhupada would visit this temple during his grhastra days and later as a sannyasi and pray for the blessing to spread the sankirtan movement in the west. So, this is a very powerful and Krsna Conscious location. I'll tell that story at the end of this article.

An interesting point I like to make is that this Nrsmha Sila actually brought Radha and Krsna together as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This Sila gave birth to the Sankirtan movement that we all are participating in today. Sri Advaita Acharya offered tulasi and ganges water and begged for the appearance of the Lord to the Nrsmha sila. That sila fullfilled the request and cause the descent of Mahaprabhu. That is a very special saligram. I offered my obeisances and beg for empowerment to spread Krsna Consciousness in the west from that Saligram. I prayed at both temples.

I hope some others can shed more light on the history of this saligram. The pujari in the city said that an ISKCON matajai spent a few months there compiling a research paper for her Doctorate in Religion in 2002 or so. He showed us the book but we didn't have time to read much. I only had a short time to visit Mayapur this year (2005) and could not return to discuss more with the pujaris.

Srila Prabhupada and Advaita Bhavan

Sri Advaita Acarya's house is very significant also because Srila Prabhupada visited there often to beg for empowerment to spread Krsna Consciousness in the west. In 1980 at our Caitanya Candrodoya Mandira in Mayapur, the pujari of the temple visited and told the story of Srila Prabupada's visits. This pastime was told at the Sanitpur festival this year and is also in the book "Our Srila Prabhupada a Friend to All". It is compiled by the late Mulaprakrti devi dasi ACBSP. It is a collection of interviews with people outside of ISKCON who new Srila Prabhupada before and after he began preaching in the west. The pastime is as follows.
During the 1940's and 50's, the pujari noticed that one grhastha Bengali devotee used to come to the temple quite regularly. He was dressed in a white khadi dhoti and kurta and he always came alone. He would sit in the back of the mandira without speaking, and he would chant hari-nama on his mala very quietly and deeply. He would come on weekends, usually once every month or two. After chanting there for many hours, he would always thank the pujari and leave. Since his devotion was solitary, the pujari never disturbed him. The pujari would notice that while he chanted, his eyes would be full of tears and his voice would choke up.
Then for a long time, he did not come back. However, the pujari remembers that in August of 1965, he saw a saffron-clothed sannyasi sitting in the back of the mandira. He recognozied him to be the person from before. Again he sat for a long time chanting Hare Krsna. He was weeping unabashedly even more than before while he took the Holy Name. Finally, as evening came, he paid his dandavat pranama for a long time. When he arose, he came up to the pujari and thanked him for his seva at Advaita Bhavan. The pujari asked him, "Who are you? I remember you from so long ago." He replied, "My name is Abhaya Caranaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja. I am an unworthy disciple of His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, Srila Prabhupada, my divine master. I have been coming here for such a long time becasue my gurudeva has given me an impossible mission. His desire was for me to go across the ocean to the Western countries and spread the sublime teaching of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. I have not known how this mission of his will be successful, so I have been coming here to this special house of Advaita Acarya, where he, Nityananda Prabhu, and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would gather to plan the sankirtana movement. It was here that they launched the inundation of love of God that swept India and continues to this day. Thus, I have been praying very earnestly here that they will all give me their mercy and somehow they will empower me and guide me. I want to satisfy my gurudeva's desire, but I am feeling unqualified to do this."

As he was speaking to the pujari, he saw tears falling down on his cheeks again. Then he continued, "Tomorrow I am leaving for Calcutta to go upon a ship across the ocean to America. I do not know what will befall me there, but I am praying most earnestly here for help." Then, he very humbly asked the pujari for his blessings.

It was a few year later that the pujari began to noticed, for the first time, white Vaisnavas coming to Advaita Bhavan. They were wearing dhotis and saris and chanting on tulasi-mala. The pujari never spoke to any of them but then one of them gave him a "Back to Godhead" magazine from America. As the pujari was looking through it, he saw a painting of Srila Prabhupada label as the Founder-Archaya who brought Krsna Consciousness to the West. It was a picture of his old friend, Bhaktivedanta Swami, who had come and prayed there so many times before. He then realized that he had actually accomplished that impossible mission of his gurudeva. He saw that it was indeed he, starting alone and without pretense, who had accomplished this glorious miracle against all odds. As soon as the pujari saw this, he came to the temple in Mayapura to tell this information.

Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Appearance - Gaura Purnima

Some nectar about Lord Nityananda in brief:

Lord Nityananda is the eternal associate of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Rarely is the name Nimai (Caitanya Mahaprabhu) taken without that of Nitai (Lord Nityananda). Mahaprabhu cannot be approached or understood without the mercy of Nityananda Prabhu, who is the cardinal guru of all the universes and serves as an intermediary between Mahaprabhu and His devotees. He is the Lord's active principle in both creation and lila. He is the second body of the Lord, manifesting as Balaram to Sri Krishna, Lakshman to Sri Ram and Nityananda Prabhu to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. All other forms and expansions of the Lord emanate from this second body. Nityananda Prabhu is thus the source of Sankarshan, all the Vishu's, and Ananta Sesa. As Vishnu tattva He and Advaita Acarya are worshipped in the same category as Caitanya Mahaprabhu. In the manifested earthly lila, Nityananda Prabhu is senior to Caitanya Mahaprabhu by more than a decade. He is statuesque, like His Ma!
ster, with the whitish complexion of Lord Balarama. His garments resemble a cluster of blue lotus flowers and His effulgence is said to surpass the grandeur of a rising moon at sunset. He has a deep melodious voice, constant singing the glories of Sri Krishna and carries a red stick with benedictions for the devotees, but feared by the demoniac. He has the carefree mood of a wild avadhuta, so absorbed is He in the love of Godhead, and no one knows what He will do next.

Nityananda Prabhu was born in Ekacakra, a small village in present West Bengal, around the year 1474. His birthsite is commemorated by a temple named Garbhasva and is visited by throngs of pilgrims today. His father, Hadai Ojha and mother Padmavati, were pious Brahmans originally from Mithila. Nityananda Prabhu was born on the auspicious thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Maga. As a child, Nitai (as Nityananda Prabhu was called), loved to enact the pastimes of Sri Krishna or Lord Rama. He did this so authoritatively and with such rapture, that the entire village would be immersed in the love of Godhead.

Nitai's favorite part was that of Lakshman, and He enacted it with so many apparently authentic scenes not described in the Ramayana, that people would wonder if He was making it up or actually relishing His own pastimes. The village of Ekacakra was completely absorbed in the love of little Nitai, where He spend the first 12 years of his earthly life. In the 13th year, a travelling sannyasi, said to be the famous Lakshmipati Tirtha, enchanted by Nitai"s devotion and service, requested Nitai from his parents, as a travelling companion. His parents, bound by Vedic culture, could not refuse the request of a guest and reluctantly parted with Nitai. However, devastated by the separation with Nitai, that Hadai Pandit soon gave up his life.

Nitai traveled with Lakshmipati Tirtha for about 20 years, during which He visited all the holy places in the country, reminiscent of the manner that Balarama traveled while the battle at Kurukshetra raged on. Nitai is said to be later on initiated by Lakshmipati Tirtha. He also associated with another of Lakshmipati Tirtha's famous disciple, Madhavendra Puri, who although his godbrother, was revered by Nitai was as a spiritual master. Madhavendra Puri is famous for establishing the sweet truth of Madhurya-rasa which later become an integral part of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Among the other disciples of Madhavendra Puri is Advaita Acarya, and Isavara Puri (the spiritual master of Caitanya Mahaprabhu).

Nityananda Prabhu met Caitanya Mahaprabhu in 1506, when He was 32 years old and the Lord 20 years. It is said that when Nityananda Prabhu reached the land of Nadia, He hid in the house of Nandanacarya, to heighten the ecstasy of meeting through separation. Caitanya Mahaprabhu aware of the arrival of His eternal associate dispatched Haridas Thakur and Srivas Pandit to search out Nitai, but they failed. Finally unable to bear the separation any longer, Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself went directly to Nityananda Prabhu and the ecstasy of the meeting was so transcendental that every one witnessing it were awed by the sublime experience. A temple called Sri Gaura-Nityananda commemorates this meeting place in Nadia.

Nityananda Prabhu in His role as the original spiritual master, was instrumental in spreading the yuga dharma of sankritana all over the Gaudia desh (Bengal, Orrisa). His mercy knew no bounds, and people fortunate to come in contact with Him were inundated with the love of Godhead. It was by His mercy that Raghunatha dasa, one of the six Goswamis started the famous Danda Mahotsava festival of Panihatti, a tradition that continues to this day, and was thus able to serve Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He extended His mercy to even fallen souls like Jagai and Madhai, delivering them from the sinful lives and protecting them from the wrath of even Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Indeed His mercy knew no bounds, and fortunate were the people who tasted the nectar of His instructions.

When Nityananda Prabhu returned to Bengal at the request of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, His decided to abandon His avadhuta status and become a grahastha (householder). He married Jahnava devi and Vasudha, the two daughters of Suryadasa Sarakhel, who the brother of Gauridasa Pandit (an intimate associate of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and the spiritual master of the famous Shyamananda Pandit). Nityananda Prabhu had a son (Virchandara) and a daughter (Gangadevi) from Vasudha. Soon after Vasudha passed away and Jahanva devi looked after the children. She later initiated Virchandra, and also became an instructing spiritual master to the likes of Shyamananda Pandit, Shrivasa Pandit and Narottama dasa Thakur. Jahnava devi is revered as a Vaishnavi and she established the pre-eminent positon of women in the Vaishanava tradition.

Lord Nityananda wound up His earthly pastimes, by merging into the deity of Krishna, known as Bankim Ray, not far from Ekacakra. Vaishanava acaryas emphatically state that people who try to understand Caitanya Mahaprabhu without getting the mercy of Nityananda Prabhu will never succeed. and one must pray very sincerely to Lord Nityananda Prabhu as the adi-guru (original spiritual master) to be delivered to the Lotus feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The presence of Nityananada Prabhu is always felt in the presence of one's own guru, for the guru is considered to be the living manifestation of Nityananda Prabhu's love and mercy, and his sakti (power) is what gives the disciple the ability to perform devotional service and experience spiritual bliss.

Lord Nityänanda Prabhu’s
Ävirbhäva Appearance Day Lecture
--
Bhubaneswar, February 2, 1977
770202NA.BHU

Prabhupäda: So today, the appearance day of Nityänanda Prabhu... Nityänanda Prabhu is Baladeva, Baladeva-tattva.

vrajendra-nandana yei, çacé-suta haila sei,
balaräma haila nitäi
“Who was formerly the son of Nanda Mahäräja, He has appeared as the son of Çacédevi.” Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s mother’s name was Çacédevi. So Kåñëa... Kåñëa is Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, and Balaräma is Nityänanda Prabhu. Now...
vrajendra-nandana yei, çacé-suta haila sei,
balaräma haila nitäi
So Balaräma... In the Vedic literature it is said, näyam ätmä bala-hinena labhyaù; na bahunä çrutena. So bala means strength. Sometimes some rascal philosophers, they take it that bala means bodily strength. They propagate this philosophy that “Unless you are bodily stout and strong, you cannot achieve spiritual salvation. You must be very strong and stout and eat meat and fight, and then you’ll get next spiritual birth” No. This bala, this strength, is different. This is spiritual strength.
The difficulty of the present situation is that actually we are moving on account of spiritual strength, but they have no information of the spiritual strength. They are thinking of material strength. That is expressed here, that
ahaìkäre matta hoiyä, nitäi-pada päsariyä,
asatyere satya kori mäni
This is due to ahaìkära. Ahaìkära-vimüòhätmä kartäham iti manyate. Those who are vimüòha, especially rascal... Müòha, rascals, and vi means viçeña, viçeñanam, particularly. Ahankara- vimudhätmä. The same thing which is spoken in the Bhagavad- gétä, Narottama däsa Öhäkura says the same thing in a plain Bengali language. Ahaìkäre matta haiyä, nitäi-pada... By the spell of mäyä—ahaìkära-vimüòhätmä kartäham iti manyate— they are thinking that “We are independent. We can do whatever we like.” This is called ahaìkära-vimüòhätmä. Under false pretext, false prestige, everyone is thinking that “We are independent. We can find out the solution of the problems of life by material adjustment,” so on, so on. So that is our material disease. Ahaìkära-vimüòhätmä. Bewildered, they do not understand that the real strength is spiritual strength. We see daily, see daily that a very strong man, very powerful man, very good brain, very good scientist... So where is the strength? The strength is ätmä. As soon as the ätmä, or the soul, goes out of this body, so intelligent, so strong, and so many things, that is nothing. That is the difference between dead man and the living man. A living man is very powerful, very good position, everything. As soon as he lies down, he is lying down on the floor, and if you kick him on his face, he’ll not protest. So where is that strength? The strength is gone. That is spiritual strength. On the spiritual strength, the body moves. Suppose you have got a very good car, Mercedes car or Rolls Royce car. But when there is no petrol, how the car will move? It is not possible. There is spirit, petrol spirit. Similarly, real strength is spiritual strength. That spiritual strength is Balaräma. Bala means strength. Therefore we have to take shelter of the lotus feet of Balaräma, guru-tattva.
Balaräma means guru-tattva. Balaräma represents guru. Yasya prasädäd bhagavat-prasädaù. If we want to understand Caitanya Mahäprabhu, if we want to understand Kåñëa, then we must take shelter of Balaräma. Näyam ätmä bala-hinena labhyaù. This bala- hinena labhyaù, this Vedic injunction, means “Without the mercy of Balaräma you cannot understand, you cannot realize your spiritual identification. So that Balaräma comes as Nityänanda Prabhu. Balaräma hailä nitäi. Therefore we must take shelter of Balaräma. That is... This song has been sung by Narottama däsa Öhäkura. Nitäi-pada-kamala, koöi-candra-suçétala. If we take shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu, then we get peace. Koöi-candra-suçétala. Just like in daytime, especially in the summer season, we become very much exasperated. But at night, in the evening, as soon as there is moonshine, we become very much satisfied. All day’s labor and fatigue is immediately moved. So nitäi-pada-kamala, the shade of Nityänanda Prabhu’s lotus feet, is koöi-candra-suçétala, as pleasing as one crore of moonshine. One moonshine gives us so much pleasure. So if we want actually peace of mind, if we actually want to be free from this material fatiguement, then we must take the shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu. Nityänanda Prabhu is the strength, spiritual strength. And without spiritual strength you cannot approach Kåñëa. Näyam ätmä pravaca... Simply by talking nonsense... Näyam ätmä pravacanena labhyaù. If you are a good speaker, that does not mean you’ll understand, yourself. Na medhayä: “Neither by good brain.” Because you have got very good brain you’ll understand Kåñëa—no. Näyam ätmä pravacanena labhyo na medhayä na bahunä çrutena. If you think that you are a very good scholar, university degree-holder, then you’ll understand—no. This is not possible.
So we must have spiritual strength. That source of spiritual strength is Balaräma, Kåñëa’s next manifestation, prakäça- vigraha. Kåñëa is manifesting Himself through Balaräma. So we have to take shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu.
nitäi-pada-kamala, koöi-candra-suçétala,
je chäyäy jagata juräy
The whole world is suffering, but if you want peace, then you take the shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu.
heno nitäi bine bhäi, rädhä-kåñëa päite näi
dhådha kori’ dharo nitäir päy
Our real aim of life—how to go back home back to Godhead and associate with Rädhä Kåñëa. In another song the same author says,
manuñya-janama päiyä, rädhä-kåñëa nä bhajiyä,
jäniyä çuniyä biña khäinu
Unless you come to Rädhä-Kåñëa, you cannot get real pleasure. If you want to dance and get pleasure, don’t dance independently. Dance with Kåñëa. Then you’ll be happy. The dancing is there, but dancing without association of Kåñëa... Just like here, in our temple, we are also eating, but we are eating the remnants of foodstuff left by Kåñëa. That is real pleasure. It is not that we are stopping eating. We are not stopping eating. We are not dry philosophers. Kåñëa baro doyämoy, koribäre jihwä jay, swa-prasäd-anna dilo bhäi. All over the world we are eating Kåñëa prasädam, and we have got good experience. At least ten thousand men and women, they are taking Kåñëa prasädam, but we have no anxiety. We have no anxiety. A family consists of a few members. They are full of anxiety how to maintain the family. And we are maintaining a family of ten thousand men. We have no anxiety. Just see practically. We have no anxiety. We require thousands and thousands of rupees for maintaining Europe, America, a costly affair. But because we are under the shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu, Balaräma, we have no anxiety. That means material life means anxiety. You cannot avoid anxiety if you lead a material life. Then you will be anxious.
That is Prahläda Mahäräja’s instruction. He was asked by his father, “My dear son, what you have learned, the best thing from your teachers?” So he replied, “My dear father...” He never said, “My dear father”; He said, “My dear best of the asuras.” Asura- varya. Tat sädhu manye ’sura-varya dehinäm. Tat sädhu manye ’sura-varya dehinäà sadä samudvigna-dhiyäm asad-grahät. The whole human society is suffering, at least suffering from one disease— anxiety. Ask anybody. Take one small ant and take the big elephant; take the President of United States or take one street beggar. Ask him, “Whether you are free from anxiety?” Nobody will say, “No.” “I am full of anxiety.” That’s a fact. So why they are anxiety, in, full of anxiety? That Prahläda Mahäräja had replied, sadä samudvigna-dhiyäm asad-grahät. Because we have taken asad- vastu, that will not exist...
Everything, whatever you have got... Our, this body will not exist. And this is the main platform of our existence. In the material world, so long the body is there, you exist. So Prahläda Mahäräja said that “Real solution of problems of life is to get out of this material condition. That is best thing in my opinion.” Sada samadvigna-dhiyäm asad... That is Vedic injunction also. Asato mä sad gamaya: “Don’t live in this asat, in this material condition.” Sad gamaya: “Go to real existence.” That real existence means spiritual life. Na hanyate hanyamäne çarére. So if we actually want life, blissful life, then we must get out of this material existence. That is Prahläda Mahäräja’s instruction. Samudvigna-dhiyäm. And if you remain in the material existence, you must suffer some anxiety. There is no excuse.
So Prahläda Mahäräja advises that hitvätma-ghätam gåham andha-küpaà vanam gato yad dharim äçrayeta. If you... Real problem is anxiety. And this anxiety will continue so long you are material existent. Therefore the real life is to get out of this material... Hitvätma-ghätam. Ätma-ghäöam. Ätma-ghätam means killing the soul. This material civilization is killing the soul. That... They have no information of the soul. They do not know how to become peaceful, how to become blissful. They are trying to be peaceful, bahir-artha-mäninaù, by external material energy. They are thinking by constructing big, big buildings, just like in Bhubaneswar they are doing, and having good, very big, big roads and motorcars, that is advancement of civilization. No. That is not advancement of civili... That is increasing their anxiety. There is no solution of the anxiety. There is... Formerly that... I was speaking. There was no university. The university was in the cottage—Vyäsadeva. Vyäsadeva was writing Çrémad-Bhägavatam and all the Puräëas in a cottage. The university was there. Who can produce such literature as Vyäsadeva has given? From any angle of vision, from literary point of view, from philosophical point of view—everything, so perfect, every literature, Mahäbhärata, Puräëas, and Vedänta. Veda-vyäsa, he has given. So there was no need of university. It required clear brain. That was to be done by the brahminical qualifications, çamo damo titikñä ärjava, jïänaà-vijïänam ästikyam brahma-karma svabhäva... Where is that education? This education, technical education, how you can very nicely hammer, this will not solve the problem. So if we want real solution of the problems, then our duty is first of all to take the shelter of nitäi-pada-kamala. Then we’ll be happy, and we’ll get moonshine, and our all fatigueness will be subsided.
Sambandha nähi jär, båthä janma gelo tär. So if you have no connection with Nityänanda Prabhu... Nityänanda means always. Nitya means always, änanda means pleasure. This is another meaning you can draw. So therefore, if you have no connection with Nityänanda Prabhu... Se tär: “He’s simply wasting time.” Båthä means useless. Uselessly, he’s wasting time. Se paçu boro duräcär. And Narottama däsa Öhäkura has used very strong word. “Anyone who has no connection with Nityänanda Prabhu, he’s a paçu.” Sei paçu. He’s a paçu, means animal. So animal, how one animal can get happiness? That is not possible. The dog, from the childhood he’s searching after food, searching after food. And cannot get food. Unless a dog has got a master, he’s street dog and he’s always unhappy. So better to become a dog of Nityänanda Prabhu. Then we shall be happy. Instead of becoming dog of so many other people... Everyone is dog. Everyone is searching after to serve a master. But none of them are satisfied because that is false master. You take real master, Nityänanda Prabhu. You’ll be happy. Se paçu boro duräcär. He does not know where is happiness. Where I shall become a dog? That...
Our Bhaktivinoda Öhäkura, he has sung therefore,
vaisnava öhäkur, tomära kukkur,
boliya janaha more
“My dear Vaiñëava Öhäkura, kindly accept me as your dog, as your dog. I am dog already, but I am mäyä’s dog. I’m not Vaiñëava’s dog. So kindly accept me.” If you become a Vaiñëava’s dog... Chäòiyä vaiñëava sevä, nistär päiche kebä. If you do not become a dog of Vaiñëava and Nityänanda Prabhu... Nityänanda is guru. So if you do not become a dog of Nityänanda Prabhu, Vaiñëava, or guru, there is no question of happiness. Se sambandha nähi yär, båthä janma gelo... se paçu boro duräcär. Nitäi nä bolilo mukhe, majilä saàsära-sukhe. He who has no connection with Nityänanda Prabhu, and he does not say, “Jaya Nitäi! Jaya Gaura!” And majilo saàsära-sukhe, he thinks that this society, family, and... “Society, friendship and love, divinely bestowed upon man.” These materialist persons, they say like that. That is called majilo saàsära sukhe. In saàsära there cannot be any sukha, but he’s attracted by that. Majilo saàsära sukhe. Vidyä-kule ki koribe tär. What we’ll do with university education or born in big family or... This will not help. This is not possible. Vidyä-kule ki karibe tär. Why they’re accepting this false? Ahaìkäre matta hoiyä, nitäi-pada pasariya, asatyere satya kori mäni. On account of being misled by false prestige and false egotism, asatyere satya kori mäni, we are accepting this body which is asat, which will not exist. That we have taken as reality. Ahaìkare matta hoiya, nitäi pada pasariya. But if we take shelter of Nityänanda Prabhu, then you get the enlightenment. Asatyere satya kori mäni. Nitäiyer koruëä habe, braje rädhä-kåñëa pabe, dharo nitäi-caraëa du’khäni.
Therefore Narottama däsa Öhäkura advises that... Today is Nityänanda Prabhu’s ävirbhäva appearance day. Let us at least remember today nitäi-pada-kamala. That is wanted. Nitäi caraëa satya, tähära sevaka nitya. The reality is nitäi-caraëa, and anyone who is servant of Nitäi...So nitäiyer caraëa satya, tähära sevaka nitya. One who has become the dog of Nityänanda Prabhu, he gets his eternal life. We are eternal, but under misconception of material identification, we are under the subjugation of mäyä. Bhütvä bhütvä praléyate. Tathä dehäntara... It is very botheration, but they do not know. I am going from one body to another transmigration. And that is not guaranteed, what body. They have no science, no knowledge about understanding tathä dehäntara, the very first instruction of Bhagavad-gétä. They are so rascals, and they are proud of their education, their universities. This is going on.
Nitäi caraëa satya, tähära sevaka..., nitäi-pada sadä koro äçä. Therefore we should always expect to be under the shelter of nitäi-pada-kamala. Narottama boro duùkhé. Narottama däsa Öhäkura, he’s äcärya. He is presenting himself... That is äcärya. Means he is not duùkhé, but he’s presenting himself as duùkhé. That is äcärya. Äcäryas, they are never duùkhé. But taking the common man’s position, he says, narottama boro duùkhé. Or, in other words, Narottama... Narottama means the best of the human being. So here in this material world one may be the best of the human being, very exalted position, but everyone is duùké, unhappy. Narottama boro duùké, nitäi more koro sukhé: “Only Nityänanda can make me happy. Otherwise not possible.” Rakho raìga-caraëera päça. So today is Nityänanda Prabhu’s appearance day. We shall always pray Nityänanda Prabhu, “Kindly keep me under your shelter so that... I am very duùké; I am very unhappy. Under the shelter of Your lotus feet I shall be happy.” And that is real happiness. Thank you very much.

räkho räìgä-caraëera päça

Nitäi-pada-kamala, koöi-candra-suçétala, je chäyäy jagata juräy.
This is a song by Narottama däsa Öhäkura, a great äcärya of the Gauòéya-vaiñëava-sampradäya. He has written many songs about the Vaiñëava philosophy, and they are approved as completely corresponding with Vedic instructions. So here Narottama däsa Öhäkura is singing that “The whole world is suffering under the blazing fire of material existence. Therefore, if one takes the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Nityänanda...,” whose birthday is today, 31st, January, 1969. So we should relish this instruction of Narottama däsa Öhäkura that in order to get relief from the pangs of blazing fire of this material existence, one should take shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Nityänanda because it is as cooling as the moon rays combined together of millions of moons. That means one will immediately find peaceful atmosphere. Just like a man works whole day and if he comes under the moonshine he feels relief.
Similarly, any materialistic man who comes under the shelter of Lord Nityänanda will immediately feel that relief. Then he says,
nitäi-pada-kamala, koöi-candra-suçétala,
je chäyäy jagata juräy,
heno nitäi bine bhai, rädhä-kåñëa päite näi,
dharo nitäi-caraëa du’khani
He says that “If you are anxious to go back to home, back to Godhead, and become associate with Rädhä and Kåñëa, then the best policy is to take shelter of Nityänanda.” Then he says, se sambandha nähi jä’r, båthä janma gelo tä’r: “One who has not been able to contact Nityänanda, then one should think of himself that he has simply spoiled his valuable life.” Båthä janma gelo, båthä means for nothing, and janma means life. Gelo tä’r,  spoiled. Because he has not made connection with Nityänanda. The Nityänanda, very name, suggests... Nitya means eternal. Änanda means pleasure. Material pleasure is not eternal. That is the distinction. Therefore those who are intelligent, they are not interested with this flickering pleasure of material world. Every one of us, as living entity, we are searching after pleasure. But the pleasure which we are seeking, that is flickering, temporary. That is not pleasure. Real pleasure is nityänanda, eternal pleasure. So anyone who has no contact with Nityänanda, it is to be understood that his life is spoiled.
se sambandha nähi jä’r, båthä janma gelo tä’r,
sei paçu boro duräcär
Narottama däsa Öhäkura uses here very harsh word. He says that such human being is an animal, an uncontrollable animal. As there are some animals that cannot be tamed, so anyone who has not contacted Nityänanda, he should be considered as an untamed animal. Sei paçu boro duräcär. Why? Because nitäi nä bolilo mukhe: “He never uttered the holy name of Nityänanda.” And majilo saàsära-sukhe, “and become merged into this material happiness.” Vidyä-kule ki koribe tär. “That nonsense does not know that what will his education and family and tradition and nationality will help him?” These things cannot help him. These are all temporary things. Simply, if we want eternal pleasure, we must contact Nityänanda. Vidyä-kule ki koribe tär. Vidyä means education, and kula means family, nationality. So we may have a very nice family connection or we may have very nice national prestige, but after ending this body, these things will not help me. I’ll carry my work with me, and according to that work, I shall have to accept by force another type of body. It may be something other than human body. So these things cannot protect us or give us the real pleasure. So Narottama däsa Öhäkura advises that vidyä-kule ki koribe tär.  Then he says, ahaìkäre matta hoiyä. “Being maddened after false prestige and identification...” False identification with the body and prestige of bodily relationship, it is called ahaìkäre matta hoiyä. One is mad after this false prestige. Ahaìkäre matta hoiyä, nitäi-pada päsariyä. Due to this false prestige we are thinking, “Oh, what is Nityänanda? What can He do for me? I don’t care.” So these are the signs of false prestige. Ahaìkäre matta hoiyä, nitäi-pada päsa..., asatyere satya kori mäni. The result is that I am accepting something which is false. For example, I am accepting this body. This body, I am not this body. Therefore, with false identification I am becoming entangled more and more. So one who is puffed up with this false prestige, ahaìkäre matta hoiyä, nitäi-pada pä..., asatyere satya kori mäni, he accepts something wrong as right. Then he says, nitäiyer koruëä habe, braje rädhä-kåñëa päbe. If you are actually serious about going back to home, back to Godhead, then please seek after the mercy of Nityänanda. Ahaìkäre...
nitäiyer koruëä habe, braja rädhä-kåñëa päbe,
dharo nitäi-caraëa du’khäni
“Please catch up the lotus feet of Nityänanda.” Then he says, nitäiyer caraëa satya. One may think that as we catch hold of so many shelter, but in this material world later on they prove false, similarly, suppose we catch hold of the lotus feet of Nityänanda; it may also prove false. But Narottama däsa Öhäkura assures that nitäiyer caraëa satya: “It is not false. Because Nityänanda is eternal, His lotus feet is also eternal.” Täìhära sevaka nitya. And anyone who takes to the service of Nityänanda, they also become eternal. Without being eternal, nobody can serve the eternal. That is the Vedic injunction. Without becoming Brahman, one cannot approach the Supreme Brahman. Just like without being fire, nobody can enter into the fire. Without being water, nobody can enter into the water. Similarly, without being fully spiritualized, nobody can enter into the spiritual kingdom. So nitäiyer caraëa satya.  If you catch nitäiyer, the lotus feet of Nityänanda, then you become immediately spiritualized. Just like if you touch electricity, immediately you become electrified. That is natural. Similarly, Nityänanda is eternal happiness, if you touch Nityänanda some way or other, then you become also eternally happy. Täìhära sevaka nitya. Therefore one who has in contact with Nityänanda, they have become eternal.

nitäiyer caraëa satya, täìhära sevaka nitya,
dåòha kori’ dharo nitäir päy

So just catch Him very tightly. Narottama boro duùkhé, nitäi more koro sukhé. At the last Narottama däsa Öhäkura, the composer of this song, he is appealing to Nityänanda, “My dear Lord, I am very unhappy. So You please make me happy. And You kindly keep me in corner of Your lotus feet.” That is the sum and substance of this song. (end)

Lord Nityananda's Childhood Pastimes from Chaitanya Bhagavat

Lord Nityananda's Childhood
by Satyaraja dasa
Posted February 14, 2003 http://www.chakra.org/announcements/FestFeb14_03_01.html

Curiously there is no authoritative biography of Nityananda Prabhu; and while Rupa, Jiva, and Raghunatha do not even mention him once in their collective writings, Sanatana Gosvami refers to him only briefly in the invocation of his Vaisnava-tosani. Nonetheless, the world is fortunate that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's biographers have devoted large sections of their work to Nityananda's life, which can be pieced together from this massive literature, and also from later medieval Vaisnava texts, such as Bhakti-ratna- kara and Prema-vilasa. Nityananda Prabhu was born in the village of Ekcakra, also called Ekacakra, in the country of Rahr (Radhadesa), some eight miles east of where today stands the Mallarpura station of the E.I. Railway (within the modern Birbhum District of West Bengal). His birthsite is commemorated by a small temple named Garbhavasa and is visited by throngs of pilgrims to this day.
Although no authorized account of His birth is extant, it is said that He was born in or near the year 1474 and that His father's name was Hadai Ojha. Hadai was a well known pandita, having descended from a good brahmana family whose origins were in Mithila; and his wife's name was Padmavati. Their only son, Nityananda, was born on the auspicious thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Magh. This auspicious day was made even more auspicious by Nityananda Prabhu's birth.
As a child, Nitai, as He was called, had a close circle of friends, and together they used to imitate the pastimes of Visnu and His associates. Once, they dressed themselves as demigods and petitioned the Lord to alleviate the burdened Earth of Kali-yuga. Nityananda Prabhu and a playmate who was dressed as the ailing Earth, along with the other children, took their game to the Ganges, where they addressed Lord Visnu. At that time, one of the children hid behind a rock and spoke in a grave voice, "I will soon be born in Mathura to lighten the oppression of the Earth." The boys enjoyed themselves, as children do, while becoming completely absorbed in Krsna lila.
On another occasion, Nitai and His friends gathered in an imitation "village" to celebrate the marriage of Vasudeva and Devaki, the parents of Krsna. The following day, they made their playhouse into the prison of Kamsa and enacted the entire story of Krsna's birth. Once, while acting out this episode, Nitai transformed the area into a cowherd settlement and took "Krsna" there, deceiving Kamsa by substituting Yogamaya for Krsna within the prison.
Performing these intricately-woven stories on a daily basis, the children became quite close and came to love Nitai as their natural leader and friend. He was the most imaginative among them, and they all laughed and shared joyful exchanges when He would dress them like demons.
When they staged the Putana story, for example, they would engage in uproarious laughter when one of their friends pretended to suck the demoness's breasts like baby Krsna. Sometimes Nitai would construct demons out of toys, naming them Bakasura, Aghasura, Vatsasura, and so on and would go through the motions of battling with them and finally killing them.
His friends were so entertained by His play-acting that they would come back day after day just to see Him do it again and again.
Once in a while, His friends would take the roles of the elephant Kuvalayapida or the wrestlers Canura and Mustika. Nitai would fight with them, knock them down, and drag them off by the hair. By the end of the day, their stomachs would ache from laughter, and they would tell their parents about the great fun enjoyed with Nitai in play-acting.
Sometimes Nitai would bring His friends to the local milkman and have them watch Him steal butter and yogurt, as Krsna did in His Vraja lila. The milkman, of course, did not complain. In fact, he was an accomplice, setting aside excess dairy for Nitai and His friends, expecting them to show up.
All the adults of Ekacakra adored Nitai. They were fascinated by this unique little boy, and they loved Him as their own. Seeing His total absorption in Krsna and the avataras of Visnu, they suspected that He might be some sort of Incarnation Himself.
He was relentless, day after day enacting a different pastime, and did it so skillfully that His neighbors wondered, "How is it that He is so talented? How does He know the stories so well? No one has explained all these details to Him."
One day He imitated Krsna's pastime of lifting Govardhana Hill, with all aspects of the story acted out perfectly. On another, He constructed a replica of Vrndavana, performing many parts of Krsna's Vraja-lila with marked realism, and on still another, He pretended to steal the clothes of the gopis and visit the wives of the brahmanas engaged in sacrifice.
On one occasion, one of the boys dressed as Akrura and took Krsna and Balarama away from Vrndavana on the order of Kamsa. Nitai cried in grief, feeling the separation of the gopis. Tears of love flowed from His eyes.
His acting was so authentic that it made all who watched question whether He was merely acting or in some way experiencing the part He played. This was true whether He was playing Krsna, Balarama, or even Vamana, or other Incarnations of the Lord.
"Nitai, where have you learned all this?" one of the neighborhood ladies asked. Nityananda enjoyed her question. "They are My own divine pastimes," He said, "and I am allowing you to see them." The townspeople laughed, shaking their heads. They did not know what to make of Him.

He says that “If you are anxious to go back to home, back to Godhead, and become associate with Rädhä and Kåñëa, then the best policy is to take shelter of Nityänanda.” Then he says, se sambandha nähi jä’r, båthä janma gelo tä’r: “One who has not been able to contact Nityänanda, then one should think of himself that he has simply spoiled his valuable life.” Båthä janma gelo, båthä means for nothing, and janma means life.                          se sambandha nähi jä’r, båthä janma gelo tä’r,

(end)

 Purport (by Srila Prabhupada)--

This is a song by LocanadAsa ThAkura, who was almost contemporary with Lord Caitanya. he has written many books on the life and precepts of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. LocanadAsa says, "Lord NityAnanda is full of good qualities (NitAI-guNamaNi means the jewel all good qualities). He says this repeatedly.
AniyA premera banyA bhAsAla abanI. On account of His spiritual qualities, He has inundated the whole world with the flood of love of Godhead. It is by His kindness that people can experience what is love of God.
Premera banyA laiyA AilA gauDa-deze. When Lord Caitanya MahAprabhu left home and took sannyAsa, He made His headquarters at jagannAtha PurI. Lord NityAnanda also accompanied Him up to JagannAtha purI. After a few days Lord Caitanya requested Him, "If both of us remain here, then who will preach in Bengal?" Bengal is known as GauDa-deza. Under the order of Lord Caitanya, Lord NityAnanda brought with Him the flood of love of Godhead, and He distributed it to the whole of Bengal.
Dubila bhakata-gaNa dIna hIna bhAse. In that flood all the devotees drowned, but the non-devotees could not drown. They were floating. As far as Lord NityAnanda is concerned, he does not make any discrimination between devotees and nondevotees.
